  • How are thumbnails stored on Mac OS X?

    - by Alberto Moriconi
I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

  • Mac OS X Snow Leopard hangs after login

    - by sleepyjames
After restoring from backup following filesystem corruption my user account hangs after login (After entering my password the login window disappears and all I get is the background and a mouse pointer, no spinning wheel of death etc ..) I can login as a different user and then logout and login as my main account (sometimes!) but this is not consistant. I can login with safemode ok and have tried deleting /System/Caches, ~/Library/Caches and removing all my ~/Library/Preferences which worked once but not again. Does anyone have an any idea which logs I can look in, if any, to see whats happening after login or any other tips? I'm using 10.6.2. Cheers.

  • A Guide to Windows Hacking for Mac Users?

    - by Carlton Gibson
I am a long-time Mac user looking to gain a decent understanding of Windows. I'm not really interested in the history except as it is still relevant to Windows 7. I'm competent with the Mac and UNIX/Linux environment. I'm live in C, Objective-C, Bash, Python, JavaScript, AppleScript and PHP. As such I want something that is introductory but not aimed at beginners. Can anyone recommend a decent book (or other resource) to get me started? TIA

  • Creating a custom NAS compatible with the Mac Time machine and for media streaming

    - by Bobby Alexander
I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible? Can someone provide resources on how I can assemble such a machine and setup the required software on it? Much appreciated.

  • View rotated log files Mac OS X Server (*.?.gz)

Trying to look at some of our older log files and find they're cryptic "Unix Executable Files". This particular server I'm working with is an older Mac OS X Server (10.4 - Tiger). -rw-r----- 1 root admin 36 1 Jun 15:48 wtmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root admin 578 27 May 17:40 wtmp.0.gz -rw-r----- 1 root admin 89 26 Apr 13:57 wtmp.1.gz -rw-r----- 1 root admin 78 29 Mar 16:43 wtmp.2.gz -rw-r----- 1 root admin 69 15 Feb 17:21 wtmp.3.gz -rw-r----- 1 root admin 137 16 Jan 13:09 wtmp.4.gz i'm using zless to try and view the contents of the .gz files. and what i see is unreadable: ... <DF>^R<AF>ttyp1^@^@^@joe54^@^@^@^@^@108.184.63.22^@^@^@^@K<DF>"<B8>ttyp1^@^@^@^@^@ ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@K<DF>%<A1>console^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@ ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@K<E0>1 ~^@^@^@^@^@^@^@shutdown^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@ ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@K<E0>1^L~^@^@^@^@^@^@^@reboot^@^@^@^@^@^@ ... same goes for system.log.0.gz, etc... anything that's been rolled in compressed .gz files. What am i missing?

  • Text editor for Mac that will open any file

    - by Dinah
In Windows, every text editor I encountered allowed me to drag and drop any file type into it and it opened. Apparently, Mac app developers have a different philosophy because I can't find a simple free text editor for OS X that will do this. TextWrangler came highly recommended but it can't accomplish this simple feat. Can anyone suggest one? Edit apparently on at least some editors, there is a distinction between drag/drop in the document list area vs. the typing area. In addition to the accepted answer, this is one thing to be aware of. I still don't know why it doesn't work in TextEdit, but this is true for TextWrangler and Smultron.

  • Mac OSX Programming for long time Linux geek

    - by DarenW
I've written software on Linux since 1995 but must get up to speed with app development on the Mac. I have no experience on that platform. Obviously I should get my hands on some appropriate hardware. What are good books, tutorial websites, and other resources for experienced devs getting started on Mac? Not just APIs and app internals, but also including how does one install an app, debug it, etc?

