MS Word custom dictionary making spellcheck slow - ideas?

I have a user who edits technical materials. She uses MS Word's Custom Dictionary all the time for spelling; it has grown very large, and is now making spell check very slow. All of the advice I've read online says to disable the custom dictionary. This is an easy solution, but is not workable for the user, because she actually needs this dictionary. So, is there any way to optimize the custom dictionary and/or Word itself, so that a large dictionary file doesn't slow things down quite so badly? Many thanks. Update after suggestions: I ran contig on the file, and it reports just 1 frag, so that's not the issue I think. The file is 9.95KB -- 1,117 lines, each consisting of just a single word. I viewed the file using Notepad and none of the lines seems corrupted, strange, or overly long (no line seems to be over 10 chars or so). Both of your suggestions were helpful so I will upvote both; any further tips would be most welcome.

Office 365 - unable to deactivate

We are using Office 365 ProPlus 2013. A new user tried to activate their install and received the error that they had reached their install limit of 5 machines. Upon clicking the link the deactivate previous installs that appears in that error dialog, the user is taken to their Office software management tab. Usually, if the user has previous installs, they are listed here and the user is able to deactivate. However, in this case, previous installs do not appear and it seems something else may be the problem. I am looking for any suggestions as to what may be the problem, thanks.

Outlook 2010 intermittently going offline

Just a quick question to see if anyone can give me any direction in or solve the the following problem: Within the office there are a minority who use Outlook client using IMAP and the rest use Thunderbird on Linux. The people who are using Outlook 2010 are repeated (almost daily) reporting outages of emailing services for hours at a time forcing them to sign in and out etc but the people using Thunderbird do not have any issues what so ever which I assume will rule out an issue with the old mail server we are currently using. Any help in the matter would be hugely appreciated and of course if I can provide any further information to articulate understanding of the issue then please just ask. Thanks!

Cross-update Word Fields

I want to change a date in a field within my word document, and have it update a couple other fields automatically within the same document. The behavior I'm seeking is basically the same as what a spreadsheet can do. Is this possible? More specifically, if the first page of the document has the date Jan 20 2012, I want to be able to change it, and then watch a couple other dates elsewhere automatically change to either the same date or the same date plus six days. I would also "settle" for having all three fields updated from a central document property (though I don't know how to create one of those properties). Regardless of which approach is used, I want one of the dates to be <value> plus six days such as Jan 26 2012 based on the earlier example I gave.

How to I create a table of contents in a Word document that has a mind of it's own?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm struggling to get a table of contents going in a Word doc that's already been created. I know enough to understand that the TOC is based on the type of the header/style and indentation. My approach so far has been to auto-generate the TOC and then try (unsuccessfully) to fix the problems; perhaps this isn't the best approach in this situation. What's happening is that the TOC is missing half my sections and for others it's adding way too much detail. Again my sense is I have to "fix" individual section headings but I haven't been successful so far.

Is it possible to set up rule in Outlook 2010 based on message class?

I recieve all the undeliverable reports for mailings sent from my company. Moving and cataloguing them can take a while, and it would be handy if I could create a rule that did that for me. The most robust way of doing this would seem to be to run a rule based on the Undeliverable message class. However, I can't see message class as an option anywhere in the advanced rules wizard, and Googling it is no help. EDIT: I already have a rule that searches for "Undeliverable" in the subject header of emails received and moves them, but this only affects traditional emails (i.e. those with a message class of "Message") and ignores actual undeliverable reports. Am I missing something obvious, or can this not be done?

Resizing custom bullets without changing the font size - Word 2010

I'm trying to make some custom bullets in Word 2010 with the help of a picture. I thought if I made the picture the desired size everything would work out fun, but it didn't. The problem is that the bullets are always bigger than the text which is not what I had in mind. So my question is, is there any way to properly size the custom made bullets or is there another way to create these so they are actually smaller than my text. If I change the font size of my text the bullets automatically become bigger as well. I would include an image but I don't have the sufficiënt reputation to do so. Thank you in advance.

