  • How to use a servlet to repsond to a request for an object

    I'm sure this is easy, but I don't work with website development very often and I'm lost on this one. I have a web application that needs to support multiple clients with different settings, icons and other content. The contents of these files are in separate directories for each client. What I would like to do is respond to a request sent to a jsp/java servlet. The servlet will look up the proper folder location in a database (I have the database stuff working) and send the actual object to the requesting page whether it is xml, graphic or video. How do I do that? What methods should I be using. Help I'm lost! :(

  • How can I define an empty array in a Perl construtor?

    I am just beginner with Perl, so if it sounds stupid - sorry for that :) My problem is - I am trying to write a class, which has an empty array, defined in constructor of a class. So I am doing this like this: package MyClass; use strict; sub new { my ($C) = @_; my $self = { items => () }; bless $self, ref $C || $C; } sub get { return $_[0]->{items}; } 1; Later I am testing my class with simple script: use strict; use Data::Dumper; use MyClass; my $o = MyClass->new(); my @items = $o->get(); print "length = ", scalar(@items), "\n", Dumper(@items); And while running the script I get following: $ perl my_test.pl length = 1 $VAR1 = undef; Why am I doing wrong what causes that I get my items array filled with undef? Maybe someone could show me example how the class would need to be defined so I would not get any default values in my array?

  • embed tag for flash and w3c

    when validating a site using w3c validator it tells me the tag is not valid markup. So i take it out and it works on safari/chrome but not firefox(3.5.x) but validates fine. Is there something in the tag i must add in order for firefox to display flash.

    I'm well aware that similair topics have been brought up before e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1639043/entity-framework-4-vs-nhibernate But instead of arguments like: NHibernate have been around longer and is more mature EF4 is drag n drop and not enterprisy EF4 and LinqToSql are ... I would like to see a more detailed list of features that you consider missing from EF4. Personally, I think the lack of enum support is the biggest drawback of EF4.

    I’ve just started developing for iPhone and am trying to get my head around memory management. I made a small program that shows a map and an annotation on the map. For the annotation I made a simple class that implements the MKAnnotation protocol. To create and add the annotation I wrote this: [self.myMapView addAnnotation:[[MyAnnotation alloc] init]]; It worked fine until I tried to release the object. Nothing to release. This is what I would have done in C#, I guess it doesn’t work without garbage collection? So is this the only way to do it?   • Looking for a free tool to visualize object relationships for C#

    Here is my ideal solution: a free tool that reads a .csporj or .sln and generates a pretty picture that shows all the objects and how they are related. By relationships, I don't mean inheritance but rather dependency. For example, if we have a Car object and Car has a member variable Wheel, I would like that Car depends on Wheel to be visualized in the graph. I know visual studio can do inheritance graphs, but that is only half of what I am looking for. Is what I am looking for possible? Are there any tools that do something similar?     So I have 3 classes. Abstract class A Class B extends class A independent Class C In class D that contains the main method, I create a list of instances of class B List<B> b = methodCall(); // the method returns a list of instances of class B Now in class C I have one method that is common to both A and B, and hence I don't want to duplicate it. I want to have one method that takes as input an instance of class A, as follows: public void someMethod(List<A> a) However, when I do: C c = new C(); c.someMethod(b); I get an error that some-method is not applicable for the argument List<B>, instead it's expecting to get List<A>. Is there a good way to fix this problem? Many thanks!

    I'm wondering that is it possible to convert the executed query result to a list of models. I'm using Ruby with ActiveRecord and need to execute custom SQL query to join two or many tables. The code looks like below: connection = ActiveRecord::Base.connection sql = "select T1.f1, T2.f2 from T1 left join T2 on T1.id = T2.id" @result = connection.execute(sql) In Ruby code, I defined a models to manage the executed SQL result: class Model property :f1, :f2 end Is there any way to convert @result to list of Model object? so I can deal with each item in the list as following @result.each do |item| puts item.f1 puts item.f2 end

    Hello All, Could someone please advise in the context of a ASP.Net application is a shared/static function common to all users? If for example you have a function Public shared function GetStockByID(StockID as Guid) as Stock Is that function common to all current users of your application? Or is the shared function only specific to the current user and shared in the context of ONLY that current user? So more specifically my question is this, besides database concurrency issues such as table locking do I need to concern myself with threading issues in shared functions in an ASP.Net application? In my head; let’s say my application namespace is MyTestApplicationNamespace. Everytime a new user connects to my site a new instance of the MyTestApplicationNamespace is created and therefore all shared functions are common to that instance and user but NOT common across multiple users. Is this correct?

