• Android Camera in Portrait on SurfaceView

  Hello, I tried several things to try to get the camera preview to show up in portrait on a SurfaceView. Nothing worked. I am testing on a Droid that has 2.0.1. I tried: 1) forcing the layout to be portrait by: this.setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE); 2) using Camera.Parameters parameters = camera.getParameters(); parameters.set("orientation", "portrait"); parameters.setRotation(90); camera.setParameters(parameters); Is there something else I can try? If this a bug in Android or the phone how can I make sure that this is the case so that I have proof to inform the client? Thanks, Prasanna

• Google Chrome: XMLHttpRequest.send() not working while doing POST.

  I'm working on an application that allows the user to send a file using a form (a POST request), and that executes a series of GET requests while that file is being uploaded to gather information about the state of the upload. It works fine in IE and Firefox, but not so much in Chrome and Safari. The problem is that even though send() is called on the XMLHttpRequest object, nothing is being requested as can be seen in Fiddler. To be more specific, an event handler is placed on the "submit" event of the form, that places a timeout function call on the window: window.setTimeout(startPolling, 10); and in this function "startPolling" sequence is started that keeps firing GET requests to receive status updates from a web service that returns text/json that can be used to update the UI. Is this a limitation (perhaps security-wise?) on WebKit based browsers? Is this a Chrome bug? (I'm seeing the same behaviour in Safari though).

  I have been succesfully using the command line database deployment tool VSDBCMD on my dev and test environments but the tool fails in our integration environmrnt. I am using the VS 2010 version of the tool. The servers have all of the prerequisites including: .net 4.0 sql server compact edition 3.5 sp1 (as well as the full edition of 2008) sql server 2008 server management objects sql server 2008 native client sql server system clr types msxml 6 all of the dependent DLLs included in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\desktop*.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5*.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSTSDB\Deploy**. The only reference to this error that I have been able to find has to do with a bug in the VS 2008 edition when the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0 key is missing. In my case the 10.0 version of the key exists. Has anyone else encountered this?

  Hi, I have asked this question on asp.net forums (http://forums.asp.net/t/1545006.aspx) but i had no valid answer therefore i'll try this here as well. I was working on migrating MVC1 app to MVC2 today and i have come across a problem while changing the ValidationMessage to ValidationMessageFor implementation. The below is the selectlist in my View <%=Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.SecurityQuestions[0].Question, "Some Security question", new { @class = "form_element_select" })%> The below code works fine and i can see the validation message came from modelstate. <%= Html.ValidationMessage("SecurityQuestions_0__Question")%> but this one does not work: <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.SecurityQuestions[0].Question)%> SecurityQuestions is a generic list in my model public List<SecurityQuestion> SecurityQuestions { get; set; } Is this somewhat a bug in "ValidationMessageFor" or am i missing something here?

• UINavigationController + UITableView + UISearchBar + UISplitViewController

  I have an annoying problem. I have an UINavigationController with an UITableView in the Master (Left) pane of my UISplitViewController. When I do normal operations, things push on on to the navigation controller fine. However, when I do a search and push things on, it's like it doesn't account for the space the navigation bar needs. It pushed the new controller on at the very top, then puts the navbar on, overlapping the content! I should add it works fine when doing it in portrait (in the popup menu) and on the iphone. Is this an UISplitViewController bug?

• UIWebView frame resize does not resize the inner content...

  Hi, if I change the frame of a UIWebView (scalesPageToFit property is YES), what do I have to do that the zooming level of a currently displayed webpage persists? Let's say I have a UIWebView frame with a width of 200 pixels, and has zoomed into a website so that only one column is visible. After changing the width to 300, I still see the column with the same size, and additional space at the left and right. But what I would need is that I still only see this column, but bigger. Any ideas what I have to do to achive this? I tried a lot of things, but nothing worked so far. By the way, the iPhone built in Safari browser does exactly this thing (with the same website, so it's not content related) when rotating the iPhone... I see the same content, bug bigger, NOT more content as it happens with my current version of code. Thanks for helping! Markus

• Set caret position in contenteditable div layer in Chrome/webkit

  Hello, I'm trying to set the caret position in a contenteditable div layer, and after a bit of searching the web and experimenting I got it to work in firefox using this: function set(element,position){ element.focus(); var range= window.getSelection().getRangeAt(0); range.setStart(element.firstChild,position); range.setEnd(element.firstChild,position); } [...] set(document.getElementById("test"),3); But in Chrome/webkit it selects all of the content in the div. Is this a bug with webkit or am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance.

