• DELL Inspiron 9400 SD Card Reader not working on 10.11 ubuntu

  Im new in linux, just installed Ubuntu 11.10 in a Dell Inspiron 9400, everything works fine with the exception of the SD card reader, everytime I insert a card the computer doesnt do anything, its like the SD card reader is not there. • How to Play PC Games on Your TV

  No need to wait for Valve’s Steam Machines — connect your Windows gaming PC to your TV and use powerful PC graphics in the living room today. It’s easy — you don’t need any unusual hardware or special software. This is ideal if you’re already a PC gamer who wants to play your games on a larger screen. It’s also convenient if you want to play multiplayer PC games with controllers in your living rom. HDMI Cables and Controllers You’ll need an HDMI cable to connect your PC to your television. This requires a TV with HDMI-in, a PC with HDMI-out, and an HDMI cable. Modern TVs and PCs have had HDMI built in for years, so you should already be good to go. If you don’t have a spare HDMI cable lying around, you may have to buy one or repurpose one of your existing HDMI cables. Just don’t buy the expensive HDMI cables — even a cheap HDMI cable will work just as well as a more expensive one. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI-out port on your PC and one end into the HDMI-In port on your TV. Switch your TV’s input to the appropriate HDMI port and you’ll see your PC’s desktop appear on your TV.  Your TV becomes just another external monitor. If you have your TV and PC far away from each other in different rooms, this won’t work. If you have a reasonably powerful laptop, you can just plug that into your TV — or you can unplug your desktop PC and hook it up next to your TV. Now you’ll just need an input device. You probably don’t want to sit directly in front of your TV with a wired keyboard and mouse! A wireless keyboard and wireless mouse can be convenient and may be ideal for some games. However, you’ll probably want a game controller like console players use. Better yet, get multiple game controllers so you can play local-multiplayer PC games with other people. The Xbox 360 controller is the ideal controller for PC gaming. Windows supports these controllers natively, and many PC games are designed specifically for these controllers. Note that Xbox One controllers aren’t yet supported on Windows because Microsoft hasn’t released drivers for them. Yes, you could use a third-party controller or go through the process of pairing a PlayStation controller with your PC using unofficial tools, but it’s better to get an Xbox 360 controller. Just plug one or more Xbox controllers into your PC’s USB ports and they’ll work without any setup required. While many PC games to support controllers, bear in mind that some games require a keyboard and mouse. A TV-Optimized Interface Use Steam’s Big Picture interface to more easily browse and launch games. This interface was designed for using on a television with controllers and even has an integrated web browser you can use with your controller. It will be used on the Valve’s Steam Machine consoles as the default TV interface. You can use a mouse with it too, of course. There’s also nothing stopping you from just using your Windows desktop with a mouse and keyboard — aside from how inconvenient it will be. To launch Big Picture Mode, open Steam and click the Big Picture button at the top-right corner of your screen. You can also press the glowing Xbox logo button in the middle of an Xbox 360 Controller to launch the Big Picture interface if Steam is open. Another Option: In-Home Streaming If you want to leave your PC in one room of your home and play PC games on a TV in a different room, you can consider using local streaming to stream games over your home network from your gaming PC to your television. Bear in mind that the game won’t be as smooth and responsive as it would if you were sitting in front of your PC. You’ll also need a modern router with fast wireless network speeds to keep up with the game streaming. Steam’s built-in In-Home Streaming feature is now available to everyone. You could plug a laptop with less-powerful graphics hardware into your TV and use it to stream games from your powerful desktop gaming rig. You could also use an older desktop PC you have lying around. To stream a game, log into Steam on your gaming PC and log into Steam with the same account on another computer on your home network. You’ll be able to view the library of installed games on your other PC and start streaming them. NVIDIA also has their own GameStream solution that allows you to stream games from a PC with powerful NVIDIA graphics hardware. However, you’ll need an NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console to do this. At the moment, NVIDIA’s game streaming solution can only stream to the NVIDIA Shield. However, the NVIDIA Shield device can be connected to your TV so you can play that streaming game on your TV. Valve’s Steam Machines are supposed to bring PC gaming to the living room and they’ll do it using HDMI cables, a custom Steam controller, the Big Picture interface, and in-home streaming for compatibility with Windows games. You can do all of this yourself today — you’ll just need an Xbox 360 controller instead of the not-yet-released Steam controller.   I am using ubuntu 10.04 LTS in my lenovo laptop and have a android ICS device. I want to create a wifi-hotspot in ubuntu, which I can later use for connecting android device. I need this setup for capturing the packets from android device and later analysing them using wireshark in my ubuntu. I tried to create a new hotspot using "Create a new wireless Network" wizard from network manager applet, but for some reason the following happens. It breaks the existing internet connection(either the WLAN, or ethernet) Its not visible in the list of available WIFI hotspots in the android device.   I've been searching online and reading tutorials and etc about how to make my ubuntu VM dual screen(x86_64). • Mouse takes a while to start working after boot

  I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) and a number of my USB devices have stopped working. At least, they don't work for the first 3-5 minutes. I have two mice (one wireless, one wired) and a camera, which seem to take Ubuntu 3-5 minutes to recognize after booting up. • Display resolutions missing after upgrade to Ubuntu 12-10

  I recently upgraded my dual-boot HP laptop (dv7-3060us, 17.3" display) from ubuntu 12-4 to 12-10. After the upgrade, only three (3) resolutions are available (800x600, 1024x768, and 1152x864, all 4:3 resolutions), none of which are 16:9. Everything worked properly in 12-04. The display adapter is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions about how to correct this problem? Thanks.

• Tools for Enterprise Architects: OmniGraffle for iPad?

