  • How can I reset windows 7 file permissions?

    I looked at this post and it seemed to be close to what I want, but my case might be a little worse: How can I reset my windows 7 file permissions to a rational state? Basically a while back I (very stupidly) changed the permissions on all sorts of system folders, and eventually rendered my computer virtually unusable. I managed to hack administrator privileges back onto key folders and getting it working, but in doing so I only modified permissions a lot more away from the natural state. I'm looking at this icacls stuff, but ultimately I need to reset EVERYTHING back to what it was in The Beginning, before I messed with it, from the C: directory all the way down. Right now application data is what's giving me problems, and I can't get it to work no matter how much I fiddle with those specific permissions. I will be forever grateful for help on how to do this without having to reformat.

  • Building a Student Storage server

    I work for a school district. I've been put in charge of building a storage server for students. A place for them to work off of from school and home. My challenge is getting this to work from home. At school they login, authenticate, and they get a mapped drive to their folder on the server (S:\fileserver\studentname). My question is how can I make this available to students at home? The server is running Windows Server 2003 R1. I've got PHP, Apache, and MySQL working together. My idea is to write a script that will "crawl" through the directory containing all of the student folders, then create an instance of every file and folder in a MySQL DB. Create a login page that will use LDAP for authentication, and once they login to the server from home, they get a page with folders a files tied to their username. Has anyone out there ever put something like this together??

  • Outlook 2010 Folder Structure Search

    I work at a helpdesk and today I received a call from a user who lost a folder in Outlook. When I connected to the user's PC, I discovered that the user has several hundreds of folders. She had the same name folder in several different locations. When we used Advanced Find we found the messages. It said that messages are located in folder X. The only problem was, we could not locate the folder X in the list. Does anyone know of any way to quickly and easily browse all the folders or look up a folder in Outlook 2010?

  • most simple way to get files on a server

    I am on windows and my server is linux. I would like to grab files from the server automatically with a script. Maybe execute a bash script remotely as well but maybe i dont need that. I need to connect securely and i would like some kind of password so not anyone can connect. I need to download files and i'd like to get every file in a set of folders. I do not want to download them again if they exist. What is the easiest way to do this? i thought of creating a simple .NET site with data in App_Data (so it cant be reached from the outside) however i have a feeling an easier way exist. I'd like to do scp with a shell but i am on windows and also i am unsure how to iterate through folders and only get files that dont exist.

  • Someone to clarify /tags and /branches in SVN (subversion)?

    I created folders /tags, /branches and /trunk on SVN server. I put initial project file into /trunk. But other folders confuses me. What should I put in /tags? I see most people do not ever use this folder. Is this like a temp folder or so? As I understood, the purpose of branches is to host a different versions. So I will have /branches/myapp_v1.0.0, /branches/myapp_v1.0.1, etc. Right? If this is true, how do I "tell" subversion tool (tortoise on windows, svn on linux) to upload project files into such and such folder?

