• Making of Amar Chitra Katha Comics – Behind The Scenes

  Couple of days ago there was a book fair at our work place and found very interesting comic books for children in a crowded stall. The comic are mostly based on Indian mythologies, historians and the legends who inspired the generations. By flicking couple of book pages I fell in love with them and decided that my next gifts I’m going to buy for kids is going to be one of these comic books. After speaking to the sales men, I came to know that these comic books are very popular in among the kids and elders by the name, Amar Chitra Katha. I found myself ashamed of being ignorant about these popular books and started doing a bit of research. The Amar Chitra Katha comics is started in 1967 by Anant Pai, who was recently honoured by Google India with a doodle. The comic books are published in 20 Indian languages, 440+ titles are released so far and over a million copies are sold since the inception. • Ubuntu one, music streaming

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10, and just signed up for Ubuntu One and Ubuntu One Music. Generally file sync is working fine, but music has been a complete failure so far. Here's what I'm looking at: After 24 hours, not a single mp3 or ogg file from my laptop has sync'd to the Cloud Music folder. I have 4 gigs of data used, which is definitely not enough to include music files. That's about the right amount for my docs and photos. With music, it should be more like 13 gigs. No music shows up on the Ubuntu One Music app on my phone, nor on the web view of my Ubuntu One Cloud folder I followed all the online instructions I could find. Basically, on my laptop, right click on the Music folder and select "Ubuntu One Synchronize this folder" The Music folder now has a green check mark on it indicating its sync'd The Ubuntu One app on my laptop says "File Sync is up to date" I did provide credit card information, and on the Ubuntu One website "Music Streaming" is listed as one of my services. So what am I doing wrong? Just read this post as I'm experiencing the same problem, the answer for this post says that due to the large number of files trying to be uploaded, that it could take up to a week. However I am, as above also being told that "File sync is up to date" Can somebody confirm that this is a bug and that I just need to wait for File sync to actually be up to date? Cheers

• MySQL Connect Conference: My Experience

  It was a great experience to attend the MySQL Connect Conference for the first time ever. Personally I was very much enthralled to present about "How to make MySQL Backups" besides attending different sessions to absorb more knowledge about the technical prospects of MySQL. One of the agenda items in my presentation was "MySQL Enterprise Backup" functionality and features. There were total of 40 attendees in the session, who were very much interested about the MySQL Enterprise Backup product and gave positive feedback as well as areas of improvements on our product. Some of our features brought lot of excitement and smile amongst our customers including,1. Performance improvements in MEB 3.8.02. Incremental Base option from MEB 3.7.1 where there is no need to specify the directory name of the previous backup to fetch the lsn values and instead can directly fetch from backup_history table using --incremental-base=history: last_backup3. only-innodb-with-frm option introduced in MEB 3.7 version. A true online hot backup of InnoDB tables.I also attended a session with similar topic "MEB Best Practices" conducted by Sanjay Manwani, where he double clicked all the features and best strategies of backup & restore. I also got an opportunity to attend other sessions including,* Enabling the new generation of web and cloud services with MySQL 5.6 replication* Getting the most out of MySQL with MySQL Workbench* InnoDB compression for OLTP* Scaling for the Web and Cloud with MySQL replication.Above all, had some special moments in the conference including meeting some of the executives / colleagues for the first time f2f. On a whole, the first MySQL Connect conference was a great success in terms of manifesting the features of our products, direct feedback from customer and team building.  We also had some applauding yahoo moments when Tomas Ulin announced different releases including MySQL 5.6 RC, Connector Python 1.0 and ODBC 5.2 release, MySQL Cluster 7.3, additions to MySQL Enterprise edition etc.

