  • Exception Handling And Other Contentious Political Topics

    - by Justin Jones
    So about three years ago, around the time of my last blog post, I promised a friend I would write this post. Keeping promises is a good thing, and this is my first step towards easing back into regular blogging. I fully expect him to return from Pennsylvania to buy me a beer over this. However, it’s been an… ahem… eventful three years or so, and blogging, unfortunately, got pushed to the back burner on my priority list, along with a few other career minded activities. Now that the personal drama of the past three years is more or less resolved, it’s time to put a few things back on the front burner. What I consider to be proper exception handling practices is relatively well known these days. There are plenty of blog posts out there already on this topic which more or less echo my opinions on this topic. I’ll try to include a few links at the bottom of the post. Several years ago I had an argument with a co-worker who posited that exceptions should be caught at every level and logged. This might seem like sanity on the surface, but the resulting error log looked something like this: Error: System.SomeException Followed by small stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace. Error: System.SomeException Followed by slightly bigger stack trace.   These were all the same exception. The problem with this approach is that the error log, if you run any kind of analytics on in, becomes skewed depending on how far up the stack trace your exception was thrown. To mitigate this problem, we came up with the concept of the “PreLoggedException”. Basically, we would log the exception at the very top level and subsequently throw the exception back up the stack encapsulated in this pre-logged type, which our logging system knew to ignore. Now the error log looked like this: Error: System.SomeException Followed by small stack trace. Much cleaner, right? Well, there’s still a problem. When your exception happens in production and you go about trying to figure out what happened, you’ve lost more or less all context for where and how this exception was thrown, because all you really know is what method it was thrown in, but really nothing about who was calling the method or why. What gives you this clue is the entire stack trace, which we’re losing here. I believe that was further mitigated by having the logging system pull a system stack trace and add it to the log entry, but what you’re actually getting is the stack for how you got to the logging code. You’re still losing context about the actual error. Not to mention you’re executing a whole slew of catch blocks which are sloooooooowwwww……… In other words, we started with a bad idea and kept band-aiding it until it didn’t suck quite so bad. When I argued for not catching exceptions at every level but rather catching them following a certain set of rules, my co-worker warned me “do yourself a favor, never express that view in any future interviews.” I suppose this is my ultimate dismissal of that advice, but I’m not too worried. My approach for exception handling follows three basic rules: Only catch an exception if 1. You can do something about it. 2. You can add useful information to it. 3. You’re at an application boundary. Here’s what that means: 1. Only catch an exception if you can do something about it. We’ll start with a trivial example of a login system that uses a file. Please, never actually do this in production code, it’s just concocted example. So if our code goes to open a file and the file isn’t there, we get a FileNotFound exception. If the calling code doesn’t know what to do with this, it should bubble up. However, if we know how to create the file from scratch we can create the file and continue on our merry way. When you run into situations like this though, What should really run through your head is “How can I avoid handling an exception at all?” In this case, it’s a trivial matter to simply check for the existence of the file before trying to open it. If we detect that the file isn’t there, we can accomplish the same thing without having to handle in in a catch block. 2. Only catch an exception if you can do something about it. Continuing with the poorly thought out file based login system we contrived in part 1, if the code calls a Login(…) method and the FileNotFound exception is thrown higher up the stack, the code that calls Login must account for a FileNotFound exception. This is kind of counterintuitive because the calling code should not need to know the internals of the Login method, and the data file is an implementation detail. What makes more sense, assuming that we didn’t implement any of the good advice from step 1, is for Login to catch the FileNotFound exception and wrap it in a new exception. For argument’s sake we’ll say LoginSystemFailureException. (Sorry, couldn’t think of anything better at the moment.) This gives us two stack traces, preserving the original stack trace in the inner exception, and also is much more informative to the calling code. 3. Only catch an exception if you’re at an application boundary. At some point we have to catch all the exceptions, even the ones we don’t know what to do with. WinForms, ASP.Net, and most other UI technologies have some kind of built in mechanism for catching unhandled exceptions without fatally terminating the application. It’s still a good idea to somehow gracefully exit the application in this case if possible though, because you can no longer be sure what state your application is in, but nothing annoys a user more than an application just exploding. These unhandled exceptions need to be logged, and this is a good place to catch them. Ideally you never want this option to be exercised, but code as though it will be. When you log these exceptions, give them a “Fatal” status (e.g. Log4Net) and make sure these bugs get handled in your next release. That’s it in a nutshell. If you do it right each exception will only get logged once and with the largest stack trace possible which will make those 2am emergency severity 1 debugging sessions much shorter and less frustrating. Here’s a few people who also have interesting things to say on this topic:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ericlippert/archive/2008/09/10/vexing-exceptions.aspx http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/9538/Exception-Handling-Best-Practices-in-NET I know there’s more but I can’t find them at the moment.

  • Webcast Q&A: Qualcomm Provides a Seamless Experience for Customers with Oracle WebCenter

    - by kellsey.ruppel
    Last Thursday we had the second webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "Qualcomm Provides a Seamless Experience for Customers with Oracle WebCenter, where customer Michael Chander from Qualcomm and Vince Casarez & Gourav Goyal from Oracle Partner Keste shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering Qualcomm’s externally facing website and providing a seamless experience for their customers. In case you missed it, here's a recap of the Q&A.   Mike Chandler, Qualcomm Q: Did you run into any issues when integrating all of the different applications together?A: Definitely, our main challenges were in the area of user provisioning and security propagation, all the standard stuff you might expect when hooking up SSO for authentication and authorization. In addition, we spent several iterations getting the UI’s in sync. While everyone was given the same digital material to build too, each team interpreted and implemented it their own way. Initially as a user navigated, if you were looking for it, you could slight variations in color or font or width , stuff like that. So we had to pull all the developers responsible for the UI together and get pixel level agreement on a lot of things so we could ensure seamless transitions across applications. Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: Wow, there have been several. An SSO enabled environment was huge a win for our users. The portal application that this replaced had not really been invested in by the business. With this project, we had full business participation and backing, and it really showed in some key areas like the shopping experience. For example, while ordering in the previous site, the items did not have any pictures or really usable descriptions. A tremendous amount of work was done to try and make the site more intuitive and user friendly. Site performance has also drastically improved thanks to new hardware, improved database design, and of course the fact that ADF has made great strides in runtime performance. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: Within a large company, I’m sure there is always going to be competition for large projects, as there was here. Once we got through the technical analysis and settled on the technology choices, it was actually no resistance to implementing the solution. This project was fully driven by the business with the aim of long term growth. I can confidently say that the fact that this project was given the utmost importance by both the business and IT really help put down any resistance that you would typically see while implementing a new solution. Q: Given the performance, what do you estimate to be the top end capacity of the system? A:I think our top end capacity is really only limited by our hardware. I’m comfortable saying we could grow 10x on our current hardware, both in terms of transactions and users. We can easily spin up new JVM instances if needed. We already use less JVM’s than we had planned. In addition, ADF is doing a very good job with his connection pooling and application module pooling, so we see a very good ratio of users connected to the systems vs db connections, without impacting performace. Q: What's the overview or summary of feedback from the users interacting with the site?A: Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from both the business and our customers. They’re very happy with the new SSO environment , the new LAF, and the performance of the site. Of course, it’s not all roses. No matter what, there are always going to be people that don’t like the layout or the color scheme, etc. By and large though, customers are happy and the business is happy. Q: Can you describe the impressions about the site before and after the project within Qualcomm?A: Before the project, the site worked and people were using it, but most people were not happy with it. It was slow and tended to be a bit tempermental, for example a user would perform a transaction and the system would throw and unexpected error. The user could back up and retry the steps and things would work fine, so why didn’t work the first time?. From a UI perspective, we’d hear comments like it looked like it was built by a high school student.  Vince Casarez & Gourav Goyal, Keste Q: Did you run into any obstacles when implementing the solution?A: It's interesting some people call them "obstacles" on this project we just called them "dependencies".  There were both technical and business related dependencies that we had to work out. Mike points out the SSO dependencies and the coordination and synchronization between the teams to have a seamless login experience and a seamless end user experience.  There was also a set of dependencies on the User Acceptance testing to make sure that everyone understood the use cases for how the system would be used.  With a branching into a new market and trying to match a simple user experience as many consumer sites have today, there was always a tendency for the team members to provide their suggestions on how things could be simpler.  But with all the work up front on the user design and getting the business driving this set of experiences, this minimized the downstream suggestions that tend to distract a team.  In this case, all the work up front allowed us to enumerate the "dependencies" and keep the distractions to a minimum. Q: Was there a lot of custom work that needed to be done for this particular solution?A: The focus for this particular solution was really on the custom processes. The interesting thing is that with the data flows and the integration with applications, there are some pre-built integrations, but realistically for the process flow, we had to build those. The framework and tooling we used made things easier so we didn’t have to implement core functionality, like transitioning from screen to screen or from flow to flow. The design feature of Task Flows really helped speed the development and keep the component infrastructure in line with the dynamic processes.  Task flows and other elements like Skins are core to the infrastructure or technology stack of Oracle. This then allowed the team to center the project focus around the business flows and use cases to meet the core requirements and keep the project on time. Q: What do you think were the keys to success for rolling out WebCenter?A:  The 5 main keys to success were: 1) Sponsorship from the whole organization around this project from senior executive agreement, business owners driving functionality, and IT development alignment; 2) Upfront design planning and use case definition to clearly define the project scope and requirements; 3) Focussed development and project management aligned with the top level goals and drivers; 4) User acceptance and usability testing along the way to identify potential issues and direct resolution of the issues;  and 5) Constant prioritization of the issues for development to fix by the business.  It also helps to have great team chemistry and really smart people working on the project. If you missed the webcast, be sure to catch the replay to see a live demonstration of WebCenter in action!  Qualcomm Provides a Seamless Experience for Customers with Oracle WebCenter from Oracle WebCenter