• ADO Entity Framework 4 to WPF Datagrid. DatagridComboBox nightmare.

  The WPF datagrid -seems- like it's going to work, but the combobox implementation does not work straight from the designer. So I'm left wandering around in the XAML randomly changing things trying to get it to work. The problems are numerous. I want to display a foreign key relationship (with drop down) instead of a bunch of numbers for a selection. It seems like it shouldn't be this hard. I can get the right values to show up (their description instead of an ID), but the table freaks out thinking that all the values have been modified. If I select a drop down, it refuses to allow me to edit anything else. I want to chalk this up as a .NET bug, but since I'm new to WPF datagrids, it's probably just me. • jquery livequery event triggered on EVERYTHING, not just selected element.

  I am attempting to use livequery. I unfortunately am stuck using jquery 1.2.6. This is my code: $(document).ready(function() { $('a.sort').livequery('click', function(event) { alert('hello'); }); }); If I click ANYWHERE in the document, I get the alert 'hello'. What exactly is wrong there? Is it some bug with jQ1.2.6 and livequery 1.1.1? This same question was asked here but the question wasn't clear, and the answer didn't help.

• jquery ui autocomplete not working in ie8 (until page refresh)

  Hello all, I am using jquery ui autocomplete it is working absolutely fine in all browsers except ie8. I have been doing some testing and there seems to be a strange bug. When I click on a link leading to the relevant page there is the following error generated by ie8 when I start typing in the autocomplete box: 'object doesn't support this property or method' this error points to my development jquery(1.4.2) file at line 4955, char 5 which is the following line: return new window.XMLHttpRequest(); However, if I simply reload the page the autocomplete works. I have added a random bit of data to be called with the autocomplete as I read that ie8 caches it ajax get requests but this does not seem to have solved the problem. Could there be a problem with the timing of the loading of all the relevant files including jquery? If so, how would I fix this? Any other clever ideas?! Andy

In short, I am trying to make an asynchronous web service call from my VB.NET application. But my "client_DownloadDataCompleted" callback is NEVER being called when the download is complete.   Battleship! Back in 2003, (when I was 17,) I competed in a Battleship AI coding competition. Even though I lost that tournament, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from it. Now, I would like to resurrect this competition, in the search of the best battleship AI. Here is the framework: Battleship.zip The winner will be awarded +450 reputation! The competition will be held starting on the 17th of November, 2009. No entries or edits later than zero-hour on the 17th will be accepted. (Central Standard Time) Submit your entries early, so you don't miss your opportunity! To keep this OBJECTIVE, please follow the spirit of the competition. Rules of the game: The game is be played on a 10x10 grid. Each competitor will place each of 5 ships (of lengths 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) on their grid. No ships may overlap, but they may be adjacent. The competitors then take turns firing single shots at their opponent. A variation on the game allows firing multiple shots per volley, one for each surviving ship. The opponent will notify the competitor if the shot sinks, hits, or misses. Game play ends when all of the ships of any one player are sunk. Rules of the competition: The spirit of the competition is to find the best Battleship algorithm. Anything that is deemed against the spirit of the competition will be grounds for disqualification. Interfering with an opponent is against the spirit of the competition. Multithreading may be used under the following restrictions: No more than one thread may be running while it is not your turn. (Though, any number of threads may be in a "Suspended" state). No thread may run at a priority other than "Normal". Given the above two restrictions, you will be guaranteed at least 3 dedicated CPU cores during your turn. A limit of 1 second of CPU time per game is allotted to each competitor on the primary thread. Running out of time results in losing the current game. Any unhandled exception will result in losing the current game. Network access and disk access is allowed, but you may find the time restrictions fairly prohibitive. However, a few set-up and tear-down methods have been added to alleviate the time strain. Code should be posted on stack overflow as an answer, or, if too large, linked. Max total size (un-compressed) of an entry is 1 MB. Officially, .Net 2.0 / 3.5 is the only framework requirement. Your entry must implement the IBattleshipOpponent interface. Scoring: Best 51 games out of 101 games is the winner of a match. All competitors will play matched against each other, round-robin style. The best half of the competitors will then play a double-elimination tournament to determine the winner. (Smallest power of two that is greater than or equal to half, actually.) I will be using the TournamentApi framework for the tournament. The results will be posted here. If you submit more than one entry, only your best-scoring entry is eligible for the double-elim. • Should static analysis warnings fail the CI build?

