• MacBook: Can't boot into Linux partition after installation.

  Hello I just installed Ubuntu. I created a partition in MacOSx using Disk utility, then deleted the partition and installed Ubuntu on the free space created. After the installation, Ubuntu said it would reboot. I hang on shutdown (which is normal, as google told me), so I used the power button to turn the MacBook off. Now I want to boot into Ubuntu. Pressing option/alt on startup only shows me the MacOSx and Windows partition. Also, the Linux partition isn't showing up on my MacOSx desktop. And in Disk Utility, I can see 3 grayed out partitions: "disk0s4", "disk0s5" and "Linux Swap". What can I do to boot into Ubuntu without losing my other partitions? Thank you for your help.

• RAID across SAS controller ports

  Hi, I'm managing a HP DL360 G5 machine. It has a SAS controller with two ports. Port 1 is attached to 4 drive bays and Port 2 has 2 bays. The machine currently has 3 drives connected to Port 1 with RAID 5 configuration. I'm trying to max out the bays by adding 1 disk in port 1 and 2 in port 2. Can I group those three disks(1 disk-port, 2 disks-port 2) in a RAID 5 configuration?

  There are actually 3 errors here. When I open Word, I get: Word cannot open the existing global template. () If I create a file, type a character and try to save to the desktop (that I have no problems writing to otherwise), I get: Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following: * Free more memory * Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged. () I am just saving to the desktop, and I can save excel files (or anything else) there. After the failure, if I save again, the default file name becomes: .doc...doc Weird. Finally, when I close word completely, I get: Do you want to replace the existing Normal.dotm.

• sar command to generate only CPU utilization and network statistics in Linux

  I want to be able to generate the system activity report every 30 seconds or every minute and store in a file and use it for diagnostic purposes on my VM. So I give an output file for the sar command and read it using the "-f" option. But I only use the CPU utilization and network utilization part of the report and so rest is all that I don't want to save (waste the space in the disk to store these reports). Also the sar files that are generated are all binary. Is there a way to collect these stats for the CPU and network utilization alone? and so save almost 2/3rds the space on the disk?

• Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

  I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

• rEFIt can't sync GPT and MBR after resizing boot camp partition

  I've been trying to follow the instructions here to increase the size of my boot camp partition: http://plonsdale.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/tech-tip-increasing-the-size-of-a-bootcamp-partition-with-free-tools/ I got as far as step 3 when I booted from the rEFIt CD. I selected the partitioning tool and it gave me the following message: Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi Now the Windows boot camp partition doesn't show up when I hold alt when starting my mac. Trying to boot into Windows using the rEFIt CD gives me a message saying no Windows installation is found. I then booted off the Windows 7 install CD and the 'repair' option gave me this message: This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows ...and if I try and go install a fresh version of Windows on this partition using the 'Custom (advanced)' option I get an error about the partition saying: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style

  Which is faster for read access on an EC2 instance; the "local" drive or an attached EBS volume? I have some data that needs to be persisted so have placed this on an EBS volume. I'm using OpenSolaris, so this volume has been attached as a ZFS pool. However, I have a large chunk of EC2 disk space that's going to go unused, so I'm considering re-purposing this as a ZFS cache volume but I don't want to do this if the disk access is going to be slower than that of the EBS volume as it would potentially have a detrimental effect.

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

  Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks.   I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags.   Hi, Having read various posts it seems clear that installing Wubi on a machine which already has safeboot installed with disk encryption is a non-starter at the moment - nor is repartitioning the disk it would seem. However while the c: partion is encrypted - it has an NTFS formatted q: partition that is not encrypted and has about 4GB free - so I was wondering if there was any way to install WUBI using that partion. Obvisouly stil need a means of booting into it without stuffing my safeboot booting mechanism. I'm thinking that this should be possible as the safeboot booting mechanism will get me to the boot choice options and thereafter all references in the boot.ini entry for the wubi installtion should be to files on the non-encrypted NTFS partion and so it should be OK and not attempt any changes to my envrypted c: partion (other than adding the extra entry to boot.ini) ? any thoughts? ta

  Hello everyone! I'm running an Ubuntu 9.10 Linux server. I'm trying to find a way to backup the machine while it is running and from what I see, this eliminates the disk clone utilities. All of the disk clone stuff I have seen for Linux requires that you reboot into a special live CD. So my question is this, what is the best solution for backing up the system while it is running? Also, I don't really care about the OS config too much, I just want to be able to keep my stored files and my programs that I have installed on it. Thanks

  Trying to install Fedora 15 via a live USB made with unetbootin. I get to the unetbootin boot menu, select Fedora-15-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is, I get to this screen, then it drops into a debug shell with the message sh: can't access tty: job control turned off. The last message is dmseg is dracut Warning: No root device "live:/dev/disk/by-label/Fedora-15-Beta-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is" found. Seems to be the same problem detailed here. Tried to try nk1eto's solution but there is no by-label directory in /dev/disk. There's by-id, by-path and by-uuid.