  Well, I have to admit to being a bit of an Apple fan and, of course, and early adopter of gadgets and technology in general.  So, when FedEx showed up with my iPad 3G last week, I was a kid in a candy store.  One of the apps that my “buy finger” was hovering over for a while (like all of 3 days) was Omnigraffle for the iPad.  I imagined that it would be very cool to use this with a customer’s EA’s to sketch out Business, Application, Information and Technology architectures.  Instead of using the blackboard, this seemed to offer promise as a white-boarding tool with obvious benefits over a traditional white-board.  I figured I’d get a VGA adapter, plug it into the customer’s projector and off we would go with a great JAD tool.  The touch pad approach offered an additional hands-on kind of feel. So, I made the $49.99 purchase + the $29.99 VGA adapter and tried to give it a go.  Well, I was both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised.  It is both powerful and easy to use.  There are great stencils included for shapes, software icons, Visio shapes, and even UML notation.  There is even a free-hand tool that works well.  I created some diagrams pretty quickly.   The one below was just a test and took all of 10 minuets to do. The only problem was that Onmigraffle does not recognize the VGA output, so I was stopped dead in my tracks, as it were.  My use case was as a collaborative diagramming tool with other architects, though I can still use it off line.  I called Omnigraffle and they said that VGA support is on the feature request list so, hopefully, in a short amount of time, I can use the tool as I envisioned.   Review: Criteria Result Is it fun?   I have a Dell Vostro 220s with the built-in Intel GMA X4500HD graphics adapter. I am using Maverick (10.10). My Philips 190CW 1440 x 900 pixel monitor is connected via the analog path. After a fresh installation of Maverick, this works on various resolutions but 1440 x 900 is not one of the available options. I may need a hardware specific driver. Does a GMA X4500HD driver exist that will work on Maverick?

  Can't get ubuntu 12.04 to set pixel resolution higher than 1360x768. Very new to linux liking it other than this lol. I have a dell xps 420 with a nvidia geforce 260 hooked up to my 55 inch tv through a dvi/hdmi adapter.The display program wont set the resolution above 1360x768.I have tried the two "additional driver" options for the graphics card and the Details Window doesn't recognise with either driver.

• Second Monitor stays black/in power save mode

  I'm using two Monitors, a Belinea o.display 1 (Recognized as a Rogen Tech Distribution Inc 20" by Ubuntu, but working fine) on the DVI-Output (connected via DVI-to-VGA-adapter) as my primary Monitor and a Dell 19" (Recognized correctly) on the HDMI-output (via HDMI-to-DVI adapter) as secondary monitor. The graphics controller is a GeForce 9500 GS. I'm running a fully updated Ubuntu 13.04 with nouveau 1:1.0.7-0ubuntu1. The problem is that the second monitor (Dell) never seems to come out of standby during boot: the screen stays black and the status led on the monitor stays orange (it's green when it's on). It is correctly recognized an the size of the desktop is set accordingly, it just stays black. Changing any setting via xrandr/arandr/etc. does nothing. The on-screen-menu of the monitor reports it to be in power save mode. When using the proprietary NVIDIA-Drivers, the second monitor works just find. But these drivers cause a lot of other problems on my system, so i would really like to avoid them. On Ubuntu 12.10 i had found a workaround: When moving the relative position of the second monitor slightly down and the up again, it would turn on and function normally: xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1280x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-1 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x88 --rotate normal sleep 2 xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1280x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-1 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal This workaround stop working after the update to 13.04, and now i'm looking for a new solution.   Hi, After by battery died on my laptop I started my computer after plugging it to the ac adapter, for no reason that I know I cant use the visual effects any more as if my graphic card is not installed (my graphic card is GeForce 300m and nvidia x-settings is working) I tried generating a new xorg.conf file but nothing happened I marked all the installed nvidia driver in synaptic for re installation and didn't really help I googled the problem appears to be popular but couldn't find a solid solution Any Ideas ?

  I have a Ubuntu guest configured with two interfaces, eth0 is using NAT and works fine, I can access the net. The second interface eth1 is set to host only networking and VirtualBox has created a vboxnet0 virtual adapter on the host. I've configured vboxnet0 in VirtualBox adapter settings with the following: ip 192.168.21.20 subnet 255.255.255.0 Once the VM guest is running, ifconfig on OSX has vboxnet0 setup as: vboxnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00 inet 192.168.21.20 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.21.255 In the guest, eth0 is set to use DHCP, I've statically assigned eth1 to 192.168.21.20 (is this a mistake?): auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.21.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.21.0 broadcast 192.168.21.255 gateway 192.168.21.1 There is no device on 192.168.21.1 - what should I set my gateway to? • What registry key or windows file determines where monitors are placed in a multi monitor environmen

  So I have a laptop with a usb to vga adapter (http://www.startech.com/item/USB2VGAE2-USB-VGA-External-Multi-Monitor-Video-Adapter.aspx) which allows me to add a third monitor to my laptop (the second monitor uses the onboard slot) It worked fine on windows vista - you could go into windows display settings and windows would recognize the third monitor and let you drag it around accordingly. With windows 7, the third monitor literally is not there in windows display settings. The driver allows you to display to the third monitor, but you can't move where it is. The display settings are misplaced relative to my other two (if you drag windows over to it, they end up on the bottom when it should be aligned). I called tech support and they said that there isn't a driver with this functionality for windows 7 yet. But here's my hunch. The monitor placement is still somewhat similar to where I had it on vista, it's just off about 500 pixels or so. I think there is either a registry key or driver file somewhere that is telling this monitor where to exist. If I could just modify the number and move it up 500 pixels, it would be in the right place and I don't have to wait 6 months for the company to come out with a new driver. Any ideas???
