• Login Screen hangs after entering password

  When I enter my password in the login box nothing happens. It gets stuck. It was running fine earlier. I have installed gnome-panel and cairo-dock, after which, I logged out, logged back in, and choose gnome classic session. I also added a ppa from the webupd8.org to install the themes (link). I opened Ubuntu Tweak tool, and changed the theme to Evolve the whole laptop stopped responding. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. So I was forced to do a shut down. Now whenever it starts, I cannot login into Ubuntu. I hear the fan noise, as its spinning very fast, when the laptop freezes.(Probably the CPU is running at 100%). Please help me. How can I login back to Ubuntu? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and have installed all the latest updates.. EDIT: I want to know how can I delete a folder from the file system using the live CD?

  I have this sam e question on StackOverflow and I was advised to ask it here hoping for more information. Here is the question: I am in rather unfavorable situation. I have aspdotneststore front e-commerce application and search addon called VibeTrib. I dont have source code for both of those. Store that runs on StoreFront and VibeTrib has close to 250k products. Also we have lots of filters. I spoke to ViTrib reps, and they want extra money so they could optimize Queries that they use. Money they require is nto a big deal, but the problem is I dont trust them anymore. What we got is much different then wha is being advertised. To cut the long story short. I am runing the store on Amazon AWS now, and regardless of what DB (MsSQL 2012) server I set (I tried 32GB RAM monsters instances) it is slow. Ajax search uses Full Text search and it displays search keywords relatively fast, but once the search is performed ( to display all results) it is still slow.!!! There is something that I could to do accelerate the speed on my own end? I do have full control over EC2 Instance (Web server Server 2012 and IIS 8). Can I set IIS to step in for the search and cache some of it? I was hoping to cache at least some most common words. My best bet is IIS 8 :) Is there any help in my case? Thanks

Personally I love IE for many reasons such as ease of use and stability.  I am cranked up to see what IE 9 does as it was retooled from the start. So this one should be big. Also, its bringing HTML 5 support now so we can have much richer applications. Its about time that HTML was revved to move from the old text like stuff to a better model. • Audio not working in 12.10

  I did a clean install of 12.10, when I open Sound Settings in gnome the only device in the list is "Dummy Output", and sound is not working. Sound worked fine out of the box in 12.04 I ran alsamixer, it says my card is "HDA Intel", and chip is "Realtek ALC880". The alsamixer playback output was set to mute at first, unmuting did not fix. I checked out the info at http://www.unixmen.com/2012003-howto-resolve-nosound-problem-on-ubuntu/ as suggested on a similar question, I've done everything there except installing the ubuntu audio dev team driver. Should I try install this? • Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website?   I would like to use Bullet Physics engine to simulate the objects in 3D world. One of the objects in the world will move using the position from 3D mouse control. I will call it "Mouse Object" and any object in the world as "Object A" I define the time before "mouse object" and "Object A" collide as t-1 The time "mouse object" penetrate "Object A" as t Now there is a problem about rendering the scene because when I move the mouse very fast, "Mouse object" will reside in "Object A" before "Object A" start to move. I would like the "Mouse Object" to stop right away attach to the "Object A". Also If the "Object A" move, the "Mouse object" should move following (attach) the "Object A" without stop at the first collision take place. This is what i did I find the position of the "Mouse Object" at time t-1 and time t. I will name it as pos(t-1) and pos(t) The contact time will be sometime between t-1 to t, which the time of contact I name it as t_contact, therefore the contact position (without penetration) between "Mouse object" and "Object A" will be pos(t_contact) then I create multiple "Mouse object"s using this equation pos[n] = pos(t-1) * C * ( pos(t) - pos(t-1) ) where 0 <= C <= 1 if I choose C = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3,0.4..... 1.0, I will get pos[n] for 10 values Then I test collision for all of these 10 "Mouse Objects" and choose the one that seperate between "no collision" and "collision". I feel this method is super non-efficient. I am not sure the way other people find the time-of-contact or the position-of-contact when "Object A" can move.

• What is the simplest way for a slippy SVG visualization?

