• Ruby on Rails controller-view refactoring

  Hello, In my app I am using the ym4r-gm plugin, which allows you to play with the Google Maps API... I put the map "setup" in the controller: @map = GMap.new("div_map") @map.control_init(:large_map => true, :map_type => true) @map.center_zoom_init([47.0, 26.0], 7) ... And only render @map in the view. So my first question is whether I am using the right approach of "diving" this code? And the second question is: I have to models, which are rendering the same map (only the resources are different). Where should I put my refactored method that renders the map? In the application controller, maybe? Thanks in advance, I hope you will understand me!

• JQuery plugin: catch events for clicking/tabbing into and out of an input box

  I'm creating a Javascript JQuery Timepicker control plugin (which I hope to open source soon) and I would like some advice on how to best register the events in the cleanest way. The control will attach to an <input> box and provide a graphical way to enter times of day ( 14:25, 2:45 AM, etc...). It does this by adding a <div> after the input box. What I want is to bind an openControl() function that fires when the input is clicked or tabbed to, and a closeControl() function that fires when the input box is tabbed away from or deselected but not if the control itself is clicked. That is, I don't want to close the control if you're clicking inside of the control's <input> or the <div>. Focus/Blur wasn't working well because the blur event fires if you click on the control. Should I be using those events but filtering out if they are inside the control's div? • JMeter CSV Data Set is corrupting Japanese strings stored as proper UTF-8, I get Question Marks instead

  I read in search terms from a simple text file to send to a search engine. It works fine in English, but gives me ???? for any Japanese text. Text with mixed English and Japanese does show the English text, so I know it's reading it. What I'm seeing: Input text: Snow Leopard ??????????????? Turns into: Snow Leopard ??????????????? This is in my POST field of an HTTP. If I set JMeter to encode the data, it just puts in the percent sequence for question marks. Interesting note: In the example above there are 15 Japanese characters, and then 15 question marks, so at some point it's being seen as full characters and not just bytes. About the Data: The CSV file is very simple in structure. There's only one field / one column, which I name TERM, and later use as ${TERM} I don't really need full CSV because it's only one string per line. There's no commas or quotes. When I run the Unix "file" command on the file, it says UTF-8 text. I've also verified it in command line and graphical mode on two machines. JMeter CSV Dataset Config: Filename: japanese-searches.csv File encoding: UTF-8 (also tried without) Variable names: TERM Delimiter: , Allow Quoted Data: False (I also tried True, different, but still wrong) Recycle at EOF: True Stop at EOF: False Staring mode: All threads A few things I've tried: Tried Allow quoted Data. It changed to other strange characters. -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 Tried encoding the POST, but it just turned into a bunch of %nn for question marks And I'm not sure how "debug" just after the each line of the CSV is read in. I think it's corrupted right away, but I'm not sure. If it's only mangled when I reference it, then instead of ${TERM} perhaps there's some other "to bytes" function call. I'll start checking into that. I haven't done anything with the JMeter functions yet.

  Hi to all, I'm new to the Ruby world, and there is something unclear to me in defining associations between models. The question is: where is the association saved? For example, if i create a Customer model by executing: generate model Customer name:string age:integer and then i create an Order model generate model Order description:text quantity:integer and then i set the association in the following way: class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :orders end class Order < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :customer end I think here is missing something, for example the foreign key between the two entities. How does it handle the associations created with the keywords "has_many" and "belongs_to" ? Thanks

  I'm using rails 3.0 and MySql 5.1 I have these three models: Question, Tag and QuestionTag. Tag has a column called name. Question has many Tags through QuestionTags and vice versa. Suppose I have n tag names. How do I find only the questions that have all n tags, identified by tag name. And how do I do it in a single query. (If you can convince me that doing it in more than one query is optimal, I'll be open to that) A pure rails 3 solution would be preferred, but I am not adverse to a pure SQL solution either.

• XNA .FBX Vertex Color Missing

  When I vertex paint and export my models from Blender (or Maya) for use in my XNA 4.0 project, I somehow lose the vertex color channel for the model. I use no custom model object or content pipelines and my own shader throws me the error: The current vertex declaration does not include all the elements required by the current vertex shader. Color0 is missing. I tryed to reopen the model in other modeling tools and the vertex colors are there. What could cause the vertex color channel to not get loaded in XNA 4.0? As far as I know this is about metaprogramming and aspect-oriented programming. How do I get acquainted with modern tools available quickly so that I don't invent one more bicycle developing my own?

