• What are the advantages and disadvantages to using your real name online?

  As a programmer, do you see any professional or other advantage in using your real name in online discourse, versus an invented handle? I've always gone by a single username and had my real name displayed whenever possible, for a few reasons: My interests online are almost exclusively professional and aboveboard. It constructs a search-friendly public log of all of my work, everywhere. If someone wants to contact me, there are many ways to do it. My portfolio of work is all tied to me personally. Possible cons to full disclosure include: If you feel like becoming involved in something untoward, it could be harder. The psychopath who inherits your project can more easily find out where you live. You might be spammed by people who are not worth the precious time that could be better spent writing more of the brilliant software you're famous for. Your portfolio of work is all tied to you personally. It seems, anyway, that a vast majority of StackOverflow users go by invented handles rather than real names. Notable exceptions include the best-known users, who are typically well established in the industry. But how could we ever become legendary rockstar programmers if we didn't get our names out there? Discuss.

• Why does my name resolution hit the DNS even with a hosts file entry?

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Desktop. Being a web developer, naturally I created a "me.com" in my /etc/hosts file. Unfortunately, my name resolution is going out to the DNS before first checking my local hosts entry and I can't figure out why. The end result is that if my /etc/resolv.conf contains "nameserver 127.0.0.1" in there first, then I get a response back in my web browser from me.com (local) within less than a second. But if I don't have that entry, then my response takes sometimes as much as 5 seconds if my ISP is a little slow. The problem was so troublesome that I actually had to file a question here (and someone resolved it) for how to automatically insert that entry into /etc/resolv.conf. But one of the users (@shellaholic) here highly recommended (and commented back and forth with me about it) that I should file this question. Do you know why my workstation's name resolution has to hit the DNS server first before hitting my /etc/hosts file entry? For now, I'm using the resolv.conf trick (see link above).

• Problems with mounting .ISO files

  I'm using Precise, with GNOME. I've attempted to install some retro, multi-cd games (KOTOR1) via .ISO images and WINE, but I can't get the ISO's to mount correctly. First I tried GMountISO, which showed a read-only warning but worked - until I went to unmount. When the installation program asked for CD 2 I couldn't unmount from the /cdrom folder because neither GMountISO or umount from terminal could detect the mount. After a reboot, I changed to GISOMount (different somehow, I guess?), but when I attempt to mount the ISO I get an error window explaining the syntax of the mount command and, which is also what I get when I attempt to use mount from terminal. After checking /media from terminal on a lark I see the disc mounted there twice over, but umount won't recognize it, even when I specify the full path sudo umount /media/KOTOR_1.iso. It cleared up upon reboot. Can someone please assist? UPDATE :: Thanks for the quick response. What's weird, is the images are like stuck in limbo... • My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. No idea what this is or why it's running. When I try and kill arecord (as root), it just respawns and rebinds on the hardware. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. • How to run installation CD for second monitor?

  I am running ubuntu 14 off of a live USB. I have a second monitor that I would like to use while using ubuntu. It has an installation cd that you have to install before using, and when I click on the .exe file the Archive Manager tries to open it and says an error occurred while loading the archive. Thanks for the help. Edit: additional information It just doesn't show up when when I'm in the display settings area. I press the locate(name is probably something else) monitor button too. I know it needs the CD because when I was using it with Windows it didn't work until I went through the installation process on the CD. If ubuntu doesn't use .exe files is there a way to use the CD still? • What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

• Discs in DVD Drive not being read

  Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore. • How to connect to a wireless network that has a two word name with a space?

  Ok, I have searched for some time in earnest for an answer to this question. I have a Beagleboard which has Ubuntu 10.10 Minimal install for Arm running on it. With the default install, minimal tools, no GUI, I am unable to connect to my wireless network. The name of my network is "MYNAME NETWORK". Using a text editor to edit /etc/network/interfaces I can not seem to connect at all. As an experiment, I connected to a friends network, which has a one word name "dystek",and was able to connect with Zero issues, and update and install a full GUI for ubuntu Arm. The problem is that I don't want a full blown gui on the beagleboard, just a minimal install of ubuntu with CLI is all I need or want. Is there anyway to connect to my wireless network via editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. Surely there is... I just don't know how. • Is a big name computer science degree worth the cost?

