• Trouble setting up PATH for Java on Debian

  I am trying to get Oracle Java 7 update 3 working correctly on Debian 6. I have downloaded and set up the files in /usr/java/jre1.7.0_03. I have also set the following two lines at the end of /etc/bash.bashrc: export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.7.0_03 export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin Logging in as other users and root is fine, Java can be found: chris@mc:~$ java -version java version "1.7.0_03" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_03-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.1-b02, mixed mode) However there are two cases where Java cannot be found as detailed below. Note that both of these worked fine when I have previously installed OpenJDK Java 6 via aptitude, but I need Oracle Java 7 for various reasons. Most importantly, I cannot run commands as another user via su, despite the PATH showing that Java should be present. How can it be in the PATH but not be found? Update 05/04/2012: explained by Daniel, to do with it being a non-interactive shell so files such as /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc are not executed. Doing a full swap to that user and running Java works: root@mc:~# su chris chris@mc:/root$ java -version java version "1.7.0_03" ... I run a script on start up which exhibits similar but slightly different problems. The script is located in /etc/init.d/start-mystuff.sh and calls a jar: #!/bin/bash # /etc/init.d/start-mystuff.sh java -jar /opt/Mars.jar I can confirm that the script runs on start up and the exit code is 127, which indicates command not found. Inserting a line to print/save the PATH shows that it is: /sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin This second problem isn't as important because I can just point directly to the Java executable in the script, but I am still curious! I have tried setting the full PATH and JAVA_HOME explicitly in /etc/environment which didn't help. I have also tried setting them in /etc/profile which doesn't seem to help either. I have tried logging in and out again after setting PATH in the various locations (duh!). Anyway, long post for what will probably have a simple one line solution :( Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I have spent far too long trying to fix it by myself. Motivation The first problem may seem obscure but in my system I have users that are not allowed SSH access yet I still want to run processes as them. I have a ton of scripts operating in this way and don't want to have to change them all.

  OK, Im trying to highlight keywords in a richtextbox, the problem is I've got the code to highlight only the visible text on textChanged event,so I tryed putting the code in the richtextbox VScroll, so when I scrolled up it would highlight the text that wasn't visible before, but every time I start to scroll I get this error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll" Does any one know why? Or maybe a way I could highlight the words while scrolling? • Shut down windows service based on load

  Hello, I was wondering if there are any free / open source solutions that will start and stop a windows service based on load? I have some pubsub subscriber services that do background work which is not critical. Ideally i would like tot be able to automate things so that these services could start if memory/cpu/disk i/o was under a certain threshold and stop gracefully if that threshold was met. Initially I get a sting (from a file stored on the server) between #DATA# and #END# using: function getStringBetweenStrings($string,$start,$end){ $startsAt=strpos($string,$start)+strlen($start); $endsAt=strpos($string,$end, $startsAt); return substr($string,$startsAt,$endsAt-$startsAt); } I do some processing and based on the details of the string, query for some records. If there are records I need to be able to append them at the end of the string and then re-insert the string between #DATA# and #END# within the file on the server. How can I best achieve this? Is it possible to insert a record at a time in the file before #END# or is it best to manipulate the string on the server and just re-insert over the existing string in the file on the server?

  I am doing my first steps with TDD. The problem is (as probably with everyone starting with TDD), I never know very well what kind of unit tests to do when I start working in my projects. Let's assume I want to write a Stack class with the following methods(I choose it as it's an easy example): Stack<T> - Push(element : T) - Pop() : T - Seek() : T - Count : int - IsEmpty : boolean How would you approch this? I never understood if the idea is to test a few corner cases for each method of the Stack class or start by doing a few "use cases" with the class, like adding 10 elements and removing them. What is the idea? To make code that uses the Stack as close as possible to what I'll use in my real code? Or just make simple "add one element" unit tests where I test if IsEmpty and Count were changed by adding that element? How am I supposed to start with this?

