  • Thunderbird: where have the folder view switching arrows gone?

    The folder pane in Thunderbird used to have a left and right arrow that allowed switching between the folders displayed. However, since a week or so, the arrows are gone (update? miss-clicked something?) As I use them several times a day: how can I get the arrows back? I have Thunderbird 8.0. Note: I know, switching is also accessible via the menu bar View Folders, but this is too much clicks for me.

  • How many Tomcat instances can one application server handle?

    My network engineer states I am part of a cluster where two apache application servers(512G RAM each) have 142 instances each of Tomcat (of which my company represents 6 each with 2G RAM). This seems like a lot and my latency issues move with the hour of the day - 7AM CST software functions fine, 10AM CST - system slows significantly this slowness continues until 6PM CST. My question is how many Tomcat instances can one application server handle?

  • ldap export and import

    Is it possible to export all the data inside openldap for example using ldapsearch or some other tool to a (ldif?) file and then import everything on another server and put this in a script that would be run every day. So that I could use the other one as a backup when the first/master server is not available? I have full access to the first/master server, but I can't modify it's configuration so I think I can't set up replication.

    My laptop (Compaq Presario V3000) does not have bluetooth. Few months back I bought a bluetooth dongle to connect to my cell phone. One fine day the bluetooth dongle got damaged. Now I also have this wireless mouse (Logitech M215), which also has a teeny-weeny dongle. What I am trying to figure out is, whether I can use the wireless mouse dongle to somehow connect to my cell-phone. Is it possible??? Pls help DMX

    Emails often contain invitation to some event at some time on some day. In a single email it would be possible to smartly extract these data elements. In Outlook, one can make calendar item out of email by draging it to calendar - this saves time on the name of the calendar time and having all the details, but the user still has to manually pick time and date. Is there a smart solution so that a plug-in or add-on could do that?

  • Windows Process Activation Service won't Start "parameter is incorrect" (Visual Studio 2010 Profiler)

    I've struggled with this one for a whole day, so here is both the problem & solution: After profiling an ASP.NET application on Windows 7 (x64), I exited Visual Studio (possibly a crash) and installed some updates which required a reboot. When I loaded back up the ASP.NET Web Application in my Visual Studio Solution was dimmed out, and the Web & WAS services turned out to be stopped. When I tried starting Windows Process Activation Service, I got the error "parameter is incorrect".

  • Collapsing rows of duplicate dates in a column leaving one row with a subtotal?

    I have several thousand rows of date, time, and values in columns. Each row is contains a date, time for that date, and a value for that time period (hour) So each 24 rows has the same date with each having the next hour of the day. I'd like to collapse or group the 24 rows leaving the last row with a subtotal of the value (column D) to the right in column F. While this can obviously be done manually, several years of data would take a while and there ought to be a way to do this other wise?

  • Referencing ASP.net textbox data in JavaScripts

    I'm interested in making an interactive 3D pie chart using JavaScript and ASP.net controls for a webpage. Essentially, I want to make an interactive version of the chart here: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/piechart#3D I want to have 5 ASP.net textboxes where the user enters data and then submits it, and the chart adjusts according to what the user enters. I understand using ASP.net controls with JS is probably not the most effective way to go about it, but I would really appreciate if someone could share how doing this would be possible. Add Drobox to Your Start Menu Dear How-To Geek, I use Dropbox all the time and would like to add it right onto my start menu along side the other major shortcuts like Documents, Pictures, etc. It seems like adding Dropbox into the menu should be part of the Dropbox installation package! As it stands you’re going to have to do a little simple hacking to get Dropbox nestled neatly into your start menu. The hack isn’t super elegant but when you’re done you’ll have the link you want and it’ll look like it was there all along. Understanding and Using Symbolic Links Dear How-To Geek, I was talking to a coworker the other day about an issue I’d been having with a media center application I’m running. He suggested using symbolic links to better organize my media and make it easier for the application to access my collection. Rip Your TV DVDs into Handy Episode Files Dear How-To Geek, My wife got me an iPod for Christmas and I still haven’t got around to filling it up. I have tons of entire TV show seasons on DVD and would like to get them on the iPod but I have absolutely no idea where to start. How do I get the shows off the discs? I thought it would be as easy to import the TV shows into iTunes as it is to import tracks off a CD but I was totally wrong. I tried downloading some applications to rip them but those didn’t work at all. Very frustrating! Surely there is an easy and/or automated way to do this, right? Sincerely, Free My DVDs Dear DVDs, Oh man is this a frustration we can relate to. It’s inordinately difficult to get movies and TV shows off physical media and into digital (and portable media player-friendly) formats. There are a multitude of ways to rip DVDs and quite a few applications out there (some good, some mediocre, and some outright malware). We’d recommend a two-part punch to solve your ripping woes. You’ll need a copy of DVDFab to strip away the protections on the discs and rip the disc and Handbrake to load the disc image and convert the files. It’s not quite as smooth as the CD-to-iTunes workflow but it’s still pretty easy. Check out all the steps and settings you’ll want to toggle here.   • SQL Developer at Oracle Open World 2012

    We have a lot going on in San Francisco this fall. One of the most personal exciting bits, for what will be my 4th or 5th Open World, is that this will be my FIRST as a member of Team Oracle. I’ve presented once before, but most years it was just me pressing flesh at the vendor booths. After 3-4 days of standing and talking, you’re ready to just go home and not do anything for a few weeks. This time I’ll have a chance to walk around and talk with our users and get a good idea of what’s working and what’s not. Of course it will be a great opportunity for you to find us and get to know your SQL Developer team! 3.4 miles across and back – thanks Ashley for signing me up for the run! This year is going to be a bit crazy. Work wise I’ll be presenting twice, working a booth, and proctoring several of our Hands-On Labs. The fun parts will be equally crazy though – running across the Bay Bridge (I don’t run), swimming the Bay (I don’t swim), having my wife fly out on Wednesday for the concert, and then our first WhiskyFest on Friday (I do drink whisky though.) But back to work – let’s talk about EVERYTHING you can expect from the SQL Developer team. Booth Hours We’ll have 2 ‘demo pods’ in the Exhibition Hall over at Moscone South. Look for the farm of Oracle booths, we’ll be there under the signs that say ‘SQL Developer.’ There will be several people on hand, mostly developers (yes, they still count as people), who can answer your questions or demo the latest features. Come by and say ‘Hi!’, and let us know what you like and what you think we can do better. Seriously. It’s self-paced, but we’ll have several helpers walking around to answer questions and chat up any SQL Developer or database topic that comes to mind. If your employer is sending you to Open World for all that great training, the HOLs are a great opportunity to capitalize on that. They are only 60 minutes each, so you don’t have to worry about burning out. And there’s no homework! Of course, if you do want to take the labs home with you, many are already available via the Developer Day Hands-On Database Applications Developer Lab. You will need your own computer for those, but we’ll take care of the rest. Don’t be shy, walk right up to them and introduce yourself. Normal social rules still apply, but at the conference everyone is open and up for meeting and talking with attendees. Just understand if there’s a line that you might only get a minute or two. It’s a LONG conference though, so you’ll have plenty of time to catch up with everyone. If you’re going to be around on Tuesday evening, head on over to the OTN Lounge from 4:30 to 6:30 and hang out for our Tweet Meet.