  • LibGDX onTouch() method Array and flip method

    - by johnny-b
    How can I add this on my application. i want to use the onTouch() method from the implementation of the InputProcessor to kill the enemies on screen. how do i do that? do i have to do anything to the enemy class? also i am trying to add a Array of enemies and it keeps throwing exceptions or the bullet now is facing LEFT <--- again after I used the flip method in the bullet class. All the code is below so please anyone feel free to have a look thanks. please help Thank you M // This is the bullet class. public class Bullet extends Sprite { public static final float BULLET_HOMING = 6000; Thank you for any help given.

  • FOUR questions to ask if you are implementing DATABASE-AS-A-SERVICE

    - by Sudip Datta
    During my ongoing tenure at Oracle, I have met all types of DBAs. Happy DBAs, unhappy DBAs, proud DBAs, risk-loving DBAs, cautious DBAs. These days, as Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) becomes more mainstream, I find some complacent DBAs who are basking in their achievement of having implemented DBaaS. Some others, however, are not that happy. They grudgingly complain that they did not have much of a say in the implementation, they simply had to follow what their cloud architects (mostly infrastructure admins) offered them. In most cases it would be a database wrapped inside a VM that would be labeled as “Database as a Service”. In other cases, it would be existing brute-force automation simply exposed in a portal. As much as I think that there is more to DBaaS than those approaches and often get tempted to propose Enterprise Manager 12c, I try to be objective. Neither do I want to dampen the spirit of the happy ones, nor do I want to stoke the pain of the unhappy ones. As I mentioned in my previous post, I don’t deny vanilla automation could be useful. I like virtualization too for what it has helped us accomplish in terms of resource management, but we need to scrutinize its merit on a case-by-case basis and apply it meaningfully. For DBAs who either claim to have implemented DBaaS or are planning to do so, I simply want to provide four key questions to ponder about: 1. Does it make life easier for your end users? Database-as-a-Service can have several types of end users. Junior DBAs, QA Engineers, Developers- each having their own skillset. The objective of DBaaS is to make their life simple, so that they can focus on their core responsibilities without having to worry about additional stuff. For example, if you are a Developer using Oracle Application Express (APEX), you want to deal with schema, objects and PL/SQL code and not with datafiles or listener configuration. If you are a QA Engineer needing database copies for functional testing, you do not want to deal with underlying operating system patching and compliance issues. The question to ask, therefore, is, whether DBaaS makes life easier for those users. It is often convenient to give them VM shells to deal with a la Amazon EC2 IaaS, but is that what they really want? Is it a productive use of a developer's time if he needs to apply RPM errata to his Linux operating system. Asking him to keep the underlying operating system current is like making a guest responsible for a restaurant's decor. 2. Does it make life easier for your administrators? Cloud, in general, is supposed to free administrators from attending to mundane tasks like provisioning services for every single end user request. It is supposed to enable a readily consumable platform and enforce standardization in the process. For example, if a Service Catalog exposes DBaaS of specific database versions and configurations, it, by its very nature, enforces certain discipline and standardization within the IT environment. What if, instead of specific database configurations, cloud allowed each end user to create databases of their liking resulting in hundreds of version and patch levels and thousands of individual databases. Therefore the right question to ask is whether the unwanted consequence of DBaaS is OS and database sprawl. And if so, who is responsible for tracking them, backing them up, administering them? Studies have shown that these administrative overheads increase exponentially with new targets, and it could result in a management nightmare. That leads us to our next question. 3. Does it satisfy your Security Officers and Compliance Auditors? Compliance Auditors need to know who did what and when. They also want the cloud platform to be secure, so that end users have little freedom in tampering with it. Dealing with VM sprawl is not the easiest of challenges, let alone dealing with them as they keep getting reconfigured and moved around. This leads to the proverbial needle in the haystack problem, and all it needs is one needle to cause a serious compliance issue in the enterprise. Bottomline is, flexibility and agility should not come at the expense of compliance and it is very important to get the balance right. Can we have security and isolation without creating compliance challenges? Instead of a ‘one size fits all approach’ i.e. OS level isolation, can we think smartly about database isolation or schema based isolation? This is where the appropriate resource modeling needs to be applied. The usual systems management vendors out there with heterogeneous common-denominator approach have compromised on these semantics. If you follow Enterprise Manager’s DBaaS solution, you will see that we have considered different models, not precluding virtualization, for different customer use cases. The judgment to use virtual assemblies versus databases on physical RAC versus Schema-as-a-Service in a single database, should be governed by the need of the applications and not by putting compliance considerations in the backburner. 4. Does it satisfy your CIO? Finally, does it satisfy your higher ups? As the sponsor of cloud initiative, the CIO is expected to lead an IT transformation project, not merely a run-of-the-mill IT operations. Simply virtualizing server resources and delivering them through self-service is a good start, but hardly transformational. CIOs may appreciate the instant benefit from server consolidation, but studies have revealed that the ROI from consolidation would flatten out at 20-25%. The question would be: what next? As we go higher up in the stack, the need to virtualize, segregate and optimize shifts to those layers that are more palpable to the business users. As Sushil Kumar noted in his blog post, " the most important thing to note here is the enterprise private cloud is not just an IT project, rather it is a business initiative to create an IT setup that is more aligned with the needs of today's dynamic and highly competitive business environment." Business users could not care less about infrastructure consolidation or virtualization - they care about business agility and service level assurance. Last but not the least, lot of CIOs get miffed if we ask them to throw away their existing hardware investments for implementing DBaaS. In Oracle, we always emphasize on freedom of choosing a platform; hence Enterprise Manager’s DBaaS solution is platform neutral. It can work on any Operating System (that the agent is certified on) Oracle’s hardware as well as 3rd party hardware. As a parting note, I urge you to remember these 4 questions. Remember that your satisfaction as an implementer lies in the satisfaction of others.

