• How do I switch java versions to an earlier version in Fedora 17?

  I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... • Multiple PHP SAPI configuration

  I'm trying to build PHP for use as an apache shared module --with-apxs2 but also with the 'php-cgi' binary (fastcgi) on Mac OSX 10.6. I'm using this ./configure : /configure --prefix=/usr/local/PHP \ --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \ --disable-ipv6 \ --enable-cgi \ --with-curl \ --with-mysqli=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config \ --with-openssl=/usr \ --enable-ftp \ --enable-shared \ --enable-soap \ --enable-sockets \ --enable-zip \ --with-zlib-dir It builds the apache php5.so module just fine, but in /usr/local/PHP/bin, there is no php-cgi file. If I build it without the --with-apxs2 option (and indeed, I don't even need the --enable-cgi option) the php-cgi file gets built with no problems. • fatal error 'stdio.h' Python 2.7 on Mc OS X 10.7.5 [closed]

  I have this weird issue on my Mac OS X 10.7.5 /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/include/python2.7/Python.h:33:10: fatal error: 'stdio.h' file not found What caused the above error? This error has been bugging me and i can't install mysql-python as i'm stuck with this step. I'm using Python 2.7.3. Things like Google App Engine ( python ), python script, tornado generally works on my mac. But not mysql-python. I've install MySQL using the dmg image and have copied the mysql folder to /usr/local/ How do i fix this? ======UPDATE====== I've ran the command, and tried to install mysql-python by running sudo python setup.py install. • Refresh file access time under Linux / Discard disk read cache

  I am making use of the access time to analyse some build process, but it is not working the way I want: the access time is updated the first time I read the file, then it stays the same for a long while, or until the next reboot. For instance: $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 10:03 some_file $ grep abcdef some_file $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 11:24 some_file # The access time is updated # waiting a few minutes... $ grep abcdef some_file $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 11:24 some_file # The access time has not been updated :( I suppose that the file is buffered by Linux in the free memory, the only this copy is accessed the subsequent times for speed reasons. A solution would be to discard the buffers in memory. After searching some forums, I found: sync echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches But it is not working, it seems that it only sync up the write buffers, not the read ones. May be it is due to some custom kernel configuration on my distro (fedora 9)? Or I am missing something here? Is there a way to achieve this access time refresh? Note also that I do not want to simulate some writes on my entire file tree. Because I am using some makefile based build system, this will cause the entire project to be build again.

  I'm trying to install Red5 on a vps running CentOS 5.7 in MediaTemple using this how-to (dv):Install Red5 Media Server but on step 7 I get this error: BUILD FAILED /usr/local/red5/build.xml:217: The following error occurred while executing this line: /usr/local/red5/build.xml:238: Error running /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64/bin/javac compiler Any idea how to fix it? Already Google and several users have had this same issue but none posted the solution or they never solved. • Building a Web proxy to get around same-origin restrictions for collaborative Webapp based on a MEAN stack

  Can anyone point to books, articles, blogs, or even applications - open-source or proprietary - that detail building a Web proxy? This specific proxy will exist to get around the same-origin restrictions that prevent, for instance, loading a given Website into an <iframe> in a Webapp. This Webapp is a collaborative application in which a group of users log in to the app's Website and can then load different Websites into this app's <iframe> and do various collaborative things (e.g., several users simultaneously browsing a Website, in synch). The Webapp itself is built on a MEAN stack (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, and Node.js). The purpose of this proxy is not to do anonymous browsing or to bypass censorship. Information on how to build such a vehicle seems not to be readily available from my research. I've come across Glype but am not sure whether this is a feasible solution. I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so if a product is available for purchase, great. Else, we'd need to build one. The one that seems to be close is http://www.corsproxy.com. In effect, we'd like to re-create this since it evidently does what's needed. I don't care what server-side technology is used. Our app is MEAN-based, if that has any bearing. Also, the proxy has to obviously honor basic security considerations (user cookies, etc.) and eventually be scalable. So, anyone know of any sources that would detail how to build one of these? Is it even worth building if something already exists? If so, what would be a good candidate? Any other issues that should be considered with this proxy/application? Thanks a lot!

