• What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

  On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening. • Perf4j Not Logging to Separate File

  I setup some stop watch calls in my code to measure some code blocks and all the messages are going into my primary log and not into the timing log. The perfStats.log file gets created just fine but all the messages go to the root log which I didn't think was supposed to happen according to the docs I've read. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? • Making my site login "mirror" Facebook login

  I've noticed that Huffington Post does this: if you log out of there, it forces you to log out of Facebook as well, and if you log in on Facebook and go back to Huffington Post, it automatically logs you in there as well. Is this a straightforward use of the FB Connect API that I just haven't noticed, or is there some trick?

However, if I put www.domain2.com, everything works fine. I don't see any difference between two VirtualHost config block, so I wonder what does make the difference. • I need to Split a string based on a complex delimiter

  In C# I need to split a string (a log4j log file) into array elements based on a particular sequence of characters, namely "nnnn-nn-nn nn:nn:nn INFO". I'm currently splitting this log file up by newlines, which is fine except when the log statements themselves contain newlines. I don't control the input (the log file) so escaping them somehow is not an option. It seems like I should be able to use a comparator or a regex to identify the strings, but String.Split does not have an option like that. Am I stuck rolling my own, or is there a pattern or framework component that can be of help here?

• Jboss logging issue

  our application is deployed on jboos As 4.0x, we face some issues in jboss logging.. whenever the server is restarted, jboss stops logging , and there is no update in server.log. After that it is not updating the log file. then we do touch cmd on log4j.xml, so that it creates the log files again. Please help me in fixing the issue we cant do touch everytine. we face this issue in both the nodes. thanks, balaji

• Unexpected behavior of IntentService

  I used IntentService in my code instead of Service because IntentService creates a thread for me in onHandleIntent(Intent intent), so I don't have to create a Thead myself in the code of my service. I expected that two intents to the same IntentSerivce will execute in parallel because a thread is generated in IntentService for each invent. But my code turned out that the two intents executed in sequential way. It there anything I misunderstood of IntentService. To make two service intents execute in parallel, do I have to replace IntentService with service and start a thread myself in the service code? • try/catch: errors or exceptions?

  OK. I may be splitting hairs here, but my code isn't consistent and I'd like to make it so. But before I do, I want to make sure I'm going the right way. In practice this doesn't matter, but this has been bothering me for a while so I figured I'd ask my peers... Every time I use a try... catch statement, in the catch block I always log a message to my internal console. However my log messages are not consistent. They either look like: catch(err) { DFTools.console.log("someMethod caught an error: ",err.message); ... or: catch(ex) { DFTools.console.log("someMethod caught an exception: ",ex.message); ... Obviously the code functions properly either way but it's starting to bother me that I sometimes refer to "errors" and sometimes to "exceptions". Like I said, maybe I'm splitting hairs but which is the proper terminology? "Exception", or "Error"?

• Properly using Log4r in Ruby Application

  I must really be missing something obvious, but I'm having trouble with general use of Log4r in my Ruby application. I am able to log without issue, but the overhead seems clunky the way I have it setup. I'm basically passing the full path to a filename to log in each class in my application. The ruby script that is called pulls the log file from one of the arguments in ARGV which is then passed around and set in each class that I call in ruby. In each class I use the patternFormatter to insert the class/file name into the log statement. Is there a better way to make this work? It feels like no matter what I think of will require something to be passed to each class in my ruby application. I could set the log file in a yaml configuration file instead, but then I would be passing around the configuration file to each class as well. Any advice? If this doesn't make sense I could try and post some more specific code samples to further explain what I mean. Thanks!

  I am using triggers in MySQL to log changes to the data. These changes are recorded on a row level. I can now insert an entry in my log table for each row that is changed. However, I also need to record the operation to which the changes belong. For example, a delete operation like "DELETE * FROM table WHERE type=x" can delete multiple rows. With the trigger I can insert an entry for each deleted row into the log table, but I would like to also provide a unique identifier for the operation as a whole, so that the log table looks something like: log_id operation_id tablename fieldname oldvalue newvalue 1 1 table id 1 null 2 1 table type a null 3 1 table id 2 null 4 1 table type a null 5 2 table id 3 null 6 2 table type b null 7 2 table id 4 null 8 2 table type b null Is there a way in MySQL to identify the higher level operation to which the row changes belong? Or is this only possible by means of application level code? In the future it would also be nice to be able to record the transaction to which an operation belongs. Another question is if it is possible to capture the actual SQL query, besides using the query log. I don't think so myself, but maybe I am missing something. It is of course possible to capture these at the application level, but the goal is to keep intrusions to the application level code as minimal as possible. When this is not possible with MySQL, how is this with other database systems? For the current project it is not an option to use something other than MySQL, but it would be nice to know for future projects.

  I'm using apache+mod_wsgi for django. And all css/js/images are served through nginx. For some odd, reason when others/friends/colleagues try accessing the site, jquery/css is not getting loaded for them, hence the page looks jumbled up. My html files use code like this - <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://x.x.x.x:8000/css/custom.css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://1x.x.x.x:8000/js/custom.js"></script> My nginx configuration in sites-available is like this - server { listen 8000; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.error.log; location / { index index.html index.htm; } location /static/ { autoindex on; root /opt/aa/webroot/; } } There is a directory /opt/aa/webroot/static/ which have corresponding css & js directories. The odd thing is that the pages show fine when I access them. I have cleared my cache/etc, but the page loads fine for me, from various browsers. Also, I don't see 404 any error in the nginx log files. Any pointers would be great.

To start off with, I tried to get this php interface to play nice with wget and curl first because I'm more familiar with them. What matters it that using ROOT, I use a function called as socket.SendRaw(message, message.Length()) (socket is a TSocket) and this gives me the same "error" as wget without the post data switch if my "message" is "POST http://some.host.edu/log/log_query_matlab.php?hostname=localhost:3306&un=joeuser&pw=psswd&myquery=show_spazio_databases" This may be in vain, but does someone knows a way I should format the "message" that includes something that is equivalent to the --post-data switch. Or, is there a standard way to format POST requests in a single line (I've seen multi-line stuff. Is that right?) Sorry I'm clueless! PS. The mysql query is show databases but the space has been replaced with _spazio_, Italian for space. The author of the db and php interface requires it (and various replacements for symbols), but has anyone seen this before? Trying to troubleshoot that was terrible!