  • Complex event system for DungeonKeeper like game

    - by paul424
    I am working on opensource GPL3 game. http://opendungeons.sourceforge.net/ , new coders would be welcome. Now there's design question regarding Event System: We want to improve the game logic, that is program a new event system. I will just repost what's settled up already on http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=3033. From the discussion came the idea of the Publisher / Subscriber pattern + "domains": My current idea is to use the subscirbers / publishers model. Its similar to Observable pattern, but instead one subscribes to Events types, not Object's Events. For each Event would like to have both static and dynamic type. Static that is its's type would be resolved by belonging to the proper inherited class from Event. That is from Event we would have EventTile, EventCreature, EvenMapLoader, EventGameMap etc. From that there are of course subtypes like EventCreature would be EventKobold, EventKnight, EventTentacle etc. The listeners would collect the event from publishers, and send them subcribers , each of them would be a global singleton. The Listeners type hierachy would exactly mirror the type hierarchy of Events. In each constructor of Event type, the created instance would notify the proper listeners. That is when calling EventKnight the proper ctor would notify the Listeners : EventListener, CreatureLisener and KnightListener. The default action for an listner would be to notify all subscribers, but there would be some exceptions , like EventAttack would notify AttackListener which would dispatch event by the dynamic part ( that is the Creature pointer or hash). Any comments ? #include <vector> class Subscriber; class SubscriberAttack; class Event{ private: int foo; int bar; protected: // static std::vector<Publisher*> publishersList; static std::vector<Subscriber*> subscribersList; static std::vector<Event*> eventQueue; public: Event(){ eventQueue.push_back(this); } static int subscribe(Subscriber* ss); static int unsubscribe(Subscriber* ss); //static int reg_publisher(Publisher* pp); //static int unreg_publisher(Publisher* pp); }; // class Publisher{ // }; class Subscriber{ public: int (*newEvent) (Event* ee); Subscriber( ){ Event::subscribe(this); } Subscriber( int (*fp) (Event* ee) ):newEvent(fp){ Subscriber(); } ~Subscriber(){ Event::unsubscribe(this); } }; class EventAttack: Event{ private: int foo; int bar; protected: // static std::vector<Publisher*> publishersList; static std::vector<SubscriberAttack*> subscribersList; static std::vector<EventAttack*> eventQueue; public: EventAttack(){ eventQueue.push_back(this); } static int subscribe(SubscriberAttack* ss); static int unsubscribe(SubscriberAttack* ss); //static int reg_publisher(Publisher* pp); //static int unreg_publisher(Publisher* pp); }; class AttackSubscriber :Subscriber{ public: int (*newEvent) (EventAttack* ee); AttackSubscriber( ){ EventAttack::subscribe(this); } AttackSubscriber( int (*fp) (EventAttack* ee) ):newEventAttack(fp){ AttackSubscriber(); } ~AttackSubscriber(){ EventAttack::unsubscribe(this); } }; From that point, others wanted the Subject-Observer pattern, that is one would subscribe to all event types produced by particular object. That way it came out to add the domain system : Huh, to meet the ability to listen to particular game's object events, I though of introducing entity domains . Domains are trees, which nodes are labeled by unique names for each level. ( like the www addresses ). Each Entity wanting to participate in our event system ( that is be able to publish / produce events ) should at least now its domain name. That would end up in Player1/Room/Treasury/#24 or Player1/Creature/Kobold/#3 producing events. The subscriber picks some part of a tree. For example by specifiing subtree with the root in one of the nodes like Player1/Room/* ,would subscribe us to all Players1's room's event, and Player1/Creature/Kobold/#3 would subscribe to Players' third kobold's event. Does such event system make sense to you ? I have many implementation details to ask as well, but first let's start some general discussion. Note1: Notice that in the case of a fight between two creatues fight , the creature being attacked would have to throw an event, becuase it is HE/SHE/IT who have its domain address. So that would be BeingAttackedEvent() etc. I will edit that post if some other reflections on this would come out. Note2: the existing class hierarchy might be used to get the domains addresses being build in constructor . In a ctor you would just add + ."className" to domain address. If you are in a class'es hierarchy leaf constructor one might use nextID , hash or any other charactteristic, just to make the addresses distinguishable . Note3:subscribing to all entity's Events would require knowledge of all possible events produced by this entity . This could be done in one function call, but information on E produced would have to be handled for every Entity. SmartNote4 : Finding proper subscribers in a tree would be easy. One would start in particular Leaf for example Player1/Creature/Kobold/#3 and go up one parent a time , notifiying each Subscriber in a Node ie. : Player1/Creature/Kobold/* , Player1/Creature/* , Player1/* etc, , up to a root that is /* .<<<< Note5: The Event system was needed to have some way of incorporating Angelscript code into application. So the Event dispatcher was to be a gate to A-script functions. But it came out to this one.

  • WCF on Windows Phone 7 (Silverlight 4)

    - by Igor Zevaka
    Has anyone been able to communicate using WCF on Windows Phone Series 7 emulator? I've been trying for the past two days and it's just happening for me. I can get a normal Silverlight control to work in both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4, but not the phone version. Here are two versions that I've tried: Version 1 - Using Async Pattern BasicHttpBinding basicHttpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding(); EndpointAddress endpointAddress = new EndpointAddress("http://localhost/wcf/Authentication.svc"); Wcf.IAuthentication auth1 = new ChannelFactory<Wcf.IAuthentication>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel(endpointAddress); AsyncCallback callback = (result) => { Action<string> write = (str) => { this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate { //Display something }); }; try { Wcf.IAuthentication auth = result.AsyncState as Wcf.IAuthentication; Wcf.AuthenticationResponse response = auth.EndLogin(result); write(response.Success.ToString()); } catch (Exception ex) { write(ex.Message); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(ex.Message); } }; auth1.BeginLogin("user0", "test0", callback, auth1); This version breaks on this line: Wcf.IAuthentication auth1 = new ChannelFactory<Wcf.IAuthentication>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel(endpointAddress); Throwing System.NotSupportedException. The exception is not very descriptive and the callstack is equally not very helpful: at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.BuildMessage(Exception x) at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.LogException(Exception x) at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.ThrowHelperError(Exception e) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory`1.CreateChannel(EndpointAddress address) at WindowsPhoneApplication2.MainPage.DoLogin() .... Version 2 - Blocking WCF call Here is the version that doesn't use the async pattern. [System.ServiceModel.ServiceContract] public interface IAuthentication { [System.ServiceModel.OperationContract] AuthenticationResponse Login(string user, string password); } public class WcfClientBase<TChannel> : System.ServiceModel.ClientBase<TChannel> where TChannel : class { public WcfClientBase(string name, bool streaming) : base(GetBinding(streaming), GetEndpoint(name)) { ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = WcfConfig.UserName; ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = WcfConfig.Password; } public WcfClientBase(string name) : this(name, false) {} private static System.ServiceModel.Channels.Binding GetBinding(bool streaming) { System.ServiceModel.BasicHttpBinding binding = new System.ServiceModel.BasicHttpBinding(); binding.MaxReceivedMessageSize = 1073741824; if(streaming) { //binding.TransferMode = System.ServiceModel.TransferMode.Streamed; } /*if(XXXURLXXX.StartsWith("https")) { binding.Security.Mode = BasicHttpSecurityMode.Transport; binding.Security.Transport.ClientCredentialType = HttpClientCredentialType.None; }*/ return binding; } private static System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress GetEndpoint(string name) { return new System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress(WcfConfig.Endpoint + name + ".svc"); } protected override TChannel CreateChannel() { throw new System.NotImplementedException(); } } auth.Login("test0", "password0"); This version crashes in System.ServiceModel.ClientBase<TChannel> constructor. The call stack is a bit different: at System.Reflection.MethodInfo.get_ReturnParameter() at System.ServiceModel.Description.ServiceReflector.HasNoDisposableParameters(MethodInfo methodInfo) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateOperationDescription(ContractDescription contractDescription, MethodInfo methodInfo, MessageDirection direction, ContractReflectionInfo reflectionInfo, ContractDescription declaringContract) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateOperationDescriptions(ContractDescription contractDescription, ContractReflectionInfo reflectionInfo, Type contractToGetMethodsFrom, ContractDescription declaringContract, MessageDirection direction) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateContractDescription(ServiceContractAttribute contractAttr, Type contractType, Type serviceType, ContractReflectionInfo& reflectionInfo, Object serviceImplementation) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.LoadContractDescriptionHelper(Type contractType, Type serviceType, Object serviceImplementation) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.LoadContractDescription(Type contractType) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory1.CreateDescription() at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory.InitializeEndpoint(Binding binding, EndpointAddress address) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory1..ctor(Binding binding, EndpointAddress remoteAddress) at System.ServiceModel.ClientBase1..ctor(Binding binding, EndpointAddress remoteAddress) at Wcf.WcfClientBase1..ctor(String name, Boolean streaming) at Wcf.WcfClientBase`1..ctor(String name) at Wcf.AuthenticationClient..ctor() at WindowsPhoneApplication2.MainPage.DoLogin() ... Any ideas?

  • Microsoft Enterprise Library Caching Application Block not thread safe?!

    - by AlanR
    Good aftenoon, I created a super simple console app to test out the Enterprise Library Caching Application Block, and the behavior is blaffling. I'm hoping I screwed something that's easy to fix in the setup. Have each item expire after 5 seconds for testing purposes. Basic setup -- "every second pick a number between 0 and 2. if the cache doesn't already have it, put it in there -- otherwise just grab it from the cache. Do this inside a LOCK statement to ensure thread safety. APP.CONFIG: <configuration> <configSections> <section name="cachingConfiguration" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.Configuration.CacheManagerSettings, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" /> </configSections> <cachingConfiguration defaultCacheManager="Cache Manager"> <cacheManagers> <add expirationPollFrequencyInSeconds="1" maximumElementsInCacheBeforeScavenging="1000" numberToRemoveWhenScavenging="10" backingStoreName="Null Storage" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.CacheManager, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" name="Cache Manager" /> </cacheManagers> <backingStores> <add encryptionProviderName="" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.BackingStoreImplementations.NullBackingStore, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" name="Null Storage" /> </backingStores> </cachingConfiguration> </configuration> C#: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.Expirations; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { public static ICacheManager cache = CacheFactory.GetCacheManager("Cache Manager"); static void Main(string[] args) { while (true) { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); // sleep for one second. var key = new Random().Next(3).ToString(); string value; lock (cache) { if (!cache.Contains(key)) { cache.Add(key, key, CacheItemPriority.Normal, null, new SlidingTime(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5))); } value = (string)cache.GetData(key); } Console.WriteLine("{0} --> '{1}'", key, value); //if (null == value) throw new Exception(); } } } } OUPUT -- How can I prevent the cache to returning nulls? 2 --> '2' 1 --> '1' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '1' 2 --> '' 0 --> '0' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '' 2 --> '2' 1 --> '1' Press any key to continue . . .   • Does the ulkJSON library have limitations when dealing with base64 in Delphi 7?

