• How are Scala traits compiled into Java bytecode?

  I have played around with Scala for a while now, and I know that traits can act as the Scala equivalent of both interfaces and abstract classes. Recently I've been wondering how exactly traits are compiled into Java bytecode. I found some short explanations that stated traits are compiled exactly like Java interfaces when possible, and interfaces with an additional class otherwise. I still don't understand, however, how Scala achieves class linearization, a feature not available in Java. Could anyone explain or provide a good source explains how traits compile to Java bytecode?

• Stop SWF file from repeating

  Hey people, I have converted a short clip to an .swf file, i want to implement it on my website: <object width="400" height="300"> <param name="movie" value="movie.swf"> <embed src="movie.swf" width="400" height="300"> </embed> </object> When i play it it autoplays (that's fine) but it also keeps repeating over and over, i'd like it to stop at the end and just display the end frame (as mentioned i converted a movie so i cant do it with actionscript in the .fla file). • Parameter passing become pointer for integer

  I am working on a c/Linux app for a device. I consume a web service (in WCF/c#) and use gSOAP for the same. The issue is that the parameters in the service methods become pointers for simple data types like int, short etc also. I initially used the same service exposed as ASMX web service and the client proxy generated using gSOAP created methods with parameters passed as values. But once the service has been upgraded to WCF, all the parameters became pointers. Can somebody help?

• How do you keep a balance between working, training, health and family?

Personally, I also find it hard to motivate myself to keep healthy. Every now and again, I meet a fantastic coder who has it clocked; they are up to date with the latest dev news, have time to read about good programming practices, and to finish it off, have happy wives/husbands and families. How do you guys/gals manage it in the short 24 hours a day that we all have?

• How to get users to read error messages?

  If you program for a nontechnical audience, you find yourself at a high risk that users will not read your carefully worded and enlightening error messages, but just click on the first button available with a shrug of frustration. So, I'm wondering what good practices you can recommend to help users actually read your error message, instead of simply waiving it aside. Ideas I can think of would fall along the lines of: Formatting of course help; maybe a simple, short message, with a "learn more" button that leads to the longer, more detailed error message Have all error messages link to some section of the user guide (somewhat difficult to achieve) Just don't issue error messages, simply refuse to perform the task (a somewhat "Apple" way of handling user input) Edit: the audience I have in mind is a rather broad user base that doesn't use the software too often and is not captive (i.e., not an in-house software or narrow community). A more generic form of this question was asked on slashdot, so you may want to check there for some of the answers.

• Nested queries in Arel

  I am attempting to nest SELECT queries in Arel and/or Active Record in Rails 3 to generate the following SQL statement. SELECT sorted.* FROM (SELECT * FROM points ORDER BY points.timestamp DESC) AS sorted GROUP BY sorted.client_id An alias for the subquery can be created by doing points = Table(:points) sorted = points.order('timestamp DESC').alias but then I'm stuck as how to pass it into the parent query (short of calling #to_sql, which sounds pretty ugly). How do you use a SELECT statement as a sub-query in Arel (or Active Record) to accomplish the above? Maybe there's an altogether different way to accomplish this query that doesn't use nested queries?

• How do CSS sprites work?

  I have 3 different images and want to create a sprite using CSS. I understand that will reduce HTTP requests. However, I am totally new to this concept and have no idea as to how to approach this. What would be best bet for me? Also I have seen there are some CSS sprite generators where you submit a .zip of images and it combines them. I tried doing that, but did not understood what was happening. Any guidance regarding creating and using CSS sprites would be highly appreciated. Update: I have gone through the A List Part article but it was not very clear to me. Can someone provide an example of using a CSS sprite? [A short, self-contained example in an answer is preferable for SO than just a link to an example elsewhere. –ed.]