• Git-based storage and publishing, infrastructure advice

  I wanted to get some advice on moving a system to "the cloud" ... specifically, I'm looking to move into some of Windows Azure's managed services, as right now I'm managing a VM. Basically, the system operates on some data stored in a github git repository. I'll describe the current architecture: Current system (all hosted on a single server): GitHub - configured with a webhook pointing at ... ASP.NET MVC application - to accept the webhook from git. It pushes a message onto ... Azure service bus Queue - which is drained by ... Windows Service - pulls the message from the queue and ... Fetches the latest data from the git repository (using GitLib2Sharp) onto the local disk and finally ... Operates on the data in git to produce a static HTML website hosted/served by IIS. The system works really well, actually ... but I would like to get out of the business of managing the VM, and move to using some combination of Azure web and worker roles. But because the system relies so heavily on the git repository on the local filesystem, I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to architect in the cloud. I know you can get file system access, so in theory I could just fetch the repository if there's nothing on disk ... but the performance/responsiveness of the system sort of depends on the repository being available and only having to fetch diffs, which is relatively quick. As opposed to periodically having to fetch the entire (somewhat large) git repository if the web or worker role was recycled, or something. So I would love some advice on how you would architect such a system :) Ultimately, the only real requirement is to be able to serve HTML content that's been produced from the contents of a git repository (in a relatively responsive manner, from a publishing perspective) ... please feel free to ask any clarifying questions if there's something I omitted. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs. • Did you forget me?

  I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Explaining the difference between OData & RDF by way of analogy

  A couple of months back I wrote a blog post entitled Microsoft, OData and RDF where I gave a high level view of the OData protocol and how it compares to RDF. I talked about linked data, triples and such like which may have been somewhat useful however jargon-heavy. Earlier today Dr Michael Hausenblas (blog | twitter) offered an analogy which I think is probably more useful and with Michael's permission I'm re-posting it here:Imagine a Web (a Web of Documents, if you wish), which is not based on HTML and hyperlinks, but on MS Word documents. The documents are all available on the Internet, so you can download them and consume the content. But after you’re done with a certain document that talks about a book, how do you learn more about it? For example, reviews about the book or where you can purchase it? Maybe the original document mentions that there is some more related information on another server. So you’d need to go there and look for the related bit of information yourself. You see? That’s what the Web is great at – you just click on a hyperlink and it takes you to the document (or section) you’re interested in. All the legwork is taken care of for you through HTML, URIs and HTTP.Hm, right, but how is this related to OData? Well, OData feels a bit like the above mentioned scenario, just concerning data. • How to create a Semantic Network like wordnet based on Wikipedia?

  I am an undergraduate student and I have to create a Semantic Network based on Wikipedia. This Semantic Network would be similar to Wordnet(except for it is based on Wikipedia and is concerned with "streams of text/topics" rather than simple words etc.) and I am thinking of using the Wikipedia XML dumps for the purpose. I guess I need to learn parsing an XML and "some other things" related to NLP and probably Machine Learning, but I am no way sure about anything involved herein after the XML parsing. Is the starting step: XML dump parsing into text a good idea/step? Any alternatives? What would be the steps involved after parsing XML into text to create a functional Semantic Network? What are the things/concepts I should learn in order to do them? I am not directly asking for book recommendations, but if you have read a book/article that teaches any thing related/helpful, please mention them. This may include a refernce to already existing implementations regarding the subject. Please correct me if I was wrong somewhere. Thanks!

• Good resources for learning Rails?

  I just finished working through Peter Cooper's "Beginning Ruby". So now I've got a reasonable grounding in the Ruby language and would like to move onto learning Rails. This question's answers give some good pointers, but I'd like to hear some specific reviews of books and online materials. I generally learn best by working through books with good practical/technical examples AND some passive reading content that breaks up the study between practical and reading sessions (this is what made "Beginning Ruby" great for me), but I'm worried that RoR is evolving fast and that any printed book I order might be obsolete by the time I get it and work through it. Is this a fair worry? Or can anyone recommend a good Rails 3 book that should be up to date at least for the next year or so? Also, I had a brief look at some of the online resources from the other questions, and Rails for Zombies seems to get a lot of praise. Has anyone here actually used it as their introductory guide to Rails? Basically I'd like to hear first-hand accounts of people who went through this "Ruby-to-Rails" learning phase recently and which materials were useful to you.
