• How do I make a Windows virtual machine replicate to another datacenter/cloud?

  We have a Windows 2008 VM running IIS and SQL Server Express (it's an all-in-one web application). We need to have another copy at our secondary datacenter site. What is the best way to do this? It doesn't have to be running all the time but it has to have almost the latest copy of the current VM. I took a look at VMWare Fault Tolerance and after the heart attack at the price I starting looking for another solution. If need be I wouldn't mind copying it over to a cloud VM provider, if I can find one that lets me copy my own VMs up and start them up without any conversion process.

  I ran this command on the server that has the share of code that my local IIS site set to (Via UNC to that share): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320268 Drive:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\caspol.exe -m -ag 1 -url "file:////\\computername\sharename\*" FullTrust -exclusive on (obviously I replaced Drive with C, and the actual computername and sharename with the one I'm sharing out). But when I run the ASP.NET site, I am still getting this runtime exception: Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. • Why can't I access my website with domain? It works with IP address only

  In the past we didn't have a proper domain name for our site, now I have registered a proper domain name, but now I experiance the following problem: If I go to https://46.144.46.214/ita I can access the portal without any problem; If I go to https://ita.telvent-netherlands.com/ita I receive a time-out in Internet Explorer. But if I go to https://ita.telvent-netherlands.com/ I see that I reach the IIS server so the DNS is working. Do you know how it is possible that I can reach it by IP and not by name? I need to reach it by domain. Thank you in advance.

  I scrutinized every single article that there is on the web for this one but NO JOY! I am getting the infamous error 500 after that I have installed internet explorer 9. Here is a detailed step of what I had done.... STEP 1 - Installed PHP using Web Platform installer , IIS 7 on Windows 7 x64 STEP 2 - Configured PHP.ini to display_errors so I turned that on STEP 3 - With IE8 EVERYTHING was showing up fine .... STEP 4 - When I installed IE9 .... the error 500 message came back STEP 5 - Looked into php.ini and my original settings are all still there STEP 6 - reset iis7 with iisrestart from command prompt.... • Can a webite have too many bindings?

  IIS7.x on a win08 web version on a dedicated server. I have a site that's serving a few dozen affiliates - many of which are hitting me via a subdomain from their own root domain - all of which have a subdomain specific to their account. E.G. my affiliate named 'Acme' hits my site via: myApp.Acme.com (his root, my app) Acme.MyDomain.com (his account within my root domain) Currently I'm adding each of these as a binding entry in IIS (targeting a discrete IP, not '*'). As I ramp this up to include more affiliates I'm wondering if I should be concerned about how many binding this site handles. Proabaly, in Acme's case I can do without the 'Acme.MyDomain.com' because, in reality, all traffic takes place via myApp.Acme.com. Mine is a niche site - very volume compared to most. At what point do I worry about all those bindings? thx

  I am using the server admin tool for the web and see where I can create sites with the +. I thought that was creating virtual directory but it doesn't seem to be. I need a site that uses port 80 but is like http://myserver/myvirtual instead of http://myserver which is what this one with the + does. how do I make a virtual directory with the tool like in IIS? • Use Port Binding Permissions on Windows

  This should be an easy one, but I can't find anything on it. I want to use IIS Express with my local user account to bind to a port on my netbios name. For example, http://computername:1315. My local user account doesn't have permission to do this, but I have administrator access on the machine. Anyone know how to grant permission to my local user account to bind to a port with my computer name instead of localhost? This is on Windows 7.

  Since a little time I can't use Exchange Management Console on an exchange 2007 server because of a message which tell me that get-ExchangeServer return that active directory of my server is available. • Hyper-V shutdown/start up host causing issues in VMs

  I have a single physical host, running 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, all fully updated. On that host I am running 3 clients, a DC, a web server and a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. All are running on Windows Server 2008 R2, again all fully patched. Generally all is fine, but sometimes and not repeatably, when I shutdown the host properly, which suspends the Clients, when it all comes up again, SQL Server is no longer running and the IIS App Pool I am running the website in needs to be told which account to run in again! Any ideas!?

  Thus far we've been using the combination of Forefront TMG 2010 as an edge firewall + intrusion prevention system + web site publishing mechanism in the data center to work with a few web server machines. Since we develop on ASP.NET, we are IIS and in general - Microsoft crowd. Since TMG is being deprecated, we need to come up with a hardware alternative to protect and serve our data center web cloud. Could you please advise a hardware or virtual appliance solution that can provide routing, flood prevention and smart web-site publishing (one IP - many web sites based on domain name filter) all in one. Even if it is hard to configure, as long as it covers all these features, we will invest to learn and replace TMG eventually.

  I have been using IIS7.5 Since its release. I am also using commerce server 2007sp2. Due to Commerce Servers Need for memory and processor I have the app pool the website is assigned to recycling at midnight every night. My Question is what is the best time table to recycle heavy web app pools? I am looking to keep speed and not bump potential customers while recycling multiple times a day if possible. Another issue is that every few days the same app pool will hang and I have to force a reset of IIS to get it working again.

We have an externally facing Apache proxy server that is responsible for directing all traffic into our environment. It is also doing the SSL work for the majority of our servers. There are one or two IIS servers in particular that are doing their own SSL, but they are also behind the proxy. I'm wondering, is SSL to the proxy good enough? It would mean that traffic within our network is identifiable, but is that such a big deal?

