  Hi I've searched some other posts, but most of them assumed that people knew what they were doing in their unit testing, and frankly I don't. I see the idea behind unit testing, and I'm coding an silverlight application much in the blind right now, and I'd like to write some unit tests to kind of be sure I'm on the right path. I'd like to be able to use the SL4 vs 2010 silverlight unit test project template, to keep it simple and not use external tools. So what I need an answer for are questions like: what are the methods of unit testing? what are the differences between unit tests, and automated unit tests? How do I meaningfully unit test in silverlight? What should I be aware of while unit testing (in silverlight) ? Also should I implement some kind of IRepository pattern in my silverlight app to make unit testing easier?

• Using Java server-side with PHP front-end

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

• Calculate an Internet (aka IP, aka RFC791) checksum in C#

  Interestingly, I can find implementations for the Internet Checksum in almost every language except C#. Does anyone have an implementation to share? Remember, the internet protocol specifies that: "The checksum field is the 16 bit one's complement of the one's complement sum of all 16 bit words in the header. For purposes of computing the checksum, the value of the checksum field is zero." More explanation can be found from Dr. Math. There are some efficiency pointers available, but that's not really a large concern for me at this point. Please include your tests! (Edit: Valid comment regarding testing someone else's code - but I am going off of the protocol and don't have test vectors of my own and would rather unit test it than put into production to see if it matches what is currently being used! ;-) Edit: Here are some unit tests that I came up with. They test an extension method which iterates through the entire byte collection. Please comment if you find fault in the tests. • How extensible should code actually be?

  I've just started a new job and one of the things my new boss talked to me about was code longevity. I've always coded to make my code infinently extensible and adaptable. I figured that if someone was going to change my code in the future then it should be easy to do. But I never really had a clear idea on how far into the future that should be. So my new boss told me not to bother coding for anything more that 3 years into the future and his reasoning was that technology changes, programs expire etc. At first I was kinda taken aback and thought he was a whack job but the longer I think about it the more I'm warming to the concept. Does anyone else have an opinion on how far into the future you should code to?

• Yet another php ereg fix

  I have a small chunk of coding I need to take from ereg to preg_match. Here is the code. function be_file_list($d, $x) { foreach (array_diff(scandir($d), array('.', '..')) as $f) { if (is_file($d . '/' . $f) && (($x) ? ereg($x.'$',$f) : 1)) { $l[] = $f; } } return $l; } This code works as expected even if it doesn't look too pretty (source: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.scandir.php) but as ereg is deprecated, I would really like to make it preg_match, or something like that. I have been messing with this all afternoon and the PC is about to go out the window. I would have thought that preg_match("/"$x.'$',$f"/") would have worked but no dice. Any help would be great. It would be helpful if the book covered: The software development process (requirements, design, coding, testing, maintenance) Testing roles (who performs each step in the process) Testing methods (white box and black box) Testing levels (unit testing, integration testing, etc) Testing process (Agile, waterfall, spiral) Testing tools (simulators, fixtures, and reporting software) Testing of embedded systems The goal here is to find an easy to read book that summarizes the best practices for ensuring software quality in an embedded system. It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

• Exiting from the Middle of an Expression Without Using Exceptions

  Is there a way to emulate the use of flow-control constructs in the middle of an expression? Is it possible, in a comma-delimited expression x, y, for y to cause a return? Edit: I'm working on a compiler for something rather similar to a functional language, and the target language is C++. Everything is an expression in the source language, and the sanest, simplest translation to the destination language leaves as many things expressions as possible. Basically, semicolons in the target language become C++ commas. In-language flow-control constructs have presented no problems thus far; it's only return. I just need a way to prematurely exit a comma-delimited expression, and I'd prefer not to use exceptions unless someone can show me that they don't have excessive overhead in this situation. The problem of course is that most flow-control constructs are not legal expressions in C++. The only solution I've found so far is something like this: try { return x(), // x(); (1 ? throw Return(0) : 0); // return 0; } catch (Return& ret) { return ref.value; } The return statement is always there (in the event that a Return construct is not reached), and as such the throw has to be wrapped in ?: to get the compiler to shut up about its void result being used in an expression. I would really like to avoid using exceptions for flow control, unless in this case it can be shown that no particular overhead is incurred; does throwing an exception cause unwinding or anything here? This code needs to run with reasonable efficiency. I just need a function-level equivalent of exit().

  I've got an AJAX transmission of a variable string in my primary coding language (Visual FoxPro 9) that looks like this: AjaxResponse = CREATEOBJECT("Custom") lcMessage = "<li class='hello'>Hello</li>" AjaxResponse.AddProperty("Reply", lcMessage) Response.ContentType = "text/html" Response.Write(AjaxResponse.Reply) While using the jQuery function .ajax() I've created a success: function that looks like this: $.ajax({ url: 'index?Proc=GetUuserHistory', dataType: "html", success: function(data){ $("div#history-text").text(data); }; }); My problem is that the text inserting into 'div#history-text' is unformatted and contains the li tags still. I've tried substituting the .text for .prepend, .append, and .html with no luck...is there a way to convert this string back to html format after its been received using Ajax?