• Can't add German as input language in Windows XP

  I have a laptop that was brought to a computer shop for a hard disk problem. They replaced the disk and reinstalled windows XP, although the English version (the laptop has a German keyboard). I'd like to switch the input language to German. Usually I know how to do this (via "Regional and Language Options"), the problem is when I choose Languages/Details/Add... it doesn't offer me the German keyboard layout: It also uses the "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard" driver - the laptop's keyboard is a 104/105 key German version. I can't seem to change this. Did I just miss the setting, or what is going on here?

  I have a new Alienware M17x running Vista x64. I just found out that it came with a misterious "EISA Configuration" partition. On Disk Management, my Disk 0 tells me that my HD has about 300 GB. The EISA partition has 12 GB. That's big enough to know why is it there. So, this is more of a bundle question. What is this "EISA Configuration" partition? Is it safe to remove it somehow? If so, how can I delete it? I mean join it with the primary partition, or set it as a secondary small partition.

• How to stop a Linux LVM volume group?

  I am currently dealing with a multiple disk failure on a Linux LVM Volume Group that is backed up by a RAID-5 md device. One disk has been taken out completely and another one is showing a limited number of corrupt sectors, due to what seems to have been a misbehaving power supply. The problem is that once an I/O error hits, md takes the array down, since it does not have enough devices for it to be operational. Where md the only one involved, I could mdadm --stop the array and then recreate it to get all devices active again. Unfortunately, the array is a PV in an LVM volume group and I cannot seem to get the kernel to release it. vgchange -an does not seem to do anything, bar spew out a couple of I/O errors. I am obviously missing something, but how in the name of -insert-favorite-deity- do I get LVM to release the underlying PV without rebooting the server?

• Minimum space required for Server 2008 R1 install?

  I'm trying to plan disk space for a virtual environment, and wanting to keep virtual disks as small as possible - mostly as apart from the base OS, the software going onto the VM is less than a few MB, so want to avoid physical disk space going to waste; plus it'll give me an idea of how many VMs I could physically fit in {x}GB of physical drive. For Server 2003, I've had installs on 2GB and 5GB sized virtual disks. However for Server 2008, Microsoft recommends a minimum of 10GB (I assume this is both for x32 and x64). For the record, I will be installing the x32 version. Now I know I could just go ahead and try a small install, but wanted to solicit any practical knowledge as well :-) What's the smallest install of Server 2008 possible? (excluding server core installations).

  Hello, I would like to know what the damage to a drive can be if a scandisk is not performed before a disk defrag. I have looked up some sites that say a scandisk should be run to correct any issues that may be apparent on the system, making sure that the drive is free of errors before a disk defrag is done. I have to perform a defrag on a computer without having physical access to it (using remote connection). I know that the scandisk requires a reboot to the system (causing me to lose my connection) which would be difficult to restart physically if the system does not come back on by itself once rebooted (this has happened before). • Is computer's DRAM size not as important once we get a Solid State Drive?

  I am thinking of getting a Dell X11 netbook, and it can go up to 8GB of DRAM, together with a 256GB Solid State Drive. So in that case, it can handle quite a bit of Virtual PC running Linux, and Win XP, etc. But is the 8GB of RAM not so important any more. Won't 2GB or 4GB be quite good if a Solid State Hard drive is used? I think the most worried thing is that the memory is not enough and the less often used data is swapped to the pagefile on hard disk and it will become really slow, but with SDD drive, the problem is a lot less of a concerned? Is there a comparison as to, if DRAM speed is n, then SDD drive speed is how many n and hard disk speed is how many n just as a ball park comparison?

• Slow file operations, possible I/O error but chkdsk says OK

  I've recently faced a strange problem. I use Directory Opus file manager that suddenly started to report an I/O error when trying to copy files onto one of my disks. The Windows Explorer did copy those files but it was extremely slow. I run chkdsk on this drive (ca. 300GB) and it took it over two days to complete! However it reported no errors found. I run Hard Disk Sentinel that says the drive is OK. But the files still read and write extremely slow! Can anyone advise me what to do? I have a spare space I am copying my files for backup now but should I get rid of this disk? Or can I try to "heal" it somehow? Many thanks for your ideas!
