• Cloud Computing - Multiple Physical Computers, One Logical Computer

  I know that you can set up multiple virtual machines per physical computer. I'm wondering if it's possible to make multiple physical computers behave as one logical unit? Fundamentally the way I imagine it working is that you can throw 10 computers into a facility one day. You've got one client that requires the equivalent of two computers worth, and 100 others that eat up the remaining 8. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like hand partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's supporting infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.

• Python installation in OSX not updating

  I've recently got into Python programming and so downloaded the latest version (3.2.3) to install on my Mac running Snow Leopard. I used the installer package. I have run the shell profile update script, but Terminal is still using 2.6.1 to run my programs. I have tried changing the paths with sudo nano as per this post but it makes no difference - it still uses 2.6.1 Any ideas, oh mighty Super Users? I am a complete noob when it comes to Terminal commands.

• How do I change the format of group by data in Excel 2003 pivot tables

  I have a data that lists the value of a contract per contract number. So I've created a pivot table that counts the number of contracts valued at 0 - 10, 11 - 20, etc. I want to be able to format the group, e.g. $0 - $10, $11 - $20 I've tried formatting the underlying data as currency and formatting the column in the pivot table, but it still shows as 0 - 10, 11 - 20 Also I have a column in the pivot table that says Total which is the Count of the number of contracts in that range, i.e. Value Total 0 - 10 1 11 - 20 1 Its an autogenerated column heading that Excel put in. How do I change this to say Number of contracts. I want it changed because when I chart the pivot table, the series is called called Total :(

(Not spam) I really like Google Apps but they have sending limits 2000 sending per day, that is not suit for my case becuz I cannot have sending limits.   I'm a new bie of server administration and I'm looking for a powerful hosting service to host my new website. This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!

I see nothing in the logs im really stumped on this. If the file is already in the directory I can read it all day long, I just cant make NEW files, can not put them, but I can do get's, I can only put to an existing file with permissions @777. Thanks

• Cisco ASA - VPN and Hairpinning....

  Hi, We have 2 sites that will be linked by a IPSEC VPN between 2 Cisco ASAs: Site 1 8Mb ADSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Site 2 2Mb SDSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Basically, both sites need access to a service at the end of another IPSEC VPN, Site 3, which I plan to terminate at Site 2. This is due to the way the service is sold - it's billed per gateway. So if both Site 1 and Site 2 had their own VPN connection to Site 3, it would cost us twice as much... Anyway, my idea is to have all traffic from Site 1 destined for Site 3 to go via the VPN between Site 1 and Site 2. The end result being all traffic that hits Site 3 has come via Site 2. I understand this is known as hairpinning but I'm struggling to find a great deal of information on how this is setup. So, firstly, can anyone confirm that what I'm trying to achieve is possible and, secondly, can anyone point me in the direction of an example of such a configuration? Many Thanks.

• SQL like group by and sum for text files in command line?

  I have huge text files with two fields, the first is a string the second is an integer. The files are sorted by the first field. What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. E.g. Given the sample data below, for the string glehnia I'd like to get 10+22=32 in the result. Any suggestions how to do this either with gnuwin32 command line tools or in linux shell? • Mail server hammering

  I've noticed a quick increase on smtp connections coming to my server, investigating it further i figured out that there's a botnet hammering my smtp server. I've tried to stop it by adding a rule at iptables: -N SMTP-BLOCK -A SMTP-BLOCK -m limit --limit 1/m --limit-burst 3 -j LOG --log-level notice --log-prefix "iptables SMTP-BLOCK " -A SMTP-BLOCK -m recent --name SMTPBLOCK --set -j DROP -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -m recent --name SMTPBLOCK --rcheck --seconds 360 -j SMTP-BLOCK -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -m recent --name SMTP --set -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -m recent --name SMTP --rcheck --seconds 60 --hitcount 3 -j SMTP-BLOCK -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT That would avoid them from hammering "too fast", however the problem still, there's like 5 tries per second, it's going insane, i had to incrase the maximum number of childs of sendmail/dovecot. There's too many ips to filter out manually and simply changing the smtp to another port is not practical since i got many other clients on that server. I'm using sendmail with dovecot, any ideas to have this filtered out more efficiently?