    - by Da Gopherboy
    I'm working on a project that is using Delphi 7 to consume RESTful services. We are creating and decoding JSON with the ulkJSON library. Up to this point I've been able to successfully build and send JSON containing a base64 string that exceed 5,160kb. I can verify that the base64 is being received by the services and verify the integrity of the base64 once its there. In addition to sending, I can also receive and successfully decode JSON with a smaller (~ 256KB or less) base64. However I am experiencing some issues on the return trip when larger (~1,024KB+) base64 is involved for some reason. Specifically when attempting to use the following JSON format and function combination: JSON: { "message" : "/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQEAYABgAAD...." } Function: function checkResults(JSONFormattedString: String): String; var jsonObject : TlkJSONObject; iteration : Integer; i : Integer; x : Integer; begin jsonObject := TlkJSONobject.Create; // Validate that the JSONFormatted string is not empty. // If it is empty, inform the user/programmer, and exit from this routine. if JSONFormattedString = '' then begin result := 'Error: JSON returned is Null'; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; // Now that we can validate that this string is not empty, we are going to // assume that the string is a JSONFormatted string and attempt to parse it. // // If the string is not a valid JSON object (such as an http status code) // throw an exception informing the user/programmer that an unexpected value // has been passed. And exit from this routine. try jsonObject := TlkJSON.ParseText(JSONFormattedString) as TlkJSONobject; except on e:Exception do begin result := 'Error: No JSON was received from web services'; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; end; // Now that the object has been parsed, lets check the contents. try result := jsonObject.Field['message'].value; jsonObject.Free; exit; except on e:Exception do begin result := 'Error: No Message received from Web Services '+e.message; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; end; end; As mentioned above when using the above function, I am able to get small (256KB and less) base64 strings out of the 'message' field of a JSON object. But for some reason if the received JSON is larger than say 1,024kb the following line seems to just stop in its tracks: jsonObject := TlkJSON.ParseText(JSONFormattedString) as TlkJSONobject; No errors, no results. Following the debugger, I can go into the library, and see that the JSON string being passed is not considered to be JSON despite being in the format listed above. The only difference I can find between calls that work as expected and calls that do not work as expect appears to be the size of base64 being transmitted. Am I missing something completely obvious and should be shot for my code implementation (very possible)? Have I missed some notation regarding the limitations of the ulkJSON library? Any input would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance stack!

  • NullReferenceException when changing skin/theme via Application.Current.Resources

    - by CoolCat
    I am writing an wpf application with multiple skins. The code to switch theme is as below: try { Application.Current.Resources.MergedDictionaries.Add( resource ); } catch( Exception ex ) { } The first time the code is called (to switch to a new theme), it is executed successfully; however, any subsequent calls to the same code would throw System.NullReferenceException. The way I set up my themes are similar to what described here: http://www.codewrecks.com/blog/index.php/2008/05/22/simple-skinnable-and-theme-management-in-wpf-user-interface/. Has anyone seen this error before? How do I go about debugging this since the exception is thrown else where? Any help is greatly appreciated. • SMO ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout setting is ignored

    - by Woody
    I am successfully using Powershell with SMO to backup most databases. However, I have several large databases in which I receive a "timeout" error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired". The timout consistently occurs at 10 minutes. I have tried setting ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout to 0, 6000, and to [System.Int32]::MaxValue. The setting made no difference. I have found a number of Google references which indicate setting it to 0 makes it unlimited. No matter what I try, the timeouts consistently occur at 10 minutes. I even set Remote Query Timeout on the server to 0 (via Studio Manager) to no avail. Below is my SMO connection where I set the time out and the actual backup function. Further below is the output from my script. UPDATE Interestingly enough, I wrote the backup function in C# using VS 2008 and the timeout override does work within that environment. I am in the process of incorporating that C# process into my Powershell Script until I can find out why the timeout override does not work with just Powershell. This is extremely annoying! function New-SMOconnection { Param ($server, $ApplicationName= "PowerShell SMO", [int]$StatementTimeout = 0 ) # Write-Debug "Function: New-SMOconnection $server $connectionname $commandtimeout" if (test-path variable:\conn) { $conn.connectioncontext.disconnect() } else { $conn = New-Object('Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server') $server } $conn.connectioncontext.applicationName = $applicationName $conn.ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout = $StatementTimeout $conn.connectioncontext.Connect() $conn } $smo = New-SMOConnection -server $server if ($smo.connectioncontext.isopen -eq $false) { Throw "Could not connect to server $($server)." } Function Backup-Database { Param([string]$dbname) $db = $smo.Databases.get_Item($dbname) if (!$db) {"Database $dbname was not found"; Return} $sqldir = $smo.Settings.BackupDirectory + "\$($smo.name -replace ("\\", "$"))" $s = ($server.Split('\'))[0] $basedir = "\\$s\" + $($sqldir -replace (":", "$")) $dt = get-date -format yyyyMMdd-HHmmss $dbbk = new-object ('Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Backup') $dbbk.Action = 'Database' $dbbk.BackupSetDescription = "Full backup of " + $dbname $dbbk.BackupSetName = $dbname + " Backup" $dbbk.Database = $dbname $dbbk.MediaDescription = "Disk" $target = "$basedir\$dbname\FULL" if (-not(Test-Path $target)) { New-Item $target -ItemType directory | Out-Null} $device = "$sqldir\$dbname\FULL\" + $($server -replace("\\", "$")) + "_" + $dbname + "_FULL_" + $dt + ".bak" $dbbk.Devices.AddDevice($device, 'File') $dbbk.Initialize = $True $dbbk.Incremental = $false $dbbk.LogTruncation = [Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.BackupTruncateLogType]::Truncate If (!$copyonly) { If ($kill) {$smo.KillAllProcesses($dbname)} $dbbk.SqlBackupAsync($server) } $dbbk } Started SQL backups for server LCFSQLxxx\SQLxxx at 05/06/2010 15:33:16 Statement TimeOut value set to 0.   • TemplateBinding with Converter - what is wrong?

    - by MartyIX
    I'm creating a game desk. I wanted to specify field size (one field is a square) as a attached property and with this data set value of ViewPort which would draw 2x2 matrix (and tile mode would do the rest of game desk). I'm quite at loss what is wrong because the binding doesn't work. Testing line in XAML for the behaviour I would like to have: <DrawingBrush Viewport="0,0,100,100" ViewportUnits="Absolute" TileMode="None"> The game desk is based on this sample of DrawingPaint: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa970904.aspx (an image is here) XAML: <Window x:Class="Sokoban.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:Sokoban" Title="Window1" Height="559" Width="419"> <Window.Resources> <local:FieldSizeToRectConverter x:Key="fieldSizeConverter" /> <Style x:Key="GameDesk" TargetType="{x:Type Rectangle}"> <Setter Property="local:GameDeskProperties.FieldSize" Value="50" /> <Setter Property="Fill"> <Setter.Value> <!--<DrawingBrush Viewport="0,0,100,100" ViewportUnits="Absolute" TileMode="None">--> <DrawingBrush Viewport="{TemplateBinding local:GameDeskProperties.FieldSize, Converter={StaticResource fieldSizeConverter}}" ViewportUnits="Absolute" TileMode="None"> <DrawingBrush.Drawing> <DrawingGroup> <GeometryDrawing Brush="CornflowerBlue"> <GeometryDrawing.Geometry> <RectangleGeometry Rect="0,0,100,100" /> </GeometryDrawing.Geometry> </GeometryDrawing> <GeometryDrawing Brush="Azure"> <GeometryDrawing.Geometry> <GeometryGroup> <RectangleGeometry Rect="0,0,50,50" /> <RectangleGeometry Rect="50,50,50,50" /> </GeometryGroup> </GeometryDrawing.Geometry> </GeometryDrawing> </DrawingGroup> </DrawingBrush.Drawing> </DrawingBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </Window.Resources> <StackPanel> <Rectangle Style="{StaticResource GameDesk}" Width="300" Height="150" /> </StackPanel> </Window> Converter and property definition: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Windows; using System.Diagnostics; using System.Windows.Data; namespace Sokoban { public class GameDeskProperties : Panel { public static readonly DependencyProperty FieldSizeProperty; static GameDeskProperties() { PropertyChangedCallback fieldSizeChanged = new PropertyChangedCallback(OnFieldSizeChanged); PropertyMetadata fieldSizeMetadata = new PropertyMetadata(50, fieldSizeChanged); FieldSizeProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("FieldSize", typeof(int), typeof(GameDeskProperties), fieldSizeMetadata); } public static int GetFieldSize(DependencyObject target) { return (int)target.GetValue(FieldSizeProperty); } public static void SetFieldSize(DependencyObject target, int value) { target.SetValue(FieldSizeProperty, value); } static void OnFieldSizeChanged(DependencyObject target, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) { Debug.WriteLine("FieldSize just changed: " + e.NewValue); } } [ValueConversion(/* sourceType */ typeof(int), /* targetType */ typeof(Rect))] public class FieldSizeToRectConverter : IValueConverter { public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { Debug.Assert(targetType == typeof(int)); int fieldSize = int.Parse(value.ToString()); return new Rect(0, 0, 2 * fieldSize, 2 * fieldSize); } public object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { // should not be called in our example throw new NotImplementedException(); } } }

