• Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

• Can't install Ubuntu in Windows 8

  I’ve been trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit edition on an ASUS (K53Z) laptop. I have Windows 8 64-bit installed in a non UEFI mode (I think since it starts-up with the Windows logo and I don’t have the UEFI settings). This laptop had installed Windows 7 and when I upgraded it I didn’t knew about the UEFI advantages. I tried several times to install Ubuntu from a USB device and it loads the logo and then I can’t go further in the installation. I thought it was the version of Ubuntu and tried to install Fedora (even if I personally prefer Ubuntu). I had the same problem: Fedora’s logo appears and it gets stuck. I tried also to boot from different USB devices and didn’t work either. My Bios has EFI options to boot but they were not enabled. So I tried to enable them to boot the USB in UEFI mode. A menu shows up with the options of install Ubuntu and try Ubuntu. If I click the Install or try option, I get a black screen and I can’t go further with the install (which I think is normal since I don’t have Windows 8 in EFI mode). My hypothesis is that the Bios isn’t letting Ubuntu write or read from my SSD, because the activity LED in the USB memory is on when it’s loading the installation files. Once the files are ready and the Ubuntu logo is loaded I don’t see a LED activity on neither the SSD or the USB. Thanks If I missed data you can ask me.

• Ubuntu cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Ubuntus installer by booting from CD it sees the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have also tried Kbuntu 10.10, Fedora 14, booting a Gparted 0.8.0 usb drive, and Ubuntu "install in Windows" with wubi they all have problems. EDIT: When I run the "try Ubuntu" option on booting from cd it can mount my Windows partition and I can view the files. The output of sudo parted -l when running in try Ubuntu mode: Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? • Grub2 cannot detect Windows 8

  At installation it did not detect Windows. I mounted the Windows partition and have run os-prober with no results returning. I am able to boot Windows or Ubuntu by specifying the partition in UEFI boot order. The bios does not appear to allow booting with legacy. SecureBoot is on. This is with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Inspiron 15. • Grub not loading after Windows 8 Install

  My system was configured to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Windows 7. Today I got my hands on the MSDN release of Windows 8 and I installed it over my Windows 7. Now the computer just boots to Windows 8 directly without loading the GRUB screen. So I followed the steps as suggested in: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows. • Installing Ubuntu on HP Envy 4 - 1104tx (preinstalled Windows 8)

  I have been using Linux for more than 2 years now. I had hp pavilion dv4 laptop and Ubuntu 12.04 was working great. I recently purchased HP Envy 4 - 1104tx which has Windows 8 preinstalled. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 but since it is not much compatible with UFEI, I downloaded 64 bit iso of ubuntu 12.10. Made a liveUSB using UnetBootin 583. I followed Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed UEFI Supported Windows 8 system but still I am not able to boot with LiveUSB. I disabled secure boot. There is no option for fast boot or anything as such. It still wouldn't work. I also tried booting through Legacy, but I'm unable to install via LiveUSB. Is there any other way? I don't have SSD so no problem of fake raid. Is there some way by which I can install Ubuntu (12.04 preferred)? I don't care about Windows 8. Is there any way via which I can install Ubutnu over Windows 8? (I don't have a CD/DVD ROM).

More often than not, this will solve the problem albeit some reconfiguration i.e. Outlook, Excel add-ins etc. As I took over the systems admin role from another administrator, I would like to know what is the easiest way to find out (either through a third party or some Windows administrative tool) what settings are carried over if the profile is a Roaming Profile. I tested creating a new user profile for one of my users and it seems basic Outlook settings such as the user's mailbox and PSTs are carried over automatically when I create a new user profile. I suspect this is done through a batch file loaded as part of the login script. However, my knowledge of scripting is limited and I don't want any corruptions to be carried over to the new profile. Can someone share their experiences on this? Thanks in advance.

• What would cause my Windows machine to seize?

  I run Windows XP SP2 on a Desktop I built (I know that doesn't provide much, but I can't say "on a Dell X103938R" or something). It has 'seized' about 7 times in its year and a half life. Everything freezes. I can't move the mouse cursor and the keyboard seems unresponsive. I can turn the monitor on and off and it will hold the last image. The light for the mouse is responsive if I move it. The keyboard lights change when pressed (cap locks, etc). I've waited upto ten minutes for a change, nothing. I haven't connected any activity to the seizing. It's happened when all I was "running" were fullscreen programs (games), just checking email, or once when I was sitting at my desktop (I was reading a book and when I tried to use the mouse, nothing). I've never been able to figure it out. I have to hard reset, and then its fine. It doesn't file system check or anything (not sure if Windows does that). No error when I load up the computer, nothing. If I had uTorrent open, it will have to recheck the torrent files to make sure they weren't corrupted though. (It's not always open when it seizes either). I'm using an AMD Athlon 5400+ with a NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, if that helps. I'm using two hard drives, 500Gb Wester Digital with a 1Tb Hitachi.

• How to fix UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME (0x000000ED) on my Windows XP DELL laptop?