• Add php extension (geoip.so) to Zend Studio for code validation

  Hi everyone, just have a short question here. I've just installed new php extension (geoip.so) using pecl to /usr/local/zend/lib/php_extensions/ and added the extension to the php.ini. Run the code and it works just fine. But Zend Studio is giving warning of undefined geoip function. Try to add the directory path above to the include path of Zend Studio, still the warning exists. Any clue how to remove this warning? Thank you in advance!! /Agustinus

• JKS, CER, SignCode issue

  Currently, I've got an intresting problem about signing an EXE file using the SignCode tool from Microsoft and a certificate (from GlobalSign)... So, we've bought a new certificate as the current one will expire in short time. The original format is JKS. I exported this certificate from .JKS to .CER so I can install on local machine in the Root Trusted Certificates section. I've installed it and if I open the certmgr.msc I can see it, but if I open the Control Panel - Internet Options - Content - Certificates - Root Trusted Certificates etc then I can't see it... I thought it should be here as well. When I run the signcode.exe tool I get the "unable to open a csp provider with the correct private key" error message. Note! The signcode.exe command is correct, because it works if I test with the old certificate. Please advise. Thank you in advance! Serge

• Dialog, LinearLayout, ScrollView size issues

  I'm building a dialog class which inherits from Dialog, and all internal UI is programmatic. It's structured in the following way: Dialog +LinearLayout ++TextView ++ScrollView +++LinearLayout ++++ListView Unfortunately, when I show() the Dialog, it's too short. I'd like it to maximize and cover as much of the screen as possible, but only when there are enough items in the ListView to warrant it. I haven't found my answer in the docs, and I haven't been able to get it to work by setting WRAP_CONTENT as layout parameters, or setting heights manually. What is the proper way to approach this?   Hi, My project has a requirement to implement look-ahead caching i.e. triggering another request on invokation of a specific request. The following details in short the implementation - HttpModule parses the SOAPRequest and matches entry in a configuration file for look-ahead candidate. If the request matches, it prepares the Parameters dictionary and starts appropriate workflow. Single workflow runtime is used across all requests is ensured through initializing the runtime instance at Application_Start event and stored in Application Dictionary. Using persistence service and DefaultScheduler service. We can't implement windows service model, as current requirement mandates passing the SOAPRequest parameters as arguments. ManualSchedulerService is not in contention due to synchronous nature of it's actual behaviour. Still the performance is pretty bad and product team is not happy. Can anybody suggest me better solution? Thanks, Samir

• Add UITabBar Control!

  hi, I m stuck in a really simple problem. And i m afraid my question might annoy some people. The problem i am facing in short is that i want to add UITabBar Control to my iphone application other than the main screen. Let me explain, I have done everything successfully Added UItabbar control from IB in the main window's xib, added a variable at the back end , associated it by dragging the line. Also added a UIWindow variable and wrote these lines . [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; when i launch the application a blank window appears and tab bar shows on its bottom. But the problem i dont want to add it to a particular window which is inside my app. Its no the first screen of my app. Its actually the 3rd screen of my app. Can anybody help ? thanks Taimur

• NSLog crashing app using 3.1.3 software

  Hi guys - the other day I had a bug submitted for my app from a user on an ipod touch with 3.1.3 software. It was a strange bug as no-one else has submitted it yet. Long story short, it appears that anywhere where I have NSLog() in code it will actually crash the app. I tried stripping out ALL the code other than NSLog(@"hello") and running on my iphone (3.1.3) it indeed did crash. I removed the NSLog and it worked. Has anyone else had this problem?? PS) I am now aware that we shouldn't release an app with NSLog still in use... so they've all gone now!

• iPhone app: recover view after didReceiveMemoryWarning

  The app in question has a MainView->ModalView pair. The ModalView is shown via UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal. In case of didReceiveMemoryWarning, MainView is dumped (since it is not visible) and the app stays "alive" but when you flip back there is a (very) short period of time when the screen is blank (since the modal dialog is returning to a now-deallocated view). When the animation transition is over, MainView is regenerated and all is ok. I just would like to somehow regenerate MainView before returning from ModalView (in case of a memory warning). Is this a good idea? Am I doing something wrong as far as the warning is concerned? Thanks

• Detect block size for quota in Linux

  The limit placed on disk quota in Linux is counted in blocks. However, I found no reliable way to determine the block size. Tutorials I found refer to block size as 512 bytes, and sometimes as 1024 bytes. I got confused reading a post on LinuxForum.org for what a block size really means. So I tried to find that meaning in the context of quota. I found a "Determine the block size on hard disk filesystem for disk quota" tip on NixCraft, that suggested the command: dumpe2fs /dev/sdXN | grep -i 'Block size' or blockdev --getbsz /dev/sdXN But on my system those commands returned 4096, and when I checked the real quota block size on the same system, I got a block size of 1024 bytes. Is there a scriptable way to determine the quota block size on a device, short of creating a known sized file, and checking it's quota usage?