  • FluentNHibernate Unit Of Work / Repository Design Pattern Questions

    - by Echiban
    Hi all, I think I am at a impasse here. I have an application I built from scratch using FluentNHibernate (ORM) / SQLite (file db). I have decided to implement the Unit of Work and Repository Design pattern. I am at a point where I need to think about the end game, which will start as a WPF windows app (using MVVM) and eventually implement web services / ASP.Net as UI. Now I already created domain objects (entities) for ORM. And now I don't know how should I use it outside of ORM. Questions about it include: Should I use ORM entity objects directly as models in MVVM? If yes, do I put business logic (such as certain values must be positive and be greater than another Property) in those entity objects? It is certainly the simpler approach, and one I am leaning right now. However, will there be gotchas that would trash this plan? If the answer above is no, do I then create a new set of classes to implement business logic and use those as Models in MVVM? How would I deal with the transition between model objects and entity objects? I guess a type converter implementation would work well here. Now I followed this well written article to implement the Unit Of Work pattern. However, due to the fact that I am using FluentNHibernate instead of NHibernate, I had to bastardize the implementation of UnitOfWorkFactory. Here's my implementation: using System; using FluentNHibernate.Cfg; using FluentNHibernate.Cfg.Db; using NHibernate; using NHibernate.Cfg; using NHibernate.Tool.hbm2ddl; namespace ELau.BlindsManagement.Business { public class UnitOfWorkFactory : IUnitOfWorkFactory { private static readonly string DbFilename; private static Configuration _configuration; private static ISession _currentSession; private ISessionFactory _sessionFactory; static UnitOfWorkFactory() { // arbitrary default filename DbFilename = "defaultBlindsDb.db3"; } internal UnitOfWorkFactory() { } #region IUnitOfWorkFactory Members public ISession CurrentSession { get { if (_currentSession == null) { throw new InvalidOperationException(ExceptionStringTable.Generic_NotInUnitOfWork); } return _currentSession; } set { _currentSession = value; } } public ISessionFactory SessionFactory { get { if (_sessionFactory == null) { _sessionFactory = BuildSessionFactory(); } return _sessionFactory; } } public Configuration Configuration { get { if (_configuration == null) { Fluently.Configure().ExposeConfiguration(c => _configuration = c); } return _configuration; } } public IUnitOfWork Create() { ISession session = CreateSession(); session.FlushMode = FlushMode.Commit; _currentSession = session; return new UnitOfWorkImplementor(this, session); } public void DisposeUnitOfWork(UnitOfWorkImplementor adapter) { CurrentSession = null; UnitOfWork.DisposeUnitOfWork(adapter); } #endregion public ISession CreateSession() { return SessionFactory.OpenSession(); } public IStatelessSession CreateStatelessSession() { return SessionFactory.OpenStatelessSession(); } private static ISessionFactory BuildSessionFactory() { ISessionFactory result = Fluently.Configure() .Database( SQLiteConfiguration.Standard .UsingFile(DbFilename) ) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<UnitOfWorkFactory>()) .ExposeConfiguration(BuildSchema) .BuildSessionFactory(); return result; } private static void BuildSchema(Configuration config) { // this NHibernate tool takes a configuration (with mapping info in) // and exports a database schema from it _configuration = config; new SchemaExport(_configuration).Create(false, true); } } } I know that this implementation is flawed because a few tests pass when run individually, but when all tests are run, it would fail for some unknown reason. Whoever wants to help me out with this one, given its complexity, please contact me by private message. I am willing to send some $$$ by Paypal to someone who can address the issue and provide solid explanation. I am new to ORM, so any assistance is appreciated.

  • I created a custom (WPF) DataGridBoundColumn and get unexpected behaviour, what am I missing?

    - by aspic
    Hi, I am using a DataGrid (from Microsoft.Windows.Controls.DataGrid) to display items on and on this DataGrid I use a custom Column which extends DataGridBoundColumn. I have bound an ObservableCollection to the ItemSource of the DataGrid. Conversation is one of my own custom datatypes which a (among other things) has a boolean called active. I bound this boolean to the DataGrid as follows: DataGridActiveImageColumn test = new DataGridActiveImageColumn(); test.Header = "Active"; Binding binding1 = new Binding("Active"); test.Binding = binding1; ConversationsDataGrid.Columns.Add(test); My custom DataGridBoundColumn DataGridActiveImageColumn overrides the GenerateElement method to let it return an Image depending on whether the conversation it is called for is active or not. The code for this is: namespace Microsoft.Windows.Controls { class DataGridActiveImageColumn : DataGridBoundColumn { protected override FrameworkElement GenerateElement(DataGridCell cell, object dataItem) { // Create Image Element Image myImage = new Image(); myImage.Width = 10; bool active=false; if (dataItem is Conversation) { Conversation c = (Conversation)dataItem; active = c.Active; } BitmapImage myBitmapImage = new BitmapImage(); // BitmapImage.UriSource must be in a BeginInit/EndInit block myBitmapImage.BeginInit(); if (active) { myBitmapImage.UriSource = new Uri(@"images\active.png", UriKind.Relative); } else { myBitmapImage.UriSource = new Uri(@"images\inactive.png", UriKind.Relative); } // To save significant application memory, set the DecodePixelWidth or // DecodePixelHeight of the BitmapImage value of the image source to the desired // height or width of the rendered image. If you don't do this, the application will // cache the image as though it were rendered as its normal size rather then just // the size that is displayed. // Note: In order to preserve aspect ratio, set DecodePixelWidth // or DecodePixelHeight but not both. myBitmapImage.DecodePixelWidth = 10; myBitmapImage.EndInit(); myImage.Source = myBitmapImage; return myImage; } protected override FrameworkElement GenerateEditingElement(DataGridCell cell, object dataItem) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } } All this works as expected, and when during the running of the program the active boolean of conversations changes, this is automatically updated in the DataGrid. However: When there are more entries on the DataGrid then fit at any one time (and vertical scrollbars are added) the behavior with respect to the column for all the conversations is strange. The conversations that are initially loaded are correct, but when I use the scrollbar of the DataGrid conversations that enter the view seems to have a random status (although more inactive than active ones, which corresponds to the actual ratio). When I scroll back up, the active images of the Conversations initially shown (before scrolling) are not correct anymore as well. When I replace my custom DataGridBoundColumn class with (for instance) DataGridCheckBoxColumn it works as intended so my extension of the DataGridBoundColumn class must be incomplete. Personally I think it has something to do with the following: From the MSDN page on the GenerateElement method (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.controls.datagridcolumn.generateelement%28VS.95%29.aspx): Return Value Type: System.Windows. FrameworkElement A new, read-only element that is bound to the column's Binding property value. I do return a new element (the image) but it is not bound to anything. I am not quite sure what I should do. Should I bind the Image to something? To what exactly? And why? (I have been experimenting, but was unsuccessful thus far, hence this post) Thanks in advance.

  • Execute a SQlite command with Entity Framework

    - by Filimindji
    Hi everybody, I use a SQLite database and Entity Framework (with .net framework 3.5). I'm trying to execute a simple SQL non query command to create a new table in this datase. My Entity Framework already contains the object model for this table : I just want to generate the corresponding table using a command. (By the way, there is maybe a better way to do this. Any ideas someone :) My problem is that I'm not able to execute any command, even the simple commands. Here is my code : EntityConnection entityConnection = new EntityConnection(entitiesConnectionString); Entities db = new Entities(entityConnection); DbCommand command = db.Connection.CreateCommand(); command.CommandText ="CREATE TABLE MyTable (Id int NOT NULL, OtherTable_Id nchar(40) REFERENCES OtherTable (Id) On Delete CASCADE On Update NO ACTION, SomeData nvarchar(1024) NOT NULL, Primary Key(Id) );"; command.ExecuteNonQuery(); I got this error : System.Data.EntitySqlException: The query syntax is not valid., near identifier 'TABLE', line 1, column 8. at System.Data.Common.EntitySql.CqlParser.yyerror(String s) at System.Data.Common.EntitySql.CqlParser.yyparse() at System.Data.Common.EntitySql.CqlParser.Parse(String query) at System.Data.Common.EntitySql.CqlQuery.Parse(String query, ParserOptions parserOptions) at System.Data.Common.EntitySql.CqlQuery.Compile(String query, Perspective perspective, ParserOptions parserOptions, Dictionary`2 parameters, Dictionary`2 variables, Boolean validateTree) at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.MakeCommandTree() at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.CreateCommandDefinition() at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.TryGetEntityCommandDefinitionFromQueryCache(EntityCommandDefinition& entityCommandDefinition) at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.GetCommandDefinition() at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.InnerPrepare() at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior behavior) at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityCommand.ExecuteScalar[T_Result](Func`2 resultSelector) It's seem to be a syntax error, but I can't figure where is the problem and how to resolve it. The entityConnection is ok because I can use any entities generated with EF. I tried with another simple command, but it throw another exception : DbCommand command = db.Connection.CreateCommand(); command.CommandText = "SELECT COUNT(Id) From OtherTable;"; int result = (int)command.ExecuteScalar(); And I got this error, witch is not the same, but may help : System.Data.EntitySqlException: 'Groupe' could not be resolved in the current scope or context. • .NET Framework generates strange DCOM error

