• Is there a way to make the speaker silent while the headphone-jack keeps working? 12.04LTS

  The PC I am working on is in a loud environment. If I need sound, I use the headphone. On my own account this is easy: I mute the speaker in the sound-setting. I am not the only user, others use the Guest-session. And that's what this question about: Is it possible to turn off the speaker by default on a guest-session AND leave the headphone-output working? If yes, how can I fix it? I tried to loosen the speaker (hardware) connection but it is soldered to the mainboard. • How do I select DWM or fluxbox to start on login?

  I am trying to setup DWM in Ubuntu 10.10. The package is successfully built - and now I am trying to get it up and running. I created the dwm.desktop file with the proper text and the path to the dwm exec is correct. On login screen, I can see dwm as a alternate session : but if I select it, still gnome starts. I even tried another window manager (fluxbox) - same problem. I can see and select it in the login screen, but gnome starts up. Trying gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager dwm --type string also does nothing. Killing the windows manager just restarts it - even if I chvt first. Also, don't see the xinit daemon running. Any ideas ? This setup was trivial in Debian, and older versions of Ubuntu. What changed ? I am guessing gnome integration is to blame - but am clueless as of now.

• Feedback from SQLBits 8

  This years SQLBits occurred in Brighton. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to attend the full conference, I did a presentation at Saturday. Getting to Brighton was easy. Drove to Copenhagen airport at 0415, flew 0605 and arrived at Gatwick 0735. Then I took the direct train to Brighton and showed up at 0830, just one hour before presenting. This was the easy part. Getting home was much worse. Presentation ended at 1030 and I had to rush to the train station to get back to London, change to tube for Heathrow. Made it at the gate just 15 seconds before closing. That included a half mile run in the airport… Anyway, yesterday I got the feedback for my presentation. It does look good, especially since English is not my first language. This is the first graph Seems to be just halfway between conference average and best session. I can live with that. Second graph shows more detail about attendees voting. It also look acceptable. A wider spread for the 9’s, but it is an inevitable effect from how attendees percept the session. I did get a lot of 8’s and the lower grades in an descending order. The two people voting 4 and 5 didn’t say why they voted this so I don’t know how to remedy this. Third graph is about each category of votes.   Again, I find this acceptable. The Session abstract and Speaker’s knowledge seems to follow attendees expectations compared to conference average. I seem to have met the attendees expectations (and some more) for the other four categories, also compared to conference average. Since this did encourage me, I believe I will present some more at future meetings. I do have a new presentation about something all developers are doing every day but they may not know it. I will also cover this new topic in the next Deep Dives II book. Stay tuned! //Peter

• Intro to Sessions in ASP.Net

  Sessions are used to pass the value from one page to another with no effort from the user. With a session, if the user inputs values on the original page and you need to access them on another page, you can retrieve the values stored in the session without making the user submit those values again. Sessions are important to any user-related authentication (if you're using the https protocol), user-related validation and customization of visitor experiences in your website. • Immutable design with an ORM: How are sessions managed?

  If I were to make a site with a mutable language like C# and use NHibernate, I would normally approach sessions with the idea of making them as create only when needed and dispose at request end. This has helped with keeping a session for multiple transactions by a user but keep it from staying open too long where the state might be corrupted. In an immutable system, like F#, I would think I shouldn't do this because it supposes that a single session could be updated constantly by any number of inserts/updates/deletes/ect... I'm not against the "using" solution since I would think that connecting pooling will help cut down on the cost of connecting every time, but I don't know if all database systems do connection pooling. It just seems like there should be a better way that doesn't compromise the immutability goal. Should I just do a simple "using" block per transaction or is there a better pattern for this?

• How to boot into Live USB/CD with UEFI on latest Vaio S series?

  I am unable to boot from USB/CD into a live Ubuntu session to proceed with install. Esc or F12 didn't work and I can't seem to be able to enter the bios settings. Sony Vaio S w/ Ivy Bridge (just one month old, Insyde H2O EFI?) I have read about: creating /EFI/boot on a fat16 stick http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12071096&postcount=2 installing rEFInd using the Alternate install CD (supposedly in order not to mess with W7 UEFI boot partition) It's pretty clear what I have to do afterwards http://askubuntu.com/a/157062 but I am at loss on how to simply boot into a Live Session then install. • Oracle Open World 2012

  I'll be at Oracle Open World 2012 next week in San Francisco. I'm presenting in a session entitled "What’s New with Oracle VM Server for x86 and SPARC Architectures: A Technical Deep Dive", along with Adam Hawley. We'll be talking about Oracle's overall virtualization strategy, what's new with Oracle server virtualization on both x86 and SPARC, as well as an update on Oracle's virtualization management capabilities. The session runs from 11:45am to 12:45pm on Wednesday 10/3, in Moscone South - room 252. You can also find me at the Oracle VM Server for SPARC booth on Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon to showcase some pretty cool upcoming features for SPARC virtualization. • 12.04 LTS won't install from CD

  I've been trying to install 12.04 LTS onto a Dell with a PIII from CD. Booting from the CD the install gets through the "Who are you" process, begins copying files. The progress bar gets as far as the last period in "Copying files...". The box clears, and an error box comes up "The installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigae the problem or try installing again." When I try to install from this desktop session, the install gets to the same point, the copying files box closes, and then just stops. The pointer is busy, the cd drive spins up occaisonally with no data transfer, no hard drive activity. When I boot from the CD and access the disk boot menu, the disk checks good, memory checks good ( I upgraded the original memory to 512 mb). I also updated the bios to the newest from Dell. This is an older L866r, but should meet the requirements.

• Bandwidth heavy site... use co-location?

  I'm working on a web site that is likely to be very bandwidth-heavy. A major feature of the site when in active use can pull up to 1Mbps for a single session. Luckily, once users get over the new toy factor, the use of this feature will probably be 1-5% or less (probably much less) of session time. However, new users are likely to play with this feature a good bit, especially at launch. I'm very concerned about bandwidth use. This is more or less a niche market, so I won't ever be needing to scale to crazy levels like YouTube. However, it is entirely possible for it to be a couple terabytes/month. Is co-location my best option? What cheap bandwidth services (colocation/hosted/cloud/whatever) are out there?

• Can't login to my XFCE environment from lxdm

  I installed lxdm as my display manager because I heard its very lightweight. Now after installing it when I select my Desktop as Xfce session I am not able to login. Basically what happens is it waits for sometime and than reload the same login page. On the other hand if I select lxde as my Desktop I am able to login. So, what am I doing wrong here. The other problem I am facing with lxdm is it doesn't show my default user account. I have to select more and enter both my username and password to login into any session.

• How to use different input language for different active (application) windows?

  I'm working under 12.04 and suppose I have a Firefox windows active (or in foreground) with English as input language and I need to type a document in other language using some text editor. With the text editor in foreground (or active) and the input language set to a non-English one, when I bring Firefox in foreground (or making it active) the input language remains set to the non-English and the language flag does not switch to English (as it would be expected, since I do not alter the language during the whole Firefox session). Because of this, I have to make extra moves and change the input language manually every time I switch from the text editor to Firefox and back to text editor. This was not happening with 10.04, and each application windows had the corresponding input language set to its default or previous session every time I was bringing it to the foreground! How will I make 12.04 to behave the same way?
