• Why doesn't the installer see all of my hard drives?

  I'm trying to setup a dual boot system with Windows Vista 64 (already installed) and Ubuntu 10.10. I added a new drive which is identical to the one Vista is installed on. When I boot into the LiveCD I can see and mount the second drive and edit it in Gparted. However, when I use the installer it will only bring up the drive that already has Vista installed. I've tried everything I know. I'm not sure if its a BIOS setting or something else I've missed. I've also tried both the desktop and alternate amd64 installs with the same result.

• Flash Retirement - HTML to be "the one"

• Can I clone my hard drive to an external and boot from the clone?

  First thing: I am not asking what software I'm supposed to use. I already know the answer: Ghost (proprietary), Clonezilla, and dd (if I'm careful). What I really want to know is if it is possible to (essentially) bit-for-bit clone my entire installation (OS, installed software, activation(s), etc.) to an external USB hard-drive, and then boot off of that (if I need to, I know how to edit BIOS settings and use Plop boot manager), and work with it day-to-day as if there was virtually no difference from using my internal HDD now. Again, I'm not asking how to install Windows to an external (because I know I'd need to do some special workaround), I'm asking if I can clone everything and boot off of it. In case you're wondering why I'm going to this trouble: I'm using a Lenovo Essentials laptop that has an unmodifiable partition table (due to recovery crap), and has all 4 of its partitions spoken for (3 primary, one extended, cannot change the extended). Anyway, my thought is that if I can clone everything and boot off of it when I need to, and just have a Linux distro on the internal HDD, then that could work.

  I just recently (+- 30 minutes ago) install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on my pc (dual boot) via Live USB (i check the "automatically install upgrade" option when installing it). unfortunately, at the login screen after the installation finished (after reboot), i cannot use my mouse! also, an error message occur saying that network connection is not available. but, when i restart again and using the "try Ubuntu without installing" in the Live USB, the problems didn't occur. i tried to googling this but failed to find any solution. and yes, i am totally green on Ubuntu and Linux. so, please, help me on this. thanks in advance.

• How do I restore GRUB 2?

  I upgraded my laptop with an SSD, moving my old HDD to where the DVD-drive was, so that I could have speed and storage. Now, I have reinstalled Ubuntu on the SSD, deleting all the partitions on the old HDD to make space for a data partition. But now the laptop doesn't even get to GRUB 2 if the HDD is plugged in! If I take it out, everything works, but as soon as I plug it in and retry to boot, I won't find GRUB. At first, I thought it was because of the boot order, but the order was OK: first the notebook hard drive (SSD) and then the CD/DVD drive (which in reality is the HDD). How can I fix it? Doing a simple grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.. The SSD is sda, and the HDD is sdb.

  I tried to upgrade a laptop to SP3, which broke it. I later found out SP3 doesn't work on that 2002 laptop. I can't uninstall SP3, or fix SP2, because the hard drive is now not detected during setup (I've read that's the problem you get). I put the hard drive in a USB drive case and plugged it into my other laptop, and I can read (& write to) the disk okay. (The hard drive won't fit in my other laptop, so I'm using USB.) I need to get that disk back to SP2, or fix whatever files got screwed up causing the disk to not be recognized. I don't want to do a re-install as there are 80GB of files on it I need, and they won't fit on the HD of my other laptop, and also because I no longer have some of the install CDs for software on it. What do I need to do to fix that drive from my other laptop? (I don't want my working laptop (XP SP3) to get screwed with by putting an SP2 disk in the CD drive, or the non-o/s data on the other hard drive screwed with.)

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot only when USB drive is connected

  I freshly installed "Ubuntu 12.04" on my Dell Lattitude D830. While I am able to work on it, there is a starange problem while booting my laptop. It doesn't boot unless the USB drive which was used to install it is connected. It looks like the OS is installed on hard drive, but the boot record is in USB. However, I am not sure on this. I am not able to figure out the problem and need your help in this regard.