• HOWTO: Deserialize WCF message using OperationContract

  Hi, I succeeded in building a WCF client generated by svcutil.exe from the WSDL. Using the generated client proxy class I can call the web service of an external service supplier. I also succeeded in coding a message inspector, as I need to log both raw XML request and response as full SOAP message to the database. For an emergency szenario I also need to be able to "import" a raw XML response. I found many hints on using XMLSerializer or deserializing WCF messages based on the message contract. But how can I deserialize a raw XML response based on an operation contract? For a first test I use one of the logged raw responses, save it to a file and now try to deserialize it to the response type as generated in the client proxy. Somehow I must succeed in calling DeserializeReply() from class ClientOperation. But how to get there? I happily acced any help as I'm quite new to WCF... TIA, Stefan

• Longest keyword chain?

  As I was typing some constants in Java I noticed I had used 4 keywords in a row, which Eclipse highlighted for me: public static final int. I then took a break from my regular coding and asked myself (and google with no relevant results) what the longest chain of keywords I can use and still have valid code. After a while, the best I could come up with was this method definition: public synchronized static final strictfp int a() { ... which is 6 keywords in Java. Is it possible to go 7, or even higher? What about other languages?

  Hi all, I have used wmd-editor in my cakephp v1.3 application. I'm mostly thinking about the constraint to "itself". I sometimes feel like generics can "explode" to other classes where I use the Base class.

• Should I be so enthusiastic about Groovy?

  I'm currently working on my project which consists of front and back-end written in PHP and desktop app written in Java, and that's what the plan was before I discovered Groovy and later on Grails. Now after rewriting my desktop client and sketching some back-end functionality in Groovy I'm considering to drop PHP altogether in favor of Groovy (although I haven't played around with Grails yet.) For me it just looks like coding in Groovy is as simple as in PHP, but with lots of extra sugar and awesomeness of Java libraries. Comparing those two may sound awkward, but hey I'm an amateur ;) Finally to my question, from the looks of it most of the articles/blog posts about Groovy I can find is awfully outdated. Am I missing some reason why it's not so popular and which will crush my enthusiasm to bits? :D

• How to do relative imports in Python?

  Imagine this directory structure: app/ __init__.py sub1/ __init__.py mod1.py sub2/ __init__.py mod2.py I'm coding mod1, and I need to import something from mod2. How should I do it? I tried from ..sub2 import mod2 but I'm getting an "Attempted relative import in non-package". I googled around but found only "sys.path manipulation" hacks. Isn't there a clean way? Edit: all my __init__.py's are currently empty Edit2: I'm trying to do this because sub2 contains classes that are shared across sub packages (sub1, subX, etc.). Edit3: The behaviour I'm looking for is the same as described in PEP 366 (thanks John B)

• Are all the system's floating points operations the same?

  We're making this web app in PHP and when working in the reports we have Excel files to compare our results to make sure our coding is doing the right operations. Now we're running into some differences due floating point arithmetics. We're doing the same divisions and multiplications and running into slightly different numbers, that add up to a notable difference. My question is if Excel is delegating it's floating point arithmetic to the CPU and PHP is also relying in the CPU for it's operations. Or does each application implements its own set of math algorithms?

  Sometimes, I came across certain web development framework which doesn't provide authentication feature as in Authenication ASP.NET I was wondering what is the security measure needs to be considered, when implementing "Remember Me" login feature, by hand coding? Here are the things I usually did. 1) Store the user name in cookie. The user name are not encrypted. 2) Store a secret key in cookie. The secret key is generated using one way function based on user name. The server will verify secret key against user name, to ensure this user name is not being changed. 3) Use HttpOnly in cookie. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/08/protecting-your-cookies-httponly.html Any things else I could miss out, which could possible lead a security hole.

  I have a Websphere 6.1 EAR that I am trying to deploy and I am currently getting the following message when I add javassist-3.4.GA.jar to the EAR. Facet version for Enterprise Application project IntegrationEARProject must be 5.0 to contain Java EE 5.0 project lib //{path to file}/hibernate/R3_3_1/jars/javassist-3.4.GA.jar. Currently the Project Facets are set as folows: EAR version is 1.4 Websphere version is 6.1 Please note that we do not have any of the feature packs installed currently and I do not have the option to install the feature packs. Is there anything that can be done to get around this issue? I am coding using java 1.5. Thank you very much.

• Change panel "visible" property on MasterPage from Child pages

  I want to show some panel with a label that is located on a MasterPage from inside it's child pages.. I already did the coding on the MasterPage: public class MyMaster : MasterPage { public void ShowPanel(string pMessage) { labelInside.Text = pMessage; myPanel.visible = true; } } Then I make the calls from child pages: public void ShowPanel(string pMessage) { MyMaster masterPage = this.Master as MyMaster; masterPage.ShowPanel(pMessage); } This "works" ok, but it won't show nothing, since I need the page to be "refreshed" in an "ajax-way" like an UpdatePanel, which I can't use because the Trigger is in another page, right? I really need this to work.. even if you have another completely different way to do this, I would appreciate.
