• Flex list-controls - maintain remote data

  Hello. I have a TileList which represents some remote data. I also have a form which allows me to change the data. And the data may be changed by someone else too. What is the best way to maintain data in the list in an up-to-date state? The simplest option I see is the following: Select an item in the list Edit it in the form Save it. The form submits the data to the server When the server reports success the list re-fetches it's data The very bad thing about this workflow is that the list loses selection (a tree would also loose the nodes' expanded/collapsed state). I would really love to find out another option which would enable the list to maintain it's selection state. Any guesses on how it may be done?

• Storing Values in colunms alphabetic?

  Is there any benefit to storing content alphabetic in columns? Maybe make lookups faster? If yes then when i add new lookup values to my tables do i need to rebuild the PK for the looup values to fit in the new text? Say a table like this: City_tbl city_id: example: 1120 City_name: example: New York. If I need to add Chicago to it, do i add it at the bottom of the list with the next ID which may be 2000 or do i inset it after the city in alphabetic order which would mean I need to update the PK Id of all following IDs by 1. Only benefit I know about is when I have to manually add lookup values without quering the database I can quickly check the lookup value list for exiting items with ease. But not sure if it may make lookups faster or something if the system knows the text is in aplhabetic order.

• Looking to redo a static website

  I have been asked to help redo my non-profit website. I would like to make it look better. What would be the best way to do this? I have some technical background and can learn. I have looked at various options such as Joomla, word press and so on but I am not certain on how to create a good UI for it. I have also looked at Ruby and such, which I think may be overkill for a static page such as this. I haven't done any programming etc in a few years, but I figure this may be an opportunity to get back into it.

• Saving substrings using Regular Expressions

  I'm new to regular expressions in Java (or any language, for that matter) and I'm wanting to do a find using them. The tricky part that I don't understand how to do is replace something inside the string that matches. For example, if the line I'm looking for is Person item6 [can {item thing [wrap]}] I'm able to write a regex that finds that line, but finding what the word "thing" is (as it may differ among different lines) is my problem. I may want to either replace that word with something else or save it in a variable for later. Is there any easy way to do this using Java's regex engine?

  Following on from my last question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2788082/sql-server-query-performance, and discovering that my method of allowing optional parameters in a search query is sub optimal, does anyone have guidelines on how to approach this? For example, say I have an application table, a customer table and a contact details table, and I want to create an SP which allows searching on some, none or all of surname, homephone, mobile and app ID, I may use something like the following: select * from application a inner join customer c on a.customerid = a.id left join contact hp on (c.id = hp.customerid and hp.contacttype = 'homephone') left join contact mob on (c.id = mob.customerid and mob.contacttype = 'mobile') where (a.ID = @ID or @ID is null) and (c.Surname = @Surname or @Surname is null) and (HP.phonenumber = @Homphone or @Homephone is null) and (MOB.phonenumber = @Mobile or @Mobile is null) The schema used above isn't real, and I wouldn't be using select * in a real world scenario, it is the construction of the where clause I am interested in. Is there a better approach, either dynamic sql or an alternative which can achieve the same result, without the need for many nested conditionals. Some SPs may have 10 - 15 criteria used in this way

I check specification and v8 code, there is 'in' operator just call 'HasProperty' operator, which realization on c++.. • Is there a way to pass a regex capture to a block in Ruby?

  I have a hash with a regex for the key and a block for the value. Something like the following: { 'test (.+?)' => { puts $1 } } Not exactly like that, obviously, since the block is being stored as a Proc, but that's the idea. I then have a regex match later on that looks a lot like this hash.each do |pattern, action| if /#{pattern}/i.match(string) action.call end end The idea was to store the block away in the hash to make it a bit easier for me to expand upon in the future, but now the regex capture doesn't get passed to the block. Is there a way to do this cleanly that would support any number of captures I put in the regex (as in, some regex patterns may have 1 capture, others may have 3)?

However, I am an amateur when it comes to hardcoding GUI. • Where can I get a one-off server of Active Directory for Developing against?

  We're not a windows shop, but one of our products is going to need to optionally integrate with Active Directory - things like SSO etc. I'd really rather not go through the rigamarole of setting up a whole server just to develop against it and then leave it hanging around for testing purposes. Is there a simple cloud-based service where I can purchase a server running active directory for a month or two just for development purposes? I looked into Amazon EC2 but it looks like you may still need to go through a significant set up (I may be wrong on this).

  Hello everyone. The Cocoa framework has a convention to always call self = [super init] in the init method of an inherited class, because [super init] may return a new instance. What will happen if I do this? @interface MyClass : NSObject /* or any other class */ { int ivar_; } @end @implementation MyClass - (id)init { ivar_ = 12345; if ((self = [super init])) { NSLog(@"ivar_'s value is %d", ivar_); } return self; } @end In the case when [super init] returns a new instance, what will I see in the console? ivar_'s value is 0? I can't think of a way to check this myself, because I don't know which class may return a new instance from its init method. Also, can't seem to find explicit clarification for this scenario in the docs. Could anyone help me out? Thanks!

