  • GRUB having problems with my sda1 UUID

    I was having trouble trying to setup triple boot on my computer... (Take a look at this thread if you think it would help). I ended up by having a GRUB menu that has Ubuntu entries and "Windows" entry, that calls an EasyBCD menu to choose between Windows 7 and XP. Everything would be fine if, only if, GRUB was set up correctly. I can't find why, but it throws me this when I try to open Ubuntu: I've already tried to remove the menu.lst and do a grub-update, and a grub-install too. I tried to create a symlink to /dev/sda1 at /dev/disk/by-uuid/<<uuid that is there>>, just like the other UUIDs that were there... But I couldn't find that symlink at that busybox that opened when it thrown me the error. Any ideas?   • What are good systems for managing PHP/MySQL infrastructure?

    I work in a company which is about to migrate most applications from in-house custom built Java/Tomcat applications to Drupal. Due to company policies, applications and websites need to run on in-house servers. This means that we need infrastructure for Drupal (PHP/MySQL) applications. This must have been solved a million times already. I believe this is what web-hosting companies does every day. Even though we work on a much smaller scale than web-hosting companies, i assume it would make sense to look at the task as if we're going to have an internal small-scale web-hosting company. This means that the guys in IT operations could be "responsible" for "offering" web-hosting, while developers could use these "services". We have three environments; dev(elopment), test and prod(uction). It would make sense that developers could log in to a system and create/edit/delete dev and test sites as they'd like. Production sites should be available through the same system, but only available to IT ops. We need to work with clusters of web servers, meaning that an administration system should be capable of creating/editing/deleting sites across multiple servers. I know there's no "this is it" answer to my question; but what would be a good place to start to get going with this? Apart from the actual hardware, what would be a good administration system for this?

    Can't boot after I did a aptitude full-upgrade and let it update menu.lst (did a diff first and it looked good).   • Apache Server with memcache, varnish and php slow request times

    My issue is that these servers are taking rather long for request about 2 seconds on average just to serve files. When we had just one server doing everything it was noticeably faster even with the same web app (Drupal 6 and Drupal 7). I want to get this number down to a reasonable level and so I need some help getting to the bottom of why the request times are so slow. This can cause the webapp to hang on post or put and generally leads to a bad user experience on my sites. PS: I am more of a server newbie so this has confounded me for quite some time. The domains: collabornation.net nptrainingworks.com (they run off the same two webservers using vhost configs) The Gear: Two Rackspace 4 Gig servers running CentOS 6.2 Final They have a mounted file system (gluster) that is used to keep files the same on both machines. They are behind a rackspace load balancer running round robin. Mysql is run using php-pdo and php-mysql as such mysql is run on another instance running memcache on that machine with phpMyAdmin located there as well.   • Loading the preview function of AUCTeX 11.86 on macports Emacs-app 23.2.1 port.

    I've installed Emacs-app 23.2.1 via MacPorts and I'm trying to install AUCTeX 11.86 so that it will work on this installation. I've run the following configure line for AUCTeX and that seems to work. ./configure --with-emacs=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs --with-lispdir=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/site-lisp/ --with-texmf-dir=/usr/local/texlive/2010basic/texmf-local/ make and make install seem to work, and I've added the following line to my init.el (require 'tex-site) as per the installation instructions. However, when I open a TeX file, the Preview menu does not show up (although the LaTeX menu does.) The following are some of my tests: M-x load-library RET preview-latex RET doesn't seem to do anything. M-x load-library RET preview RET brings up the Preview menu. Is it safe to somehow add the load-library preview to my init.el? Or do I risk mucking up something? I'm new to Emacs and primarily trying to learn it because of the AUCTeX preview features, but I don't feel very safe in this environment yet.

  • Unexpected media key behavior on new Acer Aspire

    I'm having weird issues with the media keys (play/pause, previous, next, etc.) on a new Acer Aspire laptop. This is the first Acer I've owned and also my first Windows 7 computer, so I'm not sure whether the behavior is a result of some hidden Acer process that I haven't rooted out yet, or some Windows 7 option that I'm not aware of, or something else. I'm experiencing two issues that I suspect are related. Both problems are intermittent but happen more often than not. The media player I'm using is Winamp. I'm pretty sure I've had the same problem when using other media players, but when I tried to verify that before posting this, I only had the problems with Winamp. Because the problems are intermittent, I'm not sure if that's significant. 1) When I press the Play/Pause media key, in addition to playing or pausing the media player, it brings up a little menu in the center of the screen that lists my removable drives (CD/DVD, USB drives, etc.). To make the menu go away I have to either click away from it or hit Escape. Selecting a drive on the menu doesn't seem to do anything. 2) When I press the Previous or Next media keys, it skips 2+ tracks instead of just one (the exact number seems to vary). I've poked around all the control panel options that I can find, and looked through all the utilities that came with the computer with no luck. There's nothing that I can find in the (very slim) documentation, either. I have a hunch that the problem is caused by whatever utility manages global hotkeys, but I haven't found any way to configure that. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: It looks like Winamp was the culprit. I did have the problem when using other media players, but when I uninstalled Winamp, the problem went away. I'd like to use Winamp, but I can survive with other players.