  I have a Dell Latitude D410. Running Windows XP. I am receiving the STOP: 0x000000ED (0X899CF030,0XC0000185,0X00000000,0X00000000) Blue screen. Initially, I tried everything specified with the Microsoft KB articles. At this time, I was able to boot into the general safemode. I pulled the hard drive and was able to run chkdsk on it- it noted that it had fixed some errors, but I was still unable to boot. I put a brand new hard drive in the laptop. Windows XP installation worked up until the reboot, at which time the exact same error message came back up. What I have tried (all since the new hard drive was installed): chkdsk /R All suggested solutions in Microsoft KB articles Reseating RAM Opened laptop, reseated all connectors, looked for signs of damage (saw none) Reset BIOS options to default Ran the basic Dell diagnostics I have looked at the current entry:How can I boot XP after receiving stop error 0x000000ED - I am currently in the process of downloading the Ultimate Boot CD to use as a test, but I am not holding out a lot of hope as I really doubt this brand new Hard Drive is bad. • Printer Management in AD Domain

  Hello, I normally push out all my printers via group policy preferences. However, the new copy machines I have are using some stranger drivers and I can not install x64/x86 drivers on the same machine for my clients to pull drivers from. So now I have two machines setup with the printer so they can pull drivers. Ontop of this there is specific driver configuration settings such as requiring the user to enter an access code to print set. Once the printer is installed via GPP, it puts everything to the default such as color mode, and other custom settings we like. I considered just using a Windows Print Server for this, but I do not know a way to push/delete these from clients like I can with GPP. Does anyone know how I can have a GPP copy the custom configuration I have set in the driver or have any recommendations?

  After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem. • Can I have both Windows dynamic disk partition and some other non-Windows partition on the same disk?

  When a basic Windows disk is converted to dynamic, Windows creates a partition that span the whole disk with the type of "Windows LVM" and manages its dynamic partitions within this space. So even if there is still free space on this disk, it is not visible to any other OS besides Windows. This happens with MBR and GPT disks both. I would like to share a Windows dynamic disk with some other OS. I have to have dynamic disks because I use Windows SoftRaid (mirrors). So, my questions are: Is there any way to "force" Windows to take up less then the whole disk when it converts a basic disk to dynamic? Will Windows tolerate having some other non-Windows partition on its dynamic disk?

  How do I schedule a task to run once any time within a time range? and also, just once in a day without specifying a time? can windows task scheduler do it? and specifically, if my computer is off or on standby or hibernation at the time I want it to run it when it is on if it hasn't been run that day and the time has passed. I see an option to wake it to run the task , but could I then put it back to sleep? And i'd like to be able to as mentioned.. let it run when the computer is back on.

• Enable automatic driver install in Windows XP

  When Windows detects new hardware (be it graphic card or USB Peripheral) it automatically installs driver and if it can't find a driver it shows "Found New hardware wizard" that allows you to manually select a driver. My problem is that this "Found New hardware wizard" shows up every time when I plug a new device and I have to click Next Next Next.. until it finishes installation. It's just like in Windows 98 ;) I want to fix it to the way it's supposed to be. It's got nothing to do with "Windows Update" and "Driver Signing" settings in "System properties - Hardware" tab, those are on default settings. • Possible to restore Windows Partition disk image?

  I have a machine that was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I used the Disks program in Ubuntu to make a disk image of my windows partition which I saved on an external disk. I then reformatted the main drive and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I created a spare partition and restored that Windows disk image to that partition. Is it possible to boot Windows? I have run boot-repair and Grub now gives me both Ubuntu and Windows options but when I select Windows I get only a black screen with blinking cursor. I ran a Windows recovery disk and ran startup repair but still no luck. I also tried running lilo inside Ubuntu but still can't boot Windows. Any other ideas? PS, I'm on a Netbook with no DVD drive so I can't just reinstall Windows though if that is my only option I can borrow a DVD eventually.

• Increased CF JVM max heap size and now CF service will not start

  So I went in to ColdFusion Administrator and increased my CF JVM max heap size, then I was told I would need to restart the service, so I stopped the service, and then tried to start it again and got the following error message: Windows could not start the ColdFusion 8 Application Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2. So I went to the Event Viewer application, then took a look at the Application log and saw an error that said: The ColdFusion 8 Application Server service could not be started. Check the server "coldfusion" log files for more information. So I went to my ColdFusion logs directory opened the server.log log file and I don't see anything useful in there or any of the other log files.. Any idea how I can change the JVM heap size back to what it was so that I can start CF again?

I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice. • Color Profiles in Windows 7 vs. XP

  I have a Brother Color Laser Printer and an HP 8150DN. I have a local Windows 7 Pro machine that I do graphics work on. I created a letterhead that when printed from my machine looks dark and rich on either the mono HP or the color Brother laser. I take this same letterhead, and move it onto our network for use by our users which are all on XP. Then they print the same file, it is washed out on either printer. I've confirmed that the printer settings we're using are identical. I've confirmed that its not related to the program or even specifically to the letterhead. I can duplicate this with other files too. I'm down to XP vs Windows 7 being the issue. I'm fairly certain now that color profiles are involved. I have no clue how to fix it though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
