• Whats the right program for me?

  I would like to learn C++ so I can get a job in the game industry, but there are so many options it a little confusing. I know most of you will say I should read up on C++ before attempting to program it but I learn best by doing things rather then reading. That being said I don't understand some of the thing suggested on other questions, because I've read a few trying to find whats right for me, so putting things in the simplest terms would be helpful. I've been making a couple of games 2d using gamemaker and if theres a C++ equivalent that would be perfect, but if not possible I would like an IDE that allows me to easily continue making 2d games, and is fairly simple to learn. Having a 2d sprite editor would be a nice plus but I can understand if its not every thing I want in one program

  Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems.   Hello I'm trying to make some kind of tool for an school website, what I need to do is to make students take a test and according to what are the results (27 posibilities) they get a set of activities (questions) according to their level which they can solve in around 3 months logging periodically to the website, plus I need teachers to log and look at the reports. Now, I'm a graphic designer myself so my skills are mostly html5 and css3 and I know some php (edit existing ones only) and javascript (jquery) as well, most people tell me that I need a CMS to do the tool but all I find is CMS for display like blogs or news websites which I think aren't useful for me because the website is already made in html and css3 only (I need to add an extra page for the tool) I understand I need to create users and give them special rights according to what type of user they are and I also understand that I need a database where I can store all my questions. What is the best way to do this? what do you suggest me? Thanks

• Business Analyst vs. Architect [closed]

  I'm a developer of a few years in the financial industry and will soon need to decide what career path to try and row towards. Broadly speaking I have two options: something more 'people' oriented like BAs, or keep coding and try to make more technical decisions like the Architects do where I currently work. Here are my perceptions right now: Business Analysts: get paid way more than devs once they do their job, it seems like they usually have no worries more likely to go REALLY high up in the organization (VPs, etc) Architects: things like certification matters (I see this as a con) called in when things go wrong more than anyone else (weekends & overtime) long career path to get to (dev - senior dev - team lead - architect) I would find the latter more intellectually rewarding, but when I look at it I just can't justify it in terms of lifestyle. Am I wrong / what am I missing? Can you really make a lot of money in a technical role or must you really get out of coding? Thank you for any constructive input.

• HP Envy - HDMI / Mini-display-port not working

  I saw that many of HP envy users (and some other hardwares) are having problems while using Ubuntu (some other distributions too). PROBLEM My main issue is make my HDMI or Mini-display-port work on Linux (Ubuntu). I`m able to make it work smoothly on windows only :( TIP Some guy create a blog, that is very nice and I could found some helps over there. But is kind of abandoned. General Purpose The idea of this post is to put together all users and share though under this issue. Thanks in advance for any reply/comment. UPDATE1: Looking THIS comment I could start to see something at the end of the road! I will wait for some reply on this. If I have more news I`ll update this post!

  How important is the knowledge of a language versus the games that you have developed in your portfolio? To be more specific. Personally, I dislike C++ for several reason(mainly due to it's complexity, and pointers, and I prefer D as my language of choice thus far. Due to this, I've written two games in D instead of C++ that are my personal projects. Am I wasting my time with D? Should I start using C++ again? For reference, I have 6 months of experience in C++. It's the first language I learned. I have messed around with SDL/SFML and a bit of Direct3D with C++ as well. Even though I like D, i'd rather not waste my time learning it, if it in no way will help me get a job in the gaming industry.

  We have to write an administration panel for many customers. But we want to have just one administration panel, and use it in various projects. This admin panel will have basic components such as access control logic, maker-checker system in changes, user logging and etc. It will also have reporting for the customer, logs of transaction of the customer (which can vary according to the industry such as mobile banking, banking, ticket sales). These components may have to be modified according to the business. So we are thinking about the architecture here, Is it OK to use jars of every basic components, and bring them together on a glue application? Or should we build each component as WARs and make interfaces between them? If there are any more ideas, it will be appreciated.

  I'm just putting together an internal data system for a client, which is ASP.NET VB, backed by an SQL database, on an in-house IIS7.5 dedicated server. I want to store certain global settings, such as the age limit for news articles, admin contacts etc, in a file NOT within the database (i.e. to avoid unnecessary database query's) Where would the best place to store this be? global.asax? app.config? or a custom XML file? how would i import these at runtime? (probably to session variables) ETA: Also - the settings must be editable from within the site, i.e. an admin section i'm yet to build

  I usually see two job titles in the IT industry. My understanding of their most commonly accepted usage (simplified): Business Analyst: Main role is eliciting the users' needs Software Developer Main role is to design, build and test a software solution answering the needs I'm wondering: "How we should call somebody whose role is to do both of the roles above?" Is this a common job title? And is trying to find people with these broadness of skills realistic, difficult? EDIT: I'm specifically interested to name Lead Software Developers who have eventually learned and can apply techniques of Business Analysis.