So you may want to know how to make a web chat application, it seems to be quite complicated. But ASP.NET gives you the power to buiild a chat room easily. In this code sample, we will construct our own web chat room with the amazing AJAX feature. The principle is simple relatively. As we all know, a base chat application need 4 base controls: one List control to show the chat room members, one List control to show the message list, one TextBox control to input messages and one button to send message. User inputs his message in the textbox first and then presses Send button, it will send the message to the server. The message list will update every 2 seconds to get the newest message list in the chat room from the server. We need to know, it is hard for us to make an AJAX web chat application like a windows form application because we cannot keep the connection after one web request ended. So a lot of events which communicates between client side and server side cannot be realized. The common workaround is to make web requests in every some seconds to check whether the server side has been updated. But another technique called COMET makes it possible. But it is different with AJAX and will not be talked in details in this KB. For more details about COMET, we can get some clues from the Reference.   CSASPNETCurrentOnlineUserList and VBASPNETCurrentOnlineUserList This sample demos a system that needs to display a list of current online users' information. As a matter of fact, Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline Method  can get the number of online users and there is a convenient approach to check whether the user is online by using Membership.GetUser(string userName).IsOnline property,however many asp.net projects are not using membership.So in this case,the sample shows how to display a list of current online users' information without using membership provider. It is not difficult to check whether the user is online by using session.Many projects tend to be used “Session_End” event to mark a user as “Offline”,however ,it may not be a good idea,because it can’t detect the user status accurately. In addition, "Session_End" event is only available in the "InProc" session mode. If you are storing session states in the State Server or SQL Server, "Session_End" event will never fire. To handle this issue, we need to save the user online status to a  global DataTable or  DataBase. In the sample application, define a global DataTable to store the information of online users.Use XmlHttpRequest in the pages to update and check user's last active time at intervals and also retrieve information on how many users are still online. The sample project can auto delete offline users' information from a global DataTable by checking users’ last active time. As we know, it is not hard for us to get the IP address of visitors via Request.ServerVariable property, but it is really difficult for us to know where they come from. To achieve this feature, the sample uses a free third party web service from http://freegeoip.appspot.com/, which returns the information about an IP address we send to the server in the format of XML, JSON or CSV. It makes all things easier.   CSASPNETBackgroundWorker Sometimes we do an operation which needs long time to complete. It will stop the response and the page is blank until the operation finished. In this case, we want the operation to run in the background, and in the page, we want to display the progress of the running operation. Therefore, the user can know the operation is running and can know the progress. CSASPNETInheritingFromTreeNode In windows forms TreeView, each tree node has a property called "Tag" which can be used to store a custom object. This is the fourth part of the shell extension series: Preview Handler. The code samples demo the C++, C# and VB.NET implementation of a preview handler for a new file type registered with the .recipe extension. Preview handlers are called when an item is selected to show a lightweight, rich, read-only preview of the file's contents in the view's reading pane. This is done without launching the file's associated application. Windows Vista and later operating systems support preview handlers. To be a valid preview handler, several interfaces must be implemented.     Proxy generation tends to be very slow when done using jdeveloper wizard and even more this time increases when jdeveloper is started over a remote desktop connection. So here's step-by-step howto that can be used to generate webservice proxy from your *nix shell Create a dir in your scratch area : e.g. /tmp/<username>/genproxy Get build.xml file attached, save it in the dir above and change the properties defined in it to match your ws endpoint. More specifically you need to edit: proxy.wsdl - the path (either locally or URL) where WSDL file can be accessed from proxy.handler - the handler class proxy.package - the class package where the proxy will be generated Start a new shell session (out of the ADE view if you're using one) and set the environment needed for proxy generation using ant and Oracle WebServicesAssembler genProxy [1] $ setenv ORACLE_HOME /opt/jdev_local/10.1.3/ $ setenv PATH $ORACLE_HOME/ant/bin:$PATH Note that the above env setup is needed even if you already have ORACLE_HOME set and ant utiliy available in your PATH. That way you'll be sure the proxy will be generated using the same libraries your jdeveloper is using in its wizard Generate proxy $ cd /tmp/<username>/genproxy $ ant genproxy And voila, the proxy files should be available in ./src directory.   • Booting Ubuntu Failure : error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

    I have installed ubuntu 12.10 in a WD external harddrive (320GB). This is a complete installation, not live USB. When I plug it in my HP desktop I go to the BIOS settings and boot off the harddrive, everything work perfectly -as it should. Now this works on everysingle computer and laptop in my house (all HP) -except for ONE. My HP ProBook 4530s. When I select to boot of the USB I get the Message: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0' Now, I have removed the hdd from my laptop and the external drive is the ONLY drive plugged in. Bellow is a picture of the screen. After the message I navigate to ls / (as shown below): After here I try to acces other folders under ls /, for example, I try to go to ls /boot to get to the grub folder. Then I get the same message as before: as shown by the image below: The only folders I can access without getting the message again are /home, /run and /usr. So how do I: Boot Ubuntu from GRUB2 (this screen) manually Set to automatically boot Ubuntu If possible an explanation for this problem Thanks!

  • Automatic desktop/work environment setup

    I have this strange thing I am trying to do, so before I jump into it I was curious if someone knows about existing solution or maybe have an advice as far as implementation. I run a small software company and as it happens I often do very different type of work. When I do coding for Java project I need Eclipse running and maybe VM with something like ActiveMQ server or whatever, plus terminals to tail -F log files specific to the application, etc. When I do something like weekly progress review with my team I need a few browser windows open and a gedit to take notes and so on. Depending on the type of work I am doing I generally have all of the related apps open in multiple different Workspaces. So in the example above Eclipse would be open in Workspace 1, terminals would be sharing Workspace 2 and so on. What I am trying to do is to automate opening of all these applications, positinoning them on the screen and assigning them to proper Workspaces. My current idea consists of having a Shell script that launches specific apps depending on what type of work I am about to start doing. Is there anything to aid this type of automation? Or is my only option is just a shell scripting at this point? My current system is Ubuntu 10.04

    I use Wubi to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Windows 7 system. My PC is Acer Aspire S5-391 with a 64-bit operating system. After I finish installing Wubi on Windows I reboot my PC as told by the instruction. Then I got a black screen with the following words shown: [[BGave up waiting for root device. Common Problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay=(did the system wait long enough?) -check root=(did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/928E20128E1FEE0B does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.18.5(ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4)built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (intramfs) _ I don't know how to deal with this but force my PC to shut down. I can still successfully enter Windows. But everytime I try to enter unbuntu, it shows the above words.......