  • Single line diff

    - by Ollie Saunders
Is there a diff tool I can run from the command line or maybe just an online webpage that will compare single lines? GitHub diffs do this but I'm don't want to publish things to GitHub just to read the diffs! This is the sort of thing I'm wanting to diff: a:2:{i:0;O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"foo";s:4:"next";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:8;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"bar";s:4:"next";N;s:4:"prev";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";N;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:15;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"zim";s:4:"next";r:8;s:4:"prev";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";N;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:22;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"foo";s:4:"next";r:15;s:4:"prev";r:8;s:6:"ofList";O:12:"FuLinkedList":1:{s:5:"items";a:4:{i:0;r:2;i:1;r:8;i:2;r:22;i:3;r:15;}}}s:6:"ofList";r:30;}s:6:"ofList";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:5:"items";a:2:{i:0;r:2;i:1;r:8;}}}s:4:"prev";N;s:6:"ofList";r:37;}i:1;r:8;} a:2:{i:0;O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"foo";s:4:"next";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:8;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"bar";s:4:"next";N;s:4:"prev";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";N;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:15;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"zim";s:4:"next";r:8;s:4:"prev";O:10:"FuTreeNode":6:{s:5:"outer";N;s:6:"inners";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:22;s:5:"items";a:0:{}}s:5:"value";s:3:"foo";s:4:"next";r:15;s:4:"prev";r:8;s:6:"ofList";O:12:"FuLinkedList":1:{s:5:"items";a:4:{i:0;r:2;i:1;r:8;i:2;r:22;i:3;r:15;}}}s:6:"ofList";r:30;}s:6:"ofList";O:20:"FuLinkedTreeNodeList":2:{s:5:"outer";r:2;s:5:"items";a:2:{i:0;r:2;i:1;r:8;}}}s:4:"prev";N;s:6:"ofList";r:37;}i:1;r:22;} I'm on Mac OS X.

  • How to install PyQt on Mac OS X 10.6

    - by Albert
I want to install PyQt. This seems kind of complicated to install on OS X. I haven't found any precompiled packages of it (are there any? I would really prefer those). So I downloaded PyQt. And SIP, because it depends on that. These files: http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/static/Downloads/PyQt4/PyQt-mac-gpl-4.7.3.tar.gz http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/static/Downloads/sip4/sip-4.10.2.tar.gz Did a python configure.py && make && sudo make install on SIP -- installed without any problems. Tried the same on PyQt -- and failed of course: /Library/Frameworks/QtCore.framework/Headers/qglobal.h:288:2: error: #error "You are building a 64-bit application, but using a 32-bit version of Qt. Check your build configuration." Ok, so I tried with python configure.py --use-arch=i386. Same error. Any idea?

  • All terminal commands (like ls, cd, edit, open) are returning errors on my Mac

    - by park
From what I can tell from reading other questions/answers is that my .bash_profile file may be corrupt. If I type echo $PATH in terminal the result is: /usr/local/git/bin From what I've read, that's not what the result is supposed to be. But I also can't get any of the commands (like edit or subl, for Sublime Text 2) to open the .bash_profile file to edit it. I was able to open the file in TextEdit using "cmd-shift-.", and here's what's in the file: [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" PATH=$PATH:~/bin export PATH export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin But the file is LOCKED, so I can't edit it there either. I'm very new to programming and in the middle of trying to install everything on my Mac to go through a Ruby on Rails tutorial. I can't even check my version of ruby, since even ruby -v returns -bash: ruby: command not found Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Restoring Mac-bootcamp-windows-partition image to Windows machine

    - by jpwagner
Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • ssh into my mac from my ipod

    - by mechko
Ok so this is what I got, but it don't look right... The set up is as follows: My Mac is on a wireless network, presumably behind a firewall over which I have no admin privileges. Further, said wireless network changes my internal IP randomly at random times, so I do not know what my ip is. Note that localhost is a variable ip I forward some port or the other to my dns: ssh -R 19999:localhost:22 sourceuser@remotehost connect to my remotehost from my machine: ssh sourceuser@remotehost and then connect to the port I forwarded: ssh localhost -p 19999 [solved] Second question, there are a bunch of ssh clients for the iphone. Which one should I use? EDIT: Since jailbreak is not illegal, simply frowned upon by the Corporation, I've decided to go with that. I have a nice shell with openssh and the works. Best of all, it's free and it does exactly what you expect.

  • How did Google get on my Mac?

    - by SamGoody
Am running a MacBook Pro, and have never installed Chrome, Google Earth, or anything blatantly Google. Just installed Little Snitch (are there no good free firewalls for Mac?) and see that CURL is sending to Google every few minutes, as is a request to Google update and more. Little Snitch doesn't say what program setup these requests. So, how do I find out how G got on my machine, why is it sending so many requests (every minute or so) and how do I remove it (and is it there for reasons other than to help G spy on me)?

  • compare password hashes between c# and coldfusion

    - by czuroski
Hello, I have a password hash that is stored in a table and is put there by the following coldfusion script- #Hash(EnCrypt(UCase(GetPass.username),EnCode))# I am trying to add some outside functionality within a c# application. I would like to be able to take advantage of the data that already exists so that I can authenticate users. Does anyone know how I can replicate the above coldfusion code in c#? Thanks for any thoughts.