  I'm pondering setting up a virtual machine to generate app-v (since i got mdop from school) or thinapp application virtualisation packages. Ideally with either of these, i should work off a fresh system do the install, then copy out the packages produced. I'd like to not have to reinstall windows per package to get a fresh, unmodified stock copy of windows. I'm aware that its possible to make a hard disk image persistant in vmware player (one of my lecturers did it, but he's in another country). I'm wondering how would i convert a persistant image to a non persistant one? I'm currently running vmware player 4, with windows 7 guest and host.

I've already set my application as the default application, so that there is no need to include the context root in the URL. I'd like to: * Remove file extensions * Shorten the URL to files deep in the folder structure I'd like to do this using pattern matching rather than on a per file basis (Site is small at the moment but will change frequently and grow). • Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   I've started to notice a ticking sound emanating from my WD2500JB. It is not alarmingly loud. The sound seems to occur only when the drive has been idle for some time, and will cease upon (some?) disk activity. The sound has a regular, steady cadence of somewhere between about 4 and 6 ticks per second. I'm not entirely certain that it just started making these sounds, since I previously had the drive — mounted in a USB enclosure — stored out of earshot, and only recently moved it to where I can hear it. The SMART attributes for the drive do not indicate any problems. I did have some errors to clean up recently (since I started noticing the sounds). The errors occurred on an ext3 filesystem. The drive had been powered down while mounted a few times prior to that fsck. Is this cause for alarm? Should I scrap the drive on principle?

First, /usr/bin/screen is setuid as per the other question. Second, the default shell on this system is /bin/tcsh for various historical reasons, and we're not allowed to chsh to /bin/bash, so I typically run bash manually immediately after login. Third, I almost always use screen, but I want ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen to create a new bash "tab", so I always invoke bash first. That is: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ bash [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] screen -U [~] ...and when reconnecting: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ screen -dUr [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] However, my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is there in tcsh, there in bash, but empty once I run screen; it is still present if I just run screen from tcsh, but then I get new tcsh "tabs" when I use ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen. Any ideas?

I cant find what the problem is?

  I have a dedicated windows 2008 server and with Allocated monthly traffic: 1500GB, the hosting company sent me "Please take note that the allocated traffic included with your Budget (calculated by GB of traffic) has been exceeded. You will be billed for the exceeding traffic at the end of the month according to the per GB exceeding traffic fee specified on your contract." I checked my Google analytics account and didn't find any big different for the websites traffic this month than previous months. I just want to understand what may cause this sudden increase in traffic this month? may be ftp access? remoting to webserver too much time? or what may cause this? Also, is there any tool in the server to know where the traffic went?

"24x 10GBASE-T (10Gb/1Gb/100Mb) with 4x Combo Ports of SFP+ (10Gb/1Gb) or 10GBASE-T" the HBA on my storage server has 10G CX4 copper ports Dell does not sell any cables and this adds to my confusion. from the picture Dell 8024 seems to have RJ-45 type ports on the front panel? my question: is it a RJ-45 + CX4 cable or CX4 + CX4 cable?

Now usually using hack like for i in {1..1000}; do do_something $i& sleep 5; done, but this is not a good solution.

• Hyper-V R2 Performance Counters

  Hi all I've been playing around with the WMI performance counters for Hyper-V. Of interest to me are the Virtual NIC bytes/sec input and output counters. I notice that the results are very "spikey". Over what time period is the latest counter averaged? I'm trying to calculate total traffic volume per VM, but sometimes a very high instantaneous poll result is inflating the result as I only poll the result each minute. I would prefer to read a 'bytes total' counter instead of a 'bytes/sec' counter - is there such a thing? Thanks Acendo

• Apache2 BufferedLogs On - anybody using it ?

  Greetings, I am wondering, whether anybody is using BufferedLogs On with Apache2 and found any issues ? Feature is marked as experimental, but for many years now, so I guess it's rather pretty stable. I am running some servers with constrained disk IO capacity at the moment, so I turned it on hoping that even a small benefit could help in the long run ;-) I do have several to several hundreds requests per seconds so by my thoughts there is really no need to write to log after each request, cause honestly I don't think that my filesystem is the best handler for many unnecessary writes. (OCFS2 shared among several DomUs in the Xen)
