• Squid randomly stops serving requests. How can I resolve this issue?

  The squid (2.7) proxy that I have running on ubuntu 8.10 stops accepting new requests after being online for a while, due to reasons that I can't discover. However doing a squid -k reload resolves the problem immediately. Now I manually run this command by monitoring the log and if i don't see any activity for 5 minutes I reload the config. Now on my quest for a solution I had several ideas: diagnose the root cause and eliminate it setup a script to automatically reload script if no new entries in access.log for the past 3 minutes painstakingly upgrade server to newer ubuntu version while keeping network offline or during off hours to minimize downtime. so i thought I would turn to you for solutions to option 2), as I do not understand squid enough for 1), and I'm avoiding 3) as long as i can. so can ideas?

• Logs show lots of user attempts from unknown IP

  I lost access to my instance which I host on AWS. Keypairing stopped to work. I detached a volume and attached it to a new instance and what I found in logs was a long list of Nov 6 20:15:32 domU-12-31-39-01-7E-8A sshd[4925]: Invalid user cyrus from 210.193.52.113 Nov 6 20:15:32 domU-12-31-39-01-7E-8A sshd[4925]: input_userauth_request: invalid user cyrus [preauth] Nov 6 20:15:33 domU-12-31-39-01-7E-8A sshd[4925]: Received disconnect from 210.193.52.113: 11: Bye Bye [preauth] Where "cyrus" is changed by hundreds if not thousands of common names and items. What could this be? Brute force attack or something else malicious? I traced IP to Singapore, and I have no connection to Singapore. May thought is that this was a DoS attack since I lost access and server seemed to stop working. Im not to versed on this, but ideas and solutions for this issue are welcome.

• SSH - SFTP/SCP only + additional command running in background

  there are many solutions described to get ur SSH-connection forced to only run SFTP by modifying the sshd_config by adding a new group match and give that new group a Forcecommand internal-sftp Well that works great but i would love to have a little more feature. My servers automatically ban IP's which try to connect often in a short time. So when you use any SFTP-Client, which opens multiple connections to work faster it can get banned instandly by the server for a long time. The servers have a script to whitelist users by administrator. I've modified this script to whitelist the user, which runs the script. All i need to do is now get the server to execute that script, when somebody logins. On SSH it's no problem, just put it in .bashrc or something like, but the Forcecommand don't runs these scripts on login. Is there any way to run such a shellscript before or at the same time as the Forcecommand get fired?

• Is there software that can visualize all sounds from the sound card?

  I'm looking for a solution to this problem: When I'm working at my computer, sometimes I'll be using noise-isolation headphones connected to a source other than my computer (e.g., an iPod). I would like to see (this is what I mean by "visualize") some kind of notification on my screen, since I will not be able to hear the sound. Is there any software out there that would accomplish this? I'm interested in seeing any sounds that would normally come out of th sound card. This is for Windows (XP), but I'd be interested in hearing solutions for other flavors, and OS X, as well.

• How to set up an extended desktop on dual monitors in Kubuntu 9.04?

  I'm using my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (which has a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored (i.e. an identical copy) across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors? P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc.. There must be an easier way. edit: Here is a snapshot of the settings.

• High Availability Clustering and Virtualization

  I'm trying to understand how the various virtualization vendors (specifically Amazon EC2, but also VMware and Xen) enable software vendors to provide a real HA solution in the environment where the servers are virtualized. Specifically, if I'm running any HA application (exchange, databases, etc) I need to ensure that my redundant virtual "servers" aren't located on the same physical server. Using in-house virtualization solutions (VMware, Xen, etc) I can provision accordingly as well as check the virtual - physical arrangement. I could, however, accidentally "vmotion" to the same physical hardware. With EC2, I don't even have the ability at provision time to select different physical servers. Since their Cluster Compute Instances are 1 virtual server per physical server it seems to be the only way to guarantee I don't have a false sense of redundancy. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. What are others doing about this problem? If the vendors provided an API where I could get something as simple as a unique physical system identifier I could at least know if I'm going to have an issue. -Tim

• Why does Windows 7 update fail with error 800706BE?