• Machine check error on ASUS while booting from USB

  I put the last Ubuntu iso on my USB stick using UNetBootin, after formatting it to fat32. I've already done that before with other operating systems and it worked. I can't actually boot Ubuntu from USB since I get a black screen with the error "Machine check error" on top the an automatic reboot happens. The error appears right after the boot, I can't see anything else before. I'm using my ASUS X54L latop. Does anybody know how to solve this? Installation from CD/DVD works.

  I just built a pc and I am trying to install Ubuntu 14 onto it. I did the process in which you format the flash drive to be able to have Ubuntu 14 and install directly in BIOS. BIOS is set up to boot from the flash drive. Every time I try to do the install process, it will randomly reboot itself onto the motherboard BIOS menu. This loop constantly occurs and the only way I can use Ubuntu is to put the option of trying but not installing. HELP!

  Alright here is the problem: the creators of a quite popular flash-based game have asked me to port their game to Android. They are not interested in any other platforms so we don't need to be worrying about iOS or PC. They want the best performance on just Android (I guess that's the point of porting a flash-based game. They could have just went with it) They found Unity 'slow'. How would the performance (on android) of other engines compare? Are they expecting too much i.e. finding Unity slow? I am in favor of Unity since development is a little easier with more things being visual (I am not experienced as you might have guessed). For example the modern Operating systems have this feature that we plug in our device and it just automatically shows the contents of the device on new window. I am implementing my UI on android API level 10 and my device is IMX reference kit which has android 2.3.4 installed. I would be grateful if anyone could give specif suggestion or guideline. • 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

  I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top). • Is there a performance difference between Windows 7 on SSD installed from scratch versus it using a recent ghost/clone drive image from a harddisk?

  I'm planning to upgrade a notebook PC to a Solid-State Flash Drive (SSD) soon. I want to use the notebook before that and am considering installing Windows 7 on the hard disk (spinning variety, 5400rpm) before I get the SSD. To save time I am wondering if I can ghost/clone the installation of Windows 7 from the hard drive and put on the SSD. Would the performance of this clone from the harddisk onto the SSD be different from starting again and reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch on the SSD? (Windows 7 32bit professional)

  Hey, so I'm having a bunch of trouble getting ExternalInterface to work, which is odd, because I use it somewhat often. I'm hoping it's something I just missed because I've been looking at it too long. The flash_ready function is correctly returning the objectID, and as far as I can tell, everything else is in order. Unfortunately, when I run it, I get an error (varying by browser) telling me that basically document.getElementById(<movename>).test() is not a valid method. • What are "Excess Fragments" in defragmenting a hard drive?

  I'm defragmenting my hard drive (XP SP3) with PerfectDisk 7.0, and it finds 816,659 excess fragments when I ask for an analysis. [update] Specifically, it shows that the 1TB disk is 14% fragmented with 19693 fragments and 816,659 excess fragments. About 20% of the disk is still free space. What does excess fragments refer to? What is the difference between fragments and excess fragments? I have had problems in the past where I defragmented a fragmented disk and many files were corrupted. It seemed as though "excess fragments" referred to orphan pieces, where the program couldn't find out where to put them. If that was true, then defragmenting a disk resulted in many incomplete files, and in fact I defragmented a disk full of MP3's and got a lot of corrupted files as a result. Instead, I started to simply format a separate disk and copy everything from one to the other. That way there were no orphan bits, and no file corruption. Does anybody know what "excess fragments" really are?

• Are there any disadvantages of having a "free fall sensor" on a hard disk drive?

  This is a general question that came out of a specific comparison between the Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEKT and Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BJKT (which is the same as the former but with a free fall sensor.) Note: I'm not asking for a review or appraisal of these specific drives, as the general question does apply on other brands as well. Though your input would help my decision. To break down the general question in order to answer it, I would be looking for comments on things like: if it's necessary to have differing physical dimensions between free fall sensor drives and those without, e.g. does it make it any thicker, and therefore reduce the systems where it can be installed - particularly smaller laptops? does it actually make the system less reliable - because of false alarms whereby the drive thought the laptop was falling but it wasn't? I suppose that the fact that a manufacturer produces both drives with and without free fall sensors says something about possible disadvantages. Or it could be standard marketing techniques where by making drives with and without results in larger sales volume than just those with the feature alone.

