• Conditional directive to identify C++ Builder personalities

  Hello, I have a Delphi component which I want to install and have it available at the component palette in Delphi but not in C++ Builder. In BDS/RAD 2006 and above I can either have it installed for both personalities or none. I need to do so because this component uses 3rd party libraries that doesn't support C++ Builder. I have looked at jedi.inc mentioned here but I'm not able to find the combination to be able to register the component in Delphi personalities only. The component should also work for D5, D6 and D7 but not for BCB5 and BCB6. Is this possible? BTW: Component is written in Delphi. C++ Builder shares same packages as Delphi. Thanks in advance.

• C++: FFMPEG and SDL resources

  I'm looking for resources (preferably books, but websites are fine too) for using FFMPEG and/or SDL with C++. Stuff I'd like to be able to do (eventually): Decode and play videos in realtime to a QT widget (the QT part isn't a problem) Overlay text and images on the video (in realtime) Loop video Cross-fade from one video to another (in realtime) Some kind of DVD functionality LIVE sources? (i.e. webcam, stream, etc.) So far I've looked at (and consider helpful) the following resources: FFMPEG and SDL Tutorial by Dranger (extremely helpful) StackOverflow: ffmpeg C API documentation/tutorial (not a duplicate, btw) Sample code bundled with FFMPEG libraries (I'll try and update this list with anything helpful below) Thanks for any help... Also: Operating System is Windows (but maybe one day cross-platform) Also 2: Resources using alternatives are welcome too... i.e. DirectShow, VFW, etc.

• Understanding CGI and SQL security from the ground up

  This question is for learning purposes. Suppose I am writing a simple SQL admin console using CGI and Python. At http://something.com/admin, this admin console should allow me to modify a SQL database (i.e., create and modify tables, and create and modify records) using an ordinary form. In the least secure case, anybody can access http://something.com/admin and modify the database. You can password protect http://something.com/admin. But once you start using the admin console, information is still transmitted in plain text. So then you use HTTPS to secure the transmitted data. Questions: To describe to a learner, how would you incrementally add security to the least secure environment in order to make it most secure? How would you modify/augment my three (possibly erroneous) steps above? What basic tools in Python make your steps possible? Optional: Now that I understand the process, how do sophisticated libraries and frameworks inherently achieve this level of security?

• Is there a way to show a 3-D surface plot in the browser?

  I've got a bunch of data for 3-D surface plots. I want to build a quick web interface to let me browse through that data. Are there any (free) packages out there that can easily show surface plots? I found this question but the suggested libraries did not support surface plots. If it requires a plugin like flash / java that is fine. This is for prototyping so a quick 'n dirty solution is preferred. Right now, the only option I have come up with is to use gnuplot to serve up static images. It would be awesome if there was some way to provide an interactive 3-D surface plot in the browser.

• iPhone / Android: what protocol stacks do apps use for connecting to centralised services?

  Hi All, Aplogies for the ignorant question, I have no experience with app development on any mobile platform. Basically what I want to know is what communication protocols do apps typically use for accessing/querying centralised services? E.g if I port a webapp/service to iPhone/Andriod, typically how would I access/query this web service in my app? E.g is it over HTTP, or are there other protocols? Also, presumably the GUI of an app is constructed with Apple/Andriod GUI libraries (in java? cocoa?). Can an app GUI be defined with HTML/javascript like a webpage? • Reading PDF metadata in PHP

  I'm trying to read metadata attached to arbitrary PDFs: title, author, subject, and keywords. Is there a PHP library, preferably open-source, that can read PDF metadata? If so, or if there isn't, how would one use the library (or lack thereof) to extract the metadata? To be clear, I'm not interested in creating or modifying PDFs or their metadata, and I don't care about the PDF bodies. I've looked at a number of libraries, including FPDF (which everyone seems to recommend), but it appears only to be for PDF creation, not metadata extraction.

• 'SHA1' is deprecated: first deprecated in OS X 10.7?