  I'm using the Model First approach with EF 4 and hit a snag with two tables, Participant (singular because pre-existing from another app) and ActiveParticipants. A Participant may or may not be associated with exactly one ActiveParticipant and vice versa. When I create an association, everything seems to go well on the surface, but then I get a runtime error complaining that Participant does not contain the column ActiveParticipant_Id. It does contain a column ActiveParticipantId (no underscore). When I view the diagram as XML, there's a line like this: <Property Name="ActiveParticipant_Id" Type="uniqueidentifier" Nullable="true" /> Why is it adding an underscore? Is there anything special I need to do for 0:1, 0:1 relationships?

• Why can't i call Contains method from my array?

  Arrrg!I am running into what i feel is a dumb issue with a simple script i'm writing in powershell. I am invoking a sql command that is calling a stored proc, with the results i put it a array. The results look something like this: Status ProcessStartTime ProcessEndTime ------ ---------------- -------------- Expired May 22 2010 8:31PM May 22 2010 8:32PM What i'm trying to do is if($s.Contains("Expired")) , report failed. Simple...? :( Problem i'm running into is it looks like Contains method is not being loaded as i get an error like this: Method invocation failed because [System.Object[]] doesn't contain a method named 'Contains'. At line:1 char:12 + $s.Contains <<<< ("Expired") + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (Contains:String) [], RuntimeException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : MethodNotFound So, what can i do to stop powershell from unrolling it to string? • Java/Swing: JTable.rowAtPoint doesn't work correctly for points outside the table?

  I have this code to get a row from a JTable that is generated by a DragEvent for a DropTarget in some component C which may or may not be the JTable: public int getRowFromDragEvent(DropTargetDragEvent event) { Point p = event.getLocation(); if (event.getSource() != this.table) { SwingUtilities.convertPointToScreen(p, event.getDropTargetContext().getComponent()); SwingUtilities.convertPointFromScreen(p, this.table); if (!this.table.contains(p)) { System.out.println("outside table, would be row "+this.table.rowAtPoint(p)); } } return this.table.rowAtPoint(p); } The System.out.println is just a hack right now. What I'm wondering, is why the System.out.println doesn't always print "row -1". When the table is empty it does, but if I drag something onto the table's header row, I get the println with "row 0". This seems like a bug... or am I not understanding how rowAtPoint() works?

• PHP strtotime() setting date to default

  I have a script which is reading values from an excel sheet and inserting them into an sql table. My problem is when the script reads in some of the date fields it is setting them to a default value : 1970-01-01 01:00:00 I have noticed that this is happening when it comes across a date where the 'day' is greater than 12 : 13/05/2012 18:52:33 (dd-mm-yyyy hh-mm-ss) I thought this may be due to the script thinking that this is the month field (i.e american format) and it sees it as an invalid value, so I set the default timezone to my own hoping it may resolve the problem but it made no difference. date_default_timezone_set('Europe/Dublin'); Here is an example of what my code is doing: Excel field value : 01/05/2012 18:32:45 Script: $start_time = $data->val($x,5); echo $start_time = date("Y-m-d H:i:s", strtotime($start_time)); Output: 2012-01-05 18:32:45 This is the exact format I am looking for (except for the fact that the day and month fields are switched around i.e american date format) but it doesnt work for the type of dates I mentioned above.

  Hi. I subscribe to usb inserted event like this select * FROM __INSTANCECREATIONEVENT WITHIN 3 WHERE TARGETINSTANCE ISA Win32_DiskDrive After inserting usb flash it blinks every 3 seconds. This is polling interval and intrinsic events work by polling object that's in query. Now, we know these types of events may be resource expensive. (Putting value greater then 3 sometimes chokes these events and client program doesn't get notified). Are there other ways to do that, so that usb doesn't get scanned all the time? May be there some extrinsic events available? Right now the only solution I see is to unsubscribe from event above once it trigerred and resubscribe to it in __INSTANCEDELETIONEVENT handler.   Hi! I've seen projects which use many screens each one for different layout and functionality. I've seen projects with only one screen (like wizard workflow) where content is changed on user interaction (and this seems to be logical to use single screen in wizards). But also I've seen projects (apps like game or messenger or phone settings utility) which use single screen for different functionalities. I can see such advantages of having single screen in app: keep same decoration design and menu or toolbar (which may be also achieved with inheritance) keep single screen in ui stack (which may be achieved by pop/push screen) easy to handle data over application Can you tell other advantages/disadvantages of single screen app? When its better to use this approach? Thank you!