    I have a struct like this typedef struct _somestruct { int a; int b; }SOMESTRUCT,*LPSOMESTRUCT; I am creating an object for the struct and trying to print it's address like this int main() { LPSOMESTRUCT val = (LPSOMESTRUCT)malloc(sizeof(SOMESTRUCT)); printf("0%x\n", val); return 0; } ..and I get this warning warning C4313: 'printf' : '%x' in format string conflicts with argument 1 of type 'LPSOMESTRUCT' So, I tried to cast the address to int like this printf("0%x\n", static_cast<int>(val)); But I get this error: error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'LPSOMESTRUCT' to 'int' What am I missing here? How to avoid this warning? Thanks.

  • Initial capacity of collection types, i.e. Dictionary, List

    Certain collection types in .Net have an optional "Initial Capacity" constructor param. i.e. Dictionary<string, string> something = new Dictionary<string,string>(20); List<string> anything = new List<string>(50); I can't seem to find what the default initial capacity is for these objects on MSDN. If I know I will only be storing 12 or so items in a dictionary, doesn't it make sense to set the initial capacity to something like 20? My reasoning is, assuming the capacity grows like it does for a StringBuiler, which doubles each time the capacity is hit, and each re-allocation is costly, why not pre-set the size to something you know will hold your data, with some extra room just in case? If the initial capacity is 100, and I know I will only need a dozen or so, it seems as though the rest of that allocated RAM is allocated for nothing. Please spare me the "premature optimization" speil for the O(n^n)th time. I know it won't make my apps any faster or save any meaningful amount of memory, this is mostly out of curiosity.

    Is there a way (in jquery or javascript) to loop through each object and it's children and gandchildren and so on. if so... can i also read their name? example foo :{ bar:'', child:{ grand:{ greatgrand: { //and so on } } } } so the loop should do something like this... loop start if(nameof == 'child'){ //do something } if(nameof == 'bar'){ //do something } if(nameof =='grand'){ //do something } loop end I know this is stupid code but i tried to make it understandable :) btw this is for a jquery UI, as i am clueless how to go on about this. thanks

    I understand that MVC & MVP are design patterns that are commonly used for web development, as well as ASP.NET WebForms (more of an anti-pattern, really!). What other patterns are used in web application development? I'm not necessarily saying I want to learn/use new patterns just to be different - I do believe there's a lot of value in taking the conventional route - but I think it's good to know what else is out there to be able to properly understand what I'm currently working with.   • C#: why have all static methods/variables in a non-static class?

    I have come across a class which is non-static, but all the methods and variables are static. Eg: public class Class1 { private static string String1 = "one"; private static string String2 = "two"; public static void PrintStrings(string str1, string str2) { ... All the variables are static across all instances, so there is no point having separate instances of the class. Is there any reason to create a class such as this?

    I have the concept of valid/ordered transitions. So for example, it's not possible to move to status In progress from status Complete. Current and Next in table StatusTransition are FK (StatusType.Id).   • How to profile object creation in Java?

    The system I work with is creating a whole lot of objects and garbage collecting them all the time which results in a very steeply jagged graph of heap consumption. I would like to know which objects are being generated to tune the code, but I can't figure out a way to dump the heap at the moment the garbage collection starts. When I tried to initiate dumpHeap via JConsole manually at random times, I always got results after GC finished its run, and didn't get any useful data. Any notes on how to track down excessive temporary object creation are welcome.

  • Partial class or "chained inheritance"

    Hi From my understanding partial classes are a bit frowned upon by professional developers, but I've come over a bit of an issue; I have made an implementation of the RichTextBox control that uses user32.dll calls for faster editing of large texts. That results in quite a bit of code. Then I added spellchecking capabilities to the control, this was made in another class inheriting RichTextBox control as well. That also makes up a bit of code. These two functionalities are quite separate but I would like them to be merged so that I can drop one control on my form that has both fast editing capabilities and spellchecking built in. I feel that simply adding the code form one class to the other would result in a too large code file, especially since there are two very distinct areas of functionality, so I seem to need another approach. Now to my question; To merge these two classes should I make the spellchecking RichTextBox inherit from the fast edit one, that in turn inherits RichTextBox? Or should I make the two classes partials of a single class and thus making them more “equal” so to speak? This is more of a question of OO principles and exercise on my part than me trying to reinvent the wheel, I know there are plenty of good text editing controls out there. But this is just a hobby for me and I just want to know how this kind of solution would be managed by a professional. Thanks!