  So I was trying to compile a code which has a SHA1 function .. I included following header: #include <openssl/sha.h> And I got the following error while compiling: test.c:9:5: error: 'SHA1' is deprecated: first deprecated in OS X 10.7 [-Werror,-Wdeprecated-declarations] SHA1(msg, strlen(msg), hs); ^ But man pages still have the descriptions for that function. Can anyone suggest any other header for a similar function ( MD5 or SHA1 )? PS - also do I need to link any libraries while compiling using gcc?

• Significance of date 02/31/2157?

  I work in a large scale IT support environment. Twice now we have seen an invalid date of 02/31/2157 being inserted in an Oracle DATE column. So far I have not been able to reproduce this problem, but it appears to be happening occasionally when a user attempts to save '00/00/0000' into the column. I believe the value is originating from a PowerBuilder DataWindow update. The application uses myriad libraries for all sorts of technologies, so this question may be a bit vague, but... Has anyone seen the date 02/31/2157 in some established library that Oracle could be defaulting to when some other invalid date is entered? Perhaps an end-of-time concept analogous to the beginning-of-time date of 1/1/1970?

• Porting library from Java to Python

  I'm about to port a smallish library from Java to Python and wanted some advice (smallish ~ a few thousand lines of code). I've studied the Java code a little, and noticed some design patterns that are common in both languages. However, there were definitely some Java-only idioms (singletons, etc) present that are generally not-well-received in Python-world. I know at least one tool (j2py) exists that will turn a .java file into a .py file by walking the AST. Some initial experimentation yielded less than favorable results. Should I even be considering using an automated tool to generate some code, or are the languages different enough that any tool would create enough re-work to have justified writing from scratch? If tools aren't the devil, are there any besides j2py that can at least handle same-project import management? I don't expect any tool to match 3rd party libraries from one language to a substitute in another.

• Advice for building a browser-based audio mixer up to 32 tracks

  As a personal hobby I am looking to build an online audio mixer where I can upload individual instrument tracks, control individual volumes of each track, and export the mixed down version. I've been trying (and have come pretty close) with javascript. I really would like to stay away from flash if possible, but I'm really looking for suggestions for technologies to try. If anyone has any suggestions on languages that are good at stuff like this or libraries that I am missing, please let me know! • Structure of open source project's repository

  I'm in the beginning of starting a small open source project. When cloning the main repository one gets a complete build environment with all the libraries and all the tools needed to make an official installer file, with correct version numbers. I like the fact that anyone who wants to contribute can clone the repository and get started with anything they want. But I'm thinking this makes it to easy for Evil People to create malicious installers and release into the wild. How should it be structured? What do you recommend including in the repository, versus keeping on the build server only?

We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions.   I have a voice application that would be much-improved if there was the ability to use a "trigger word" to start recording audio. I don't need a full speech-text engine, just the ability to reliably/efficiently detect the trigger word. I am wondering if there are any specialized speech engines that support this specific use case, or any libraries/methods to developing such a single-purpose detection engine. Ideally I'd like it to work in noisy environments, but it can be trained for a single user's voice. Pointers to research papers / topics would also be appreciated so I know what to ask for.

• What are the alternatives for Java authentication?

  Preferably something that integrates well with a Flex front end. Yes the Spring Security guys say this is possible, but all examples seem to use legacy jsp tag libraries making them half useless as examples. I don't want to spend a month setting up and learning how to use a security tool. I would like a tool which supports using annotations (@RolesAllowed etc), MINIMAL XML, and 'remember-me' features (not cookie based). Apache Shiro seems to support Flex/Silverlight/Swing as well but I'd like to know if there are any other alternatives that are NOT container specific.

  Hi, If I have a regex with a capturing group, e.g. foo(_+f). If I match this against a string and want to replace the first capturing group in all matches with baz so that foo___f blah foo________f is converted to: foobaz blah foobaz There doesn't appear to be any easy way to do this using the standard libraries. If I use Matcher.replaceAll() this will replace all matches of the entire pattern and convert the string to baz blah baz Obviously I can just iterate through the matches, store the start and end index of each capturing group, then go back and replace them, but is there an easier way? • A tool to determine jar dependencies based on existing code?

