• I am the Webmaster now. Where do I start? [closed]

  I just changed jobs and will soon be in charge of a custom-built ASP.NET CMS and website for a fairly large corporation with global offices. I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did. Analytics, email, advertising, social, SEO, etc.).) Thank you!

  Currently our team started with a new project. Its a new development, and we are having a team of 4 members (with no dedicated architect for this project). Currently we are making a decision of building applications and looking forward a expert suggestions. So in your workspace or in your projects, how often do you commit and build your java ee applications? Is it like once one milestone functionality is over you build and commit or is there any schedules (like everynight) to builds? We are planning to use Hudson as a build tool. Can you kindly guide me? • Consultant in a firm that doesn't understand the tech!

  I got the job as a Consultant in a firm that has 3 other programmers. My job is to rewrite all the old system in Java, Spring etc but the staff programmers only know perl and the manager does not know any programming. I am trying to get them to understand that I have 6 projects to rewrite here but no one has design docs or spec. the staff programmers never had to write any documents. Plus I cant get the manager to understand the new java tech stuff.. he keeps asking some of the staff for views on things but the staff don't know it or understand it. Where do I go from here to make the manager understand that the staff programmers or someone has to write a design document so I know what to build. or if I have to write the documents how do I get the information?

• Releasing poorly written software...

  I've made a poorly written, yet fully functioning website, in (shock, horror, shock) PHP. Everything works as expected, I've implemented the necessary security measures: http://php.net/manual/en/security.php and phpsec.org/projects/guide/ It's poorly written in the sense that it's a bunch of functions thrown together that do something...oddly enough I was consistent with the naming conventions. Would you release something you were not happy with, but worked? I would also like to point out that I don't collect much user information (username, email and password) is about it -- but it's not really the security part I'm worried about, it's the spaghetti code I've written.

• Project life cycle management - Maven vs 'manual' approach

  I have a question concerning the life cycle management of a/multiple project(s), more specific to the advantages/disadvantages of using technologies such as Maven. Currently we work in a continuous-integration environment but lots of things still need to be manually performed (dependency management, deploying, setting up documentation, generating stats, ...). My impression is that this approach often leads to errors, miscommunications or things just are forgotten. I know and have used Maven in the past but in smaller environments and I was always really enthusiastic about it. But I was wondering if someone could share some insights, experiences, pros, contras, ... about the use of Maven (or similar technology) in larger environments and for multiple projects. I would like to use the suggestions made here to start the debate about moving to the next level in project management!

  Our development shop would really like to do more agile projects but we have a problem getting clients on board. Many clients want a budget and a deadline. It's hard to sell a client on an agile project when our competitors do come up with waterfall-based fixed deadlines and fixed prices. We know their fixed numbers are bad, but the client doesn't know that. So, we end up looking bad to the client because we can't fix the price or a deadline but our competitors can. So, how can you get your sales force to successfully sell a project that uses agile development methods, or a product that is developed using such methods? • Django - how should I implement generic apps that have dependencies on other generic apps?

  Hi all, I'm using Marty Alchin's Django app that creates historical records (add, change, delete) based on models found in other Django apps (found in chapter 11 of Pro Django). Question: how do I implement this historical_records app into my other generic Django apps while still maintaining loose coupling? For example, I have a generic app (forecast) that manages a Forecast (of any other model). For one project, I'd like to use historical_records so that I can track changes to a Forecast instance. But I don't want to require all future projects that might want to use forecast to also use historical_records. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

  One possible failure point in ADF applications (and I’ve seen happen) is getting Web designers to build the UI without any knowledge of what ADF does.  The resulting design may look pretty but might be virtually impossible to implement using ADF. To help address this Oracle have released a set of Visio templates which help guide you in “Fusion”/ADF look and feel.  I’ve been lucky enough to have some of our usability teams mock up these templates for some ADF projects I’ve been working on and they are a great help in conceptualising the final applications. • Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it?   My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

• Quick path jumping

  I was just at a lecture, where I noticed the lecturer using a command (probably aliased) to jump to a specific folder. Example: ~/code$ j sciproj ~/projects/sciproj2011/$ This looked quite slick, so I started wondering: Is this a standard utility, and if so, what is the name? I have two theories as to how it works: It can both create, delete and jump to aliases directly from the command-line in the style of the example, without having to set up aliases in a configuration file or script or whatnot manually. It searches the home directory for a folder matching the name and jumps to it. The second option seems a bit slow, however, so the first would be preferred.

• How to design console application with good seperation of UI from Logic

  Is it considered an overkill for console application to be design like MVC , MVP or N tier architecture? If not which is more common and if you can link me to simple example of it. I want to implement a tic tac toe game in console application. I have a solution which hold two projects: TicTacToeBusinessLogic (Class library project) and TicTacToeConsoleApplication (Console application project) to represent the view logic. In the TicTacToeConsoleApplication I've Program.cs class which holds the main entry point (public static void Main). Now I face a problem. I want the game to handle its own game flow so I can: Create new GameManager class (from BL) but this causing the view to directly know the BL part. So I'm a little confused how to write it in an acceptable way. Should I use delegates? Please show me a simple example.

