  All tables are InnoDb. I would rather not use mysqldump, because the shard sizes will be about 200 GB (about 700 million rows), and that will take too long. I was hoping to just stop mysql for an hour, copy the data files to a new machine, and start back up. But you can't do this with InnoDb, as some data is in the shared tablespace. Even if I have the innodb_file_per_table option set. This is not a website, but a custom application, used by tens of thousands right now, so uptime and performance are important. I suppose I could add logic into my server application to allow for gradual rebalancing / moving of a shard. Does anyone have a better idea?

• nfs server on cygwin slow

  The setup: We run an instance of cygwin nfsd on a Windows 2008 Server (Xeon 3,2 GHz). There are several Sun Solaris and SunOS machines accessing the shares. This is the exports file: /disk3 (rw,all_squash) /disk2 (rw,all_squash) Those paths are soft linked to the relevant cygdrive/d/path/to/dir paths. Some of the folders contain up to 10k files. The Problem: ls -la on the mounted folder on the sun boxes takes 2 - 3 minutes and the general read performance is really bad. cat filename displays the file in slow bursts and this hurts performance on tasks that access those shared files heavily. Processor load is not the issue, the nfs server idles most of the time, the cygwin tasks never get over 1% load.

• Tools to monitor guest OS performance in vSphere

  I am looking for some tool or way to retrieve performance data from guest VMs running under vSphere 4.1. I am currently interested in the 4 basic metrics: CPU(%), Memory(%), Disk availability(%) & Network utilisation(Kb/s). The issue I have is that all of vSphere's performance data is from a ESXi host perspective (active, shared, consumed, overhead, swapped etc.) which is far removed from the data from the VM's own perspective. For instance, I have a Windows server VM idling, using around 410MB (~25% of its allocated 2GB) as reported by Task Manager, and this is the value I'm after. vSphere's metrics seem unable to arrive at this figure by any reliable and repeatable means. Is anyone aware of tools that can obtain this kind of data? The simpler, the better.

• What is the advantage of iSCSI over SMB?

  At my house I'm running a Hyper-V server with a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM acting as a file server. Files are shared across my network using SMB. (Also, the machine is using a PERC 6/i RAID card but I don't think that's important) I'm thinking about setting up a dedicated SAN (iSCSI) machine and then switching my Hyper-V server to ESXi. What are the advantages of using iSCSI versus SMB? I think I would still need a file server OS (eg. Win 2k8) sharing files via SMB so I'm not sure the end result would be any different than my current setup...

• Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

  I have nginx 1.2.0-1 on debian 6.0.5. I have file test.css. I fill it with "abcd1234". Open it in browser. Then I change the content to "mnop". I receive "abcd" in response. I have all the files in folder shared between Windows (host) and Debian (guest) using Virtual Box. When I put the file elsewhere the problem does not occur! Any idea what can cause this? • SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

• Backup SQL server db issue: delete old backup files

  I tried to use sqlmaint.exe tool to back up a database on a remote PC. Here is an example of backup: sqlmaint.exe -S remoteSQLServer\SQLInstance -U username -P pwdxxx -D myDB -BkUpMedia DISK -BkUpDB C:\MSSQL_Backups -DelBkUps 3days ... Here I specified to delete backups older than 3 days. However, the job seems not deleting old bak files on the remote PC(where the SQL server sits). The remote PC has Windows 2008 Server. I also set the C:\MSQL_Backups as shared network drive for EnyOne as owner. My understanding is that the job will delete any bak files older than 3 days. Not sure what I missed? By the way, the job runs at a box with SQL server 2005 installed.

• Windows Home Server Passwords Do Not Match

  I have a Windows Home Server that chunks along just fine most of the time. I've never bothered to put it on a UPS and so it's vulnerable to power outages that happen a few times a year. This most recent time, it came back and seemed to be fine, but whenever I try to access a shared folder I get "Passwords do not match". They matched before the power went out, and I couldn't update the WHS password since I apparently didn't know the old one. How do I fix this? • How can I allow individual developers to have their own space to create git repositories?

  I have a server that is essentially a gitosis setup. I have a git user that has access to all the shared repositories. What I would like to do is have each developer be able to have their own "area" on this server to create their own repositories. I'd like these areas to be able to be viewable via gitweb. How can this be done that would require the least maintenance in terms of adding users and repositories? One obvious solution would be to just allow each developer to create repositories on the git login and have branches named something like <devname>-<reponame>. But I could see this getting unmanageable as the number of developers grows.

  I currently have two servers both with linux software RAID1 configurations. They use heartbeat and DRBD to create a shared DRBD device that hosts a a exported NFS directory. The servers run Ubuntu Server with a LXDE GUI and some IP These servers are going to be placed on fishing vessels to act has redundant storage for IP cameras. My boss wants me to figure out the most efficient way to create these servers. We might be looking at pushing out several systems a week. • My windows xp wireless hotspot isn't working

  I add the hotspot the regular way. Yet it doesn't show up as available when I try to connect to it using my other Ubuntu laptop. And nothing can connect to it. Yesterday, I successfully made it work for 5 minutes and then it stopped without me changing any configuration. I've already tryed resetting the DNS. Edit: I've updated my Broadcom 802.11b/g driver to a generic but more recent version. I've also repaired the WMI, now the advanced tab of my primary connection is available and the hand meaning the connection is shared appeared. But the computers still connect the wrong way around. (Windows to ubuntu instead of ubuntu to windows) Reinstalled SP3...