So I: Installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop x86 on a VMWare virtual machine, Installed eclipse-cdt and linux-headers-2.6.38-8 using Synaptic Package Manager, Created a C Project named TestDriver1 and copy-pasted above code to it, Changed the default build command, make, to the following customized build command: make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 The problem I get an error when I try to build this project using eclipse. Here is the log for the build: **** Build of configuration Debug for project TestDriver1 **** make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 all make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' make: *** No rule to make target vmlinux', needed byall'. Stop. make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' Interestingly, I get no error when I use shell instead of eclipse to build this project. To use shell, I just create a Makefile containing obj-m += TestDriver1.o and use the above make command to build. So, something must be wrong with the eclipse Makefile. Maybe it is looking for the vmlinux architecture (?) or something while current architecture is x86. Maybe it's because of VMWare? As I understood, eclipse creates the makefiles automatically and modifying it manually would cause errors in the future OR make managing makefile difficult. So, how can I compile this project on eclipse?

  • Ubuntu One Sync as a File Backup Solution?

    I was hoping to utilize Ubuntu One and in particular, the syncing feature within Ubuntu One to provide offsite backup for some of my files. My intention was to mark any of my folders that have important files as 'folders to synchronize' to Ubuntu One. It works great in that whenever an important file is placed in the folder, the file is copied up to Ubuntu One (hence creating a backup). However, if any of these important files are lost or accidently deleted from my computer then due to the synchronization it is also immediately deleted from Ubuntu One. This approach does not work very well to provide backup. On one hand I really like the automatic way in which the synch feature will upload any of my important files to Ubuntu One but on the other hand if I lose the file on my computer it will likely be taken off of the cloud as well (via synchronization). What approach are others taking to backup their important files to Ubuntu One? I didn't want to have to manually upload my important files to Ubuntu One and remember to upload other important files as they are created on my computer. Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • cPanel's Web Disk - Security issues?

    I'm thinking of using Web Disk (built into the later versions of cPanel) to allow a Windows or Mac computer to map a network drive that is actually a folder on our website (above the public_html folder). We currently use an antiquated local server to store information, but it is only accessible from one location - we would like to be able to access it from other locations as well. I understand that folders above public_html are not accessible via http, but I want to know how secure is the access to these folders as a network drive? There is potentially sensitive information that we need to decide whether it is appropriate to store here. The map network drive option seems to work well as it behaves as if the files are on your own computer (i.e. you can open and save files without then having to upload them - as it happens automatically). We have used Dropbox for similar purposes, but space is a issue with them, as is accountability and so we haven't used it for sensitive information. Are there any notable security concerns with using Web Disk as a secure file server?

  • How do I create a .deb file?

    Yes, I know that this question has been asked many times before, but none of the answers really helped. I'd like to package the Minecraft launcher (which has no proprietary code, AFAIK,) into a .deb file so that I can put it on a flash drive and share it with my friends. I have managed to install Minecraft it manually (put some files into /opt/minecraft, download an icon, and create a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications,) and I have made a shell script that completely automates the process, but it relies on wget to retrieve a few files, including the .desktop file. (It isn't a self-extracting archive, after all.) I'd like to be able to do this offline, as a lot of my friends have slow or no internet. (One of their internet lines was buried so shallowly that it actually got knocked out by the lawnmower.) I won't be loading it into a PPA or anything like that; I just want it to be a "formal" package that can be easily installed and uninstalled. (One thing that I would like is for sudo apt-get purge minecraft to also remove the .minecraft folder. It would also be nice to define the dependedcies as being able to accept OpenJDK or Sun's JVM.) Oh, just so you know, the Minecraft launcher is a .jar file, but I can very, very easily launch it via shell scripts. The exact command is right on the download page.