  I have a big SVG file representing a complicated graph with hundreds of points. I want to represent this in a web page. My idea was that I could make it like Google Maps represent their maps, in those slippy, dragable, moveable maps. I'am looking for an easy and fast JavaScript library which could do the work. What I need for my "map" is the drag/move, zoom ability, and some way to click on the points of the picture, which makes a little information apear about that point, like Google maps markers. I'am looking for a free/open source library. I saw some solutions but I'am uncertain about them, and none of them seemed to be perfet: Polymaps - I love the technique it uses, but I don't know much about this library. Leaflet - I love the simplicity of it, but I dont know how could I apply it for my SVG. Raphael - I heard the awesomeness of this, but It seemed a lots of work to do this task. What would be the best/easiest solution for my problem, and what is your opinion aboute the above libraries?

• New Workstation &ndash; Lenovo W530 Core i7 32GB 256GB SSD Win8Pro

  So I pretty-much have my new machine up and running full-time. I am still going to have to hit my old workstation for some things but am more-or-less working on my new machine.  It’s really fast. And Bret was right, I’m not so far using all the RAM. 16 would have been enough but as @CodeMonkeyJava “go big or go home”. Windows 8 is…interesting.  So far I still seem to do most of my work in the “Desktop”.  However, I like the Store concept and I like the Metro UX.  Live tiles are also nice.  I really like how I can switch between Desktop and Metro easily.  Overall I think Microsoft has done a great job of combining the needed experience for touch and mouse. My overall Windows 8 rating is 5.9 because of the video card. Otherwise I’m hitting 7.8.  The system boots from cold in about 11 seconds and performs complete shutdown in 4.7 seconds.  It wakes from sleep in less than 1 second. VS 2012 starts and restarts almost instantly.  In fact, I find myself staring at the start page without realizing it.  Build time doesn’t seem to be significantly increased but it is faster. I seem to already be reinvigorated for work with this new machine. I’m looking forward to the performance.

• How do I add a boot from cd option to yaboot?

  So I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my iMac G5 powepc alongside Mac OS X and I want to add a boot cd option to yaboot because I'm trying to boot a scratched Mac OS X installation DVD that takes a while to read and the frst bootstrap moves on too fast. How do I edit the timeout for the first bootstrap anyways? So, my main question is, how do I add a cd booting option to yaboot and then, how doI boot it? The devalias from OpenFrmware tells me that 1 have 2 cd-rom instaled, on is /ht/pci@3/ata-6/disk@0 and the other on ends with a 1 instead of a zero. These are the contents of my yaboot.conf file: yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer run: "man yaboot.conf" for details. Do not make changes until you have!! see also: /usr/share/doc/yaboot/examples for example configurations. • Drive reporting incorrect free space

  So I swapped my shiny SATA SSD for an even shinier PCI-E SSD. I run my core OS on the SSD because it's silly-fast. I did this on my old SSD so I created a new EXT4 partition and then just dded the data across (sorry I don't know the exact command I ran anymore) and after reinstalling grub, I booted onto the PCI-E SSD. At first glance everything had worked perfectly and things were running faster than ever. But then I noticed the free disk space on the new, larger drive: it was almost exactly the same as it was on the other disk... A disk that was half its size. So it looks as if I've copied the files across incorrectly and it's copied some of the filesystem metadata along with it. Tools like du and Disk Usage Analyzer come back with the correct figures. Things that look at the partition (and not the files) seem to think the drive is 120GB I've been using this drive for a week now so it's way out of sync with the old SSD so dumping the data and starting again isn't a job that fills me with joy but two questions: Is there a way to fix my filesystem so it knows what it's really on about? fsck e2fsck and badblocks all seem to be able to scan it without finding a problem with it. If I do plug my old SSD back in, copy the data off my PCI-E on to it and then copy it back onto a fresh filesystem (eg juggle the data around), what's the best way of doing that? I obviously want to keep all the permissions and softlinks where they are.