• Building my first ASP.NET WebForms application problem

  Hi I have recently started to learn C#/ASP.NET WebForms and after reading two books I thought I was ready to create my first web application. Problem is I could not have been more wrong. Although I am not quite a beginner as a programmer and have done some programming in Java (a Monopoly game), JavaScript (using jQuery), and PHP (create templates for WordPress), I never really created something that is database driven, and I can't seem to figure where to start. I am very confident in my HTML/CSS/jQuery skills, so that is not the problem. My end goal after becoming comfortable in ASP.NET WebForms is to learn MVC, ADO.NET, and the Entity Framework, and start a career as a .NET developer. I would like if someone could tell me some tutorials that build ASP.NET WebForms applications, such as a blog, so I can see what are the steps in creating an ASP.NET WebForms database driven application. I already have to projects in mind for ASP.NET. One is building a blog and the other building a job board.

• Part-time work as a beginner programmer [on hold]

  I wrote to one company near my university (starting in September) and they responded that they will probably hire me from the work I have already done (some projects and Euler problems solving). It's for 15 hours/week or so in order to not fall behind uni work. They require Python, SQL, XML and a good idea about how the Web works. The job role involves acquiring data from the Web and supplying it as search results for flight seekers (people). I am eager to learn but still, what can I do to become prepared for this? I ask because I tend to gravitate from one technology to the other, trying out things but never mastering it properly. What Web technologies are involved in such a job role? I have two months and want to learn as much as possible because there is much info but I have no idea where to start.

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • How do you deal with the details when reading code?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?

  I'm the admin assistant of the CTO and our organization has recently experienced a lot of growth. Within six months, we have merged with another organization and our Dev team has grown from 8 to 16, with another 8 people in QA. What we're dealing with now is a highly technical individual, with little patience, managing a much larger team than he's accustomed to, 40% of which is junior as well as an increase in the number of projects. Needless to say, my boss is being pulled in too many directions at once. How can I help him manage his workload and his team so that the team feels they're getting enough help and support and remain effective? • New hard drive means re-install everything

  I recently found a good deal on a 7200 RPM 500GB latpop drive and decided to upgrade myself to that. Ive been operating on a 150GB drive for a long time and hadnt been cleaning up old projects, encodings, etc. so it was running thin on space. This was a cheap upgrade (< $90) so I opted for it. I finally got a moment last evening to pop it in and start the fresh installs of everything. Doing so reminded me of how long this process takes for us geeky people. • Career Shifters: How to compete with IT/ComSci graduates

  I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?). • Why Java as a First Language?

  Why is Java so popular as a first language to teach beginners? To me it seems like a terrible choice: It's statically typed. Static typing isn't useful unless you care a lot about either performance or scaling to large projects. It requires tons of boilerplate to get the simplest code up and running. Try explaining "Hello, world" to someone who's never programmed before. It only handles the middle levels of abstraction well and is single-paradigm, thus leaving out a lot of important concepts. You can't program at a very low level (pointers, manual memory management) or a very high level, (metaprogramming, macros) in it. In general, Java's biggest strength (i.e. the reason people use it despite the shortcomings of the language per se) is its libraries and tool support, which is probably the least important attribute for a beginner language. In fact, while useful in the real world these may negatives from a pedagogical perspective as they can discourage learning to write code from scratch.

• Consolidating hotels data from various booking sites with different IDs or reference

  In one of my projects, I have data for hotels, and other booking sites are able to book this hotel. For example: Hotel A - Booking (ID = 4002), Expedia (ID = 123), Priceline (ID = 147) The three booking engines each uses their own Id to reference to Hotel A. I would need to check manually and make the right reference to the hotel. If I have 100,000 hotels, I have to check manually 300,000 (considering 3 booking sites) times? They might provide API, then I can cross check the name, address or latitude/longitude, but if they differ a little bit then I might give the wrong reference to the wrong hotel. I'm sure there are better ways to do this. There are many travel sites out there which do hotel price checking on many booking sites, but how do they do to make sure they are checking the right hotel on these booking sites? Anyone has any experience on this?

• AdventueWorks Design Patterns Project - Part 1

  This is the presentation I did tonight at PHILLYNJ.NET.  It is the first in a multi-part of a series on the Applied Design Patterns.   The solution files are working code with design pattern notes in the comment blocks. After the overview and higher level discussions on Enterprise Design Patterns I reviewed the low level Database Access Library of code.  With walk-throughs of the the code and unint test. After that we went through the ProductPhotoConsoleTest Application that performed intergration testing of the DBAccess Class with the AdventureWorks ProductPhoto table extracting the photos and writing them to a file folder.
