• Site Review: Facebook.com and Blockbuster.com - Navigation Schemes

  After cycling through a list of my favorite sites I decided to select Facebook.com and Blockbuster.com for this  post because I found their navigation schemes very intuitive. Facebook in my opinion took a very simplistic and minimalistic approach when they designed their site and its navigation. For example, when you login to your account you will find on the upper left hand side a generic section of the site common areas to all users like news, messages, events, photos and friends. Below this in a separate navigation menu is a list of applications that a user has elected to access through bookmarks. Finally in the upper right hand corner of the site contains links to administer the user’s account like account settings, public profile, and a link back to the users’ home page. Blockbuster on the other had tried to make site navigation a little more slick by using a menu-submenu approach to navigation where user can click on things like Rent, Buy, On Demand, Games, Stores, and Gifts and a submenu of corresponding items appears below the original menu item. In addition they also took this approach and added categorized lists of movies that they offer on the homepage so that users can click on an item like “DVD Spotlight” and a list of movies represented as actual DVD box cases appear on the user’s screen so they can scroll through the list by using left and right arrows on either side of the images displayed. Both Facebook and Blockbuster have more than one navigation groupings because their respected sites are so large and offer an absorbent amount of features. Because of this reason they have to group the main functionality of information in to logical groups based on their actions they perform and the access to specific information. For example it would not make sense for Facebook to include a particular game you like to play within your account with a section pertaining to account administration. The game link would be completely out of place and really confuse the users experience because the groupings where not logically grouped. In addition I think that Facebook users would benefit if Facebook allowed its users to specify what they want on the general navigation from within their site or at least create a section to show frequently accessed pages or favorite sections. Finally regarding additional navigation, I think blockbuster users really benefit from the submenu system of categorizing data, and if fact Blockbuster even allows them to refine the information they are looking for through the use of secondary submenu systems allowing users to really drill down in to what they are looking for to learn more on. I do not think that having more than one navigation bar on a web page is not confusing for the user. For example if you have a navigation bar at the top of your page and at the bottom will allow users to move around the website easier because they can utilize the navigation closest to where their cursor is on the page. In regards to designers forcing all the navigation in to one navigation bar, I think it would be hard for the user to fully understand what is going on based on the size and complexity of the site they are dealing with. For example Blockbuster has a ton of content that could not easily be put in to one navigation bar. From my experience with both Facebook and Blockbuster, they both do a good job with cross browser compatibility. I have had no issues with either site in IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari over the years. In addition, I do not believe that either Facebook or Blockbuster require any additional plug-in to utilize their navigation bars.

• How do I hide the UITableViewCell border for a custom cell in a group tableview?

  What I am trying to do: I want three buttons side-by-side in a tableviewcell just like in Contacts app. What I've done: I have a custom tableviewcell with three uibuttons in it. I've set the background color of the tableviewcell to be transparent. What I can't figure out: The tableviewcell border is still there! Everything looks great except for the border floating around the 3 buttons. Am I doing this completely wrong? Or is there a simple way to remove/hide the border? Thanks!!!

• REST api design to retrieve summary information

  I have a scenario in which I have REST API which manages a Resource which we will call Group. A Group is similar in concept to a discussion forum in Google Groups. Now I have two GET access method which I believe needs separate representations. The 1st GET access method retrieves the minimal amount of information about a Group. Given a *group_id* it should return a minimal amount of information like { group_id: "5t7yu8i9io0op", group_name: "Android Developers", is_moderated: true, number_of_users: 34, new_messages: 5, icon: "http://boo.com/pic.png" } The 2nd GET access method retrives summary information which are more statistical in nature like: { group_id: "5t7yu8i9io0op", top_ranking_users: { [ { user: "george", posts: 789, rank: 1 }, { user: "joel", posts: 560, rank: 2 } ...] }, popular_topics: { [ ... ] } } I want to separate these data access methods and I'm currently planning on this design: GET /group/:group_id/ GET /group/:group_id/stat Only the latter will return the statistical information about the group. What do you think about this ?

• Python- Convert a mixed number to a float

  I want to make a function that converts mixed numbers and fractions (as strings) to floats. Here's some examples: '1 1/2' -> 1.5 '11/2' -> 5.5 '7/8' -> 0.875 '3' -> 3 '7.7' -> 7.7 I'm currently using this function, but I think it could be improved. • JPQL / SQL: How to select * from a table with group by on a single column?