  Is there a tool that can determine .jar dependencies given a directory of .jar files and a separate directory of java source code? I need to generate Eclipse .classpath files based on an existing code base that doesn't have any dependencies defined. To be more specific, I've been given a large codebase consisting of a dozen or so J2EE-style projects and a single directory of jar files. My client uses a custom development and build framework that is just too arcane for me to use and get any real work done. The projects do not have any information about their dependencies, either between projects or to jar libraries. I would expect this tool would have to spin through each jar file, indexing the classes available in that file and then go through each file in the project source code tree and match up the dependencies, possibly writing out a .classpath file with the required jar files. I realize this is a rather simplistic view of the operation, as duplicate classes among the jar files and such might make things more difficult.

  I'm currently working on a pet project and need to do C++ development on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Solaris, and I've narrowed it down to Netbeans and Eclipse, so I was wonderig which is more solid as a C++ editor. I just need solid editing, good autocompletion for templated code ad external libraries, and project file management, the build tools are external, so thats irrelevant here, for my comparison. Thus which is a better choice? Note: I know I should be using emacs or vim, but the issue is, my theory at least, that I'm left handed, so I use my right side (design,creativity) of the brain more than the left side (logic, memory), so I just simply cannot use emacs or vim, my brain simply isn't compatible, I tried them many times too, even used emacs for a few months but it drove me crazy... • Cocoa Launch agent registering itself after installation.

  I have created Cocoa app which is type of launch agent. To distribute this I have created package as well which installs the app and copies the launchagnet plist file in /Libraries/LaunchAgents. Now the problem is after installation i want this app to be running in user context immediately without logoff/restart. If I register this with "launchctl" from installer, using post install script, it run in root context, as installer is running in root context. Any suggestion how the agent registers itself to launchctl and runs in user context.

• Different versions in manifest on different machines

  Hi guys, Have two machines, both with VS2005 SP1 installed and with the WinSXS showing the same things installed. When one machine builds a particular C++ .dll .vcproj it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50727.762' processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> in its manifest file. But on the other machine it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50608.0 processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> even though this machine does not have '8.0.50608.0' libraries listed in its WinSXS. The .dll built on this machine with the older version referenced has some problems. I have ensured both machines have the same latest source code and references etc.. What could be causing it to build with the different reference? Thanks! Terry

Learning more than one programming language will make you a better programmer, for the more concepts you learn, the faster you will feel comfortable when the next language or technology will come. Mine, so far, are C, some C++, and Python, and many times I read that it would be worth learning LISP, for "the profound enlightenment experience you will have when you finally get it" (quoting Eric Raymond). My questions are: Which is the next one you would consider a good investment to learn? Of the many programming languages you have learnt and worked with, which ones do you consider to be an essential part of one's CS culture, and why? EDIT. Further question: is there any language you would sincerely advise to avoid as a waste of time? (The famous, and questionable, slatings in this letter from Dijkstra come to my mind.)

• Changing dalvik/libcore causes rebuilding the whole framework

  I'm adding some interception routines to Dalvik libcore methods (e.g. file open method in libcore/luni/src/main/java/org/apache/harmony/luni/platform/OSFileSystem.java), which I think only changes basic sharing libraries. But to my surprise, every time I run make after modifications, it rebuilds nearly everything of the framework, such as Calculator application, W3C DOM parser, etc. It really takes time to build the framework after a small modification. I'm wondering if it is possible to reduce number of rebuilt components after modifying dalvik libcore? Thanks.

• Implementation communication protocols in C/C++

  I am in the process of starting to implement some proprietary communication protocol stack in software but not sure where to start. It is the kind of work I have not done before and I am looking for help in terms of resources for best/recommended approaches. I will be using c/c++ and I am free to use use libraries (BSD/BOOST/Apache) but no GPL. I have used C++ extensively so using the features of C++ is not a problem. The protocol stack has three layers and it is already fully specified and formally verified. So all I need to do is implemented and test it fully in the specified languages. Should also mention that protocol is very simple but can run on different devices over a reliable physical transport layer Any help with references/recommendations will be appreciated. I am willing to use a different language if only to help me understand how to implement them but I will have to eventually resort to the language of choice.
