  I'm trying to do it using two FILETIMEs, casting them to ULONGLONGs, substracting the ULONGLONGs, and dividing the result by 10000. But it's pretty slow, and I want to know if there is a better way to do it.I use c++ with visual studio 2008 express edition.   I was always confused about header files. They are so strange: you include .h file which doesn't include .cpp but .cpp are somehow compiled too. • Estimating file transfer time over network?

  I am transferring file from one server to another. So, to estimate the time it would take to transfer some GB's of file over the network, I am pinging to that IP and taking the average time. For ex: i ping to 172.26.26.36 I get the average round trip time to be x ms, since ping send 32 bytes of data each time. I estimate speed of network to be 2*32*8(bits)/x = y Mbps -- multiplication with 2 because its average round trip time. So transferring 5GB of data will take 5000/y seconds Am I correct in my method of estimating time. If you find any mistake or any other good method please share.

  I have an animation of traffic. I have 20 cars in road network, each car have a starting node and end node. Each car know how much distance does it need to travel in order to reach the end node. I move cars each 20 ms for 10 px. To move all cars from their start node to end node I need 60 iterations. That is 60*20ms = 1200ms. Now I want to convert this time, or use data that I have, to a real time where car move 50km/h. How can I do that? Any idea?

• What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

  Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

• LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

  Hi, I am newbie to VC++, so please forgive me if this is stupid. I have got 7 solutions under one project. Six of these build static libraries which is linked inside 7th to produce an exe. The runtime configuration of all the projects is MultiThreaded Debug. sln which is used to produce exe is using MFC other slns use standard runtiem library. I tried changing those to MFC, but still I am getting the same error. All the six slns build successfully. When I try to build exe - get the follwoing error: nafxcwd.lib(afxmem.obj) : error LNK2005: "void __cdecl operator delete(void *,int,char const *,int)" (??3@YAXPAXHPBDH@Z) already defined in tara_common.lib(fileStream.obj) This is weird because tara_common is one of the libs that I generated and fileStream.cpp is file that is just using delete on a pointer. I built it in verbose mod, so I am attaching the output.   Trying to build a marquee control with smooth text animation. Current efforts include: Using translate transform Using animation on Canvas dependency properties (Left, Right) Using animation on custom dependency property (Point) and using drawing visuals (formattedtext) Using CompositionTarget.Rendering But the animation is still choppy and resource intensive. Checklist: Confirmed no software rendering is taking place (ms performance tool and checking RenderCapability.Tier) Calling freeze on any imaginable object Running app on dual core machine with decent graphic card (NVidia 9600) Disabled any bitmap effect and transparency Checked all marquee controls out there (same issues) Any ideas (or better yet code example)?

• Create a UPnP Control Point in Silverlight

To me that implies that I'll need to use COM interop with Microsoft's upnp.dll (and the SL application will have to be out of browser and platform specific). Is there any source code available in C# that shows how to create a control point with Microsoft's stack? If there are other options available I'd like to hear about it, from reading around the web it appears the MS stack is buggy.

  I am trying to run a command line action in my Team Build (MSBuild). When I run it on the command line of the build machine it works fine. But when run in the build script I get a "exited with code 3". This is command that I am running: C:\Program Files\Wavelink\Avalanche\PackageBuilder.\jresdk\bin\java -classpath "WLUtil.jar;WLPackageBuilder.jar" com.wavelink.buildpkg.AvalanchePackageBuilder /build PackageName This command only works when run from the above directory (I have tried running it from c:\ with the full path at it fails).   From my personal research, it appears that OData implementations depend extensively on MS Entity framework. It would seem possible to implement the OData producer protocol using an open ORM like NHibernate in C# or Hibernate in Java. In the best of all worlds, it would be cool to expose data using OData protocol from Oracle. I am open to other open solutions like Java, JRuby, etc. Thanks in advance for your time.

• Problem using ‘useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy’ & supportedRuntime in an application

  Hello, I've modified a couple of different applications' .config file like this: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0"/> </startup> When I did this for devenv.exe.config (VS 2005 - don't ask :) ), things work great - most of the Visual Studio used .NET 2.0 but I was able to make use of an assembly targeting .NET 4.0 framework. I tried to do the same thing for a custom .exe, which happens to be based on MS CAB (slightly modified) and has a hybrid mix of WPF and WinForms content. As soon as I modified this application's app config file, I started getting this exception, sometime during application startup: The Undo operation encountered a context that is different from what was applied in the corresponding Set operation. The possible cause is that a context was Set on the thread and not reverted(undone). System.InvalidOperationException: The Undo operation encountered a context that is different from what was applied in the corresponding Set operation. There's a big long stack trace that doesn't show anything in my application code directly (just a bunch of MS assemblies). If I modify the application's .config file to this: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> </startup> i.e.I remove the supportedRuntime element, then the application doesn't throw this exception. But when I go to the point in my code where I try to load my .NET 4 assembly, if fails with this: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly '' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. I guess this is expected. I have two questions: 1) Any idea why I'm getting the System.InvalidOperationException exception when I modify this application's configuration file to include the supportedRuntime element, adding .NET 4 support and any suggestions on what I can do about it? 2) If the answer is "no idea why/don't know what you can do about it", then is possible for my .NET 3.5 SP1 code (C#) to provide more fine grain support for conditionally adding .NET 4 runtime support for a certain assembly(ies) without converting my entire application to target .NET 4, or without using the declarative config file approach? At some point I would convert the entire application to target .NET 4, but for the short term this is daunting task and I'm hope for some short term solution/hack. • msxml XMLHTTPRequest and timeout

  Hi, what determins the timeout value for XMLHTTPRequest (msxml version) send method? I'm calling it from MS Sql server and the server profiler shows me 'completed' after 30 seconds, the same happens when calling it through client programm calling stored proc. I set the client connection timeout to 120 sec. So im thinking it must be msxml that cancels send method after 30 secs. Any ideas?

  Is it possible to change a column type in a MS SQL 2008 database from varchar(255) to varchar(MAX) without having to drop the table and recreate? SQL Server Management Studio throws me an error every time I try to do it using that - but to save myself a headache would be nice to know if I can change the type without having to DROP and CREATE.
