• Multiple stores for the same niche

  I started developing a new niche of products in my country about 3 years ago. That's when I opened my first store. Everything went fine, until a year ago, when someone I thought was a friend secretly stole my idea and made his own competing store. I was pretty upset when I caught him and decided to make it as difficult as possible for him, so I made another 4 stores, trying to get him as low as possible in the search results. The new sites have similar products (although not 100% identical), slightly different titles, images and prices. They look different and are built on different e-commerce platforms. They are all hosted on the same server, have roughly the same backlinks, use the same Google account for Analytics, have the same support phone numbers etc etc. I wasn't thinking that I'm doing something fishy, so I didn't try to hide anything. Trouble is that those sites, after doing fine for a few months, dropped like bricks in search results, almost to the point that they can't be found at all. At the moment, the only site that ranks relatively well is the original one and a couple of secondary pages with no importance from one of the other sites. How did this happen? Does Google have something against this practice? Did they take action by themselves when they realized that I was trying to monopolize this niche, or did my competitor report me for some kind of webspam? And more importantly, what do I do now? Do I shutdown all but my original site and 301 redirect users to it from the others? Can I report my competitor for engaging in the same practice? (He fought back and now he has 3-4 sites, some of which still rank kind of OKish, also he has no idea about web development, SEO or marketing, he just crudely copies what I do and is slowly but surely starting to do better than me).

• Customer Experience Gipfel – ein Nachbericht

  Am 14. Juni fand der Customer Experience Gipfel statt, der von Dialogum exklusiv für Oracle und seine Partner durchgeführt wurde. Dort konnten Partner und Endkunden über die Zukunft des Kundenmanagements diskutieren und erfuhren, was sich hinter dem Begriff „Customer Experience“ alles verbirgt. Die Konferenz begann mit einem Networking Dinner am Vorabend, an dem den 80 Teilnehmern in einer ersten Präsentation das Thema „Mobile Commerce“ vorgestellt wurde. Nach einem guten Abendessen hatten alle die Möglichkeit, auf einer Großleinwand beim EM-Spiel Deutschland gegen Holland mitzufiebern. Insgesamt war es ein sehr gelungener Abend, waren die deutschen Jungs doch siegreich und sicherten sich den Einzug ins Viertelfinale. Der Customer Experience Gipfel selbst hat dann alle Erwartungen übertroffen: 150 Teilnehmer, ein Drittel mehr als erwartet, zeigten großes Interesse an Multichannel-Strategien, Loyalty und wie man jeden einzelnen Schritt des Kunden im Kontakt mit dem Unternehmen zu einem positiven Kundenerlebnis werden lässt. So standen überwiegend Unternehmenspräsentationen aus den unterschiedlichen Branchen wie Telekommunikation, Handel oder Travel & Transportation auf dem Programm. Neun Round Tables, fast alle von den teilnehmenden Oracle Partnern moderiert, und 1:1-Gespräche rundeten die Konferenz ab. Und Zeit zum Networking blieb natürlich auch. Bei diesem Angebot war das Teilnehmer-Fazit demnach durchwegs positiv, vor allem sind die Kunden (und Partner) schon auf Oracle Customer Experience (CX) und die Vorteile für das eigene Kundenmanagement gespannt. • Closer look at the SOA 12c Feature: Oracle Managed File Transfer

  The rapid growth of cloud-based applications in the enterprise, combined with organizations' desire to integrate applications with mobile technologies, is dramatically increasing application integration complexity. To meet this challenge, Oracle introduced Oracle SOA Suite 12c, the latest version of the industry's most complete and unified application integration and SOA solution. With simplified cloud, mobile, on-premises, and Internet of Things (IoT) integration capabilities, all within a single platform, Oracle SOA Suite 12c helps organizations speed time to integration, improve productivity, and lower TCO. To extend its B2B solution capabilities with Oracle SOA Suite 12c, Oracle unveiled Oracle Managed File Transfer, an integrated solution that enables organizations to virtually eliminate file transfer complexities. This allows customers to load data securely into Oracle Cloud applications as well as third-party cloud or partner applications. Oracle Managed File Transfer (Oracle MFT) enables secure file exchange and management with internal departments and external partners. • Wireless internet is connected to an open network but has no internet

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop yesterday and it connected to the wireless fine. Then I took it to school, put it on their wired connection, downloaded some stuff, and now the wireless doesn't work. At first it would detect networks, but not connect. I restarted it and now it can connect, but it acts like it doesn't have internet in the browser. Wired connection still works fine on it. I know it isn't the network because my ipad is working on the wireless connection fine. I found another solution on here switching the security settings for the wireless, but this is the apartment's wireless so they have it open, and I won't be able to mess with it at all.   I run a Magento e-commerce store with multiple subdomains for an affiliate program, plus a main store. Example, foo.example.com and bar.example.com are affiliates, www.example.com is my main store. They all share the same code and database and the same virtual host. Currently I have a wildcard certificate which works fine for everything. However, I was looking at EV certificates to increase customer confidence (which is not possible with wildcard certificates -- or so I'm told). What would be the simplest setup to have both an EV SSL Cert for the main store and a wildcard for the affiliate subdomains? Two virtual hosts? By the way, I'm running Litespeed as a webserver.

