• Ubuntu server: Delete first folder in directory

  How can I grab the first subfolder in a directory and delete it? I found a script to monitor the free diskspace. It sends an alert email if space runs low, but I want to also delete some unneeded stuff. I have a backup folder where I save daily and monthly backups. I want to delete the first folder since this always the oldest, but I don't know the name of the oldest backup. My folders without Jan-May and Dec: 06-01 07-01 08-01 09-01 10-01 11-01 Friday Monday Saturday Sunday Thursday Tuesday Wednesday How can I delete the first folder "06-01" without knowing its name?

• Server 2003 Functional Domain DFS Replication Problem (Files being moved to conflicted folder for no reason)

  We have 2 Windows 2003 servers configured with a DFS namespace and we are running into problems with the redirected profiles we have setup. Basically, one server is the FSMO master for all roles, and we have another DC that is the DFS namespace primary server. We have profile redirection setup using the \dfsnamespace\userprofile formula. The FSMO master DC locks up occasionally (don't ask :), and when it does, and we bring it back up... All of the user profiles hosted on the DFS namespace get overwritten when a user logs in. The current profile gets moved to the conflicting and deleted items folder. This strikes me as really odd considering the whole point of using DFS was to provide some redundancy in case one server went down. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance! -Nate

• XP can't read data from transferred HD

  Computer A, running XP, died. XP was installed on a fresh HD in computer B. Slaved data-backup HD from A was installed as slave on B. B will not read it; shows only 2 folders, Recycler and System Volume Info. All of these are older machines with IDE drives. What's going on & how can I read/transfer the data from the transferred drive? This was only a trial run. Actually I will need to transfer the master HD from A - which has XP on it - and read from its data partition because (blush) the backup drive was not up to date.

  Does Virtual Server 2005 R2 have a command line interface, that's versatile enough? Here is a situation. I run a Win2k VM on an old memory constrained machine. I allocate it 378MB of RAM and the VM runs just fine. Once a month, inside the VM, I backup the (a very large) database, compress it using 7Zip and ftp it to the backup site (all in a script). Unfortunately the compression part takes a massive amount of RAM (far exceeding the 378MB), it goes for the paging file and brings absolutely everything to a crawl and literally takes 2-3 days, if left unattended. So to fix this, I have to shutdown the VM, give it temporarily 768MB of RAM and then the whole thing finishes in 20 minutes. So, is there a way do the following automatically from the host machine in a script? Shutdown the guest OS (I think, I got this part) Change the RAM allocation from 378 to 768 Start the guest OS again then, 1 hour later, do everything in reverse.

• How to configure an ASUS motherboard.

  I have an ASUS P7P55-M motherboard running with an Intel Core i5-750 processor and 4 GB RAM with 1600 MT/s speed. For some reason the default settings of the motherboard make all the components run at half their optimums. I have switched to the "D.O.C.P." profile and supposedly everything is as it's supposed to be (verified with CPU-Z). There is also an "X.M.P." profile and a manual one. Are either of the DOCP or XMP safe to go with? I wouldn't use the manual mode as I would likely mess something up real bad. XMP seems to be more memory oriented.

  I did a backup to a remote nfs folder with rsync, from a MAC to a Remote Debian. The final backup is 58GB less than the original. Rsync says that everything was OK, and nothing to update. • Improve performance on Lync desktop sharing

  I'm using Lync 2010 server to handle some clients communication and screen sharing. The biggest issue is the performance with screen sharing, it is of rather high quality but the frame rate is very poor. I have been reading and searching a lot on the subject and 95% of all topics is about bandwidth, we have a 200/200 MBit Internet connection solely for this application. Also my test machines runs on an internal gigabit lan. The speeds between all boxes is hysterically fast. Next step was to ensure that there where some profiles for different bandwidths, so i registered some New-CsNetworkBandwidthPolicyProfile -Identity 50Mb_Link -Description "BW profile for 50Mb links" -AudioBWLimit 20000 -AudioBWSessionLimit 200 -VideoBWLimit 14000 -VideoBWSessionLimit 700 New-CsNetworkBandwidthPolicyProfile -Identity 100Mb_Link -Description "BW profile for 100Mb links" -AudioBWLimit 30000 -AudioBWSessionLimit 300 -VideoBWLimit 25000 -VideoBWSessionLimit 1500 Nothing fancy happend here either. Non of the test boxes have anything from Norton installed, they doesn't have any firewalls running (nor does the Lync server), all fences are down in this environment just for the testing. Is there any thing that I may have missed to improve the quality of this? Thanks

• Is it safe to use consumer MLC SSDs in a server?

  We (and by we I mean Jeff) are looking into the possibility of using Consumer MLC SSD disks in our backup data center. We want to try to keep costs down and usable space up - so the Intel X25-E's are pretty much out at about 700$ each and 64GB of capacity. What we are thinking of doing is to buy some of the lower end SSD's that offer more capacity at a lower price point. My boss doesn't think spending about 5k for disks in servers running out of the backup data center is worth the investment. Just how dangerous of an approach is this and what can be done to mitigate these dangers?