  I'm currently in High School and trying to look into what I want to do after I graduate. I know that I will be going to college, and that I want a degree in Computer Science, however, I'm not entirely sure where I want to go (I haven't started the application process yet). I already have built up a decent amount of experience in programming (over the summers I have been hired to program at a local university), and I'm pretty capable of teaching myself most of the material I've come across through either books or web documentation. I'm interested in whether it is worth it to get a degree from a major, big-name computer science university for $50,000 each year, as opposed to going to a local state school for only $20,000. For my Bachelor's degree alone, this would be $120,000 more than the state school. I've also heard that where you get your Bachelor's doesn't matter much if you plan to get a Master's degree. Many people recommend going somewhere like a state school for your Bachelor's, and then try to get into a more major school for your Master's. Has anybody found any truth in this? Basically, is going to a big name computer science school for a Bachelor's degree really worth the added expense?

I have two classes like this: class A: ... function collision(self): .... ... class B: .... function _collision(self, another_object, l, r, t, b): .... The first class has one public method named collision, and the second has one private method called _collision. The two methods differs in argument type and number. As an example let's say that _collision checks if the object is colliding with another object with certain conditions l, r, t, b (collide on the left side, right side, etc) and returns true or false. The public collision method, on the other hand, resolves all the collisions of the object with other objects. The two methods have the same name because I think it's better to avoid overloading the design with different names for methods that do almost the same thing, but in distinct contexts and classes. Is this clear enough to the reader or I should change the method's name?

• ATI Radeon 5800 series dual monitor unity not 3D accelerated

  When I had a single monitor setup, without Xinerama, with my current setup of Ubuntu 11.10, ATI 5800 series card, Unity showed transparencies, shadows, etc. (although graphics was reported as 'Standard' in the control/settings panel). Having switched to a dual monitor setup, dell 24" UltraSharp and a smaller Acer monitor, Unity shows only as 2d, even though I'm not loggin in to that display manager. WebGL performance is very sluggish, I'm getting the impression that the processor is doing all the work and the card isn't even accessible even though the drivers are installed (from the ubuntu repository, I did not compile custom drivers). Any tips on how to enable full 3D accelerationn and video card support. • Bluetooth not working on Acer 3820tg (Ubuntu 12.04)

  After upgrading to 12.04 (it was done by a complete reinstallation), bluetooth doesn't work anymore. Before (I think it was Ubuntu 11.04), I just followed instructions on this page and copied /lib/firmware/ath3k-2.fw to /lib/firmware/ath3k-1.fw and everything was fine. But in 12.04, there isn't any ath3k-2.fw in the /lib directory, so this method is not possible. Also, pressing Fn+F3 doesn't work. I would appreciate any help. • ATI Radeon HD with Catalyst driver stuck mirroring screens

  In 11.10 I replaced my aging Nvidia card with a new Radeon HD 6970 card. The single card has two DVI output ports which I've connected to two monitors. I installed Catalyst version 11.9 and I cannot get multiple monitors set up the way I want. I tried: $ sudo amdcccle and setting the mode to single desktop multiple monitors and whenever I do that Unity crashes and I get back to the login screen. Nothing shows up in the Xorg.*.log files for me to post here. There's only one card so I don't think xinerama would be any help here. Anyone have any ideas? • SD card won't appear after upgrade to 13.10

  My SD card won't mount when I put it into my lap top, everything was fine before the upgrade. The information about the SD card appears just fine when I type "sudo fdisk l " it just says that it doesn't have a valid partition table. • How do you avoid name similarities between your classes and the native ones?

  I just ran into an "interesting problem", which I would like your opinion about: I am developing a system and for many reasons (meaning: abstraction, technology independence, etc) we create our own types for exchanging information. For instance: if there is a method which is called SendEmail and is invoked by the business logic, it way have a parameter of type OurCompany.EMailMessage, which is an object which is completely technology independent and contains only "business relevant data" (for instance, no information abut head encoding). Inside the SendEmail function, we get this information from our EMailMEssage object and create a MailMessage (this one is technolgy specific) object so it can be sent over the network. As you can already notice, our class has a very similar name to the "native" language class. The problem is: this is exactly what they are, email messages, so it is hard to find another meaningful name for them. Do you have this problem often? How do you manage it? Edit: @mgkrebbs just commented about using fully qualified names. This is our current approach, but a little bit too verbose, IMHO. I would like something cleaner, if possible.