  I would like to select every column of a table, but want to have distinct values on a single attribute of my rows (City in the example). I don't want extra columns like counts or anything, just a limited number of results, and it seems like it is not possible to directly LIMIT results in a JPQL query. • How do I create a C# .NET Web Service that Posts items to a users Facebook Wall?

  I'm currently toying around with the Clarity .NET Facebook API but am finding certain situations with authentication to be kind of limiting. I keep going through the tutorials but always end up hitting a brick wall with what I want to do. Perhaps I just cannot do it? I want to make a Web Service that takes in the require credentials (APIKey, SecretKey, UsersId (or Session Key?) and whatever else I would need), and then do various tasks: Post to users wall, add events etc. The problem I am having is this: The current documentation, examples and support provide a way to do this within the context of a Web site. Within this context, the required "connect" popup can be initiated and allow the user to authenticate and and connect the application. From that point on the Web can go on with its business to do what it needs to do. If I close the browser and come back to the page, I have to push the connect button again. Except this time, since I was already logged into facebook, I don't have to go through the whole connection process. But still ... How do applications like Tweetdeck get around this? They seemingly have you connect once, when you install their application, and you don't have to do it again. I would assume that this same idea would have to applied towards making a web service because: You don't know what context the user is in when making the Web service call. The web service methods being called could be coming from a Windows Form app, or code behind in a workflow.

• Haystack / Whoosh Index Generation Error

  I'm trying to setup haystack with whoosh backend. When i try to gen the index [or any index command for that matter] i receive: TypeError: Item in ``from list'' not a string if i completely remove my search_indexes.py i get the same error [so i'm guessing it can't find that file at all] what might cause this error? it's set to autodiscover and i'm sure my app is installed because i'm currently using it. • What are some funny loading statements to keep users amused?

  Nobody likes waiting but unfortunately in the Ajax application I'm working on at the moment, there is one fair-sized pause (1-2 seconds a go) that users have to undergo each and every time they want to load up a chunk of data. I've tried to make the load as interactive as possible. There's an animated GIF alongside a very plain, very dull "Loading..." message. So I thought it might be quite fun to come up with a batch of 50-or-so funny-looking messages and pick from them randomly so the user never knows what they're going to see. The time they would have spent growing impatient is fruitfully used. Here's what I've come up with so far, just to give you an idea. var randomLoadingMessage = function() { var lines = new Array( "Locating the required gigapixels to render...", "Spinning up the hamster...", "Shovelling coal into the server...", "Programming the flux capacitor" ); return lines[Math.round(Math.random()*(lines.length-1))]; } (Yes -- I know some of those are pretty lame -- That's why I'm here :) The funniest I see today will get the prestigious "Accepted Answer" award. • Best pratice: How do I implement a list similar to Stackoverflow's Users List?

  Technologies involved: ASP.NET Web-forms Javascript (jQuery for instance) Case To make it clearer let's give the Stackoverflow Users list as an example. This list can be manipulated at client-side. I can search, page and so forth. So obviously we would need to call jQuery.ajax to retrieve the HTML of each page given a search. Alright. Now this leaves me with the first question: What is the best way to render the response for the jQuery.ajax at server-side? I can't use templates I suppose, so the most obvious solution I think is to create the HTML tags as server-controls and render them as the result of an ASHX request? Is this is best approach? Nice. That solved we have yet another problem: When the user first enters the Authors List the first list page should already come from the server completely rendered alright? Of course we could render the first page as well as an ajax call but I don't think it's better. This time I CAN use templates to render the list but this template couldn't be reused in case 1. What do I do? Now the final question: Now we have 2 rendering strategies: 1) Client and 2) Server. How do I reuse code for the 2 renderings? What are the best pratices for solving these problems?

• Sharepoint isn't accepting new Credentials initially when switching users.