• How to detect when a user copies files from a server over the network?

  I have a few virtual servers + desktops that are used for shared development with remote users, including some consultants. Each user has an account with access to most aspects of the server. I don't want to prevent people from being productive, or track passwords or read emails, but I do want to know when and what files they copy from the virtual server or what they upload from the server to a remote site, and what if any applications they install. This will help make sure my IP is protected, that no one is installing tools they shouldn't, and that things are licensed appropriately. What is the simplest way to do this? In order of importance I would say detecting file transfers off the machine to be most critical. Thanks

  Hi We have a dedicated sql-server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. The setup is: D: (data files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as log files) (raid 10) E: (log files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as data files) (raid 1) F: (transaction log backup) - stored remote on a SAN Today we moved our log files to new disks (from F: to E:). From a shared volume ( F:(SAN)) to dedicated local disks (E:). What then happend was that the "disk time", "avg. transfer time" and "avg disk write queue length" increased on the volume where we have the data files (D:) (not on the volume where the log files are located). The data volume and log volume does not share disks, however they share the same controller card. "Disk idle time" is low for all volumes. One thought is ofcourse that the controller card might be overloaded. But, we need more ideas on where the problem might be.

• What's the fastest way to store/access large files?

  I do a lot of video editing on my Mac and need a way to store very large (30 GB) files, and don't have room on my HD. A USB/Firewire external hard drive would work, but it seems way too slow for consistently working with such large files. I've also considered buying another computer, with a large hard drive, and putting it on the same network with a shared folder. What's the fastest / most efficient way to do this? Please consider USB 2.0 speeds, hard drive read times, ethernet speeds, etc. Are there other options I should consider?

• How can I register a custom protocol with xdg?

  I've been struggling this morning trying to associate an application with a custom protocol, namely emacsclient and org-protocol. I'm calling this protocol from a webbrowser bookmarklet, and I get the following behaviour : In chromium, the "Launch Application" dialog comes up, and calls xdg-open org-protocol://... which ends up firing a new chromium frame. In firefox, I've tried setting network.protocol-handler.app.org-protocol to an empty string or my emacsclient path, anyhow I get the following error message : "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (org-protocol) isn't associated with any program" without even showing any external application selection dialog. I'm not using any desktop environment, so I need to make this work strictly with xdg, however, despite reading the shared mime info spec etc, I still can't fathom a working configuration.

• How does azure memory usage work?

  I have a windows azure website. In the dashboard it shows me that I have used 1.51 GB of the 2GB available per hour. I keep increasing the number of instances available in the shared node so the site doesn't shut down. After each hour finishes, the memory usage still shows 1.51 GB used. I assume this would start at ZERO and then be used as time goes on, but that doesn't appear to be the case. How does server memory work? What are some reasons my application using this much memory? (I use no output caching and generally have just built off of the basic MVC templates provided in visual studio.) What other considerations should I be making to get the amount of memory needed to decrease?

  I need a Windows application that works like *nix's lftp. The Windows host will download the latest changes made to FTP Server #1, and upload those changes to FTP Server #2. Server #2 can't pull files directly from Server #1 because it's a www shared host with no shell account. The requirements are: 1. Windows app available for XP/Vista/W7 2. • Prevent users from creating / copying / moving anything except .exe

  We have a program that compiles executables into a folder into c:\bin. Ideally I would like to share this folder so users can access the exe's within but stop them creating any other files in there. The reason for this is to stop users grabbing source code and putting it in a shared drive then taking it. We have a Domain Controller setup and all the users belong to a specific security group. Is there any way to achieve this? EDIT: TO clarify, I need to stop users from creating or moving files INTO the C:\bin folder which are not executables.

• When send a meeting invite to a specific user, you get a undeliverable response back from another us

  We have a user, where it doesn't matter who sends it, but if you send her a meeting invite through outlook (exchange 2007), you get a non-deliverable message back from another user. Same one all the time though. I checked her shared calendar properties and removed the user from the list. I checked and made sure she wasn't using cache mode. I checked the manage full permissions and send permissions within exchange and the user is not listed. What am I missing? Notes: Using Outlook 2007 with Exchange 2007 on a XP box and Server 2008.

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? (i.e. where data & settings of possibly affected applications need to be preserved) rpm -Va shows a number of entries like: /sbin/ethtool: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /sbin/ethtool /usr/libexec/mysqld: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /usr/libexec/mysqld along with /usr/share entries with T flag (apparently filetime diff, seems safe) The machine is up & running fine, but may not be whenever a reboot occurs. Clue-in as to the real state of the machine (hosed or OK) appreciated Thanks