  I have 18 updates appearing for Windows 7 x64 but when I try to install any of them I get the error 800706BE. The Microsoft help that appears gives several solutions: Fix It button. This downloads MicrosoftFixit50123.msi from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9666880 (963KB). After running it displays the message "This Microsoft Fix It has been processed". System Update Readiness Tool. This is actually in response to error 800B0100 which isn't the one I'm seeing. You download the file from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool (362 MB). After running it says "Do you want to install the following Windows software update: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)"

• 8GB, but have to run Windows Xp (32 Bit). Anything I can do with the additional memory?

  I ordered a new computer with 8GB RAM with the plan to run Windows 7, 64Bit. Turns out now, that I need to run a 32Bit OS (XP or 7) due to some software which does not run on 64Bit yet (not even with any of the available compatibility settings / modes). Is there anything I can do with the memory above 4GB in this scenario? I'm willing to consider creative solutions like running a hypervisor under XP that offers the memory as a RAM-Disk for swapping etc. ? The software that does not run on 64Bit is CISCO VPN (there seems to be a half-working solution for that) and CISCO IP phone / webcam integration "CISCO Unified Video Advantage" (there is apparently no solution for that).

• Exchange stops working after changing System Time

  I am currently in a situation where the system time of my windows machine differs 6 hours from the actual local time. I tried chaning the system time of my windows machine 6 hours back to match the actual local time. The issue is, when the system time is changed, Exchange stops working as it wont start anymore. When i change the time back Exchange works again. Here is the error that it shows when im trying to open the management console after changing the system time. The Follwing error occured while attempting to connect to the specified server "servername". The attempt to connect to http://servername/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. • How can I access blocked sites while in China?

  I have some colleagues who need to go to China for work, however while they're there, they can't access a lot of sites. One of which is GMail (Google Apps), which they need for work. We have a UK based Ubuntu server, which I have root access for. What can I do for them? I thought about a Squid proxy, but it might rely on their hotel having port 8080 open, so, not ideal. • Free firewall for Windows Server 2003

  We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Machine here at work that I need to ensure is accessible only from specific set of IP Addresses. The Server is on a LAN and I am aware that one of the possible solutions maybe limit access to the Server's VLAN. However that is not feasible at the moment. I've been searching for a firewall that could do this, Windows' Firewall is pretty limited and I don't see an option in it to limit incoming data based on Source IP addresses. Most free firewalls like Comodo and ZoneAlarm don't work on Windows Server. Any ideas on how to accomplish this would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

• Asus V1S screen dimming randomly

  I have an Asus V1V, which is the same as the Asus V1S except for the video card. I have a problem where the screen will randomly lose brightness or flicker between being lit and not lit. The picture below is of the left hinge, with the cover removed. Pressing one of these cables affects this behaviour, and pressing it in place will resolve the issue for a few hours. My guess means the inverter cable is damaged, based on previous experience. As the picture shows, there are two cables, an LCD cable and what I assume is an inverter cable. I purchased an LCD cable for my model of laptop, but have been unable to find an inverter cable. It seems not to exist. I would like some input on if an inverter cable actually exists, if it is likely the problem, or solutions in general to resolve this problem permanently.

• Hyper-V with a single host NIC

  I'm trying to create a simple Hyper-V test machine, and am having more problems than expected with the basic networking. All other hypervisors I've used (vmware server, vmware player, virtualbox) allow me to use the default single NIC in my machine, and then create guests with "bridged" mode so they appear like a normal machine on the network. With the Hyper-V server, when I create a Virtual Switch and set it to "external", I lose all network access from the host. The solutions I've seen online seem to rely on complex configurations requiring multiple vSwitches and RRAS on the host to get it going. Is it really that complex to get a simple, single-NIC Hyper-V server going, in such a way that I can still use the host? The host is Windows 8.

• Redirect with iptables if destination port is not listened

  I've a server listening on port 10000. But this server is running only in a special case (then some third service is available). Otherwise the port is not listened. Is it possible to redirect the client to another port if 10000 is not listening? I see two solutions: 1) insert/remove iptables rules on server start/stop, but since the server may be killed, it may not insert the correct iptable redirect rule before dieing. 2) make a permanent userspace rule that checks if the port is listening and redirects the packet if not listened. How to do 2) ? Do someone have recipes for ipq? May be someone can suggest me a better way? It is something like fallback redirect: I'll have thousand of clients with different ports (10000-11000) and if their instance of server is not running, whey should be redirected to some page explaining why they don't have and instance connected.

• How do I make control-click in Opera open new tabs?

