• Text replacement for multiple script/config files

  I am doing some sort of science with a combination of Python, bash scripts and configuration files with weird syntaxes from old C programs. To run different tests, I have to tune (open text file, edit and save) a number of these files, but it is getting harder and harder to remember which files to edit. Also, the tasks are very repetitive and I end having a bunch of comment lines, switching on and off the settings for a specific run. I dream of a tool that can keep a list of files (regardless of the file format) and allow me to centrally choose from a predefined list of "profiles", taking care of editing the script/config files. For example lets say I have a config and script file: config.cfg var1 = 1.0 #var1 = 1.5 script.sct function(200.0) #function(300.0) I would like to instead have auxiliary text files: config.cfg.tem var1 = $$var1$$ script.sct.tem function($$par1$$) and in a central script or even better, a GUI, just switch from profile1 (e.g. var1=1.0,par1=200.0) to profile2 (e.g. var1=1.5,par1=300.0), and the tool to automatically update the text files. Any idea if such a tools exists?

• How to send java.util.logging to log4j?

  I have an existing application which does all of its logging against log4j. We use a number of other libraries that either also use log4j, or log against Commons Logging, which ends up using log4j under the covers in our environment. One of our dependencies even logs against slf4j, which also works fine since it eventually delegates to log4j as well. Now, I'd like to add ehcache to this application for some caching needs. Previous versions of ehcache used commons-logging, which would have worked perfectly in this scenario, but as of version 1.6-beta1 they have removed the dependency on commons-logging and replaced it with java.util.logging instead. Not really being familiar with the built-in JDK logging available with java.util.logging, is there an easy way to have any log messages sent to JUL logged against log4j, so I can use my existing configuration and set up for any logging coming from ehcache? Looking at the javadocs for JUL, it looks like I could set up a bunch of environment variables to change which LogManager implementation is used, and perhaps use that to wrap log4j Loggers in the JUL Logger class. Is this the correct approach? Kind of ironic that a library's use of built-in JDK logging would cause such a headache when (most of) the rest of the world is using 3rd party libraries instead.

• Background loading javascript into iframe with using jQuery/Ajax?

  I'm working on an offline only help system which requires loading a large amount of search-related data into an iframe before the search functionality can be used. Due to the folder structure of the project, I am unable to use Ajax-related background load methods, since the files I need are loaded a few directories "up and over." I have written some code which delays the loading of the help data until the rest of the webpage is loaded. The help data consists of a bunch of javascript files which have information about the terms, ect that exist in the help books which are installed on the system. The webpage works fine, until I start to load this help data into a hidden iframe. While the javascript files are loading, I can not use any of the webpage. Links that require a small files be downloaded for hover over effects don't show up, javascript (switching tabs on the page) has no effect. I'm wondering if this is just a limitation of the way javascript works, or if there's something else going on here. • Is there a point to have multiple VS projects for an ASP.NET MVC application?

  I'm developing MVC application where I currently have 3 projects in solution. Core (it is supposed to be for Repositories, Business Classes, Models, HttpModules, HttpFilters, Settings, etc.) Data access (Data provider, for instance SqlDataProvider for working with SQL Server datastore - implements Repository interfaces, XmlDataProvider - also implements Repository interfaces but for local XML files as datastore) ASP.NET MVC project (all the typical stuff, UI, controllers, content, scripts, resources and helpers). I have no Models in my ASP.NET MVC project. I've just run into a problem because of that coz I want to use the new DataAnnotation feature in MVC 2 on my Bussiness class, which are, as said in Core, however I have I want to be able to localize the error messages. This where my problem starts. I cannot use my Resources from MVC project in Core. The MVC project references Core and it cannot be vice-versa. My options as I see them are: 1) Move Resources out but this would require correcting a whole bunch of Views and Controllers where I reference them, 2) Make a complete restructure of my app What are your thoughts on this? Also, Should I just move everything business related into Models folder in MVC project?? Does it even make any sense to have it structured like that, because we can just make subfolders for everything under MVC project? The whole Core library is not intended to ever be used for anything else, so there actually no point of compiling it to a separate DLL. Suggestions appreciated.

• Why is android:transcriptMode="normal" not working properly?

  I've been doing a lot of fiddling with an issue I've been having. What happens is each time an item gets added to my listview (adapter) I expect it to auto-scroll if I'm at the last item (which it will do to an extent); HOWEVER, if 3 or more items get added at once, it will not auto-scroll. Here is the XML of that listview: <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:transcriptMode="normal"/> I tried a workaround using a snippet I found here. Any suggestions?

