  • Why doesn't video run smoothly on my laptop anymore?

    This might be an impossible question to answer remotely but I figure there may be some common causes that people can suggest so I think it's worth asking... Video no longer plays smoothly on my laptop. It used to but not for a while now. For example, playing a video on YouTube is pretty typical: I press play (making sure it's not on HD or even HQ) and the video buffers a little then starts to play. At first it plays fine then the video starts to stutter, turning into a slideshow while the sound continues to play smoothly. If I try playing the same video on my Playstation 3 (which is linked to the same network) it plays smoothly so it can't be the connection. Another example is streaming DivX videos. Again, I wait while it buffers and it starts but very soon, instead of a slideshow, this time the video just plays slowly while the sound continues as normal (instantly getting out of sync). Even if I let the video fully load before pressing play (i.e. it's no longer streaming), it still behaves the same way. I can even let it load 100% then save the file to hard disk and use VLC player to view it, and the same thing happens. I'm using an old laptop running Windows XP. For the past several years it's been connected to the router via Wi-Fi but in the past few days I've changed that to a network cable (like my PS3) but that hasn't helped. Yes, I regularly install various bits and pieces of software but nothing that I can identify as being the cause. So, are there known causes of this sort of behaviour and if so, what can I do to fix it? Thanks. Update to answer a few questions... Laptop Spec' (note: video has played back fine for the majority of time I've had the laptop) Toshiba Satellite 1900-603 (possibly called something else outside the UK) Intel Pentium 4 2.2 Ghz Processor Originally had 512Mb memory but recently doubled that to 1 Gig of memory Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon 16Mb DDR VRAM Windows XP SP3 (Home edition) Over the years I've done several things to speed it up (disabling indexing etc) and am generally happy with the performance. I also regularly have a clear out of old software (if for no other reason than the laptop only has a 40Gb hard disk) and use CCleaner and Glary Utilities to strip out much of the crap from my system. Also recently (after doubling the memory), I've tried a few new things which might be likely candidates for slowing the video down such as Rocketdock, Jingle keyboard (which gives an old style 'clacky' typewriter sound when I type - love it), SugarSync, Taskbar Shuffle. However, the video doesn't play smoothly even when I try quit all these apps.

    What resources (books, Web pages etc) exist out there that: explain the causes of latency in TCP/IP-over-Ethernet networks; mention tools for looking out for things that cause latency (e.g. certain entries in netstat -s); suggest ways to tweak the Linux TCP stack to reduce TCP latency (Nagle, socket buffers etc). The closest I am aware of is this document, but it's rather brief. Alternatively, you're welcome to answer the above questions directly.

  • Function keys require Fn modifer. How can I make them default?

    On my Dell Studio 15, the function keys, by default, do things like switch the radio on/off or change the brightness or sound. To use them as function keys I have to hold down the Fn modifier. I use function keys as function keys a lot more often than I want to change the volume or brightness. Am I missing an obvious setting somewhere in the control panel (Vista Uber Extreme Something)?

  • hyperv machine guest loads slow

    this is by far one of the strangest things I have seen. I have a win 2008R2 cluster with a CSV. the CSV itself is on an iSCSI storage (hitachi HUS 110) basic config of the two hosts in the cluster is Dell R610 Win 2008 R2 with all patches 64GB 1 NIC for host access 2 NICs for guest access 2 NICs for iSCSI these machine work great and I can load a 2008R2 test guest machine on them in less than 90 seconds after the above config is running for over a year, I now need to add a new host. now the host is Dell R620 (Still intel but different CPU) Win 2008 R2 with all patches 64GB 1 NIC for host access 2 NICs for guest access 2 NICs for iSCSI I added this new host to the domain and to the cluster, I gave it access to the CSV and I tried loading the same guest machine that loads in 90 seconds in the other hosts. the machine loads in about 6 minutes. no matter how many times I try this the old hosts load the machine in about 90 seconds and this new host in around 6 minutes to eliminate any problems with the iSCSI connection, I added a new LUN and directly accessed it from the new host and I was working at around 300MB/s so no problem there. I also tested the connection between the other hosts and the new one and network is working fine there too. to eliminate problems in HyperV, I copied the machine to the local disk of the new host and it loaded in less than 20 seconds. now is the point were things get a lot stranger: in my tests I tried installing a fresh windows guest machine to the CSV from the new host. I noticed that while the fresh windows was installing, my test guest was loading in less than 90 seconds even on the new host (I repeated this a few times). If I paused the fresh install guest and tried loading the test guest again it loaded in 6 minutes. and again after I resumed the guest installation the test guest loaded fast. after the fresh windows was also loaded, I ran tests loading the fresh window and my test machine. each one of them loaded in about 5 minutes when I tried loading them separately. however when I started both of them in the same time they both loaded in around 2.5 minutes it seems that the iSCSI disk access is only working if it is under some load (although I never got to above 10% utilization according to the task manager) does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

That way, taking into consideration of the potential biases of the reviewer, I can evaluate the product/service for the worse it can be. How do people google (or search in general) for bad reviews? I usually just try googling "bad review [product/service]" or "[product/service] sucks", but I'm sure there are better ways.