• gcc built by crosstool-ng gives undefined reference

  I've successfully built a toolchain using crosstool-ng with the default configuration named x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu. The documentation says: Using the toolchain is as simple as adding the toolchain's bin directory in your PATH, such as: export PATH="${PATH}:/your/toolchain/path/bin" and then using the target tuple to tell the build systems to use your toolchain: ./configure --target=your-target-tuple or make CC=your-target-tuple-gcc or make CROSS_COMPILE=your-target-tuple- and so on... I followed the instructions and attempted to build GNU tar (tar-1.25.tar.bz2) with the toolchain. The commands ./configure --target=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu and make CROSS_COMPILE=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu- do not work (the build will succeed, but it uses the host system's gcc). The command make CC=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc works, but in the very last step when it tries to link, it returns errors like this: compare.o: In function `openat': /dev/shm/x-tools/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/sys-root/usr/include/bits/fcntl2.h:134: undefined reference to `__openat_2' What could be the problem? Was the toolchain not properly setup? Perhaps x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc is using the header files from the host system but could not find the libraries in the target's sys-root?

• Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (on [Samsung] Chromebook)

  I have dual booted Ubuntu Linux 12.04.1 LTS on my Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook, and am trying to run/install Oracle VirtualBox (from the generic .run file downloaded from their website). However, every time I try to run it (as root from the command line), it gives me the following error occurs: Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel. The current kernel version is 3.4.0 Problems were found which would prevent VirtualBox from installing. I have tried the version from the Software Center, as well as the command line installation, both of which gave me errors based on my linux-headers/linux-kernel/linux-[kernel]-image. Here's an error I keep getting (on the command line): First Installation: checking all kernels... • Setting up xpra for client use in OS X

  I've been trying to get xpra to run on OS X for the last few days to connect to my Ubuntu server. Note that there's a GUI for it called shifter, but that (at least on OS X) is still far too buggy. For those who don't know what xpra is, if you know what screen is, it's like screen for GUI X Windows apps tunneled over ssh. You can render a remote X app locally so it's faster than sending a series of compresses screen shots (like VNC), but with xpra you can disconnect and reconnect on different computers. To get the basic functionality you can just type "ssh -X server.location" and any GUI app you open from the command line will open locally. I've been able to get xpra to build by doing the following: Download pari-all-0.0.6.tar.gz from the xpra site listed under upstream and untar it. Issue the following Mac Ports command (Dependencies thanks to RogBlog): sudo port install python25 python26 py26-pyrex py26-gtk xorg-libXtst py25-gobject py25-gtk py25-nose py26-nose xorg-libXdamage xorg-libXcomposite xorg-libXtst xorg-libXfixes In the upstream list of v0.0.06 patches (NOT 0.0.8pre!) on the xpra site listed above, download mswindows-conditional-pyrex.patch. Open the patch with your favorite text editor and change the single occurrence of "win" in it to "darwin". Apply the patch to setup.py. Run do-build in the command line. Now where I'm stumped: how do I run xpra? The build produces a sub directory called install/bin in which xpra is located, but when I try to run it I get the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "./xpra", line 4, in import xpra.scripts.main ImportError: No module named xpra.scripts.main There is a file called main.py under xpra/scripts, but I don't know any python and I'm not sure if this is what it's looking for, and what to do with it even if it is. • Building vs buying a server for an academic lab [closed]

  I'm looking for advice on the classic build vs buy question. We need a new linux server to run Matlab computation on in our lab (academic). Matlab parallel computing toolbox licence allows up to 12 local workers so we are aiming at a 12 core server with 4GB memory per core (total of 48gb). The system will have an SSD for the OS and a raid-5 (4x2tb) for data. I looked around and found a (relatively) cheap vendor, Silicon Mechanics, that offers a system to our liking (specs below) for $6732. However, buying the components from newegg cost only $4464! The difference is $2268 which is 50% of the base cost. If buying from a company can be thought of as a sort of insurance, basically my premiums are of 50% of the base cost which to me sounds like a lot. Of course any downtime is bad, but the work is not "mission critical", i.e. if it takes a few days to fix it when it breaks its no the end of the world. If it takes weeks to months then its a problem. If it breaks 2-3 times in 3 years, not too bad. If it breaks every month not good. In term of build experience, I set up a linux cluster in grad school (from existing computers) and I build my home pcs but I never built a server before. • Performance tweaks and upgrades for VMWare Server 2