• jQuery: Triggering a click on an img not working

  I'm testing in Chrome. I have a bunch of 'add item' icons on screen that the user can click in order to add that one item to the database. I also have a button at the botton of that list, which should add the whole list of items. It seems to me that the easiest way to do this is to trigger the 'click' event for all these icons (the reason I'm doing it via the icons is that items-specific values are stored as attributes of the div in which the icon resides). However, I can't get it to work: the event handlers for the individual icons work perfectly, and the event handler for the add-them-all button does give me an alert if I put that in. But if I add the I read some posts that suggest browsers don't allow you to trigger click events, so I added a 'hover' event listener to the icons to see if the problem is in the type of event I want to trigger. Answer: no, same story: the alert will work, but the trigger won't. I have placed the icon event listener in the code before the button event listener. What's going on? Twecs

• Using enum values to represent binary operators (or functions)

  I'm looking for an elegant way to use values in a Java enum to represent operations or functions. My guess is, since this is Java, there just isn't going to be a nice way to do it, but here goes anyway. My enum looks something like this: public enum Operator { LT, LTEQ, EQEQ, GT, GTEQ, NEQ; ... } where LT means < (less than), LTEQ means <= (less than or equal to), etc - you get the idea. Now I want to actually use these enum values to apply an operator. I know I could do this just using a whole bunch of if-statements, but that's the ugly, OO way, e.g.: int a = ..., b = ...; Operator foo = ...; // one of the enum values if (foo == Operator.LT) { return a < b; } else if (foo == Operator.LTEQ) { return a <= b; } else if ... // etc What I'd like to be able to do is cut out this structure and use some sort of first-class function or even polymorphism, but I'm not really sure how. Something like: int a = ..., b = ...; Operator foo = ...; return foo.apply(a, b); or even int a = ..., b = ...; Operator foo = ...; return a foo.convertToOperator() b; But as far as I've seen, I don't think it's possible to return an operator or function (at least, not without using some 3rd-party library). • Best way to do client/server validation in ASP.NET in 2010?

  First there was the ASP.NET validators and we used them... Then some people on the team did things manually in javascript... Then a bunch of jquery validation libraries came out... Then MVC2 came out with attributes as validators.. I work with apps that have alot of forms with alot of various validation (Some fields needs to be compared with other values in a DB so a postball/ajax call is required) .. Right now I have a mess of ASP.NET custom validators and functions that calculate on the server side as well. Can I get some opinions on the best tool/combination to approach this job that can create the smallest/most elegant code? Pure server side solution? AJAX/Jquery? A certain plugin for jquery? For example, I have 2 dates.. I want to make sure that the 1st date is less than the 2nd date... Are there jquery validators that encapsulate this? My feeling is if I can get jquery plugins to handle half the more basic validation for my that could cut my code in half.

On page load I want to show 'foo' and 'thumbnails' and hide the three content divs. As the user clicks each thumbnail, I want to hide foo, and replace it with the matching 'content-x'. I can get my head round jQuery show, hide and replace (although, bonus points if you want to include that in your example!). But how would I extract and construct the appropriate content id, from the thumbnail class, then pass it to the show hide code?

• C++ Instantiate class and add name to array/vector then cycle through update functions from the array

  I have a bunch of classes in a basic (and badly coded!) game engine that are currently instantiated in the code and have to have their individual update functions called. What I want to do is be able to create an instance of a class, pass the name to an array, and then subsequently cycle through the array to call the update functions of each class. I'm unsure as to whether or not this is an impossible or spectacularly stupid way of trying to manage objects, so please tell me if it is. So currently I might have manually instantiated Enemy class a couple of times: Enemy enem1; Enemy enem2; I then have to update them manually in the game loop: enem1.update(); enem2.update(); What method should I use to be able to spawn and destroy instances of the enemy class during gametime? Is it possible to populate an array with instantiated names and then do something like (and i'm aware this doesn't work); array[x].update(); Then iterate through the names in the array? Anything that even points me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

• Recommendation for using equals in Entities and avoiding LazyInitializationExceptions?

