• How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

There are a couple of items on the list that you should definitely keep your eye on. The first item is the support for Silverlight 4  and 5. This should make the Silverlight community happy. • What is a good university for computer science and game development?

  I am starting my computer science degree at a local community college in programming using C++. However, I will be transferring to a 4-year university. Does anyone have any insight on university programs? I know Cal State Fullerton has a degree with a minor in Game Development. however, is that as important as getting a degree from a really great school? If I could shoot for something like Cal Poly would that be better? Or even Stanford or SF State being so close to so many gaming companies up there in the Bay area?

The site was taken over by spammers, and was essientially a ghost town, but I reworked it to bring a technology topics aggregator. Will this kill Java at the end? If you answer both questions with Yes, what are you doing about it? Which language would you choose, and which platform will you use? .NET/Mono? Plain compiled languages like Golang? Ruby? And if you answer No, why do you think Oracle will not harm Java and the community?

• Help with a formula for Google Adwords [closed]

  Hi guys, This question is more about maths and algorythms in Google Adwords but guess it's the most appropriate community in SE to ask this. I am creating a spreadsheet to calculate Adword formulas and I am stuck in how to calculate the Monthly Net Income for each keyword. I have created a formula which calculates it but can't figure out how to limit the Monthly Budget. The formula I've created is this one: Monthly Net Income = ( DailyClicks x ConversionRate x SaleProfit) - ( CPC x DailyClicks ) There is an example of the formula in the file which is a Google Spreadsheet publicly available here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnQMyM9XJ0EidDB6TUF0OTdaZ2dFb2ZGNmhQeE5lb0E&hl=en_GB#gid=2 (you can create your own copy going to File Make a copy...) • Chinese bots in my forum

  I have a small community forum that doesn't really get posts or any real traffic. The only thing that happens on the regular is bots with Chinese IPs signing up gibberish usernames. Most bots don't make it past the captcha but some do. I try to stay on top of this by banning IPs and ranges of IPs but it doesn't really seem to help. The bots never post anything so what are they doing? Should I be worried? Should I keep banning IPs or is it futile?

• Should I encrypt data in database?

  I have a client, for which I'm going to do an Web application about patient care, managing patients, consults, history, calendars, everything about that basically. The problem is that this is sensitive data, patient history and such. The client insists on encrypting the data at the database level, but I think this is going to deteriorate the performance of the web app. ( But maybe I shouldn't be worried about this ) I've read the laws about data protection on health issues ( Portugal ), but isn't very specific about this ( I just questioned them about this, I'm waiting for their response ). I've read the following link, but my question is different, should I encrypt the data in the database, or not. One problem that I foresee in encrypting data, is that I'm going to need a key, this could be the user password, but we all know how user passwords are ( 12345 etc etc ), and generating a key I would have to store it somewhere, this means that the programmer, dba, whatever could have access to it, any thoughts on this? Even adding an random salt to the user password isn't going to solve the problem since I can always access it, and therefore decrypt the data.

  A couple of bits of news. I did a number of updates to the HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser here:http://www.hackingsilverlight.net/HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser.html including things like MEF and IsolatedStorage. As to the community edition of the book, I'm still trying to get some contributors to finish.   I am pleased to announce the release of DotNetNuke 5.4.2. 5.4.2 is a monthly stabilization release which addresses a couple dozen issues with the 5.4 release. • Preparing to release code as open-source

  I have developed a fully functional tool which I would like not only to share with anyone interested but also get support from the community. This tool is cross-platform, written in C++ with Qt, the code is well commented but I still lack any documentation. There are also some small issues and improvements to be made before I can call it a stable, final version. What are the first steps that I have to take to release code as open-source and attracting people interested in contributing? This is my first serious attempt to release open-source code and I really don't know where to start. Should I just push it to Github put together a small wiki and pray for the best?

• How to add SMS text messaging functionality to my website?

  I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there? EDIT: I am realizing that this is more of a "lots of ways to skin this cat" type of question and so I changed it to community wiki.