  Our team is investigating various options for static analysis in our project, and have mixed opinions about whether we want our Continuous Integration build to fail because of warnings from static analysis. The argument against failing the build is that there are often exceptions to the rules, and attempting to work around them just to make the build succeed reduces productivity. A better approach would be to generate reports with the build, and regularly dedicate developer time to addressing the reported issues. The counter-argument is that it is easy for the technical debt to build up if the bugs are not addressed immediately. Also, if the build fails when a potential bug is introduced, the amount of time required to fix it is reduced. What are your thoughts?

• UIButton of type UIButtonTypeCustom will not display Title (iPhone)

  Hi I must have overlooked something completely obvious?? but my button displays its image and size correctly, but I simply can't get the Title to show up.   Hi .. I'm trying to create datasource for connection pooling mysql database in Websphere Application Server. I've set the JDBC Provider, I set the Implementation class name : com.mysql.jdbc.jdbc2.optional.MysqlConnectionPoolDataSource my mysql driver 5.1.6. but I got this error while I try to connect the datasource: The test connection operation failed for data source btn_itb_ds on server server1 at node qnode with the following exception: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Unknown command. View JVM logs for further details. I have read this http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=38388 trouble shooting. But they just suggest to upgrade mysql driver version 5.1.X and I have do that. but I've got the same error.

• Anyone had any experience with *.pcap manipulation libs?

  I'm using the SharpPcap + PacketDotNet libraries to process some .pcap files and came across a bug in the way the timestamps are calculated. Take this Timeval property, which is something along these lines: PosixTimeval Timeval { DateTime Date; ulong Seconds; ulong MicroSeconds; } The problem is as follows: Suppose you have a trace open in Wireshark with one of the packets with a timestamp of "0.002". Once you open it within one of your programs, it retrieves the packet and its Timeval is setup such that Seconds = 0 and MicroSeconds = 002 = 2. This is done under the hood, so there is no way to avoid it as far as I can tell. My question is if that problem is common to other libraries (and maybe all of them?) who manipulate the pcap file format, which I think are built around the same collection of c/c++ functions, or if this is a problem only with the ones I'm using.

• Can I turn off context menu scrolling in VS2010?

  When I right-click in the middle of a code editor window in Visual Studio 2010 RTM, a context menu appears. This takes up about a fourth the height of the screen but doesn't show all options. Instead it scrolls up and down when you move the pointer to the top or bottom of the menu. If I click near the top or bottom of the screen, the menu is normal and doesn't scroll. Can I turn this behavior off? It's stupid. You can't even scroll using the mouse wheel. EDIT I reckon this might just be a bug - I've found a few.

• jQuery: Dynamic image handling (waiting for load)

  I'm trying to write a plugin that has a built in function to wait until all images that are on the page to be loaded before it executes itself. $(window).load() only works if it's the initial load of the page, but if someone wants to pull down some HTML through AJAX that contains images, it doesn't work. Is there any good way of doing this AND implementing it so that it can be self-contained in the plug-in? I've tried looping over $('img').complete, and I know that doesn't work (the images never load, and the browser crashes under a "script takes too long to complete" bug). For an example of what I'm trying to do, visit the page I'm looking to house the plugin at: http://www.simplesli.de If you go to the "more uses" section (click it on the nav bar), you'll see that the image slideshow won't load properly. I know the current code doesn't work, but it's just holding place until I figure something out.

• Do WPF ComboBox SelectedIndex and SelectedValue have different behavior on SelectionChanged event?