  In the beginning there is a problem that wants to be solved. In my case i got an LazyInitializationException while using indexof in a Collection to retrieve an Object for manipulation. Here i start to think about using equals in EntityBeans (OR-Mapper at all). I know there are some discussions about overriding equals in association with OR-Mapper as hibernate like [1] Entities equals(), hashCode() and toString(). How to correctly implement them? [2] To equals and hashcode or not on entity classes, that is the question. [3] Overriding equals and hashCode in Java I currently have some entities which implements the equals but inside the code i could not use equals several times because of the LazyInitializationExceptions. So i had to workaround and use eg. the name property of the object to identify it's equality. From my point of view the whole 'LazyInitializationException-thing' is not really mentioned in this questions. I'd like to know have you got some good patterns or real live recommendations how to avoid such exception in an equal-Method. Shall i use some helper Methodes to distinguish if a Object of a class is already initialized (4) or should i apdicate the use of equals and use helper classes instead (2)? And what is about catching LazyInitializationExceptions in the equals? [Edit]: If you put equals in context with the initialization of the Object then it will gain importance. Sometimes it is nessesary to have the Object fully initialized but sometimes you don't want to. Because you just need the Object itself (name, id, ...) not its Collection-Properties. So just for equalization you have to reattach the Object and load the whole bunch you don't realy need? Are there any other solutions for such a problem?

• Effective simulation of compound poisson process in Matlab

  I need to simulate a huge bunch of compound poisson processes in Matlab on a very fine grid so I am looking to do it most effectively. I need to do a lot of simulations on the same random numbers but with parameters changing so it is practical to draw the uniforms and normals beforehand even though it means i have to draw a lot more than i will probably need and won't matter much because it will only need to be done once compared to in the order 500*n repl times the actual compound process generation. My method is the following: Let T be for how long i need to simulate and N the grid points, then my grid is: t=linspace(1,T,N); Let nrepl be the number of processes i need then I simulate P=poissrnd(lambda,nrepl,1); % Number of jumps for each replication U=(T-1)*rand(10000,nrepl)+1; % Set of uniforms on (1,T) for jump times N=randn(10000,nrepl); % Set of normals for jump size Then for replication j: Poiss=P(j); % Jumps for replication Uni=U(1:Poiss,j);% Jump times Norm=mu+sigma*N(1:Poiss,j);% Jump sizes Then this I guess is where I need your advice, I use this one-liner but it seems very slow: CPP_norm=sum(bsxfun(@times,bsxfun(@gt,t,Uni),Norm),1); In the inner for each jump it creates a series of same length as t with 0 until jump and then 1 after, multiplying this will create a grid with zeroes until jump has arrived and then the jump size and finally adding all these will produce the entire jump process on the grid. • Changing the value of a variable

  I'm trying to build a simple scoring app but I'm running into a problem trying to keep it so I don't have to repeat a bunch of code to deal with each 'base' individually. The basic idea is that when I click a button the script will; 1) grab the ID of said button 2) split the ID into two parts - (a) the bases name and (b) the button type (plus/minus) 3) if it's plus - add to the bases score, if it's minus - subtract from the bases score 4) update the assigned div with the new value The part I'm stuck at is adding and subtracting. I can't seem to get this to work.   I have a bunch of table rows such as: <tr> <td>cell1</td> <td>cell2</td> <td><a href="action.php">cell3</a></td> </tr> <tr class="notes_row"> <td colspan="6"> <ul class="message warning no-margin" id="notes_box"> <li>Notes here</li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>cell1</td> <td>cell2</td> <td><a href="action.php">cell3</a></td> </tr> The class="notes_row" is only there if notes are present for the row above it. How can I hide the tr and if its there the tr with the notes_row class below it without affecting the other rows using jquery? So if someone clicked cell3 the tr that link is in is hidden then if there is a notes table row below it, it hides that as well.

• How (and if) to write a single-consumer queue using the task parallel library?

  I've heard a bunch of podcasts recently about the TPL in .NET 4.0. Most of them describe background activities like downloading images or doing a computation, using tasks so that the work doesn't interfere with a GUI thread. Most of the code I work on has more of a multiple-producer / single-consumer flavor, where work items from multiple sources must be queued and then processed in order. One example would be logging, where log lines from multiple threads are sequentialized into a single queue for eventual writing to a file or database. All the records from any single source must remain in order, and records from the same moment in time should be "close" to each other in the eventual output. So multiple threads or tasks or whatever are all invoking a queuer: lock( _queue ) // or use a lock-free queue! { _queue.enqueue( some_work ); _queueSemaphore.Release(); } And a dedicated worker thread processes the queue: while( _queueSemaphore.WaitOne() ) { lock( _queue ) { some_work = _queue.dequeue(); } deal_with( some_work ); } It's always seemed reasonable to dedicate a worker thread for the consumer side of these tasks. Should I write future programs using some construct from the TPL instead? Which one? Why?