  • Migrating a Windows Server to Ubuntu Server to provide Samba, AFP and Roaming Profiles

    I'm replacing our old Windows XP Pro office server with a HP Microserver running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. I'm not a Linux expert but I can find my way around a terminal prompt, I'm a Mac user by choice. The office use a mix of Windows XP Pro machines and OSX Lion laptops. I included Samba during installation, and I'm planning on using Netatalk for the AFP and Bonjour sharing. I'd quite like to have samba make the server appear in 'My network places' on the Windows machines the way Bonjour makes it appear in finder on the Macs, if this is possible? I want to get to a point so that a user logging into Windows, gets connected to the Ubuntu server (do they need an Ubuntu user account?) which get them their shares and their Windows user profile (though a standard profile across users would do). The upshot is to make centralised control of user accounts (e.g. If a person leaves, killing their account on the server stops their Windows logon and ability to access Samba shares) and to ensure files aren't stored on the individual machines for backup/security purposes. I want to make this as simple as possible, so don't want to have loads of stuff I don't need, I just can't figure out: What I need at the server end: - will Samba be enough (already installed as part of initial installation), or will I need to cock around with LDAP (and how does this interact with Samba) - For someone of moderate Linux competence like me, is there a package that offers easy admin of user accounts, e.g. a GUI like phpLDAPadmin (if LDAP is necessary) How to configure the XP machines: - do I need to have the XP machines set up as a domain controller (I've no idea, really) - roaming profiles looks to offer the feature of putting the user's files on the server rather than the machine itself along with a profile that follows the user from machine to machine. Syncing Mac user's home folders with the server This is less of a concern because I can set up Time Machine if it comes to it, but I'd appreciate any recommendations of what approach I should take having the Mac home folders synced to the server.

  • Configure WebCenter PS5 with WebCenter Content - Bad Example

    I opened JDeveloper, created a content repository connection with all the required fields. While testing the connection, the connection became successful. But while navigating to the Webcenter Content Connection, I am ( Always use past tense ) getting the following error. Notice the inconsistency in the image resolutions SEVERE: Could not list contents of folder with ID = dCollectionID:-1oracle.stellent.ridc.protocol.ServiceException: No service defined for COLLECTION_DISPLAY. To solve the issue, please find the following the steps in Webcenter Content. 1. Login into webcenter content : https://<hostname>:<port number>/cs 2. Click on 'Administration' and select 'Admin Server' 3. This will open a new window in browser, please select 'Component Manager'. 4. In the right side window, please click on 'Advanced component manager' 5. We can see all the enabled and disabled features. The main problem for this error is folders_g is not enabled and Framework folders might have enabled. But for creating a connection with webcenter portal framework or with webcenter spaces, we need folders_g, then only we will get Contribution folder. 6. come to the enabled feature session, select Framework folders and disable it. 7. Come to the disabled feature session, select folders_g in the list and enable it. 8. Restart the Webcenter content node. 9. Login into webcenter content system, go to 'Browse Content' menu. If we are able to see 'Contribution Folder' the problem is solved. ( Avoid dubious sentences ) We can configure webcenter content with Webcenter portal framework or with webcenter spaces.

  • Installation experiences with NDepend under Win7/64 with restricted user permissions

    Today Patrick gives me a new license for his static code analysis tool NDepend for my fresh machine with Win7/64. This platform is new for me, so some things are different to Win XP. Maybe that till yet some of these things are not well enough understandanded from me. So i stepped in some traps. Here are my notes to get NDepend running. Download of NDepend Professional Edition from http://www.ndepend.com/NDependDownload.aspx   Extracted to c:\program files (x86)\NDepend   Started NDepend.Install.VisualStudioAddin.exe this failed with Okay – sounds plausible.   Copy NDependProLicense.xml to this folder   Next try with NDepend.Install.VisualStudioAddin.exe opens the integration dialog   Registering in Visual Studio failed with   Manually unblock as described (first solution hint)   and here comes my largest understanding problem. After unblocking this file   and closing this dialog the next opening shows the blocking again: Why? So the same error during integration pops up.   Okay – tried the second solution hint with copying folders Copy all to a full accessable folder under c:\temp\   Now the installation works   looks good   copying the folders back to c:\program files (x86)\NDepend   starting Visual Studio failed with     Okay – copying the folder to a private application folder c:\users\apf\My Applications\NDepend   Installing again   Now Visual Studio runs and NDepend is integrated Nevertheless my machine is only used by me, i prefer “all user”-installations. The described way works sadly only for my account.

Also I want to note that when I connect my GalaxyTab 2 7.0 that I still get a pop-up of ubuntu that a device was connected. I also can still see the mapstructure, the problem however is is that all the folders have 0 bytes and do not have any subfolders. I can only see the folders in the root. ps.   • How to account for speed of the vehicle when shooting shells from it?

    I'm developing a simple 3D ship game using libgdx and bullet. When a user taps the mouse I create a new shell object and send it in the direction of the mouse click. However, if the user has tapped the mouse in the direction where the ship is currently moving, the ship catches up to the shells very quickly and can sometimes even get hit by them - simply because the speed of shells and the ship are quite comparable.