• Context switches much slower in new linux kernels

  We are looking to upgrade the OS on our servers from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Unfortunately, it seems that the latency to run a thread that has become runnable has significantly increased from the 2.6 kernel to the 3.2 kernel. In fact the latency numbers we are getting are hard to believe. Let me be more specific about the test. We have a program that has two threads. The first thread gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC) and then signals a condition variable once a second. The second thread waits on the condition variable and wakes up when it is signaled. It then gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC). The difference between the time in the second thread and the time in the first thread is computed and displayed on the console. After this the second thread waits on the condition variable once more. So, we get a thread to thread signaling latency measurement once a second as a result. In linux 2.6.32, this latency is somewhere on the order of 2.8-3.5 us, which is reasonable. In linux 3.2.0, this latency is somewhere on the order of 40-100 us. I have excluded any differences in hardware between the two host hosts. They run on identical hardware (dual socket X5687 {Westmere-EP} processors running at 3.6 GHz with hyperthreading, speedstep and all C states turned off). We are changing the affinity to run both threads on physical cores of the same socket (i.e., the first thread is run on Core 0 and the second thread is run on Core 1), so there is no bouncing of threads on cores or bouncing/communication between sockets. The only difference between the two hosts is that one is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with kernel 2.6.32-28 (the fast context switch box) and the other is running the latest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 3.2.0-23 (the slow context switch box). Have there been any changes in the kernel that could account for this ridiculous slow down in how long it takes for a thread to be scheduled to run?

• What are all things that do/can happen when a user enters in a web page's URL?

  Sorry if this is a naive title. I am trying to break into web development, which is so far a foreign world to me. I have taken a basic intro to OS, intro to Networking as part of my bachelors degree several years ago. I cannot say that we went into things deeply, beyond academic assignments. I would like to understand things much better regarding to this specific task (e.g what goes on in at the OS level, at networking level, what are other computers involved, where do proxy servers and hackers come in). Again, at the very basic level this has been covered, but I would like to review this specific thing better. Are there chapter(s) os a specific book, or specific SHORT reading that you recommend? I have nothing against your list of 20 favorite books, but I want to understand this one thing better in 2-3 weeks of reading after work / on the weekends (realistically 5-10 hrs per week, so I am looking for about 15-20 hrs of reading material, NO MORE). I am not a fast reader :) Thanks.

• When should I start learning a PHP Framework

  I'm a beginner programmer I have been learning PHP for a while, though not consistently. But for the past few months (say 3 months) I have been a bit consistent in my learning, largely because of a project a friend ask me to do for him since he knew I was into web design. Though I struggled to complete the tiny project for him after about 3 weeks, because I got stuck some times and I have to look up tutorials/references relating to the problem I was trying to solve, but I feel fulfilled been able to accomplish a project and along the way grab most of PHP basics. My interest in Web development has grew higher since completing that project and I have been trying to learn PHP/MySQL as fast as I could, because the same friend want me to do something else for him, which to me is way beyond the basics I know. Though I don't charge him anything, but it gives me a sense of fulfillment. I want to learn a framework, because I heard it can make you accomplish more as a web developer and makes life much easier. Can I learn a framework without having OOP knowledge? I know how to create and use functions, though I don't use it much I know my question is not straight forward, but I know you will understand were I'm coming from and advice me appropriately. I wish to become a professional Web Developer. I really need your professional advice.

• Game 30% done on HTML5. Maybe it was a bad idea. Should I change to Unity3d? [on hold]

  I'm creating a 3d game on HTML5. It's 30% complete and the hard part is already coded. The server is on node.js.Now I'm realizing that maybe it was not a wise choice. This is because I realized: Three.js still has many bugs. I don't see the same thing on every machine. Each browser, OS, can give different results. I'm afraid my clients will have a great stress installing my game properly. I have tons of sprites and models on my game. I wonder if my clients will have to load all them again everytime they want to play? I wonder if a Node.js server will be fast enough to handle it, and I'm afraid it won't be scalable. What would you advise me? Should I continue and finish the game on HTML5 or is it better to remake it on something else, like Unity3d for the client and (what?) for the server?

• Having trouble installing Bradcom STA driver

  I just installed Ubuntu and love it so much, its so fast now. But I have a problem connecting to the internet. I checked and saw I have to install the driver Broadcom STA wireless driver but every time I do try to install it it says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log files for details: /var/log/jockey.log I went to the terminal and copy and pasted the log file name. and when I did it, it said I have no permission to access this file. I checked on the forums that I have to be on a wired connection. So I plugged my laptop into my router and I got internet then tried to install the driver again. And it was loading then when it got to the end the same message popped up. Also I have one of those little USB router things you plug into the computer and it gives you internet I have been using that but its to slow. So I want to use the one in my computer but cant. Also I tried the command: sudo modprobe wl and when i type that command in it says: FATAL: Module wl not found Also I'm using Ubuntu 12.04

• How to pause and resume a game in XNA using the same key?