  • Firefox url / link to a group of saved bookmarks?

    In Firefox you can easily save a group of tabs together. When (re-)accessing this group, the 'cascading' bookmark menu shows each individual bookmark (and under a line) it says "open all in tabs" I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu. Possible options: A) Record a simple macro w/ any number of "superuser" utilities* ('A' is not the preferred option, since many 'little-macros' are hard to keep track of) b) Use Autohotkey (similar to option 'A' and more flexible once you learn the basics) c) How does Firefox load all those tabs? The info must be stored somewhere (as a type of URL??) Quick Summary: The moment I click on "open all in tabs", I am clicking on something very similar to a hyper-link. How do I find the content (exact code) of that 'hyper-link', and / or "How do I easily launch the tabs?" .. . New EDIT #1: I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu, or cluttering the bookmarks toolbar which I hide anyway :o) .. . New EDIT #2: I tried to keep the question simple and not mentioning Autohotkey programming. The objective is to launch all tabs using a button on an AHK gui. When grawity said, "It's just an ordinary folder containing ordinary bookmarks," he (she) reminds me I can easily find the folder / Now how to launch to urls inside that folder? .. FYI: (Basic-level) AHK works like this: ; Open one folder ButtonWinMerge_Files: Run, C:\Program Files\WinMerge\ Return .. ; Use default web browser for one link ButtonGoogle: Run, http://google.com Return .. .     Hi, What are the best free CMSs or CMS plugins or ERPs or any other free tools available for developing a hospital management system? I want to develop it for a children's hospital run by my father. The hospital is small with two doctors. Currently, everything is done manually on paper. The main entities who will be using the system are: Receptionist, the two doctors, chemist and the medical laboratorist. They will use it majorly for keeping the records of the patient. The patients would not be interacting with the system directly. The system needs to be user friendly and should be easy to learn. I was thinking to develop such a system using a CMS or an ERP or any other free tool. I have used wordpress/drupal in past but never used an ERP. Can you please guide me to make such a system using free, and preferably open source, tools? Update: I think it will be mostly a form driven system. What would be easy and better: creating the forms in drupal or using a php framework like symphony or cakePHP? Thanks, Akshey

  • Apache on CentOS 5.9 VM serves my optimized images corrupted (but my Mac doesn't)

    I'm using a Vagrant VM to mirror the client's environment as closely as I can. As part of our build process we do no optimization of assets early on; that comes as we're ready to take a site live. Needless to say, this issue is beginning to worry me as we need to take the site live very soon. I use ImageOptim to automate optimization of image assets, which runs a whole series of tools (Zopfli, PNGOUT, OptiPNG, AdvPNG, PNGCrush). I always set the optimizations to their maximum setting. After optimization, my PNGs start looking like this: What's weird is, if I serve the same file through my Mac's copy of Apache, not through Vagrant, the image loads fine. In fact, the only time it's ever corrupt like this is when the image is served from the Vagrant VM and its install of Drupal. All optimized JPEGs display only the first ~20% of the image. And PNGs, depending on the image, may show either a portion or the "progressive"-style corruption below. The browser itself makes no difference, the same browser will serve an uncorrupted image from my Mac's Apache instance and a corrupt image from the VM. When I disable all PNG optimizations except PNGCrush, and the removal of the PNG metadata, the image is served corrupted. I'm optimizing JPEG images with JPEGmini. The server is running CentOS 5.9, Apache 2.2.3-85, PHP 5.3.3, and Drupal 7. As best as I can tell the error lies somewhere within the VM, either with Apache or with (perhaps) the network stack. Seems like the tools that optimize the compression of the PNGs and JPEGs are what trigger this error. I've already determined that the .htaccess file isn't interfering with how the images load. What should I try to troubleshoot this?

  • Nvidia GTX 660m crashes games

    I just recently bought a Lenovo y580 with both HD intel graphics and an Nvidia GTX 660m. It works great except for one thing: playing games. Every time I load a game, either with Steam or Games for Windows Live, games will end up crashing. I've already talked with lenovo tech support and they couldn't help other than send my new laptop for repair which would take 7 days. So before I do that I thought I'd ask around. These are the games I've tested and what happens when they load: Civilization V: Game loads fine but once it gets loaded to the game, there's noticeable "tearing" popping up and certain things flash. Within a minute of this, the game crashes. Does the same thing regardless if Vsync is on or off. Total War Shogun2: Game gets to the menu screen. The background of the menu screen shows what is expected - slideshow of in-game environments rendered on high settings (this is expected). However, within 2 seconds of the menu loading up it crashes. Age of Empires 3 (Non-steam): This game is several years old so it should work on this brand new laptop fine. However the results are similar to that of Civilization V. Noticeable "Tearing" and after a few seconds it'll freeze/crash. I've done tests on all these games with both the latest stable Nvidia driver 285 as well as the nightly build 307. In addition, Nvidia control panel is set on using the dedicated graphics card for all programs. So is there anything I can do to fix this or will I have to send it back for a week to tech support?

