• Is the XML processing instructions node mandatory ?

  I had a discussion with a colleague of mine about the XML processing instructions node (I'm talking about this = <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>). I believe that for something to be called "valid XML", it requires a processing instructions node. My colleague states that the processing instruction node is optionnal, since the default encoding is UTF-8 and the version is always 1.0. This make sense, but what does the standard says ? In short, given the following file: <books> <book id="1"><title>Title</title></book> </book> Can we say that: It is valid XML ? It is a valid XML node ? It is a valid XML document ? • Read data from an Android USB attachment

  Is there anyway to read data from an attachment through the USB port on an Android device? In particular, an EKG. Most the work can be done by the hardware of the device to simplify the output to a single number, a voltage reading. If its not possible, what about modifying an accessory that can already communicate with an android device? Thinking of devices that attach to android phones, what about sending the data as an audio signal to be read as the microphone from a headset and then analyzing the audio signal to convert it to a number that can be used to display a value. Any ideas on how to make this work?

  Hi, I'm working on an application that analizes music similarity. In order to do that I proccess audio data and store the results in txt files. For each audio file I create 2 files, 1 containing and 16 values (each value can be like this:2.7000023942731723) and the other file contains 16 rows, each row containing 16 values like the one previously shown. I'd like to store the contents of these 2 file in a table of my MySQL database. My table looks like: Name varchar(100) Author varchar (100) in order to add the content of those 2 file I think I need to use the BLOB data type: file1 blob file2 blob My question is how should I store this info in the data base? I'm working with Java where I have a double array containing the 16 values (for the file1) and a matrix containing the file2 info. Should I process the values as strings and add them to the columns in my database? Thanks

• How to replicate Google "Hangouts On Air" stream combining functionality?

  I've been researching this one for quite a bit but haven't found any solid leads. I have a Wowza/Flash app with video chatroom functionality and would like to combine the streams server-side into one video/audio stream in order to be sent to a live Youtube channel. I've found a couple projects such as jMixer and some helpful keywords such as "vision mixer" to help with my search but looking for any previous experience or new ideas. The other option is building something like it myself with a commercial video decoding/encoding library to raw frames, stitching the frames together, then encoding it. I was originally going down this route but put project on hold. What are some ideas, keywords, or existing software (open source preferred) to take those live streams and combine them into one in real-time? Or is coding it myself the required route? Thanks!

• rake db:create not working for legacy rails app (2.3.5) using MySQL (5.5.28)

  I'm a new Rails Developer, and I'm working on a legacy Rails app. Whenever I run the rake db:create command, I get an error that the database couldn't be created. I have found many StackOverflow questions related to this, but in troubleshooting nearly all permutations of solutions, I couldn't resolve the issue. I created the three Dbs (dev, prod, test), created the user with all access privileges to these dbs, and ran rake db:create. I'm running Mac OS X Lion, MySQL 5.5.28, Rails 2.3.5, Ruby 1.8.7. Here are my settings development: adapter: mysql encoding: utf8 database: adva_development username: adva password: **** host: localhost socket: /tmp/mysql.sock Here's the error: Couldn't create database for {"adapter"=>"mysql", "username"=>"adva", "host"=>"localhost", "encoding"=>"utf8", "database"=>"adva_development", "socket"=>"/tmp/mysql.sock", "password"=>"****"}, charset: utf8, collation: utf8_unicode_ci (if you set the charset manually, make sure you have a matching collation) I have done the following troubleshooting: Verified user and password are correct, and the user has access to the DB. (Double checked user access with SELECT * FROM mysql.db WHERE Db = 'adva_development' \G; User has all privileges.) Verify the socket is correct. I don't really understand sockets, but I can plainly see it at /tmp/mysql.sock. Checked collation and character set. I found out I had created the DB in latin charset and collation, so I recreated them. I ran show variables like "collation_database"; and show variables like "character_set_database"; and came back with utf8 and utf8_unicode_ci respectively. I followed the instructions in this question. After uninstalling mysql gem, I ran the following but came up with the same error: gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri mysql -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql-5.5.28-osx10.6-x86_64/bin --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql-5.5.28-osx10.6-x86_64/bin/mysql_config Following Matt's suggestion, here's what a rake --trace db:create reveals: ** Invoke db:create (first_time) ** Invoke db:load_config (first_time) ** Invoke rails_env (first_time) ** Execute rails_env ** Execute db:load_config ** Execute db:create Couldn't create database for {"database"=>"adva_development", "adapter"=>"mysql", "host"=>"127.0.0.1", "password"=>"woof2adva", "username"=>"adva", "encoding"=>"utf8"}, charset: utf8, collation: utf8_unicode_ci (if you set the charset manually, make sure you have a matching collation) After 3 days and six or seven hours, I have pretty much run out of options. I tried various random things, like replacing localhost with 127.0.0.1 to no avail. Could there be something wrong related to my specific environment? Mac OS X Lion + MySQL 5.5.28? I plan on trying on setting up everything in a Linux environment. Thanks!