• mysqld_multi stop doesn't seem to work

  mysqld_multi stop 1 followed by (repeatedly, a few moments later) mysqld_multi report 1 returns: Reporting MySQL servers MySQL server from group: mysqld1 is running The instances work fine and when I reboot, I have to start the instances to get them to come back up (a separate issue I need to resolve), but the stop command doesn't seem to do anything. It truly doesn't stop the instance because in the instance log file I see this: 120619 11:12:39 mysqld_safe A mysqld process already exists after trying to run start after.

• Starting x11vnc remotely when X server is already running

  I have a ubuntu linux machine that I have already logged into and X server is running (it is pass the login manager like gdm). I can access this machine through ssh. My goal is to start x11vnc on this machine and attach it to the X server that is already running. When I ssh into the machine and start x11vnc, it says: X11 was unable to open the X DISPLAY ":0", it cannot continue. How can I start x11vnc on the remote machine if I don't have physical access to it and Xserver has already started. The rub: I can't get Tomcat 5.5 to start as a windows service on 64-bit windows using a 32-bit JDK. the details: I've been running Tomcat 5.5 on Windows Server 2008 (x64) as a service for some time using a 64-bit JDK. I'm being forced to install a 32-bit JDK on this 64-bit machine so I can make use of the Java JAI libraries (no 64-bit JAI version). I have to run Tomcat using this 32-bit JDK. I can run Tomcat using the 32-bit JDK if I start it using /bin/startup.bat Problem is, it will not start as a windows service. I'm using the Tomcat bundled procrun executables. Has anyone had success starting Tomcat as a service using a 32-bit JDK on a 64-bit machine? Thanks for your expertise.

  There are apparently at least three different techniques for changing screen brightness in the Android OS. Two of them no longer work post-cupcake and the third accepted technique evidently has a bug. I would like to increase screen brightness at the start of a one-view activity then turn the brightness back to the user setting at the end of the activity. No buttons, no second view or second activity. Just a maxed brightness at start and a return to original brightness setting at the end of the activity. The examples of the current technique using WindowManager.LayoutParams that I have located range from 2 lines of code WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes(); lp.screenBrightness = 100 / 100.0f; getWindow().setAttributes(lp); to several pages of source code and numerous activities. Is there a simple example of maxing the screen brightness at start that someone can provide a link to? Thank you for reading my question.

  I'm working in JavaScript drawing on a canvas, and have four coordinates to draw a parallelogram, called A, B, C, and D starting from the top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom right, respectively. An example of some coordinates might be: A: (3, 3) B: (4, 3) C: (1, 0) D: (2, 0) I can draw the parallelogram just fine, but I would like to fill it in with a gradient. I want the gradient to fill in from left to right, but matching the angle of the shape. The library I use (CAKE) requires a start and stop coordinate for the gradient. My stop and start would be somewhere half way between A and C, and end somewhere half way between B and D. Of course, it is not simply EXACTLY half way because the angles at A, B, C, and D are not right angles. So given this information (the coordinates), how to I find the point on the line A - C to start, and the point on the line B - D to stop? Remember, I'm doing this in JavaScript, so I have some good Math tools at my disposal for calculation.

  I want to comment several lines in my .vimrc, the usual way I do it is :x,ys/^/"/ and x stands for the start line number and y stands for the line number of the last line. I read some post which said in visual mode this task can be done by the following step: 1 Select your lines with VISUAL BLOCK 2 press I to insert before all highlighted lines. 3 type your comment charact , in this case should be " 4 then ESC I fllowed the above steps and met met problems in step 2 . the thing is when I select the lines in Visual mode and press I , vim ( I use version7.2) go back to insert mode and the cursor back to the start of the first line. so if you continue to do the step 3 and step 4, you end up in just inserting " at the start the first line , far from what I want to achieve. so could you point out what's wrong with the recipe ? thanks in advance

Ideally, I'm hoping for something that could be used like: nosleep myscript.sh Background Sometimes I start up long-running jobs like a manual backup or large file transfers and I've found that Windows often goes to sleep before these finish. I'd like to be able to start up the command and prevent sleep mode while the command is running, but have it automatically work again once the command has completed.