    Someone please teach me to fish here... I'm just learning Silverlight and have ran into a few situations where the font size actually used is drastically different than I would expect. There's probably something conceptual that I'm missing. Case A In one instance, I have defined a user control that presents a Label to show text. If one clicks on the label, the label (that is in a stack panel, in the user control) is replaced with a TextBox. When used at the top of a page (as in the example below with lblName) the label text is very small (around 8 points). When clicked on, the text box that replaces the label uses the specified fonts size. That same user control, used in different parts of the app, uses the same font for Label and TextBox. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="33" /> <RowDefinition Height="267*" /> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <StackPanel Height="Auto" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Name="stackPanel" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="Auto" Grid.Row="1" /> <my:EditLabel Height="33" HorizontalAlignment="Left" x:Name="lblName" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="Auto" FlexText="{Binding Name, Mode=TwoWay}" FontSize="20" MinHeight="24" /> </Grid> Case B I'm using the LiquidMenu.Menu control to pop up a menu when a button is pressed. The font looks huge compared to the rest of my page (maybe 36 points?).   • [C#, WinForms] Handle that Shift+F10 w(h)as pressed

    I want to use the exclusive key to open context menu that are available in most of the new laptops and keyboards. This key is usually available between right ALT and CTRL key. I am not sure that it is always equivalent to "Shift + F10" ( or is it always equivalent to "Shift+F10" ?). My programs runs on Windows XP and earlier versions. Context menu should appear at mouse cursor position (if it's possible).

  • Custom NSView in NSMenuItem not receiving mouse events

    I have an NSMenu popping out of an NSStatusItem using popUpStatusItemMenu. These NSMenuItems show a bunch of different links, and each one is connected with setAction: to the openLink: method of a target. This arrangement has been working fine for a long time. The user chooses a link from the menu and the openLink: method then deals with it. Unfortunately, I recently decided to experiment with using NSMenuItem's setView: method to provide a nicer/slicker interface. Basically, I just stopped setting the title, created the NSMenuItem, and then used setView: to display a custom view. This works perfectly, the menu items look great and my custom view is displayed. However, when the user chooses a menu item and releases the mouse, the action no longer works (i.e., openLink: isn't called). If I just simply comment out the setView: call, then the actions work again (of course, the menu items are blank, but the action is executed properly). My first question, then, is why setting a view breaks the NSMenuItem's action. No problem, I thought, I'll fix it by detecting the mouseUp event in my custom view and calling my action method from there. I added this method to my custom view: - (void)mouseUp:(NSEvent *)theEvent { NSLog(@"in mouseUp"); } No dice! This method is never called. I can set tracking rects and receive mouseEntered: events, though. I put a few tests in my mouseEntered routine, as follows: if ([[self window] ignoresMouseEvents]) { NSLog(@"ignoring mouse events"); } else { NSLog(@"not ignoring mouse events"); } if ([[self window] canBecomeKeyWindow]) { dNSLog((@"canBecomeKeyWindow")); } else { NSLog(@"not canBecomeKeyWindow"); } if ([[self window] isKeyWindow]) { dNSLog((@"isKeyWindow")); } else { NSLog(@"not isKeyWindow"); } And got the following responses: not ignoring mouse events canBecomeKeyWindow not isKeyWindow Is this the problem? "not isKeyWindow"? Presumably this isn't good because Apple's docs say "If the user clicks a view that isn’t in the key window, by default the window is brought forward and made key, but the mouse event is not dispatched." But there must be a way do detect these events. HOW? Adding: [[self window] makeKeyWindow]; has no effect, despite the fact that canBecomeKeyWindow is YES.

  • Django conditional template inheritance

    I have template that displays object elements with hyperlinks to other parts of my site. I have another function that displays past versions of the same object. In this display, I don't want the hyperlinks. I'm under the assumption that I can't dynamically switch off the hyperlinks, so I've included both versions in the same template. I use an if statement to either display the hyperlinked version or the plain text version. I prefer to keep them in the same template because if I need to change the format of one, it will be easy to apply it to the other right there. The template extends framework.html. Framework has a breadcrumb system and it extends base.html. Base has a simple top menu system. So here's my dilemma. When viewing the standard hyperlink data, I want to see the top menu and the breadcrumbs. But when viewing the past version plain text data, I only want the data, no menu, no breadcrumbs. I'm unsure if this is possible given my current design. I tried having framework inherit the primary template so that I could choose to call either framework (and display the breadcrumbs), or the template itself, thus skipping the breadcrumbs, but I want framework.html available for other templates as well. If framework.html extends a specific template, I lose the ability to display it in other templates. I tried writing an if statement that would display a the top_menu block and the nav_menu block from base.html and framework.html respectively. This would overwrite their blocks and allow me to turn off those elements conditional on the if. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be conditional; if the block elements are in the template at all, surrounded by an if or not, I lose the menus. I thought about using {% include %} to pick up the breadcrumbs and a split out top menu. In that case though, I'll have to include it all the time. No more inheritance. Is this the best option given my requirement?