  • Diagnosing a Memcache server with a high cache miss rate

    Hi Guys, What tools are available to debug a memcache server with a high miss rate (62%)? Ideally I would like to know the keys for the top cache misses, but I would just settle for seeing the keys of live get requests and working it out from there. I have tried a few web based things (phpMemcache) but it doesn't have the information I need. I also tried statsproxy-1.0 which appeared to do what I need but would not play ball. Many thanks

    Both less -r (preserve terminal control sequences) and less -S (chop long lines) work well alone. But using them together breaks things. It chops too late and it wrecks the next line. Reducing COLUMNS environment variable is no op: (man less) But if you have a windowing system which supports TIOCGWINSZ or WIOCGETD, the window system's idea of the screen size takes precedence over the LINES and COLUMNS environment variables.     my laptop's internal harddrive is a bit slow. I looked at the drive properties and there are two options: [X] Enable write caching on the device [ ] Turn off windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device As you can see, the first option is checked already, but the second option isn't. I've heard the second option can really speed things up, but it also sounds very risky. Is it safe to do on a laptop that rarely is off of AC power? (but still has battery as well)

    I bought a small 256MB slice from slicehost and installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit and wordpress on it. Performance was dismal as apache was eating up all my memory. Once I did some taming of apache and switched to fCGI things ran fine. Next I rebuilt as a 32 bit server, and performance was much better. What benefit would I get from a 64 bit server. Is it all about the memory?

  • How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

    I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted.   • System Reserved partition no longer marked as System

    I recently posted a question to Super User about accidentally marking my external HDD's partition as Active and how I could undo my accidental mistake. I followed the instructions provided and they worked fine. This involved some command line magic and from what I understand, I did not have to really do this, but I just wanted to get things back to how they were originally. After making the fix things went back to normal in disk management. After I restarted my computer though i had an issue: BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Rugh roh! I brought my laptop to work so I could search for a solution on my work computer and I found a nice guide on fixing the issue. To summarize the instructions, I had to reboot with my Windows 7 install disc and click the Repair button. Once there I could then repair the start-up options. One of the commenters on the site claimed you need to do this twice, as the first time the "repair" doesn't actually fix it. I found this to be true as well. I tried to repair it and it did some work, then rebooted. I then got the same error again. I booted from the CD again and repaired the start-up options then after this second time Windows started to boot up. Before the restart I got a nice info window telling me that it did make repairs to the boot info (this was promising). I've been using Windows 7 for a few days now with no problem, but I just recently noticed that I now can see the System Reserved partition in Computer: (click for full size) I immediately went to disk management to see what was up. I noticed that my System Reserved partition is no longer marked as System and instead I believe the repair operation made my C: drive the system partition. I'm not fully aware of what the System partition really is but I briefly read that its a Windows 7 thing that gets created on install of Win7 that writes some BitLocker encryption stuff to a isolated partition as well as some boot files. (click for full size) How can I undo this and make the System Partition marked as System instead of my OS C: partition? How can I make it so that I don't see this partition in Computer (I believe fixing #1 will fix this) What are the implications of what the current state is and the fact that I can now browse into this new partition?   • 403 forbidden root on apache mac os x 10.7, but can access user directories

    When I access http://localhost/ I get 403 Forbidden, but if I access http://localhost/~username it serves up pages. Things I've tried: - checking error logs - swapping out with original httpd conf files - changing DocumentRoot to my user directory (after all that should work if I can access ~username) I've seen 30 plus Q&A sites that all point to people having trouble with user directories being forbidden. I have the opposite problem, and so I'm tearing my hair out here.

  • Local admin password recovery: Windows Vista

    I am faced with an unsettling situation. A friend of my father's has rather suddenly become a widower. Naturally they've taken care of the bank accounts and all the normal mundane things that people have been doing for a century or so. However, she was the computer user of the household. He was aware that they had some online banking stuff and bill paying stuff ... and that she spent lots of time on FaceBook and stuff like that. However, he doesn't know what her local passwords were (actually only vaguely aware that her couple of desktop and couple of laptop system even had passwords). He's never heard of "admin" passwords so that's no good either. In the past I've used KNOPPIX and the old LinuxCare "bootable business card" to recover NT passwords. I've never done this with MS Windows Vista. So, I'm looking for the best advice on how to do this. Naturally I do have physical access to the systems (the two laptops are charging across the room from me; and her old desktop systems are, naturally, still back at his place). Getting it right is much more important than fast or easy (I don't want to mess up those filesystems and possibly lose some photos or other stuff that he or his kids or grandkids will want). (BTW: if anyone things this is some social engineering hack to play upon the sympathies of the community to get the information I'm asking for ... think about it for a minute. I know about IRC and the "warez" boards. I know I can find this stuff out there if I dig enough. I'm just asking here because it'll hopefully be faster and, secondarily to raise awareness. As more of us put more of our lives online ... as we get older and as places like FaceBook continue to widen the appeal of computing to a broader segment of older people ... we are, as computer nerds, going to see a lot more of this. Survivors will needs us to be careful, sensitive and ethically responsible as they try to recover those bits of legacy during their bereavement. I can now tell you, first hand, it sucks!)