• CD/DVD Drive not detecting locally burned CD/DVDs, but works fine with Genuine discs.

  I'm using Dell Inspiron 1420 - 32 Bit - Windows Vista, since 2.5 years. I'm facing a strange problem with my CD/DVD-drive. I cannot run/play a CD/DVD which I get burned from my friends. But when I insert Genuine CD, I'm able to play/run it. And when I try to install my Vista package which I got with my notebook, the CD/DVD gets loaded. If I insert a CD/DVD which I get from my friend, CD doesn't get loaded and the system gets hanged. But all these CDs/DVDs work on other systems. I've tested it on many of my friends PCs. So, now I'm able to run only genuine CDs & a few genuine DVDs. My Experience/Experiments: I tried to install Windows Vista using Genuine DVD - It worked I tried to install Ubuntu which I got from shipped from Canonical Ltd. - It worked I tried to install OpenSUSE .iso file burned to a DVD in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs(Tested in 4 other PCs) Tried to play a DVD containing movies, burned in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.   Hi, I'm a complete newbie to Flex, so apologies for my dumbness. I've searched for an answer but haven't found anything that seems to be doing the trick. What I'm trying to do: port this example http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/flex/articles/flex_air_codebase_print.html to Flash Builder 4. All seems to be fine but for one thing. I will accept answer as solved when it has one section per scenario and assumes nothing other than what is specified. Please add to the existing answer, wiki style, keeping to the original assumptions. Rules: 1. You cannot, at any point in the answer, invoke Ubiquity (the Ubuntu installer). 2. • guvciew/youtube problem

  I'm fairly new to Linux. Running on 12.10 Ubuntu. I've been running into some problems recording videos. Cheese crashes (as I've read from other users), YouTube will not allow me to select Allow (flash in Chrome and in Firefox). I managed to get 1 video uploaded from my cam and it worked about half the time, cut the audio off, lagged, etc. My computer is fine 4gigs, 32-bit i5 so it shouldn't be a problem. Now onto guv, I managed to get 1 video to work and after that every video I save it comes up with an orange file that looks like a film. I tried to change the file name, open in VLC, everything. I love Ubuntu and I'm never going back to Windows, ever One other thing to note is I am allowed to click "allowed" in Tiny chat. I even went to the adobe website to allow everything to bypass allow, deny option and nothing. Even went out of my way to add youtube/upload/cam for it to allow it and nothing. I realize right now Flash has been terrible for the past couple of months (especially in Chrome). What my question is well first and foremost, how do I fix this, if possible? I've thought about running Wine but I haven't heard anything good about it and I've already re reformated Ubuntu twice. Is there a codec pack I need too? Like I said everything works fine, especially in Chrome. It allows me to broadcast, no lag, and my mic works fine. guv would be my best option at this point because everything I've tried has given me nothing but trouble Thanks and I hope you guys can give me an answer. I've been at this for 2-3 days straight now. I could even go out of my way to not use Youtube and use something similar if it came down to it.

• Ubuntu installation on Windows , I can't find my way back.

  So recently I have installed Ubuntu as an OS in addition to my Windows because it looked good and I have used it in the past and I liked it. Before I installed Ubuntu, they (the website) have given me a help list that shows that I will have the option of having Windows aside to Ubuntu (dual install), while I work with the Ubuntu OS. They told me that if I either put it in a CD or USB drive, I'll be okay. So there I was, installing Ubuntu, saving the Ubuntu file on my USB drive first, then afterwards clicking it and therefore proceeded to install. The problem is once I installed Ubuntu, it directed me to the 'login' page without giving me an option for dual-installing (you know, the language portion and so on). Now I tried both to suspend and shut off, and it seems like I cannot access my Windows files/account anymore and it really is unfortunate. Now I am FREAKING out, because this is a shared computer that my family uses (it's like a main computer in the house) and everyone's files are on this. It is extremely crucial for me to get these Windows files back because if I don't, my life will end tonight. Please, if someone can help me, I will love you forever. Please just help me, this is urgent. I'm sure a lot of people have experienced this too, but I have found nothing on the website helpful for me as Ubuntu is a very new thing for me.