Outlook 2010 says "File is in use by another application or user" while closing

Outlook opens, gets new emails and everything but when I close it, it gives me the following error and then opens up a Save a File window after I cancel this error message. There's no other computer that may be using Outlook under this User Name because I just set-up a brand new User Name. However, Colligo Briefcase is attached to the Outlook and not sure if this is triggering and if so how I address the issue!? Thanks a lot!

word 2010 spell checker chokes on Camel Case

This is driving me nuts. I'm using Word to summarize books I study. Now, for a term such as BindingOperations.ClearBinding It first complains about why I don't have "Binding Operations". Then why I don't have "Clear Binding". And lastly, even after I add "BindingOperations" and "ClearBinding" to the dictionary, it complains aobut BindingOperations.ClearBinding! My question is: How can I configure Word's spell checker to accept Word1Word2 and CorrectWord1.CorrectWord2 when the spelling of Word1, Word2, CorrectWord1 and CorrectWord2 are correct? edit: I'm embarresed to say I have solved the problem. I just used dashes as in "Frame-Position" instead of FramePosition.

Converting MSDN license to full, commercial license

I had to throw a machine together in a bit of a hurry- to replace a machine that suddenly failed (no one had bothered to keep a "warm" backup) It has Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2008 The snag is, I installed them off our MSDN subscription media, due to me not having "licensed" software. I need to put this machine into production. We are in the process of buying the licenses from a MS reseller now. Is there a way to "convert" the MSDN license to production on both Windows Server and SQL?

hi i have a problem, i have a user who created a database using ms access 2003 the problem is, if he's opening the db and made some changes, the other user can open the db but they can't work on it. but if he's exited the program, then the user can make some changes. i would like to know if its possible; that they can work at the same time when they open the database? Table Formatting in Word

I have a table in Word which is 5 columns wide and multiple rows. In Row 3, cells 1, 2, 3 & 5 have simple text. Cell 4 contains a large quantity of text and therefore needs to wrap over several pages. Therefore, I mark "Allow row to break across pages". Problem: on next page where row has wrapped, cells 1, 2, 3 & 5 are blank with cell 4 displaying the wrapped text. Is there any way that I can get the simple text from Row 3, cells 1, 2 and 3 to repeat on the pages which contain the wrapped text of cell 4? I do not want the data to be in the table heading, as I have multiple rows which have a similar volume of text.

Common request: export #Tabular model and data to #PowerPivot

I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional. Software solution from the 2000's, should I attempt to patch or remake the whole thing?

I was sent out to discuss a system that a certain company is currently using and what should be done with it. The company manufactures various carton displays. This system was developed to keep track of clients, orders and prices. Lots have happened since the system was created and the system is now, as the manager described it, "locked up" and "problematic", which I translate as "not dynamic" and "unstable". Some info about the system It was developed around the year 2000 Fairly small system, 2-5 users, 6 forms, ~8 tables with average quantities of data Built on early Visual Basic, forms created with the drag and drop design. Interface is basically just a window with a menu and some forms Uses MSSQL database (SQL2005 server) to store data and ODBC driver to query, data was migrated from excel before this system, and before excel it was handled, calculated and written by hand and paper Users work in Microsoft XP environment (and up) Their main problem is that they can't adjust and calculate prices, can't add new carton types etc, correctly anymore because they can't (or rather, they don't know how to) touch the data on the server. I suggested 3 possible solutions Attempt to patch the current system Create a fresh new interface (preferably similar environment, VB.net or VB based) Bring it back to an Excel solution, considering it is such a small system There might be more options, but these are the ones I could think of. My questions are What should I recommend and why? What is or could be the pros and cons of these alternatives? Are there other (possibly better) alternatives?

Error Using 32 vs. 64 bit SharePoint 2007 DLLs with PowerShell

Next time you fire up PowerShell to work with the SharePoint API make sure you launch the proper bit version of PowerShell. Last week I had an interesting error that led to this blog post. Travel back in time a little bit with me to see where this 32 vs. 64 bit debate started. History Ever since the first pre-beta bits of Office 2010 landed in my lap I have been questioning whether it’s better to run 32 or 64 bit applications on a 64 bit host operating system. In relation to Office 2010 I heard a number of arguments for 32 bit including this link from the Office 2010 Engineering team. Given my typical usage scenarios 32 bit seemed the way to go since I wasn’t a “super RAM hungry” Excel user or the like. The Problem Since I had chosen 32 bit Office 2010, I tried to stick with 32 bit version of other programs that I run assuming the same benefits and rules applied to other applications. This is where I was wrong. Last week I was attempting to use 32 bit PowerShell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) on a 64 bit WSS 3.0 server. When trying to reference the 64 bit SharePoint DLLs I got the following errors about not being able to find the web application. I have run into these errors when I have hosts file issues or improper permissions to the farm / site collection but these were not the case. After taking a quick spin around the interwebs I ran across the below forum post comment and another MSDN forum reply that explained the error. Turns out that sometimes it’s not possible to run 32 bit applications against a 64 bit OS / farm / assembly / etc. …the problem could also be because your SharePoint is 64-Bit but your app is running in 32-bit mode I quickly exited 32 bit PowerShell ISE and ran the same code under 64 bit PowerShell ISE. All errors were gone and the script ran successfully. Conclusion The rules of 32 vs. 64 bit interoperability do not always apply evenly across all applications and scenarios. In my case I wasn’t able to run 32 bit PowerShell against 64 bit SharePoint DLLs. I’m updating all of my links and shortcuts to use 64 bit PowerShell where appropriate. I’m quite surprised it has taken me this long to run into this error, but sometimes blind luck is all that keeps you from running into errors. Lesson learned and hopefully this can benefit you as well. Unable to Sign in to the Microsoft Online Services Signin application from Windows 7 client located behind ISA firewall

