    I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.     based on this post , i am trying to update my kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.35 as my intel video card doesn't work. However, I am very afraid that my update would cause my computer crash and lost all the thing.(does not function , esp for video) I am using ubuntu 10.04, currently version is 2.6.32-40-generic.     i have installed ubuntu before on my old laptop, i remember it was a breeze. Now im trying to install it on my desktop and i am stuck. i tried the Windows installer, when restarted and selected linux, the pc went to black screen the shut down... tried with cd, i got the ubuntu purple screen, then shut down. its an intel i5 build with 8G ram and asus motherboard...(don't know if it makes any difference) any help?

    So I've already checked through my config file and I really can't see an instance where any tag hasn't been properly closed...but I keep getting this configuration error...Would you mind taking a look through the error and the config file below?   • Why does Mass Effect 1 run so slow on my machine if I have an XFX NVidia 9400GT video card? [closed]

    I so sick and tired of having my components pass the minimum requirements of a game and then I get 15 FPS on the game on everything low. Should't PC developers say 'use at least this video card for a smooth 30 FPS'? Here are my specs: Windows 7 2GB DDR2 RAM XFX Nvidia 9400gt Intel Pentium D Dual Core 2.8ghz I should be at LEAST getting 30 FPS on everything low right? Please tell me what I can do to make games run as they should, or is my video card not good for these games? Here are the recommended requirements from the official site: Recommended System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC Operating System: Windows XP or Vista Processor: 2.6+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD Memory: 2 Gigabyte Ram Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher.     I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT.   • How to compare old laptop to new laptop?

    I hope this question doesn't get closed at once :) I have an old laptop, a Compaq NC4200, which is going its final laps around the track these days. Battery is dead, and everything kinda runs slow. It also has only 1GB of memory, and even though I don't know if it can take more, I probably wouldn't be able to get hold of any that matches without having to special order it. The size, however, has been ideal for my usage pattern, so I'm looking to replace it with a similarly sized laptop, at least in the same size category. However, it's been a while since I tried keeping track of CPUs, so I have a question. The old laptop has a Intel Pentium M 760 1.86GHz processor. One laptop I found online has a Intel Pentium SU4100 1.3GHz dual-core. This type of processor seems to be quite common in the price and size-range I've been looking. What kind of relative performance boost could I expect from the old one to the new one? I am not expecting a "about 7.45x speed", but some indication would be nice. For instance, dual-core tells me it might be akin to 2.6GHz, but I assume I can't simply compare 1.86GHz to 2.6GHz and expect the new one to run about 1.4x as fast, I expect more these days. Or is that unrealistic for this kind of processor? Do I need to up my price range and go for a 2+ GHz processor?

  • How to find virtualization performance bottlenecks?

    We have recently started moving our C++ build server(s) from real machines into VMs. (MS Hyper-V) We have some performance issues that I've currently no idea how to address. We have: Test-Box - this is a piece of desktop workstation hardware my co-worker used to set up the VM before we moved it to the actual server hardware Srv-Box - this is the server hardware Test-Box-Real - This is Windows running directly on the Test-Box HW Test-Box-VM - This is Windows in a Hyper-V VM on the Test-Box HW Srv-Box-Real- This is Server2008R2 running on the Srv-Box HW. Srv-Box-VM- This is Windows running in a Hyper-V VM on the Srv-Box HW, i.e. on Srv-Box-Real. Now, the problem is that we compared Build times between Test-Box-Real and Test-Box-VM and they were basically equal (within about 2%). Then we moved the VM to the Srv-Box machine and what we saw there is that we have a significant performance degradation between Srv-Box-Real and Srv-Box-VM, that is, where we saw no differences on the Test HW we now do see major differences in performance on the actual Server HW. (Builds about ~~ 50% slower inside the VM.) I should add that both the Test-Box and the Srv-Box are only running this one single VM and doing nothing else. I should also note that the "Real" OS is Win2008R2(64bit) and the VM hosted OS is Wind2003R2(32bit). Hardware specs: Srv-Box: Intel XEON E5640 @ 2.67Ghz (This means 8 cores with hyperthreading on the Real system and "only" 4 cores on the VM, since Hyper-V doesn't allow for hyperthreading, but number of cores doesn't seem to explain the problem here.) 16GB RAM (we have 4GB assigned to the VM) Virtual DELL RAID 1 (2x 450GB HUS156045VLS600 Hitachi 15k SAS drives) Test-Box: Intel XEON E31245 @ 3.3GHz 16GB RAM WD VelociRaptor 600GB 10k RPM SATA Note again that I'm only concerned with the differences between Srv-Box-Real and Srv-Box-VM (high) vs. the differences seen btw. Test-Box-Real and Test-Box-VM (low). Why would one machine have parity when comparing VM vs Real performance and the other (server grade HW no less) would have a large disparity? (Both being XEON CPUs ...)