• QTime or QTimer wait for timeout

  I'm writting a Qt application, and I have a four hour loop (in a seperate thread). In that four hour loop, I have to: do stuff with the serial port; wait a fixed period of time; do some more stuff with the serial port; wait an arbitrary amount of time. when 500ms have past, do more stuff; Go to 1. and repeat for four hours. Currently, my method of doing this is really bad, and crashes some computers. I have a whole bunch of code, but the following snippet basically shows the problem. The CPU goes to ~100% and eventually can crash the computer. void CRelayduinoUserControl::wait(int timeMS) { int curTime = loopTimer->elapsed(); while(loopTimer->elapsed() < curTime + timeMS); } I need to somehow wait for a particular amount of time to pass before continuing on with the program. Is there some function which will just wait for some arbitrary period of time while keeping all the timers going?

But this is not working on this case because the routes don't exists without the shop_id parameter, and I don't know how to say to the form_for something like this: <% form_for [:backshop, @item], :shop_id => @shop do |f| %> Because it tries to use the @item like the :shop_id parameter. Or like this <% form_for [:backshop, @shop, @item] do |f| %> Because it tries to build this url: backshop_shop_order_path I Know I can just to extract the form_for declaration from the partial and do different calls on depending if new or edit: <% form_for( @item, :url => backshop_items_path( @shop ) ) do |f| %> and <% form_for( @item, :url => backshop_item_path( @shop, @item ) ) do |f| %> But I just wanted don't do this because I have a bunch of models and is a few boring :) Thanks for any suggestion f.

• Simplify my menu animation code

  I've got a bunch of 'project' divs that I want to expand when they're clicked on. If there's already a project open, I want to hide it before I slide out the new one. I also want to stop clicks on an already open project from closing and then opening it again.   I have a search form with inputs and selects, and when any input/select is changed i run some js and then make an ajax query with jquery. I want to stop the user from making further changes to the form while the request is in progress, as at the moment they can initiate several remote searches at once, effectively causing a race between the different searches. It seems like the best solution to this is to prevent the user from interacting with the form while waiting for the request to come back. At the moment i'm doing this in the dumbest way possible by hiding the form before making the ajax query and then showing it again on success/error. This solves the problem but looks horrible and isn't really acceptable. Is there another, better way to prevent interaction with the form? To make things more complicated, to allow nice-looking selects, the user actually interacts with spans which have js hooked up to them to tie them to the actual, hidden, selects. So, even though the spans aren't inputs, they are contained in the form and represent the actual interactive elements of the form. Grateful for any advice - max. • Building html structure in php or javascript?

  I've been doing a lot of ajax calls and using the returned data to build html with javascript. However, I've noticed some people are returning the constructed html in the ajax calls since they're doing it all in php. What is the preferred method? I have a bunch of stuff already using javascript, so I guess I would prefer not changing everything to use just php. But, I'm assuming php would be more "secure."? • Which approach is better in term of saving the data? How to handle this?

  Hi there I have Telerik grid within a Telerik grid. Due to I have a different view between insert and edit mode, so as per suggested I have to use UserControl instead. Inside this control, it could have another Telerik grid plus bunch of ASP.NET textboxes. This thing works well. My dilemma is this: Scenario 1: Handling the save in the user control - OnClick event I have a button to save this. I need to get the value of the "selected grid" so I am using this snippet below and again works well. foreach (GridDataItem dataItem in radgrdTariffNetworkDistributorRateItems.SelectedItems) { string ID = dataItem.OwnerTableView.DataKeyValues[dataItem.ItemIndex]["SupplierRateItemID"].ToString(); } But then how do I get the id of the parent grid where this control sit? I use the following this event to save: protected void bttnNetworkTariffReviewItemInsert_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) the e of course not the right one though?!?!? How do I make this feasible? Logically, I should handle this at the user control level to save but again because the user control relying on the child grid I am having trouble to get this value. • Background loading javascript into iframe without using jQuery/Ajax?

  I'm working on an offline only help system which requires loading a large amount of search-related data into an iframe before the search functionality can be used. Due to the folder structure of the project, I am unable to use Ajax-related background load methods, since the files I need are loaded a few directories "up and over." I have written some code which delays the loading of the help data until the rest of the webpage is loaded. The help data consists of a bunch of javascript files which have information about the terms, ect that exist in the help books which are installed on the system. The webpage works fine, until I start to load this help data into a hidden iframe. While the javascript files are loading, I can not use any of the webpage. Links that require a small files be downloaded for hover over effects don't show up, javascript (switching tabs on the page) has no effect. I'm wondering if this is just a limitation of the way javascript works, or if there's something else going on here. • PHP array minor problem

  I'm really not sure how to explain this. It's so simple I can't fathom why it's not working. I have a loop. It puts a bunch of strings into an array. If I fill a single variable with any given string, it will output it perfectly. But filling an array with the strings will make it give me the dreaded: Array Array Array Array Array Array Array Array Note: my strings are not all 'Array'.