  Hi all, I have a standard website (one webapplication and one site collection) with some custom pages and webparts. The issue I'm having is that when I try to switch users, using the "Sign In As a Different User" and entering new credentials (even for another site collection admin account), IE tries the account three times, and then it presents a 401 Access Denied screen. After that, if I erase all the stuff of access denied page from the browser's url, I'm logged as the new account I just had entered and was not accepted. After researching for a while on google, I found a KB ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970814 ) that might relate, but just tested here and it didn't work at all.   I hope I am not missing something very simple here. I have done a Google search(es) and searched through stackoverflow. Here is the situation: For simplicity's sake let's say I have a table called "PeoplesDocs", in a SQL Server 2008 DB, that holds a bunch of people and all the documents that they own. So one person can have several documents. I also have a table called "RequiredDocs" that simply holds all the documents that a person should have. Here is sort of what it looks like: PeoplesDocs: PersonID DocID -------- ----- 1 A 1 B 1 C 1 D 2 C 2 D 3 A 3 B 3 C RequiredDocs: DocID DocName ----- --------- A DocumentA B DocumentB C DocumentC D DocumentD How do I write a SQL query that returns some variation of: PersonID MissingDocs -------- ----------- 2 DocumentA 2 DocumentB 3 DocumentD I have tried, and most of my searching has pointed to, something like: SELECT DocID FROM DocsRequired WHERE NOT EXIST IN ( SELECT DocID FROM PeoplesDocs) but obviously this will not return anything in this example because everyone has at least one of the documents. Also, if a person does not have any documents then there will be one record in the PeoplesDocs table with the DocID set to NULL. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, Ben

  Our marketing department comes back with "active directory integration" being a key customer request, but our company does not seem to have the attention span to (1) decide on what functional changes we want to make toward this end, (2) interview a broad range of customer to identify the most requested functional changes, and (3) still have this be the "hot potato" issue next week. To help me get beyond the broad topic of "active directory integration," what does it mean in your .NET app, both ASP.NET and WinForms? Here are some sample changes I have to consider: When creating and managing users in your app, are administrators presented with a list of all AD users or just a group of AD users? When creating new security groups within your app (we call them Departments, like "Human Resources"), should this create new AD groups? Do administrators assign users to security groups within your app or outside via AD? Does it matter? Is the user signed on to your app by virtue of being signed on to Windows? If not, do you track users with your own user table and some kind of foreign key into AD? What foreign key do you use to link app users to AD users? Do you have to prove your login process protects user passwords? What foreign key do you use to link app security groups to AD security groups? If you have a WinForms component to your app (we have both ASP.NET and WinForms), do you use the Membership Provider in your WinForms app? Currently, our Membership and Role management predates the framework's version, so we do not use the Membership Provider. Am I missing any other areas of functional changes? Followup question Do apps that support "active directory integration" have the ability to authenticate users against more than one domain? Not that one user would authenticate to more than one domain but that different users of the same system would authenticate against different domains.

  What's an effective approach to debug NameErrors in Rails? I'm trying to use the desert plugin (0.5.0) and the edge version of Community_Engine. I've started from scratch and gone through the installation instructions. When I attempt to start my server, I get this error: "Constant RAILS_END from rails_end.rb not found (NameError)". Problem is I cannot find rails_end.rb, nor can I find a google reference to this file or error. I've verified that the required gems are installed and current. I've dug around google and desert, but haven't found any reference to this constant. Any ideas? • Possible to have multiple Profiles in ASP.NET for different users?

  My application has a few different user types with their own members. For example, I have the student user as well as the teacher user. I authenticate my users through active directory in my custom MembershipProvider's ValidateUser method. While querying AD, I pull out all their relevant information. I'd like to put that information into a Profile, but from what I've read and the examples I've sen, you can only define a single Profile (like so): <profile defaultProvider="CustomProfileProvider" enabled="true"> <properties> <add name="YearLevel" type="String" /> <add name="Name" type="String" /> <add name="Age" type="String" /> </properties> </profile> The above profile would work for a student, but not for a teacher, who does not have a value for "YearLevel" in AD. Is it possible to have multiple profiles to accomplish this? Or is it easier to add all properties from AD spanning all user types, then in my code, just check what user type they are and then access their specific properties?

• How can I efficiently group a large list of URLs by their host name in Perl?

  I have text file that contains over one million URLs. I have to process this file in order to assign URLs to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600 MB of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300 MB). Could you provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and puts the url into a hash.   I have three columns in my data table. 1) ProductID 2) ProductParentID 3) ProductTotal ProductID and ProductParentID are self refrencing columns where i can set parent child relationship and get child rows based on my relationship. Let us say i have following data Product1     Product11     Product12     Product13         Product131         Product132         Product133 Product2     Product21     Product22     Product23 Next to above hierarchy in Product total column what i want is total of each child rows and sum of those child rows product total should be rolled up to it parent product. E.g if Product 131 total is 10,Product 13 total is 15 and Product 133 total is 5 then the product 13 total should be 30. The logic should work for n number of self hierarchy. Is there any functionality in data table itself where i can achieve this without iterating through each row and do it manually ? Thanks.