    - by Anders Oestergaard Jensen
    Hello, I am creating a simple application that enables merging of key-value pairs fields in a Word and/or Excel document. Until this day, the application has worked out just fine. I am using the latest version of .NET Framework 4.0 (since it provides a nice wrapper API for Interop). My sample merging method looks like this: public byte[] ProcessWordDocument(string path, List<KeyValuePair<string, string>> kvs) { logger.InfoFormat("ProcessWordDocument: path = {0}", path); var localWordapp = new Word.Application(); localWordapp.Visible = false; Word.Document doc = null; try { doc = localWordapp.Documents.Open(path, ReadOnly: false); logger.Debug("Executing Find->Replace..."); foreach (Word.Range r in doc.StoryRanges) { foreach (KeyValuePair<string, string> kv in kvs) { r.Find.Execute(Replace: Word.WdReplace.wdReplaceAll, FindText: kv.Key, ReplaceWith: kv.Value, Wrap: Word.WdFindWrap.wdFindContinue); } } logger.Debug("Done! Saving document and cleaning up"); doc.Save(); doc.Close(); System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(doc); localWordapp.Quit(); System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(localWordapp); logger.Debug("Done."); return System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path); } catch (Exception ex) { // Logging... // doc.Close(); if (doc != null) { doc.Close(); System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(doc); } localWordapp.Quit(); System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(localWordapp); throw; } } The above C# snippet has worked all fine (compiled and deployed unto a Windows Server 2008 x64) with latest updates installed. But now, suddenly, I get the following strange error: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80080005): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {000209FF-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80080005 Server execution failed (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80080005 (CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE)). at System.RuntimeTypeHandle.CreateInstance(RuntimeType type, Boolean publicOnly, Boolean noCheck, Boolean& canBeCached, RuntimeMethodHandleInternal& ctor, Boolean& bNeedSecurityCheck) at System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceSlow(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean skipCheckThis, Boolean fillCache) at System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceDefaultCtor(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean skipVisibilityChecks, Boolean skipCheckThis, Boolean fillCache) at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) at Meeho.Integration.OfficeHelper.ProcessWordDocument(String path, List`1 kvs) in C:\meeho\src\webservices\Meeho.Integration\OfficeHelper.cs:line 30 at Meeho.IntegrationService.ConvertDocument(Byte[] template, String ext, String[] fields, String[] values) in C:\meeho\src\webservices\MeehoService\IntegrationService.asmx.cs:line 49 -- I googled the COM error, but it returns nothing of particular value. • How to write a test for accounts controller for forms authenticate

    - by Anil Ali
    Trying to figure out how to adequately test my accounts controller. I am having problem testing the successful logon scenario. Issue 1) Am I missing any other tests.(I am testing the model validation attributes separately) Issue 2) Put_ReturnsOverviewRedirectToRouteResultIfLogonSuccessAndNoReturnUrlGiven() and Put_ReturnsRedirectResultIfLogonSuccessAndReturnUrlGiven() test are not passing. I have narrowed it down to the line where i am calling _membership.validateuser(). Even though during my mock setup of the service i am stating that i want to return true whenever validateuser is called, the method call returns false. Here is what I have gotten so far AccountController.cs [HandleError] public class AccountController : Controller { private IMembershipService _membershipService; public AccountController() : this(null) { } public AccountController(IMembershipService membershipService) { _membershipService = membershipService ?? new AccountMembershipService(); } [HttpGet] public ActionResult LogOn() { return View(); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult LogOn(LogOnModel model, string returnUrl) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { if (_membershipService.ValidateUser(model.UserName,model.Password)) { if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(returnUrl)) { return Redirect(returnUrl); } return RedirectToAction("Index", "Overview"); } ModelState.AddModelError("*", "The user name or password provided is incorrect."); } return View(model); } } AccountServices.cs public interface IMembershipService { bool ValidateUser(string userName, string password); } public class AccountMembershipService : IMembershipService { public bool ValidateUser(string userName, string password) { throw new System.NotImplementedException(); } } AccountControllerFacts.cs public class AccountControllerFacts { public static AccountController GetAccountControllerForLogonSuccess() { var membershipServiceStub = MockRepository.GenerateStub<IMembershipService>(); var controller = new AccountController(membershipServiceStub); membershipServiceStub .Stub(x => x.ValidateUser("someuser", "somepass")) .Return(true); return controller; } public static AccountController GetAccountControllerForLogonFailure() { var membershipServiceStub = MockRepository.GenerateStub<IMembershipService>(); var controller = new AccountController(membershipServiceStub); membershipServiceStub .Stub(x => x.ValidateUser("someuser", "somepass")) .Return(false); return controller; } public class LogOn { [Fact] public void Get_ReturnsViewResultWithDefaultViewName() { // Arrange var controller = GetAccountControllerForLogonSuccess(); // Act var result = controller.LogOn(); // Assert Assert.IsType<ViewResult>(result); Assert.Empty(((ViewResult)result).ViewName); } [Fact] public void Put_ReturnsOverviewRedirectToRouteResultIfLogonSuccessAndNoReturnUrlGiven() { // Arrange var controller = GetAccountControllerForLogonSuccess(); var user = new LogOnModel(); // Act var result = controller.LogOn(user, null); var redirectresult = (RedirectToRouteResult) result; // Assert Assert.IsType<RedirectToRouteResult>(result); Assert.Equal("Overview", redirectresult.RouteValues["controller"]); Assert.Equal("Index", redirectresult.RouteValues["action"]); } [Fact] public void Put_ReturnsRedirectResultIfLogonSuccessAndReturnUrlGiven() { // Arrange var controller = GetAccountControllerForLogonSuccess(); var user = new LogOnModel(); // Act var result = controller.LogOn(user, "someurl"); var redirectResult = (RedirectResult) result; // Assert Assert.IsType<RedirectResult>(result); Assert.Equal("someurl", redirectResult.Url); } [Fact] public void Put_ReturnsViewIfInvalidModelState() { // Arrange var controller = GetAccountControllerForLogonFailure(); var user = new LogOnModel(); controller.ModelState.AddModelError("*","Invalid model state."); // Act var result = controller.LogOn(user, "someurl"); var viewResult = (ViewResult) result; // Assert Assert.IsType<ViewResult>(result); Assert.Empty(viewResult.ViewName); Assert.Same(user,viewResult.ViewData.Model); } [Fact] public void Put_ReturnsViewIfLogonFailed() { // Arrange var controller = GetAccountControllerForLogonFailure(); var user = new LogOnModel(); // Act var result = controller.LogOn(user, "someurl"); var viewResult = (ViewResult) result; // Assert Assert.IsType<ViewResult>(result); Assert.Empty(viewResult.ViewName); Assert.Same(user,viewResult.ViewData.Model); Assert.Equal(false,viewResult.ViewData.ModelState.IsValid); } } }