  I'm attempting to implement a really simple game state system, this is my first game - trying to make a Tetris clone. I'd consider myself a novice programmer at best. I've been testing it out by drawing different textures to the screen depending on the current state. The 'Not Playing' state seems to work fine, I press Space and it changes to 'Playing', but when I press 'P' to pause or resume the game nothing happens. I tried checking current and previous keyboard states thinking it was happening to fast for me to see, but again nothing seemed to happen. If I change either the pause or resume, so they're both different, it works as intended. I'm clearly missing something obvious, or completely lacking some know-how in regards to how update and/or the keyboard states work. • How do audio based games such as Audiosurf and Beat Hazard work?

  Note: I am not asking how to make a clone of one of these. I am asking about how they work. I'm sure everyone's seen the games where you use your own music files (or provided ones) and the games produce levels based on them, such as Audiosurf and Beat Hazard. Here is a video of Audiosurf in action, to show what I mean. If you provide a heavy metal song, you would get a completely different set of obstacles, enemies, and game experience from something like Vivaldi. What does interest me is how these games work. I do not know much about audio (well, data-side), but how do they process the song to understand when it is settling down or when it's speeding up? I guess they could just feed the pitch values (assuming those sorts of things exist in audio files) to form a level, but it wouldn't fully explain it. I'm either looking for an explanation, some links to articles about this sort of thing (I'm sure there's a term or terms for it), or even an open-source implementation of this kind of thing ;-) EDIT: After some searching and a little help, I found out about FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). This maybe a step in the right direction, but it is something that does not make any sense to me..or fits with my physics knowledge of waves.

• How to quickly search through a very large list of strings / records on a database

  I have the following problem: I have a database containing more than 2 million records. Each record has a string field X and I want to display a list of records for which field X contains a certain string. Each record is about 500 bytes in size. To make it more concrete: in the GUI of my application I have a text field where I can enter a string. Above the text field I have a table displaying the (first N, e.g. 100) records that match the string in the text field. When I type or delete one character in the text field, the table content must be updated on the fly. I wonder if there is an efficient way of doing this using appropriate index structures and / or caching. As explained above, I only want to display the first N items that match the query. Therefore, for N small enough, it should not be a big issue loading the matching items from the database. Besides, caching items in main memory can make retrieval faster. I think the main problem is how to find the matching items quickly, given the pattern string. Can I rely on some DBMS facilities, or do I have to build some in-memory index myself? Any ideas? EDIT I have run a first experiment. I have split the records into different text files (at most 200 records per file) and put the files in different directories (I used the content of one data field to determine the directory tree). I end up with about 50000 files in about 40000 directories. I have then run Lucene to index the files. Searching for a string with the Lucene demo program is pretty fast. Splitting and indexing took a few minutes: this is totally acceptable for me because it is a static data set that I want to query. The next step is to integrate Lucene in the main program and use the hits returned by Lucene to load the relevant records into main memory.

• Ubuntu 11.10 very slow compared to Windows

  I'm new to Ubuntu/linux. Since my PC is very old and not very fast with Windows 7, I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.10 today. When I first started it, I had bad 800x600 resolution and it was very slow and annoying. So I installed a driver for my graphic card and now everything looks very nice (1280x1024).But I think it's still far slower than Windows 7. I tried to run in Ubuntu like a few people suggested on the forum but if I log in I get a black screen saying something like "this video mode cannot be displayed". I get that same screen when booting Ubuntu btw, but after about 15 seconds it disappears and just starts Ubuntu. I also installed other drivers for my graphic card but everything stayed the same. I noticed that i.e. when I open Firefox or system settings it takes about 5 seconds till it opens (while Windows 7 takes under 1 second to start i.e. Chrome) and when I do this my CPU usage gets to 100% for a short time. Computer specs: Memory: 2GB RAM Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 400MHz. I read on various forums that 11.04 works flawless on many PCs, where 11.10 is very slow. Should I install 11.04 or could anybody help me with this problem?