  I want to play a wav file synchronously on the gui thread, but my call to PlaySync is returning early (and prematurely stopping playback). The wav file is 2-3 minutes. I tried lengthening the load timeout, but that did nothing. I'm not quite sure what the best way to get the duration of a wav file is without using code written by somebody who isn't me/Microsoft. I suppose this can be calculated since I know the file size, and all of the encoding properties (bitrate, sample rate, sample size, etc) are consistent across all files I intend to play. Can somebody elaborate on how to calculate the duration of a wav file using this info? That is, if nobody has an idea about why PlaySync is returning early. Of Note: I encountered a similar problem in VB 6 a while ago, but that was caused by a timeout, which I don't suspect to be a problem here. Shorter (< 1min) files seem to play fine, so I might decide to manually edit the longer files down, then play them separately with multiple calls.

  Hi, I have a header file which contains a member variable declaration of a static char array: class ABC { public: static char newArray[4]; // other variables / functions private: void setArray(int i, char * ptr); } In the CPP file, I have the array initialized to NULL: char ABC::newArray[4] = {0}; In the ABC constructor, I need to overwrite this value with a value constructed at runtime, such as the encoding of an integer: ABC::ABC() { int i; //some int value defined at runtime memset(newArray, 0, 4); // not sure if this is necessary setArray(i,newArray); } ... void setArray(int i, char * value) { // encoding i to set value[0] ... value [3] } When I return from this function, and print the modified newArray value, it prints out many more characters than the 4 specified in the array declaration. Any ideas why this is the case. I just want to set the char array to 4 characters and nothing further. Thanks...

• Django Custom Field: Only run to_python() on values from DB?

  How can I ensure that my custom field's *to_python()* method is only called when the data in the field has been loaded from the DB? I'm trying to use a Custom Field to handle the Base64 Encoding/Decoding of a single model property. Everything appeared to be working correctly until I instantiated a new instance of the model and set this property with its plaintext value...at that point, Django tried to decode the field but failed because it was plaintext. The allure of the Custom Field implementation was that I thought I could handle 100% of the encoding/decoding logic there, so that no other part of my code ever needed to know about it. What am I doing wrong? • Facebook iframe app redirecting https to http, how?

  I'm trying to get an app working within Facebook, but it seems that no matter what I try including forcing just https in the app settings (see screen shot), the iframe source (Facebooks canvas) seems to change the https address to http (301) which is then producing SEC7111: HTTPS security errors in IE? How can I create an instance of a json object locally for testing? It looks like my function is not working. Console.WriteLine(UnicodeString("????? ?????")) printing on console just questions like that: ????? ???? UPDATE Looks like the problem not in Unicode, I think may be it is displaying question marks because i am not having correct locale in the system (Windows 7)? In the cases where a client computer works normally, the only difference I can see is that the 3rd request for SSL resource comes back with a 200 response, see below: CONNECT gmail.google.com:443 HTTP/1.0 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0; MALC) Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 0 Host: gmail.google.com Pragma: no-cache Proxy-Authorization: NTLM TlRMTVNTUAADAAAAGAAYAIAAAA A SSLv3-compatible ClientHello handshake was found. I have tried resetting user accounts as well as computer accounts in Active Directory. User accounts and passwords that are being used are correct and the passwords have been reset so they are not out of sync. I have removed the clients and even the proxy server from the domain, and rejoined them. I have installed a complete separate proxy server and get exactly the same problem when I point clients to a different proxy server on a different IP address.