  • JSF: Cannot catch ViewExpiredException

    - by ifischer
    I'm developing a JSF 2.0 application on Glassfish v3 and i'm trying to handle the ViewExpiredException. But whatever i do, i always get a Glassfish error report instead of my own error page. To simulate the occurrence of the VEE, i inserted the following function into my backing bean, which fires the VEE. I'm triggering this function from my JSF page through a commandLink. The Code: @Named public class PersonHome { (...) public void throwVEE() { throw new ViewExpiredException(); } } At first i tried it by simply adding an error-page to my web.xml: <error-page> <exception-type>javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException</exception-type> <location>/error.xhtml</location> </error-page> But this doesn't work, i'm not redirected to error but i'm shown the Glassfish errorpage, which shows a HTTP Status 500 page with the following content: description:The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request. exception: javax.servlet.ServletException: javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException root cause: javax.faces.el.EvaluationException:javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException root cause:javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException Next thing i tried was to write ExceptionHandlerFactory and a CustomExceptionHandler, as described in JavaServerFaces 2.0 - The Complete Reference. So i inserted the following tag into faces-config.xml: <factory> <exception-handler-factory> exceptions.ExceptionHandlerFactory </exception-handler-factory> </factory> And added these classes: The factory: package exceptions; import javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandler; public class ExceptionHandlerFactory extends javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandlerFactory { private javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandlerFactory parent; public ExceptionHandlerFactory(javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandlerFactory parent) { this.parent = parent; } @Override public ExceptionHandler getExceptionHandler() { ExceptionHandler result = parent.getExceptionHandler(); result = new CustomExceptionHandler(result); return result; } } The custom exception handler: package exceptions; import java.util.Iterator; import javax.faces.FacesException; import javax.faces.application.NavigationHandler; import javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException; import javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandler; import javax.faces.context.ExceptionHandlerWrapper; import javax.faces.context.FacesContext; import javax.faces.event.ExceptionQueuedEvent; import javax.faces.event.ExceptionQueuedEventContext; class CustomExceptionHandler extends ExceptionHandlerWrapper { private ExceptionHandler parent; public CustomExceptionHandler(ExceptionHandler parent) { this.parent = parent; } @Override public ExceptionHandler getWrapped() { return this.parent; } @Override public void handle() throws FacesException { for (Iterator<ExceptionQueuedEvent> i = getUnhandledExceptionQueuedEvents().iterator(); i.hasNext();) { ExceptionQueuedEvent event = i.next(); System.out.println("Iterating over ExceptionQueuedEvents. Current:" + event.toString()); ExceptionQueuedEventContext context = (ExceptionQueuedEventContext) event.getSource(); Throwable t = context.getException(); if (t instanceof ViewExpiredException) { ViewExpiredException vee = (ViewExpiredException) t; FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(); NavigationHandler nav = fc.getApplication().getNavigationHandler(); try { // Push some useful stuff to the flash scope for // use in the page fc.getExternalContext().getFlash().put("expiredViewId", vee.getViewId()); nav.handleNavigation(fc, null, "/login?faces-redirect=true"); fc.renderResponse(); } finally { i.remove(); } } } // At this point, the queue will not contain any ViewExpiredEvents. // Therefore, let the parent handle them. getWrapped().handle(); } } But STILL i'm NOT redirected to my error page - i'm getting the same HTTP 500 error like above. What am i doing wrong, what could be missing in my implementation so that the exception is handled correctly?

  • JpegBitmapEncoder.Save() throws exception when writing image with metadata to MemoryStream

    - by Dmitry
    I am trying to set up metadata on JPG image what does not have it. You can't use in-place writer (InPlaceBitmapMetadataWriter) in this case, cuz there is no place for metadata in image. If I use FileStream as output - everything works fine. But if I try to use MemoryStream as output - JpegBitmapEncoder.Save() throws an exception (Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0000005). After some investigation I also found out what encoder can save image to memory stream if I supply null instead of metadata. I've made a very simplified and short example what reproduces the problem: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.IO; using System.Drawing; using System.Drawing.Imaging; using System.Windows.Media.Imaging; namespace JpegSaveTest { class Program { public static JpegBitmapEncoder SetUpMetadataOnStream(Stream src, string title) { uint padding = 2048; BitmapDecoder original; BitmapFrame framecopy, newframe; BitmapMetadata metadata; JpegBitmapEncoder output = new JpegBitmapEncoder(); src.Seek(0, SeekOrigin.Begin); original = JpegBitmapDecoder.Create(src, BitmapCreateOptions.PreservePixelFormat, BitmapCacheOption.OnLoad); if (original.Frames[0] != null) { framecopy = (BitmapFrame)original.Frames[0].Clone(); if (original.Frames[0].Metadata != null) metadata = original.Frames[0].Metadata.Clone() as BitmapMetadata; else metadata = new BitmapMetadata("jpeg"); metadata.SetQuery("/app1/ifd/PaddingSchema:Padding", padding); metadata.SetQuery("/app1/ifd/exif/PaddingSchema:Padding", padding); metadata.SetQuery("/xmp/PaddingSchema:Padding", padding); metadata.SetQuery("System.Title", title); newframe = BitmapFrame.Create(framecopy, framecopy.Thumbnail, metadata, original.Frames[0].ColorContexts); output.Frames.Add(newframe); } else { Exception ex = new Exception("Image contains no frames."); throw ex; } return output; } public static MemoryStream SetTagsInMemory(string sfname, string title) { Stream src, dst; JpegBitmapEncoder output; src = File.Open(sfname, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.Read); output = SetUpMetadataOnStream(src, title); dst = new MemoryStream(); output.Save(dst); src.Close(); return (MemoryStream)dst; } static void Main(string[] args) { string filename = "Z:\\dotnet\\gnom4.jpg"; MemoryStream s; s = SetTagsInMemory(filename, "test title"); } } } It is simple console application. To run it, replace filename variable content with path to any .jpg file without metadata (or use mine). Ofc I can just save image to temporary file first, close it, then open and copy to MemoryStream, but its too dirty and slow workaround. Any ideas about getting this working are welcome :)

  • WTSVirtualChannelRead Only reads the first letter of the string.

    - by Scott Chamberlain
    I am trying to write a hello world type program for using virtual channels in the windows terminal services client. public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } IntPtr mHandle = IntPtr.Zero; private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { mHandle = NativeMethods.WTSVirtualChannelOpen(IntPtr.Zero, -1, "TSCRED"); if (mHandle == IntPtr.Zero) { throw new Win32Exception(Marshal.GetLastWin32Error()); } } private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { uint bufferSize = 1024; StringBuilder buffer = new StringBuilder(); uint bytesRead; NativeMethods.WTSVirtualChannelRead(mHandle, 0, buffer, bufferSize, out bytesRead); if (bytesRead == 0) { MessageBox.Show("Got no Data"); } else { MessageBox.Show("Got data: " + buffer.ToString()); } } protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) { if (mHandle != System.IntPtr.Zero) { NativeMethods.WTSVirtualChannelClose(mHandle); } base.Dispose(disposing); } } internal static class NativeMethods { [DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll")] public static extern IntPtr WTSVirtualChannelOpen(IntPtr server, int sessionId, [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPStr)] string virtualName); //[DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll", SetLastError = true)] //public static extern bool WTSVirtualChannelRead(IntPtr channelHandle, long timeout, // byte[] buffer, int length, ref int bytesReaded); [DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll")] public static extern bool WTSVirtualChannelClose(IntPtr channelHandle); [DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "WTSVirtualChannelRead")] [return: MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.Bool)] public static extern bool WTSVirtualChannelRead( [In()] System.IntPtr hChannelHandle , uint TimeOut , [Out()] [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPStr)] System.Text.StringBuilder Buffer , uint BufferSize , [Out()] out uint pBytesRead); } I am sending the data from the MSTSC COM object and ActiveX controll. public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { rdp.Server = "schamberlainvm"; rdp.UserName = "TestAcct"; IMsTscNonScriptable secured = (IMsTscNonScriptable)rdp.GetOcx(); secured.ClearTextPassword = "asdf"; rdp.CreateVirtualChannels("TSCRED"); rdp.Connect(); } private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { rdp.SendOnVirtualChannel("TSCRED", "Hello World!"); } } //Designer code // // rdp // this.rdp.Enabled = true; this.rdp.Location = new System.Drawing.Point(12, 12); this.rdp.Name = "rdp"; this.rdp.OcxState = ((System.Windows.Forms.AxHost.State)(resources.GetObject("rdp.OcxState"))); this.rdp.Size = new System.Drawing.Size(1092, 580); this.rdp.TabIndex = 0; I am getting a execption every time NativeMethods.WTSVirtualChannelRead runs Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. EDIT -- mHandle has a non-zero value when the function runs. updated code to add that check. Any ideas on what is going wrong? EDIT 3 --- After the call that should of read the hello world; BytesRead = 24 Buffer.Length = 1; Buffer.Capacity = 16; Buffer.m_StringValue = "H";

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - Saving child entities on form submit

    - by Justin
    Hey, I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2 and am struggling with saving child entities. I have an existing Invoice entity (which I create on a separate form) and then I have a LogHours view that I'd like to use to save InvoiceLog's, which are child entities of Invoice. Here's the view: <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<TothSolutions.Data.Invoice>" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Log Hours </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="HeadContent" runat="server"> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $("#InvoiceLogs_0__Description").focus(); }); </script> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Log Hours</h2> <% using (Html.BeginForm("SaveHours", "Invoices")) {%> <%: Html.ValidationSummary(true) %> <fieldset> <legend>Fields</legend> <table> <tr> <th>Date</th> <th>Description</th> <th>Hours</th> </tr> <% int index = 0; foreach (var log in Model.InvoiceLogs) { %> <tr> <td><%: log.LogDate.ToShortDateString() %></td> <td><%: Html.TextBox("InvoiceLogs[" + index + "].Description")%></td> <td><%: Html.TextBox("InvoiceLogs[" + index + "].Hours")%></td> <td>Hours</td> </tr> <% index++; } %> </table> <p> <%: Html.Hidden("InvoiceID") %> <%: Html.Hidden("CreateDate") %> <input type="submit" value="Save" /> </p> </fieldset> <% } %> <div> <%: Html.ActionLink("Back to List", "Index") %> </div> </asp:Content> And here's the controller code: //GET: /Secure/Invoices/LogHours/ public ActionResult LogHours(int id) { var invoice = DataContext.InvoiceData.Get(id); if (invoice == null) { throw new Exception("Invoice not found with id: " + id); } return View(invoice); } //POST: /Secure/Invoices/SaveHours/ [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult SaveHours([Bind(Exclude = "InvoiceLogs")]Invoice invoice) { TryUpdateModel(invoice.InvoiceLogs, "InvoiceLogs"); invoice.UpdateDate = DateTime.Now; invoice.DeveloperID = DeveloperID; //attaching existing invoice. DataContext.InvoiceData.Attach(invoice); //save changes. DataContext.SaveChanges(); //redirect to invoice list. return RedirectToAction("Index"); } And the data access code: public static void Attach(Invoice invoice) { var i = new Invoice { InvoiceID = invoice.InvoiceID }; db.Invoices.Attach(i); db.Invoices.ApplyCurrentValues(invoice); } In the SaveHours action, it properly sets the values of the InvoiceLog entities after I call TryUpdateModel but when it does SaveChanges it doesn't update the database with the new values. Also, if you manually update the values of the InvoiceLog entries in the database and then go to this page it doesn't populate the textboxes so it's clearly not binding correctly. Thanks, Justin

  • Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'.