• Is there any danger in disabling windows firewall on a azure worker role?

  I'm trying to troubleshoot a bug on our Azure worker role where we occasionally get the error "Unable to read data from the transport connection: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine". This error occurs when we are connecting to outside resources like google auth servers. A few people have recommended disabling the firewall\antivirus on the server. I'm just wondering what kind of security risk we would take by doing this. The server doesn't have iis installed but would it be vulnerable to hacking without the firewall? Thanks

  Right now I'm running Windows Server 2003 on a VPS with 640mb RAM and it works fine. I would like to upgrade OS to Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I understand that it is difficult to say how much RAM is needed, but can you make a comparison between 2003 and the two new 2008 versions? RAM on VPS is by far the most expensive item, so I wonder if I can get similar performances with 1GB and 2008 or 2008R2 compared to 640MB and 2003. Basically I run IIS, SQL Server and MailEnable.

  Hi, I have a web application written by asp.net (c#) sql server 2005. we host it on 2 dedicated server ( IIS and SQL server ) From some month ago , in some days of week we have many reports about speed issue. we have some other application on this server using same database. when we have speed problem all aplication on these server have this problem, but applications on other server in same data center work correctly. ram and cpu usage are ok. how can I check that the problem related to internet connection or my application design? which parameters must be checked. Some other information In applications users can upload several files to server , each file up to 3 MB. we use a sql web admin application, on same server that has same problem, this is a standard application which work perfectly on other servers. • so i installed sql server now how do i connect to it?

  SO i have a server running windows server 2008 r2 and i just installed Microsoft sql server 2008. I used the manager thing to create the database and the tables, etc and now i want to connect to it via my visual studio which is on a different machine. so how do i do that? do i need to "turn on" the sql server, do i need to do port forwarding? do i have to modify the iis or change those settings? is there a good article someone can me point me to? just to further help you help me, i understand how to connect to a datasource in visual studio my problem is more with the sql server and understanding how to properly set it up once installed. Sorry for the noob question, i got it all installed and i know how to use it once its all going i just don't know the in-between. thanks in advance dave

• php crashes when I try to add extensions

  Hi all, I am trying to install phpmyadmin on my web server with Windows 2008 and iis 7. PHP is running fine and I have several sites that rely on it. When installing phpmyadmin - it has errors at the bottom that crypt and mbstring are not properly installed. When I try to add the php_mcrypt.dll and/or the php_mbstring.dll to the php.ini file (I verified the location and the right file through phpinfo) it crashes. I get a 500 error on all the websites, and I get an error on the server saying FastCGI has failed. Does anyone know how to fix this or why it is happening? Shouldn't I be able to add extenstions? I have the dll files in the extension folder, which is referenced in the php.ini and other extensions (installed previously) are working as expected. Other info: php version 5.2.8, pdo driver for mysql version 5.0.51a Thanks in advance!

  I am trying to follow the instructions in this article to create a custom certificate to support SSL on a web server. I'm stick on the following step: Click on Personal – All Tasks – Advanced Operations – Create Custom request The problem is that on the web server (Windows Server 2003 R2) I don't have an "Advanced Operations" option under "All Tasks". I do on my desktop machine (Windows 7), but not on the server. All the documentation I can find indicates that it should be available on WS-2003-R2, but it just isn't. Note: I'm going through this manual process because I need to specify a alternate host names in the CSR, which you can't do through the IIS 6.0 console certificate managment functionality. Any suggestions for how to make this option show up?

  I'm looking for a software tool/service, preferably opensource/free, which will run on a Windows 2003 r3 standard server which will monitor bandwidth usage of all the websites it's hosting (a break down by site would be very useful) and also send out notifications if IIS or another service (as defined) stops responding. A web interface to see the bandwidth usage and other details would be very useful. I've personally got a vps which does this kinda of monitoring but I believe this is more linked into the host itself. Does anyone have any pointers? All help is appriciated. Cheers

  I have 64-bit WSS 3.0 installed on a 64-bit Windows 2003 Server. After installing WSS 3.0 I switched IIS to run in 32-bit emulation mode as we have some applications that require this. I'm getting a "Cannot connect to the configuration database" trying to get to the Central Admin page and wondered if: a. The setup I have won't work and I'm wasting my time trying to figure this out. or b. If anyone has any suggestions for resolving the database connection issue? The identity of the app pool that WSS runs under has all the required permissions in SQL so far as I can tell. Any help would be appreciated!

  I'm currently in the process of setting up a SharePoint 2010 farm. In my Dev Environments, I have one account that is Local Admin, Farm Administrator and runs all Application Pools. For Production Environment, I would like to go with best Security Practices and run the Web Applications (At least 2: Main Portal and My Sites) with separate Domain Accounts. It's been some time that I worked with IIS, and I remember that there were issues with accessing files in c:\inetpub by non-Admin users. On the other hand, SharePoint "automagically" sets most permissions anyway. Does anyone have some experience with which permissions I need to give to the domain account at minimum in order to work?

• How do I elevate privileges when running appcmd from a nant task?

  We are using a Windows 7 box as build server. As part of our continuous integration process I would like to stop and start an IIS 7 website. I have tried doing this from the command line using appcmd: appcmd start site "my website" However, this only works if I start the console window by choosing "Run as Administrator", so it won't work out-of-the-box from NAnt etc. How do I script appcmd to be run with elevated privileges (or am I going about this in the wrong way)?