• Connecting PC to TV via HDMI/DVI: Windows XP doesn't allow the appropriate screen resolution

  I have a computer that is connected to the living room TV (a Panasonic) via HDMI. There is no other monitor connected. My problem is that the computer, which is running Windows XP, does not allow me to set the proper resolution for the TV. Both the graphics adapter and the TV should support the 1280x720 resolution, but it cannot be selected - the only available options are 1280x600 and 800x600, both in the "native" Windows dialog box and the custom Intel graphics options dialog box. Do anyone have a suggestion for a solution for this? Things I've thought of: Setting the resolution directly in the registry (where?) Installing some "custom" monitor driver (the TV manufacturer does not appear to provide any, currently the "generic" one is used) Details on the setup: Connection: DVI output on the computer via a passive DVI-HDMI adapter to the HDMI input on the TV, audio is run on a separate link, the TV is able to combine video and audio without any problem, the problem is there regardless of whether or not the audio is connected. The connection is several meters long through some walls, for this reason using a VGA cable instead is not an option. Note that the report explicitly says that the TV supports 1280x720. Still, I am not allowed to select it in Graphics Options, only 1280x600 and 800x600 is available. For 800x600, there's a lot of black around the edges; for 1280x600, the screen is "zoomed" so the edges of the monitor image (like the taskbar) is not visible. Other: The computer is running Windows XP. More recent versions of Windows are not an option (I have no licence). Linux is probably not an option (some of the video streaming sites I plan to use do not support it, I think) I wrote the rest of the details below. Thanks for any help!! Security tool uncovers multiple bugs in every browser Michal Zalewski reports that he discovered the vulnerability in Internet Explorer a while ago using his cross_fuzz fuzzing tool and reported it to Microsoft in July 2010. Zalewski also used cross_fuzz to discover bugs in other browsers, which he also reported to the relevant organisations. Microsoft to fix Windows holes, but not ones in IE Microsoft said that it will release two security bulletins next week fixing three holes in Windows, but it is still investigating or working on fixing holes in Internet Explorer that have been reportedly exploited in attacks. Microsoft warns of Windows flaw affecting image rendering Microsoft has warned of a Windows vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if the user is logged on with administrative rights. Windows 7 Not Affected by Critical 0-Day in the Windows Graphics Rendering Engine While confirming that details on a Critical zero-day vulnerability have made their way into the wild, Microsoft noted that customers running the latest iteration of Windows client and server platforms are not exposed to any risks. • How To Rip a Music CD in Windows 7 Media Center

  If you’re a Media Center user, you already know that it can play and manage your digital music collection. But, did you know you can also rip a music CD in Windows 7 Media Center and have it automatically added to your music library? Rip a CD in Windows 7 Media Center Place your CD into your optical drive. From within Windows Media Center, open the Music Library and select the CD. If you haven’t previously ripped a CD in Windows 7 with either Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player, you’ll be prompted to select whether or not you’d like to add copy protection. Click Next. By default, your CD will be ripped to .WMA format. The rip settings for Windows Media Center are pulled from Windows Media Player. So to change the rip settings, we’ll need to do so in Media Player. Click Finish. From within Windows Media Player, click on Tools from Menu bar, and select Options. If you are new to Windows Media Player 12, check out our beginner’s guide on how to manage your music with WMP 12. Select the Rip Music tab and choose your output format from the Format drop down list. You can also select the Audio quality (bit rate) by moving the slider bar under Audio quality. Click OK when you are finished.   Now, you are ready to rip your CD. Click on Rip CD. Click Yes to confirm you want to rip the CD. You can follow the progress as each track is being converted.    When the CD is finished you’re ready to start enjoying your music any time you wish in Windows 7 Media Center.