• Using 3G/UMTS in Mauritius

  After some conversation, threads in online forum and mailing lists I thought about writing this article on how to setup, configure and use 3G/UMTS connections on Linux here in Mauritius. Personally, I can only share my experience with Emtel Ltd. but try to give some clues about how to configure Orange as well. Emtel 3G/UMTS surf stick Emtel provides different surf sticks from Huawei. Back in 2007, I started with an E220 that wouldn't run on Windows Vista either. Nowadays, you just plug in the surf stick (ie. E169) and usually the Network Manager will detect the new broadband modem. Nothing to worry about. The Linux Network Manager even provides a connection profile for Emtel here in Mauritius and establishing the Internet connection is done in less than 2 minutes... even quicker. Using wvdial Old-fashioned Linux users might not take Network Manager into consideration but feel comfortable with wvdial. Although that wvdial is primarily used with serial port attached modems, it can operate on USB ports as well. Following is my configuration from /etc/wvdial.conf: [Dialer Defaults]Phone = *99#Username = emtelPassword = emtelNew PPPD = yesStupid Mode = 1Dial Command = ATDT[Dialer emtel]Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0Baud = 3774000Init2 = ATZInit3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0Init4 = AT+cgdcont=1,"ip","web"ISDN = 0Modem Type = Analog Modem The values of user name and password are optional and can be configured as you like. In case that your SIM card is protected by a pin - which is highly advised, you might another dialer section in your configuration file like so: [Dialer pin]Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0Init1 = AT+CPIN=0000 This way you can "daisy-chain" your command to establish your Internet connection like so: wvdial pin emtel And it works auto-magically. Depending on your group assignments (dialout), you might have to sudo the wvdial statement like so: sudo wvdial pin emtel Orange parameters As far as I could figure out without really testing it myself, it is also necessary to set the Access Point (AP) manually with Orange. Well, although it is pretty obvious a lot of people seem to struggle. The AP value is "orange". Official Linux support from providers It's just simple: Forget it! The people at the Emtel call center are completely focused on the hardware and Mobile Connect software application provided by Huawei and are totally lost in case that you confront them with other constellations. For example, my wife's netbook has an integrated 3G/UMTS modem from Ericsson. Therefore, no need to use the Huawei surf stick at all and of course we use the existing software named Wireless Manager instead of. Now, imagine to mention at the help desk: "Ehm, sorry but what's Mobile Connect?" And Linux after all might give the call operator sleepless nights... Who knows? Anyways, I hope that my article and configuration could give you a helping hand and that you will be able to connect your Linux box with 3G/UMTS surf sticks here in Mauritius.

• what is a normal developer to pageview ratio?

  I work for an e-commerce site that has lately been shedding its workforce. I was hired ten months ago as a UI Developer. At that time we had three other developers. One was the technical lead who had been with the company for 10 years. The other two were server-side developers who had been there for 10 and 3.5 years respectively. In ten months, the technical lead left for a better position, one developer was laid off, and the other very recently left. So, I am now the only developer on staff. We have one DBA and one network administrator. They are currently looking to hire another developer but are not willing to pay enough to hire a senior person. I consider myself a junior developer with two years of experience. I have argued that we need to hire at least one senior developer and another junior developer if we're going to keep our current site operational (not to mention develop new features)...even if that means laying off staff in other departments. Right now we get 6.5 million pageviews per month, and I feel like 3.2 million pageviews per developer must be incredibly abnormal. My question is then: what is a normal developer to pageview ratio? Are there any industry standards or literature on the subject that I can use to argue for more staff?

• how do i fix this: the networking and wireless are enabled. but list of networks under wireless networks not available

  i started working with ubuntu 11.10 last year. i upgraded to 12.04 a week back. since then i have had all sorts of problems with network connection. first had to install the new driver. the hardware switch somehow got disabled then the above problem arrived. even tho the options are all enabled, the OS is not able to detect scan available network connections. also i have to bring to notice that once in a while it does get connected, can not explain how it happens. • Should I include HTML markup in my JSON response?

