    Hi, cmake advises to use out-of-source builds. While in general I like the idea I find it not comfortable to navigate from out-of-source sub directory to the corresponding source directory. I frequently need the code to perform some actions with code (e.g. grep, svn command etc.).     I have been trying to find info on the web about the differences between these statements, and it seems to me they are identical but I can't find confirmation of that or any kind of comparison between the two. What is the difference between doing this: BEGIN -- Some update, insert, set statements END and doing this BEGIN TRANS -- Some update, insert, set statements COMMIT TRANS ? Note that there is only the need to rollback in the case of some exception or timeout or other general failure, there would not be a conditional reason to rollback.

For example, if I want the product of the elements in a list, in Ruby I can write: list.inject(1) { |prod,el| prod * el } I found I can just use Product in Mathematica: Apply[Product, list] However, this isn't general enough for me (like, if I don't just want the product or sum of the numbers). What's the closest equivalent to inject?

  • How do I secure Sql Server 2008 R2

    I have both a dedicated and a VPS (from Fasthosts) virtual server - the web sites/applications I run on these, access Sql Server stored on the same web server. Until now, I have logged onto Sql Server on both the deidicated and VPS server, from Sql Server Management Studio - until I noticed in my server application logs, multiple attempts to logon to Sql Server using the 'sa' username, but failed password. So someone/bot is trying hard (repeatedly every couple of hours, for approx 20 attempts during each instance) to log on... so obviously I have to lock down access to Sql Sever remotely. What I have done is gone into Configuration Manager, and in Sql Server Network Configuration - Protocols for Sql2008 and also in Sql Native Client 10.0 Configuration - Client Protocols - I have diabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP (and VIA by default). I have left Shared Memory enabled. I also disabled in Sql Server Services, the Sql Server Browser. Now the only way I can manage the databases on these servers, is by logging on to them via Remote Desktop. Can anyone confirm if this is the correct way of stopping anyone maliciously logging on to Sql Server? (I'm not a DBA or security expert - and there are hundreds of articles advising all different ways - but I was hoping for the experts here to confirm, or otherwise, if what I've done is correct) Thank you, Mark

    I'm sure this is an issue anyone who uses Stata for publications or reports has run into: how do you conveniently export your output to something that can be parsed by a scripting language or Excel? There are a few ADO files that to this for specific commands (try findit tabout or findit outreg2). But what about exporting the output of the table command? Or the results of an anova? I'd love to hear about how Stata users address this problem for either specific commands or in general.

    For many methods in .NET, the exceptions they can potentially throw can be as many as 7-8 (one or two methods in XmlDocument, Load() being one I think, can throw this many exceptions). Does this mean I have to write 8 catch blocks to catch all of these exceptions (it is best practise to catch an exception with a specific exception block and not just a general catch block of type Exception).     I am doing a PDO::exec command on multiple updates: $MyPdo->setAttribute(PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY,true); $MyPdo->exec("update t1 set f1=1;update t2 set f1=2"); I am doing it inside a transaction, and I keep getting: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2014 Cannot execute queries while other unbuffered queries are active. Consider using PDOStatement::fetchAll(). Alternatively, if your code is only ever going to run against mysql, you may enable query buffering by setting the PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY attribute. those are the only query/ies