    - by Phani Kumar PV
    i am receiving the follwing error when i am invoking a custom object "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." Following is the scenario when i am getting the error i am invoking a method in a dll dynamically. Load an assembly CreateInstance.... calling MethodInfo.Invoke() passing int, string as a parameter for my method is working fine = No exceptions are thrown. But if I try and pass a one of my own custom class objects as a parameter, then I get an ArgumentException exception, and it is not either an ArgumentOutOfRangeException or ArgumentNullException. "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." I am doing this in a web application. The class file containing the method is in a different proj . also the custom object is a sepearte class in the same file. there is no such thing called a static aseembly in my code. I am trying to invoke a webmethod dynamically. this webmethod is having the customObject type as an input parameter. So when i invoke the webmethod i am dynamically creating the proxy assembly and all. From the same assembly i am trying to create an instance of the cusotm object assinging the values to its properties and then passing this object as a parameter and invoking the method. everything is dynamic and nothing is created static.. :( add reference is not used. Following is a sample code i tried to create it public static object CallWebService(string webServiceAsmxUrl, string serviceName, string methodName, object[] args) { System.Net.WebClient client = new System.Net.WebClient(); //-Connect To the web service using (System.IO.Stream stream = client.OpenRead(webServiceAsmxUrl + "?wsdl")) { //--Now read the WSDL file describing a service. ServiceDescription description = ServiceDescription.Read(stream); ///// LOAD THE DOM ///////// //--Initialize a service description importer. ServiceDescriptionImporter importer = new ServiceDescriptionImporter(); importer.ProtocolName = "Soap12"; // Use SOAP 1.2. importer.AddServiceDescription(description, null, null); //--Generate a proxy client. importer.Style = ServiceDescriptionImportStyle.Client; //--Generate properties to represent primitive values. importer.CodeGenerationOptions = System.Xml.Serialization.CodeGenerationOptions.GenerateProperties; //--Initialize a Code-DOM tree into which we will import the service. CodeNamespace nmspace = new CodeNamespace(); CodeCompileUnit unit1 = new CodeCompileUnit(); unit1.Namespaces.Add(nmspace); //--Import the service into the Code-DOM tree. This creates proxy code //--that uses the service. ServiceDescriptionImportWarnings warning = importer.Import(nmspace, unit1); if (warning == 0) //--If zero then we are good to go { //--Generate the proxy code CodeDomProvider provider1 = CodeDomProvider.CreateProvider("CSharp"); //--Compile the assembly proxy with the appropriate references string[] assemblyReferences = new string[5] { "System.dll", "System.Web.Services.dll", "System.Web.dll", "System.Xml.dll", "System.Data.dll" }; CompilerParameters parms = new CompilerParameters(assemblyReferences); CompilerResults results = provider1.CompileAssemblyFromDom(parms, unit1); //-Check For Errors if (results.Errors.Count > 0) { StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); foreach (CompilerError oops in results.Errors) { sb.AppendLine("========Compiler error============"); sb.AppendLine(oops.ErrorText); } throw new System.ApplicationException("Compile Error Occured calling webservice. " + sb.ToString()); } //--Finally, Invoke the web service method Type foundType = null; Type[] types = results.CompiledAssembly.GetTypes(); foreach (Type type in types) { if (type.BaseType == typeof(System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol)) { Console.WriteLine(type.ToString()); foundType = type; } } object wsvcClass = results.CompiledAssembly.CreateInstance(foundType.ToString()); MethodInfo mi = wsvcClass.GetType().GetMethod(methodName); return mi.Invoke(wsvcClass, args); } else { return null; } } } I cant find anything static being done by me. any help is greatly appreciated. • .NET: Serializing object to a file from a 3rd party assembly

    - by MacGyver
    Below is a link that describes how to serialize an object. But it requires you implement from ISerializable for the object you are serializing. What I'd like to do is serialize an object that I did not define--an object based on a class in a 3rd party assembly (from a project reference) that is not implementing ISerializable. Is that possible? How can this be done? http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/csharp-tutorial-serialize-objects-to-a-file Property (IWebDriver = interface type): private IWebDriver driver; Object Instance (FireFoxDriver is a class type): driver = new FirefoxDriver(firefoxProfile); ================ 3/21/2012 update after answer posted Why would this throw an error? It doesn't like this line: serializedObject.DriverInstance = (FirefoxDriver)driver; ... Error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'OpenQA.Selenium.IWebDriver' to 'OpenQA.Selenium.Firefox.FirefoxDriver'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) Here is the code: FirefoxDriverSerialized serializedObject = new FirefoxDriverSerialized(); Serializer serializer = new Serializer(); serializedObject = serializer.DeSerializeObject(@"C:\firefoxDriver.qa"); driver = serializedObject.DriverInstance; if (driver == null) { driver = new FirefoxDriver(firefoxProfile); serializedObject.DriverInstance = (FirefoxDriverSerialized)driver; serializer.SerializeObject(@"C:\firefoxDriver.qa", serializedObject); } Here are the two Serializer classes I built: public class Serializer { public Serializer() { } public void SerializeObject(string filename, FirefoxDriverSerialized objectToSerialize) { Stream stream = File.Open(filename, FileMode.Create); BinaryFormatter bFormatter = new BinaryFormatter(); bFormatter.Serialize(stream, objectToSerialize); stream.Close(); } public FirefoxDriverSerialized DeSerializeObject(string filename) { FirefoxDriverSerialized objectToSerialize; Stream stream = File.Open(filename, FileMode.Open); BinaryFormatter bFormatter = new BinaryFormatter(); objectToSerialize = (FirefoxDriverSerialized)bFormatter.Deserialize(stream); stream.Close(); return objectToSerialize; } } [Serializable()] public class FirefoxDriverSerialized : FirefoxDriver, ISerializable { private FirefoxDriver driverInstance; public FirefoxDriver DriverInstance { get { return this.driverInstance; } set { this.driverInstance = value; } } public FirefoxDriverSerialized() { } public FirefoxDriverSerialized(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext ctxt) { this.driverInstance = (FirefoxDriver)info.GetValue("DriverInstance", typeof(FirefoxDriver)); } public void GetObjectData(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext ctxt) { info.AddValue("DriverInstance", this.driverInstance); } } ================= 3/23/2012 update #2 - fixed serialization/de-serialization, but having another issue (might be relevant for new question) This fixed the calling code. Because we're deleting the *.qa file when we call the WebDriver.Quit() because that's when we chose to close the browser. This will kill off our cached driver as well. So if we start with a new browser window, we'll hit the catch block and create a new instance and save it to our *.qa file (in the serialized form). FirefoxDriverSerialized serializedObject = new FirefoxDriverSerialized(); Serializer serializer = new Serializer(); try { serializedObject = serializer.DeSerializeObject(@"C:\firefoxDriver.qa"); driver = serializedObject.DriverInstance; } catch { driver = new FirefoxDriver(firefoxProfile); serializedObject = new FirefoxDriverSerialized(); serializedObject.DriverInstance = (FirefoxDriver)driver; serializer.SerializeObject(@"C:\firefoxDriver.qa", serializedObject); } However, still getting this exception: Acu.QA.Main.Test_0055_GiftCertificate_UserCheckout: SetUp : System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException : Type 'OpenQA.Selenium.Firefox.FirefoxDriver' in Assembly 'WebDriver, Version=2.16.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1c2bd1631853048f' is not marked as serializable. TearDown : System.NullReferenceException : Object reference not set to an instance of an object. The 3rd line in this code block is throwing the exception: public void SerializeObject(string filename, FirefoxDriverSerialized objectToSerialize) { Stream stream = File.Open(filename, FileMode.Create); BinaryFormatter bFormatter = new BinaryFormatter(); bFormatter.Serialize(stream, objectToSerialize); // <=== this line stream.Close(); }