The problem is when a external method tries to set cbxJobPosition. cbxJobPosition is databinded with a list of objects of type JobPosition: JobPositionID: 1, JobPositionName: Manager JobPositionID: 2, JobPositionName: Employee JobPositionID: 3, JobPositionName: Third party Here's the XAML: <ComboBox Cursor="Hand" DataContext="{Binding}" ItemsSource="{Binding}" FontSize="13" Name="cbxJobPosition" SelectedValuePath="JobPositionID" DisplayMemberPath="JobPositionName" SelectedIndex="0" Width="233" Height="23" SelectionChanged="cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged" /> On UserControl_Loaded method, it reads from database the list of jobs and try to set the specific job position "Third party": //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and passes the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedIndex = 3; //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and but won't pass the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedValue = "3"; As you can notice, when the processing is automatically redirected to cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged, the SelectedValue attribute will have different values for each statement above when you're debugging within cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged event. Does anyone know if this difference is expected, am I missing something or it could be a bug?

• Why does CLLocationManager returns null locations on the iphone SDK 4 beta in the Simulator?

  Hi everyone, I have this piece of code: - (void)locationManager:(CLLocationManager *)manager didUpdateToLocation:(CLLocation *)newLocation fromLocation:(CLLocation *)oldLocation { NSLog(@"Manager did update location!!"); self.currentLocation = newLocation.description; } I have this code inside a class that conforms to the CLLocationManagerDelegate. I tested earlier in sdk 3.0 and works nice (on both simulator and device). I'm testing this class on the SDK 4, in the simulator, but it gives null as a newLocation. I can't even get the NSLog for the first call. I checked other app where I use the location framework and it doesn't work either. I implemented the locationManager:didFailWithError: message also, wich is never called. Can anyone please confirm that the simulator can't do any CLLocationManager capabilities? (a link where the bug is reported as a known issue will be awesome). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

  This code gets 10 posts of all types that are linked to the term_name; global $wp_query; query_posts( array( "taxonomy_name" => "term_name", 'showposts' => 10 ) ); This code gets 10 posts of custom post type "message"; global $wp_query; query_posts( array( 'post_type' => 'message' 'showposts' => 10 ) ); This code however always ignores the post_type requirement but still selects all post types linked to the term_name; global $wp_query; query_posts( array( 'post_type' => 'message' , "taxonomy_name" => "term_name", 'showposts' => 10 ) ); I can't see how both can work individually but together they don't unless it might be a bug - any thoughts?

• Setting the value (selected option) of a dijit.form.Select widget

  I have a dijit.form.Select widget. It's tied to a data store, if that matters. It's filled with several options already. All I want to do is programmatically set its value. I can get its value using myWidget.attr('value') but if I try to do myWidget.attr('value', 5) for example (where 5 is one of the valid values), all it does is reset the widget to select the very first option, no matter what value I give it. This seems to be a bug, and there aren't any tests or documentation which show how to accomplish what I want to. But is there some way, even if it's a dirty hack? I'm using Dojo 1.4.0. Note that dijit.form.Select is the new name for dojox.form.DropDownSelect. edit: I even tried resetting the widget with all new options, but it ignores the option which has selected = true and just selects the first option. There must still be a way though.

• System.Uri can't parse when password field contains a "#"

  The following code throws System.UriFormatException: var uri = new UriBuilder("ftp://user:pass#[email protected]:21/fu/bar.zip"); System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: A port was expected because of there is a colon (':') present but the port could not be parsed. Removing the # symbol from the password field solves the issue. Is a # symbol a valid character to have in the password field? Is there a way to escape this? Is this a known bug in the parsing routine of the Uri class? How does one get around this - assuming you can't change the password? ;-) Thanks, Andrew

• VS 11 Beta Cannot start process because a file name has not been provided

  This is what I'm getting when I build my Test project: With this I'm unable to run my tests since they're not being discovered by VS. See the message "Unexpected error detected. Check the Tests Output Pane for details." at the window bottom. Now if you look at the Tests OUTPUT pane you'll have no clue about what's the problem. This is extremely helpful... :) I know VS 11 is in beta but it used to work... I've already restarted VS but it didn't work after that too. Any ideas about what's going on? Would it be a bug somewhere? Note: the only thing I can think is related with VS 2010 uninstall I did sometime ago. Maybe it uninstalled some necessary bits. Beats me...