• jQuery - How to remove a DOM element BEFORE complete page load

  Now this may seem like a silly question, but I need to know how to remove a DOM element BEFORE it is displayed to the user. In short, I am using a div that has a background image alerting the user to enable javascript before proceeding. If the user has javascript enabled I am using jQuery to remove the DOM element, in this case $(".check-js") which is the div housing the image. Using the conventional methods to unload DOM objects as follows does not work because it waits for the page load to complete, then removes the element, causing the image to flicker on and off each time the page loads: $(function(){ $(".check-js").css( {display:"none"} ) }) I simply want to remove the div if the user has js enabled, and he must never see this div. Any suggestions and I will be grateful, thanks.

• MPMoviePlayerController - streaming works on 3GS, not on anything pre-3GS

  I am having some serious issues and annoyances with MPMoviePlayerController. In my app you can watch trailers for some movies in .mov format. I have tested with a friend and had users report that it does not work on their device, which are all 3G. I have tested on my own, a 3GS and playback works fine. I have tried on a 1st gen iPhone and it doesn't work. So I am lead to believe it's a memory issue, and that it's simply stopping the playback and returning to the previous screen. Below is the code I use to launch the player, which is straight out of the MoviePlayer example from Apple. MPMoviePlayerController *mp = [[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL URLWithString:trailerURL]]; if (mp) { self.moviePlayer = mp; [mp release]; [self.moviePlayer play]; } I have tried to check the NSError from the notifications, but the only thing I get is "An unknown playback error occurred" for both the localizedDescription and localizedRecoverySuggestion, making it impossible to figure out exactly why it's not working. I have seen many examples of people who just have issues with the movie player, but it's starting to annoy me that it sometimes seem to work fine and other times it just doesn't (again, appearing like a memory issue).   When creating a web application that some how displays the display of a unique identifier for a recurring entity (videos on YouTube, or book section on a site like mine), would it be better to use a uniform length identifier like a hash or the unique key of the item in the database (1, 2, 3, etc). Besides revealing a little, what I think is immaterial, information about the internals of your app, why would using a hash be better than just using the unique id? In short: Which is better to use as a publicly displayed unique identifier - a hash value, or a unique key from the database? Edit: I'm opening up this question again because Dmitriy brought up the good point of not tying down the naming to db specific property. Will this sort of tie down prevent me from optimizing/normalizing the database in the future? The platform uses php/python with ISAM /w MySQL.

• Concerns about reading a file in Flash 10

  Hi, I'd like to read an xml file on a user's machine (which can be kind of large). There's no point in me sending the file to my server as I can do all the work I need on the file right on the client's machine. Not sure if this is a good fit though, was wondering if anyone can answer these questions before I dive in: I see at adobe's website that Flash 10 has like 94% penetration, is this true, I thought it was just released not too long ago? After opening the xml file in flash, is it possible to just throw it to a javascript function on my same page for further processing? I'd like to go into flash world for as short a time as possible. Is it at all common to use flash for file upload stuff? I heard aol/flickr are? I would need to buy flash in order to do this right, they don't have a free ide/compiler yet? Thanks

• iPhone UITableView trigger a parent method?

  Okay, so I'm working on an iPhone app with a preferences-esque section where there's a base TableView, which has one section, and several rows of customized cells to hold a name and a value label. Clicking on a row brings up another View, which allows the user to pick from a list (another TableView), and select an item. All of these TableViews are done programatically. The base TableView has a property that holds a Controller instance for each of the "pick from the list" Views. Each of the "pick from the list" views has a property called chosenValue that has the currently-selected option. I've gotten the UI to handle the didSelectRowAtIndexPath to update the chosenValue property and then "pop" the view (going back to the main TableView). But, even though the main TableView's cellForRowAtIndexPath method references the chosenValue property of the subview that's held in a property, the view doesn't update when an item is selected. In short, how can the sub-view trigger a reloadData on the parent object, after it "pops" and unloads?