• What is the best way to have a dynamic dropdownlist in PHP and POST selected value

  Hi, I am writing the following in PHP: i would like to have 2 dropdownlists, where the second one is populated from a mySQL dB according to the choice made on the first dropdown list. Then I would like to use the values of the selected values of the dropdownlist to call another PHP page in which I will generate a db query.   Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. • Rails advanced queries with join and sum calculation

  I have two models: companies and expenses. Companies have many expenses and expenses belong to companies. My expense model has an 'amount' column. I was wondering if there is a way to perform a find based on a date range and the amount column of the expenses. Something like top 3 companies by total expense amounts over a 7 day period. I've tried for the better part of the day to get this to work, I've attempted joins, chaining named scopes, raw sql, etc. and I'm not having any luck. Thanks for the help.

I am looking to see if there are databases out there for: 1) Vehicle makes and models -- I recall something being out there in the $500/yr range 2) Vehicle Part Numbers - A database of car part numbers that is maintained and updated for a yearly subscription. • Django 1.5 custom User model error. "Manager isn't available; User has been swapped"

  I extend the django user model as described in the dev doc. I wan't to keep most of the original User model features so I extend the AbstractUser class. I've defined in settings.py: AUTH_USER_MODEL = 'myapp.CustomUser' My user class: class CustomUser(AbstractUser): custom_field = models.ForeignKey('OtherModel') objects = UserManager() Everything seems to work fine but when I try to make it managed by the admin site: admin.site.register(CustomUser, UserAdmin) I get this error on the admin CustomUser creation page (after validation of the password confirmation form): AttributeError: Manager isn't available; User has been swapped for 'myapp.CustomUser' The point is that I need this model managed by the admin site in order to have the same creation process as with the original User model (two step process with password validation). • R: including model specifications in xtable(anova(...))

  Hello R comrades: I have a bunch of loglinear models, which, for our purposes will just be glm() objects called mx, my, mz. I want to get a nicely-formatted xtable of the analysis of deviance, so naturally I would want to perform xtable(anova(mx, my, mz, test = "Chisq")). The vanilla output of xtable, however, doesn't include the model specifications. I'd like to include those for all the ANOVA tests I'm running, so if there is not a param I'm missing that does this I'll probably just have to hack up my own solution. But looking over the help page, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to include the model specifications. Any thoughts? Alternatives? If it helps this was done in 2.9.1 with xtable 1.5-5.

  I have a three models: listing, category, and site. There is a many to many relationship between listing and site and there is a many to many relationship between listing and category. A listing thus belongs to one or more sites and one or more categories (a listing can appear on multiple sites and multiple categories). Given a site id and a category id, I want a set of all the listings. I understand how to get the listings from a site id (listings = site.listings) and how to get the listings from a category id (listings = category.listings), but how do I get the triple join of the set of listings from both a site id and category id? The sql would look something like (sit_id and cat_id are input): select l.name from listings l, categories_listings cl, listings_sites, ls where cl.category_id = cat_id and ls.site_id = sit_id and cl.listing_id = l.id and ls.listing_id = l.id Thanks in advance

  Hay all, I've been reading up on middleware and how to use it with a context object. I want to write a simple middleware class which i can use on my own applications, it will essentially be a cut down version of the django one. The problem i seem to have is that if i have INSTALLED_APPS = ('django.contrib.my_auth') in the settings file, all is well. I've also added MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES = ('django.contrib.my_auth.middleware.MyAuthMiddleware') in it and everything is fine. My question is, how would i make my middleware automatically generate tables from a models.py module, much like how the django auth does when i run manage.py syncdb? thanks

• Passing HttpFileCollectionBase to the Business Layer - Bad?

  hopefully there's an easy solution to this one. I have my MVC2 project which allows uploads of files on certain forms. I'm trying to keep my controllers lean, and handle the processing within the business layer of this sort of thing. That said, HttpFileCollectionBase is obviously in the System.Web assembly. Ideally I want to call to something like: UserService.SaveEvidenceFiles(MyUser user, HttpFileCollectionBase files); or something similar and have my business layer handle the logic of how and where these things are saved. But, it feels a little icky to have my models layer with a reference to System.Web in terms of separation of concerns etc. So, we have (that I'm aware of) a few options: the web project handling this, and my controllers getting fatter mapping the HttpFileCollectionBase to something my business layer likes passing the collection through, and accepting that I reference System.Web from my business project Would love some feedback here on best practice approaches to this sort of thing - even if not specifically within the context of the above.

  Was about to finally submit an app when I realized that the youtube videos I'm playing play from the iPhone, but not the iPad. • Loading and managing reference data in Rails

  Most of the apps I've worked on have had some kind of reference data stored in the database, for example categories, zipcodes, area codes etc... this is information that's going to change very infrequently. Most of the time you want to load some kind of display name, and that's it. Currently this isn't causing me too many headaches, it's easy to :include the models I need when doing my queries, but going forward it causes a lot of query noise. Ideally I'd like to load the reference data when the app starts and when referencing it in queries it'll load from the cache instead of going to the database. What's the best way to manage this?

But only the Animals table has records, Dogs and "Humen" do not for some reason. Is there some steps missing?