  In an e-commerce site, when adding an item to a cart, I'd like to show a popup window with the options you can choose. Imagine you're ordering an iPod Shuffle and now you have to choose the color and text to engrave. I'd like the window to be modal, so I'm using a lightbox populated by an Ajax call. Now I have two options: Option 1: Send only the data, and generate the HTML markup using JavaScript What's nice about this is that it trims down the Ajax request to the bear minimum and doesn't mix the data with the markup. What's not so great about this is that now I need to use JavaScript to do my rendering, instead of having a template engine on the server-side do it. I might be able to clean up the approach a bit by using a client-side templating solution. Option 2: Send the HTML markup What's good about this is that I can have the same server-side templating engine I'm using for the rest of my rendering tasks (Django), do the rendering of the lightbox. JavaScript is only used to insert the HTML fragment into the page. So it clearly leaves the rendering to the rendering engine. Makes sense to me. But I don't feel comfortable mixing data and markup in an Ajax call for some reason. I'm not sure what makes me feel uneasy about it. I mean, it's the same way every web page is served up -- data plus markup -- right?

• BlueTooth not working on my HP Probook 4720s

  the blue tooth on my ubuntu 11.10 does not work. When i try to ad a device it scans indefinitely and never find anything. Wireless is working perfeclty and with windows 7 it is detected. As i read somewhere , the bluetooth is not listed in the usb devices. • How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

  Pardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • Deploying new code live

  What's the best practise to deploy new code on a live (e-commerce) site? For now I have stopped apache for +/- 10 seconds when renaming directory public_html_new to public_html and old to public_html_old. This creates a short down-time, before I start Apache again. The same question goes if using Git to pull the new repo to the live directory. Can I pull the repo while the site is active? And how about if I need to copy a DB as well? During the tar (backup purpose) compression of the live site I noticed that changes occurred in the media directory. That indicated to me that files keep on changing periodically. And if these changes can interfere if Apache is not stopped during deployment.

• Closed-loop Recommendation Engines: Analyst Insight report on Oracle Real-Time Decisions (RTD)

• Industry perspectives on managing content

  Earlier this week I was noodling over a topic for my first blog post. My intention for this blog is to bring a practitioner's perspective on ECM to the community; to share and collaborate on best practices and approaches that address today's business problems. Reviewing my past 14 years of experience with web technologies, I wondered what topic would serve as a good "conversation starter". During this time, I received a call from a friend who was seeking insights on how content management applies to specific industries. She approached me because she vaguely remembered that I had worked in the Health Insurance industry in the recent past. She wanted me to tell her about the specific business needs of this industry. She was in for quite a surprise as she found out that I had spent the better part of a decade managing content within the Health Insurance industry and I discovered a great topic for my first blog post! I offer some insights from Health Insurance and invite my fellow practitioners to share their insights from other industries. What does content management mean to these industries? What can solution providers be aware of when offering solutions to these industries? The United States health care system relies heavily on private health insurance, which is the primary source of coverage for approximately 58% Americans. In the late 19th century, "accident insurance" began to be available, which operated much like modern disability insurance. In the late 20th century, traditional disability insurance evolved into modern health insurance programs. The first thing a solution provider must be aware of about the Health Insurance industry is that it tends to be transaction intensive. They are the ones who manage and administer our health plans and process our claims when we visit our health care providers. It helps to keep in mind that they are in the business of delivering health insurance and not technology. You may find the mindset conservative in comparison to the IT industry, however, the Health Insurance industry has benefited and will continue to benefit from the efficiency that technology brings to traditionally paper-driven processes. We are all aware of the impact that Healthcare reform bill has had a significant impact on the Health Insurance industry. They are under a great deal of pressure to explore ways to reduce their administrative costs and increase operational efficiency. Overall, administrative costs of health insurance include the insurer's cost to administer the health plan, the costs borne by employers, health-care providers, governments and individual consumers. Inefficiencies plague health insurance, owing largely to the absence of standardized processes across the industry. To achieve this, industry leaders have come together to establish standards and invest in initiatives to help their healthcare provider partners transition to the next generation of healthcare technology. The move to online services and paperless explanation of benefits are some manifestations of technological advancements in health insurance. Several companies have adopted Toyota's LEAN methodology or Six Sigma principles to improve quality, reduce waste and excessive costs, thereby increasing the value of their plan offerings. A growing number of health insurance companies have transformed their business systems in the past decade alone and adopted some form of content management to reduce the costs involved in administering health plans. The key strategy has been to convert paper documents and forms into electronic formats, automate the content development process and securely distribute content to various audiences via diverse marketing channels, including web and mobile. Enterprise content management solutions can enable document capture of claim forms, manage digital assets, integrate with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Human Capital Management (HCM) solutions, build Business Process Management (BPM) processes, define retention and disposition instructions to comply with state and federal regulations and allow eBusiness and Marketing departments to develop and deliver web content to multiple websites, mobile devices and portals. Content can be shared securely within and outside the organization using Information Rights Management.  At the end of the day, solution providers who can translate strategic goals into solutions that maximize process automation, increase ease of use and minimize IT overhead are likely to be successful in today's health insurance environment.