  • Connection speed drops from 1 Gbps to 10 Mbps (Vista 64)

    I recently got a Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart Server EX490) setup so I could do backups and other things. However, I am having trouble on my Vista 64 PC. The backup will be making great progress, then it will just slow down. At one point, I noticed the lights on my Netgear GS105 indicated it was not using a 1000 Mbps connection, but a 10 Mbps one. I checked the Status of Local Area Connection (Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection) and that also showed the same slow speed. This has happened several times in the last couple days. When I disabled the network device, and then enabled it, it established the 1 Gpbs connection again. However, some of the times the Sent Bytes Activity on the Status windows indicate that the data flow is still slow (100 to 1000 bytes every couple seconds). Obviously, at this rate I could backup faster to floppy disk. :) My question is how to diagnose and fix this problem. When I look at the Administrative Events, I do a Errors: Bonjour Service 456: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) And a Warning: e1yexpress Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected. I am suspicious there is some power saving mode. I found a post suggesting System Idle Power Saver(SIPS) may be the issue. I am going to try that, but looking for other suggestions or diagnostic advice. I have several new items in this configuration: server, client software, switch and cat6 cables.

    I have a server running Debian 5.0, and MySQL. Suddendly, MySQL stopped working, and after many attempts to fix it, I decided to reinstall it. I installed MySQL 5.1.63, and when started it goes to safe mode. I made some typing, and when I executed mysql_upgrade as root, it complained: ... Running 'mysql_fix_privilege_tables'... ERROR 1548 (HY000) at line 1111: Cannot load from mysql.proc. The table is probably corrupted ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 1112: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'sqlstate 'HY000' set message_text='Unexpected content found in the performance_s' at line 1 ERROR 1548 (HY000) at line 1125: Cannot load from mysql.proc. The table is probably corrupted FATAL ERROR: Upgrade failed I checked the mysql.proc table, and it's comment column was slightly different from my backup. -- My backup says: `comment` char(64) CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL DEFAULT '', -- But it were: `comment` text CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL, So, I restored my mysql database backup, and now they all match, but mysql_upgrade still trigger the same errors. I also tried do check and repair the mysql.proc table, but got no success.

  • Windows 8 unable to connect to WPA2 AES Wireless Network

    I'm running Windows 8 and am unable to connect to my home wireless network. I've tried restarting the router, patching the drivers to the next version, patching the drivers to the last version, running windows update and patching the chipset drivers to the latest version. So far nothing has worked. My computer can get on the internet via USB tethering on my phone or an open WiFi connection, but it is unable to connect to my home WPA2 AES secured wireless network. It sees the network, attempts to connect, gets a limited connection and then drops the connection. All the other wireless devices in my household have no problems. I have the new Dell XPS 12, running Windows 8 using an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 wireless adapter. I've refreshed windows twice now to try different driver configurations. I've tried uninstalling all the Dell software, I've tried uninstalling all the Intel software and reinstalling just the drivers. I've tried turning switching the ability for the Wireless driver to turn the computer off or on. I've tried setting up the connection manually from desktop mode. I've tried switching it on and off using the wireless button on the keyboard and in the software. So far nothing has allowed me to connect to the secured network. It just keeps getting a limited connection, dropping the connection and retrying. It's driving me crazy, any ideas, anything I missed? Thanks.

    recently i upgrade my machine with new hardware component. my mother board is Gigabyte, processor Intel i3 3.6 ghz, ram 4 gb, graphics card ATI radeon 4350 1 GB. my OS installed is windows XP. when i am trying to play call of duty black ops then screen gets freeze and when i try to play other game like medal of honour then suddenly game closed suddenly after 15 or 20 minutes. i am not being able to find out the problem. whether i have problem in RAM or Graphics card. i asked few hardware person and one of them told me that i should installed windows 7 rather than windows xp. is it true. please help me to understand the problem and also tell me what should i do to fix this problem. please discuss in detail. thanks in advance. Update: yes i already install lates driver for ATI radeon 4350 but still the problem persist. do i need to install windows 7 instead of win xp because my processor is intel i3.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 transactional replication over VPN

    I'm having difficulty setting up replication over a VPN. I have a SQL Server 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition database on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. SQL Server is running on a non-standard port. I have set it up so that it is acting as its own distributor and have configured a publisher on this server. It is set as an updatable transational publication (yes, this is necessary). On this server, I have Routing and Remote Access enabled in order to be able to establish VPN connections. It is configured with a static IP address pool, of which the first in the range is always assigned to the server. I have assigned a test user a static address within this range (I don't know if this is necessary or not). All clients will be 2008 R2 versions, but could be SQL Express or standalone developer instances of the full product. I can establish a VPN connection from the client without problems and can see that the correct IP addresses are allocated. After connecting to the database to test that I can establish a connection, I realised that I needed to be able to connect to the database using the server name rather than an IP address - required for replication - which wouldn't work initially. I created an entry in the hosts file for the server on the client using the NETBIOS name of the server, and now I can connect to the server, from the client, using the SERVER\INSTANCE, PORT syntax, over the VPN. As it is the default instance on the server, I can also connect with simply SERVER, PORT syntax. After all that, I still get the following dreaded error: SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'SERVER\INSTANCE'. (Replication.Utilities). What have I missed? How do I get this to work? TIA