A while ago i helped a customer troubleshoot authentication problem with Microsoft Online Services Signin application. This customer was evaluating Microsoft BPOS (Business Productivity Online Services) and was having trouble using the single sign on application behind ISA 2004 firewall.The network structure is fairly simple with single Windows 2003 Active Directory domain and Windows 7 clients. On a successful logon to the Microsoft Online Services Signin application, this application provides single signon functionality to all of Microsoft online services in the BPOS package. Symptoms:When trying to signin it fails with error "The service is currently unavailable. Please try again later. If problems continue, contact your service administrator". If ISA 2004 firewall is removed from the picture the authentication succeeds.Troubleshooting: Enabled ISA Server firewall logging along with Microsoft Network Monitor tool on the Windows 7 Client while reproducing the issue. Analysis of the ISA Server Firewall logs and Microsoft Network capture revealed that the Microsoft Online Services Sign In application when sending request to ISA Server does not send the domain credentials and as a result ISA Server responds with an error code of HTTP 407 Proxy authentication required listing out the supported authentication mechanisms. The application in question is expected to send the credentials of the domain user in response to this request. However in this case, it fails to send the logged on user's domain credentials. Bit of researching on the Internet revealed that The "Microsoft Online Services Sign In" application by default does not support Outbound Internet Proxy authentication. In order for it to send the logged on user's domain credentials we had to make changes to its configuration file "SignIn.exe.config" located under "Program Files\Microsoft Online Services\Sign In" folder. Step by Step details to configure the configuration file are documented on Microsoft TechNet website given below. Analysis of another network capture revealed that the application in question is now sending the required credentials and the connection seems to terminate at a later stage. Enabled verbose logging for the "Microsoft Online Services Sign In" application and then reproduced the problem. Analysis of the logs revealed a time difference between the local client and Microsoft Online services server of around seven minutes which is above the acceptable time skew of five minutes. Current time is '2012-01-26T08:27:52.987Z' and allowed clock skew is '00:05:00'.1/26/2012 1:57:52 PM Exception SSOSignIn.SignIn Although the Windows 7 Clients successfully synchronized time to the domain controller for the domain, the domain controller was not configured to synchronize time with external NTP servers. This caused a gradual drift in time on the network thus resulting in the above issue. Reconfigured the domain controller holding the PDC FSMO role to synchronize time with external time source ( time.nist.gov ) and edited the system policy on the ISA server firewall to allow NTP traffic to time.nist.gov Configure the time source for the forest:Windows Time Servicehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794937(WS.10).aspx Forced synchronization of Windows time using the command w32tm /resync on the domain controller and later on the clients each of which had corrected the seven minutes difference. This resolved the problem with logon to Microsoft Online Services Sign In.

When learning C, should one only refer to resources published from 2007 onward?

I ask this question because the international standardization subcommittee for programming languages, or ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 Programming languages, states on this page: http://www.open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG14/www/standards that Technical Corrigendum 3, the latest one, was published in 2007. Now I take it that this means the C language it self was changed and that the books and tutorials pre-2007 may contain outdated information. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks, Adam

Checkbox in a Microsoft Report (rdlc) table

I'm a newcomer to using Microsoft Reporting (RDLC) and I'm trying to display a table with a checkbox inside of it. The data I have is stored in bit fashion: I want this data to display on the report like this: I can get the data to display in a normal table without issue, but when I do, the bit values are formatted as "true" or "false". Does anyone know of a way to do this? I have googled around and found reference to other people with the same issue but no solutions. I am using a Report Viewer control to display the report in an ASP.NET website written in C#.

It lasts for 3 days, and the price is $1,495. What do you guys think, is it worth it?