  In Opera, as opposed to all other modern browsers I know, control-click does not open a new tab. Moreover, I couldn't find any good way to configure this behavior. The best available option seems to be this. However, it's so hacky that it won't work on HTTPS sites unless you enable user javascript there, which doesn't seem like a good idea. There also seem to be other proposed solutions, but none of them seem to work. I'd like this because my laptop has no middle mouse-button, and I'm a creature of habit. Do people have any ideas (for the latest version, 10.50)? I'd like ctrl-click to open a background tab, but I can do with foreground. Thank you!

  I'm a software developer and my workstation is running Win7 Ultimate, 64bit. I want to run a virtual PC on which I can deploy and run the web-software I create, as a virtual web-server PC. I want the VM to also be Windows as that's what I know, the version isn't too important but on that PC I want to run things like MySQL, TomCat, etc. I see VMWare make 'Player', also I see VirtualBox and I know MS also have solutions too, which I've heard good things about. Does it make much difference which I use as far as creating & using VMs? Or are they all pretty similar?

• Error code 0x80070035. The network path was not found

  My system is connected with a local LAN connection with 30 PC's. I'm not able to access the shared drive in the network, but I'm able to ping the IP address in which the drive is present. I have checked to start all the services, which are to be started and i have check the TCP/UDP ports also, but even after that I'm not able to access the drive, the same error message is being displayed again and again. Please help me to rectify the problem. I'm trying to solve the problem for the last 1 week. • Chrome logs me out of everything when I exit--tried cookie-related stuff already

  I've been using Chrome very successfully for a long time. It has always kept me logged in to all my sites even after exiting the app. Recently it started logging me out of everything when I exit Chrome. I've fooled around with all the various advanced cookie settings, and I've cycled through the options hoping that Chrome just needed a wakeup call or a reset or something. I've also deleted all the cookies in case a corrupted one is confusing Chrome. Nothing works! I see cookies when I log in, but they all go away when I exit Chrome. I've searched all over the place and seen only the standard answers relating to resetting cookies, local data, sessions, that sort of thing. Any Chrome gurus out there, please send a telepathic message to my browser asking it to resume its previous excellent behavior. Alternatively, you could suggest other possible solutions.

• How to move your focus out of the text?

  I've got a PDF open in Acrobat. I like to scroll the "standard" way, where I can press the arrow key up to go up by a line or two, and the arrow key down for the opposite. But sometimes I accidentally click the text, and then suddenly the arrow keys control moving the cursor around inside the page instead, so I have to hold it down and move the cursor all the way to the bottom of the page before it'll start scrolling the page down, and then all the way back up if I want to go up again. I can't find any way to move focus out of the text once I've clicked it. I actually have to close Acrobat and reopen the PDF. It's kind of amazing. Solutions?

But after update can't enable 3d monitor, only 2 could be enabled at the same time. Did current things before write question here: Remove all drivers, reboots, re-installs Different cable input's and orders of enabling Tried to enable each monitor from Catalyst and Windows Screen Resolution Spec's: Windows 8.1 Pro XFX HD7970 3 of LG E2442 Cables: 2 DVI 1 HDMI Googled for many time and found one of possible solution is to buy ACTIVE mini DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI, but maybe there are some another more simple solutions?

  Hey, I know there's a bunch of wiki questions already but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wiki thats good for use internally and can be access by some clients? Must be free (F/OSS preferred), Ubuntu (9.10+) compatible, and have per-page permissions. I setup MediaWiki and its fine for internal use but I don't know how, without some severe hackery, how to restrict a client to just view one page and all the images on it and css.   I've been searching for hours for a Unity 4.5 plugin that allows users to watch youtube video in an android app. (I've found several solutions for IOS but not android!). Can anyone give me some pointers? I've tried uwebkit(which only works for IOS), vuforia, and many google.com suggestions I found online. None of them worked and its very fustrating. I just want to watch a youtube video via an unity app in android phone/tablet. It shouldn't be that hard of a task /=.   Considering possible solutions for some improvements I run into this theoretical question and I couldn't find a satisfying answer. Some of you may have first-hand experience with this in practice, so here the question goes: How can I disable password changing for an OpenLDAP user? The account must stay enabled, allowed to log on to workstations and work as usual, but should not be able to change its own password. Can this be done? If so, how difficult is it to implement it? All suggestions are appreciated! For reference: Servers and workstations are to run a mixture of FreeBSD and OpenBSD. Accounts to get password disabled are student or generic workstation accounts. Environment is a school.