  Our software department has a server running VMWare Server 2. We typically have 8-10 VMs running as test environments (Win XP and Server 08) for various versions of our software, and one VM that is used as a build server (Win XP). The host is running Server 2003 R2. It has 32GB RAM, 8 core Xeon 3.16GHz CPU, one disk for host OS and two raid disks for VMs. The majority of the time, this setup behaves very well and there are no complaints. Other times, the VMs can be very laggy. This is sometimes, but not always, correlated to heavy load on the build server. I'm a software developer, not an IT pro, but it seems to me that this machine should be beefy enough to handle this many VMs. Is this occasional performance hit likely just because we're hitting the limits of the hardware, or should I be looking for another culprit? From what I've read, I'm guessing if there's a bottleneck, it's probably disk I/O with all these VMs running off two disks (especially the build server). Would spreading the VMs over more disks, and/or switching to SSDs give us a significant performance boost? Other things I've read may increase performance: single virtual processor per VM removing/disabling unused virtual hardware preallocated disk space not using snapshots setting a reserved memory limit on the host and disabling VM memory swapping Can anyone confirm or deny if any of these improve performance? What other good tweaks have I missed?

• RAID 10 or RAID 5 for multiple VMs - what is the best choice?

  I have just ordered a new rig for my business. We do a lot of software development for Microsoft SharePoint and need the rig to run several virtual machines for development and test purposes. We will be using the free VMware ESXi for virtualization. For a start, we plan to build and start the following VMs - all with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64: Active Directory server MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Automated Build Server SharePoint 2010 Server for hosting our public Web site and our internal Intranet for a few people. The load on this server is going to be quite insignificant. 2xSharePoint 2007 development server 2xSharePoint 2010 development server Beyond that we will need to build several SharePoint farms for testing purposes. These VMs will only be started when needed. The specs of the new rig is: Dell R610 rack server 2xIntel XEON E5620 48GB RAM 6x146GB SAS drives Dell H700 RAID controller We believe the new server is going to make our VMs perform a lot better than our existing setup (2xIntel XEON, 16GB RAM, 2x500 GB SATA in RAID 1). But we are not sure about the RAID level for the new rig. Should we go for having the the 6x146GB SAS drives in a RAID 10 configuration or a RAID 5 configuration? RAID 10 seems to offer better write performance and lower risk of a RAID failure. But it comes at a cost of less drive space. Do we need RAID 10 or would RAID 5 also be a good choice for us?

• Problem uninstalling and installing Java on new pc running Windows 7 64 bit os

  I have a new Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 64 bit os. I am attending online classes which require IE 8 and Java version 6 build 20. The pc came with IE 8 32 bit and Java 6 build 21 already installed. I tried to uninstall Java using add and remove programs but after about 45 minutes of "Preparing to remove application" I got an error refering to a missing dll file and the uninstall failed. I used a third party program to remove Java and downloaded Java 6 build 20. My problem is when I try to install it I get the box telling me "Installing program ... this may take a few minutes" however after 30 to 45 minutes nothing has happend and there is no indication in the progress bar that anything is happening then all of a sudden the program bar is full and the program is supposedly installed. When I try to run it however it doesn't work. Someone help please! I can't get access to my classwork with out this! Thanks

• Google Drive terminates without error on startup

  I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line. I even search the whole project for the text <extension>war</ and mysteriously, there is no text like this in my project.   Following a MSDN web page, I am trying to manually run mstest within my tfsbuild.proj and put the results into the pass/fail logic so the build will fail if this particular test fails. It's kind of like running a FxCop or something else from CMD and capturing a "0" or "1" and force-fail the build. MSTest /testcontainer:test.dll /publish:http://ourtfsmachine:8080 /teamproject:ProjectName /publishbuild:BuildNumber01 /platform:AnyCpu /flavor:Release I could understand running this inside an Exec task, butI don't know what the BuildNumber is, for example. Help?

The reason is there is no compatibleFrameworks attribute being set in the application manifest which we generate every build.   I have two Android projects, a 'library project' containing a custom layout, and an 'application project' containing an application which uses the layout. Everything seems to build and execute fine, except that the visual layout editor throws a ClassNotFoundException (which I assume is a bug in the plug-in), but when I try to start to make use of the attributes I defined for the custom layout in the xml, I can no longer build. The layout_horizontalSpacing attribute (and layout_verticalSpacing) is a custom attribute used in the PredicateLayout.LayoutParam class to specify the distance to the next widget. So far I've tried the standard eclipse ways by specifying project references and build path project dependencies. I was also told to try the tag in the application manifest, which did not help. So, what do I need to do for the references in the xml-file to work?
