  • Writing a Windows NT subsystem

    I'd like to try writing my own minimal NT subsystem on Windows 7 for purely educational purposes -- something like a bare-bones equivalent of the posix.exe in Microsoft's Subsystem for Unix-based Applications. But I can't seem to find any public documentation on this topic. What API does a subsystem need to implement? How does it get registered with Windows? How does the subsystem image need to be built (what flags need to be set in the PE header, etc.)? I'd most like to find a book or web site with an overview of the entire subject, or even the source code for a "hello world" NT subsystem that someone else has written. But anything at all would be appreciated if you can point me in the right direction here...

  • Skydrive for desktop not showing icon in notification area

    is this normal behavior? I'm concerned that some files will not be transferred. For example. I need to be sure that its safe to put my laptop to sleep so that later when I'm on my desktop I wont have to open up my laptop and sync again if I closed it too early. It doesn't even appear when I THINK it is syncing. Thanks for any help in advance. edit 1: Yeah I know the app isn't required or even offered anymore, but what I was wondering was if they had some way to tell if it's syncing or not. The old desktop app had an icon in the notification area which had a animation for when it was syncing, but now there isn't anything there. Although when I try to go in and make it appear it says the application isn't active and the icon will show the next time it is. Its version is 17.0.2015.0811 Is it possible to force the icon to show in the notification area if it isn't designed to show up there at all? I basically just want the same functionality of Skydrive on windows 8.

  • Re-ordering Remote Desktop Connections

    I have the adminpak.msi installed so that I can use the Remote Desktop MMC to connect to all of my servers. As I add a server, it goes to the bottom of the list of available servers. I can't find out how to re-order them into more logical groupings, or at least alphabetical. Any ideas?

  • Robustly killing Windows programs stuck reporting 'problems'

    I am looking for a means to kill a Windows exe program that, when being tested from a python script, crashes and presents a dialog to the user; as this program is invoked many times, and may crash repeatedly, this is not suitable. The problem dialog is the standard reporting of a Windows error: "Foo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and offers a Debug, Send Error Report, and Don't Send buttons. I am able to kill other forms of dialog resulting from crashes (e.g. a Debug build's assert failure dialog is OK.) I have tried taskkill.exe, pskill, and the terminate() function on the Popen object from the subprocess module that was used to invoke the .exe Has anyone encountered this specific issue, and found a resolution? I expect automating user input to select the window, and press the "Don't Send" button is one possible solution, but I would like something far simpler if possible

  • Apache2.2 not responding on Windows 7 desktop

    Afternoon! I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't ever time out, the browser just keeps on waiting for a response, which makes me think it's something blocking communication with Apache. Interestingly though, if I stop Apache the requests fail immediately. The Apache service is running, and using netstat I can see it listening on port 80 as configured: TCP 127.0.0.1:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING If I stop the Apache service, that line disappears. I have an entry within my hosts file for each VHost I'm trying, all pointing to 127.0.0.1. Each VHost is configured to *:80. Nothing however is getting recorded in the access or error (at debug level) log files. I've verified the file paths are correct, even though they were never changed. Neither is anything getting recorded within Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however I hadn't been using it for a couple of days prior so I don't believe it's the config change. I have performed a syntax check to be sure, and when starting from the command prompt no errors are reported there. I do have Windows Firewall running, however I've verified the Apache rule is correct and tried turning it off to ensure that wasn't the problem. I've reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've also tried using a different port. I'm completely lost for ideas now.     How to rotate an ellipse (or any other object) with VB code? In XAML, I designed an ellipse and easily rotated it from the properties (Transform - Rotate - Angle). When I am trying to do it with VB code, I cannot locate the rotate/angle property of that ellipse. So, I tried this: Dim Rotator As RotateTransform Rotator.Angle = 90 Ellipse1.RenderTransform = Rotator It didn’t work. It says: Unable to cast object of type 'Windows.UI.Xaml.Media.MatrixTransform' to type 'Windows.UI.Xaml.Media.RotateTransform'. I think I’m close to the right way. Please give me a push. Thanks

The significance of an OS or desktop application is getting less attention than web application. So to those folks out there who still develop windows applications, such as WPF. Why still do it? Why not move to web programming? Silverlight instead for example...

  • Remove Registry Keys for Windows Phone 7 Emulator

    I am trying to get the updated Windows Phone 7 tools installed, but can't get rid of the old ones. The uninstaller wouldn't run, so I had to try more extreme means. I got everything removed except for "Microsoft Windows Phone Emulator x64". Does anyone know what vm_web.exe (the tool installer) is checking for (registry, file, etc.) that prevents the installer from running. I tried Aaron Stebner's clean up tool, and it helped a lot, but couldn't get rid of the emulator.

  • Windows 7 sharing data between users via the registry

    Where can I create/modify/delete registry keys to share data between users in the Windows 7 registry? Both of the users are non administrators and it shouldn't require admin privileges. The application I'm working on uses the registry to write a key from userA and then userB can read/modify/delete it. Neither user has admin privileges and it won't be possible to change this. Is there an official MSDN guide to how to use the registry in Windows 7? Any links describing proper use of the registry would be useful.

  • Administrative shares in Windows 7 Pro not visible

    My desktop machine has a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. For some reason the standard administrative shares Admin$, C$, D$, etc are not visible, either in Computer Management - Shared Folders - Shares or via net share. I also have a laptop with a clean install of Windows 7 Professional, and I can see the admin shares in both places. As such, I can map to \\laptop\c$ from the desktop, but I can't map to \\desktop\c$ from the laptop. I pretty much took the defaults during the Windows 7 installations. I've tried adding LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to the registry on the desktop, but that didn't work. On the desktop I've also disabled UAC, turned off Windows firewall, removed it from a homegroup, made sure file and printer sharing is turned on, but nothing has worked. There is some subtle difference between the two machines that I can't seem to find. I'm logging into both machines using a local account that is in the Administrators group. Both accounts have the same name and password. I really don't want to have to create a new share for the desktop's C drive, especially since C$ is visible and working on the laptop and therefore I should be able to make it work on the desktop. Any idea why the admin shares would work on one machine and not another? Or why LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy would fail?

    I have .Net service that listens on single port over TCP protocol. Clients connect and then transmit data for some time (from few minutes to several hours). Is there any limit on number of connections on Windows 2008 server? I did not hit any, since now there is up to 50 users. Plan is to have thousands of users, so I'd like to know if there will be problems in future. Edit: As Cloud answered, it seems that there are some limits in some versions of Windows Server 2008. Is there any reference on those limits? I tried Google, but it returns articles on limit on half-bound tcp connections.

  • Creating compound applications in Windows 7

    I need to port a suite of Windows applications (running under XP with little security turned on) to Windows 7 with various levels of security, depending on how our clients may configure it. Each functional area is a seperate executable or DLL that is downloaded and registered by a central 'compound' application. This means that the different parts are all joined together to form in effect a large single application. My problem is that the compound application knows about the other applications via COM registery, either as a typelibrary or as OCXs, where appropriate. I have tried several questions here to try and solve the problems I am getting, but I don't seem to be able to get around the problem of needing elevated access to register applications and access the registry. Our clients will be expecting the same (relatively) seemless download and activation process as current under XP. So does anyone have a solution for registering typelibraries and OCX controls without need to go through an elevation process. Thanks in advance