  I am working on an issue with my Ubuntu 13.10 installation. I am attempting to get 4 monitors up and running but I am having some trouble. So far, I installed and updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers (331.20). Initially X would not start (after installation) so I replaced my xorg.conf with xorg.conf.failsafe. This fixed that problem, but then I tried to enable the other 2 monitors (other video card) and xorg fails to start once again (after I login there is no desktop). • Which is the best way to catch an expiring domain name? [closed]

  I know a similar question has been asked, but I really don't know what to do. There is this .com domain which is currently on redemption period and should likely be available again within a month. I was wondering which is the best way to get it at a reasonable price. I don't think it's a highly valuable domain, it shows to have very bad ranking and has 0 exact same searches according to adwords. Why it is valuable to me is very simple: I have a project responding to this name. I already own the .net domain and would love to have the .com. I discovered the domain was going to be available thanks to an email I received by a backorder site. I did some research and these guys have a bad reputation on the web. I did further research and found that more reputable (at least in theory) companies should be the likes of snapnames, pool, namejet, godaddy, etc. I am a bit suspicious using these drop cathing services: What if they shill bids? What if they make it go into auction even if I'm the only person interested? What if I raise attention and interest to the domain by backordering? I just would rather wait for it to be deleted and available again to register it manually. It is really not an interesting domain name, and I don't think anyone would care to have it. But what if the domain is already being watched by the domain industry sharks? I did a whois research and my desired domain nameserves point to domcollect.com, which appears to be an auction site. What if I decide to wait for manual registration and I miss the chance to get it? I'm willing to spend the 60/70$ fees these sites require, but not really more than that. Suggestions? Thank you very much. I'm a bit confused and undecided.

  I've been troubled by drop outs in CPU usage in my application server, characterized by the CPUs suddenly going from close to 90% CPU busy to almost completely CPU idle for a few seconds. I explored many theories trying to explain the drop outs, including: Unexpected JMeter behavior Network contention Java Garbage Collection Application Server thread pool problems Connection pool problems Database transaction processing Database I/O contention Graphing the CPU %idle led to a breakthrough: Several of the drop outs were 30 seconds apart. With that insight, I went digging through the data again and looking for other outliers that were 30 seconds apart. In the database server statistics, I found spikes in the iostat "asvc_t" (average response time of disk transactions, in milliseconds) for the disk drive that was being used for the database log files. Storage for the database was on a storage array connected via 8 gigabit Fibre Channel Data storage and log file were on different physical disk drives Reliable low latency I/O is provided by battery backed NVRAM Highly available: Two Fibre Channel links accessed via MPxIO Two Mirrored cache controllers The log file physical disks were mirrored in the storage device Database log files on a ZFS Filesystem with cutting-edge technologies, such as copy-on-write and end-to-end checksumming Why would I be getting service time spikes in my high-end storage? First, I wanted to verify that the database log disk service time spikes aligned with the application server CPU drop outs, and they did: At first, I guessed that the disk service time spikes might be related to flushing the write through cache on the storage device, but I was unable to validate that theory. After searching the WWW for a while, I decided to try using a separate log device: # zpool add ZFS-db-41 log c3t60080E500017D55C000015C150A9F8A7d0 The ZFS log device is configured in a similar manner as described above: two physical disks mirrored in the storage array. • WiX major upgrade refuses to replace existing file!

  Hello! I have inherited this project with a WiX installer, and am required to make this version usefully upgrade the previous one! My problem comes in replacing the database files with new versions. No, the problem is not that they are locked, I can replace them manually, and in fact now ONE of them is replaced, while the other is not. Please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried several other solutions (including registry keys as KeyPath instead of CompanionFile) but nothing is quite working. ALMOST WORKS. The file that is giving me trouble is the one called "PathwaysMdf". Even though it's Component code is EXACTLY the same as the PathwaysLdf file, that file is replaced, while the MDF is NOT. You can see, commented out, some of the other things I've attempted, some from suggestions on stackoverflow.   I'm unable to retrieve data from an XML document, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm using PHP 5.2.10 and the WSDL url is an internal link within my company. So it leads me to believe I'm not formatting the vars or headers correctly with PHP. I also tried passing in a xml fragment as the param but that returns the same error.