  Possible Duplicate: How do I sync grouped Windows Store apps between devices? Is there a way for me to copy/save/transfer my "start menu" configuration, meaning the grouping and ordering of the elements on the Start screen, between user profiles? Is it in the registry? I am open to manual or "coded" suggestions. UPDATE: I'd like to VETO this closing. I am aware of the "roaming" profile behavior. I want to COPY my configuration BETWEEN profiles on the same machine.... DIFFERENT profile DIFFERENT person. I like the way my start screen is set up. i want to set my wife up with the same layout.

• Too Many Files In Debian Linux Folder?

  I've been using an external USB drive on a Debian server for backup. The drive is formatted as NTFS and mounted with ntsfmount. This was working fine, but I was filling up a directory with lots of files. Eventually the backup failed. When I then tried to look at the directory using ls it reported: ls: reading directory .: Numerical result out of range Looking in syslog, I also saw this: Sep 23 07:35:31 tosh ntfsmount[28040]: Failed to read index block: Numerical result out of range. Is this simply that I've reached the upper limit of number of files in a directory? If so, is there any way to extend the number of allowed files?

• Best way to troubleshoot apache not starting?

  We have recently gotten a backup server to mirror all our data onto in case the primary server goes down. I've gotten all the sites data updated through rsync, and all the apache config and databases updated. Both machines are on Ubuntu 9 (9.04 on the primary, 9.10 on the backup). So everything seems synced up for the most part at this point (still need to figure out user syncing), and I try to start Apache. I get * Starting web server apache2 [fail] Nothing else indicating what the problem could be. I know I don't have enough info to expect a solution from you guys, so I'd just like to know where I can go from here to further investigate this issue. Would there be any error logs for this? • Windows: How to add batch-script action to Right Click menu

  I have a few programs that creates temp files or backup files or similar files that are not important. For example, GVim for Windows by default creates a backup file in filename.txt~. I sometimes need to clean up a dir and remove all these files. I have made a simple .bat file for this. However, it is cumbersome to have to start up cmd, navigate to the folder, run the script. Especially since this is a script that I would like to run often on various folders. And I do not want to copy the script to multiple folders, as this would be a maintenance nightmare. So, I was thinking, that the best solution would be to add a Right Click menu item that allows me to run the script. So that I can right click on a folder in Explorer and click Cleanup and then have my script run on this folder. So my question is: How do I add a right click menu action that runs a custom batch script?

• Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop won't boot Windows.

  I have a Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop (XP Pro) which stopped booting a couple of weeks ago. The symptoms are that the laptop would display its DOS Toshiba splash screen, then the Windows (XP) boot screen would display, then a very brief blue screen flash, then back to the boot options screen (offering safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, last known good config, etc... none of these work). I assumed a duff HD, and swapped it for a new one and reinstalled from a TrueImage backup. This worked until I installed windows updates I think (the backup was a few months old), and now the PC is doing the same thing. I have installed a third, old HD (60GB) with Ubuntu 11.04 on it, and everything is fine. PC boots and runs Ubuntu beautifully. I need Windows running on it though ! Given these symptoms, could it a windows update issue ? Or might I have a hardware fault still ?

• Environment variable for volume names in Windows?

  I'm trying to write a batch file that will look at the volume label of the current drive and report if it's not equivalent to a certain string. Is there a default variable in the shell for this? Can I define one? Am I SOL and I'll actually have to do some (shudder) programming? EDIT: If this is possible in PowerShell that would work fine. (For the curious, we ship our machines with software cloning as a rapid bootable backup solution since most of our customers are daytraders and aren't interested in RAID due to urgency of getting-the-hell-back-to-work-right-away if there's a software corruption problem, and we want to make it immediately obvious if they're booting to the backup drive unintentionally, like say the primary failed entirely. The hope was just to write a simple batch file that would autostart on boot and throw a warning in the event of a problem.)

• How can I switch Linux running OS from disk to running from RAM without restarting?

  Is it possible to switch to running Linux from RAM or RAM disk after starting starting initially from disk? eg. You need to make an image of your hard disk, FTP it to a remote location, some time later you want the image back, so you start the system from disk as usual, restore the image you FTP'd from the remote location back into place. More like a CloneZilla backup and restore, without booting the server from CD or USB disk, but starting from the normal hard disk? Notes on environment I should have mentioned it earlier. It is a remotely hosted VM where I cannot boot into a recovery console mode or do a netinstall. It will always boot onto the same disk. Which means that if there is some serious corruption I can't repair it offline, which is why being able to ftp a previously saved backup into place is so important

• Google analytics and multiple independent subdomains

  I need some help trying to setup google analytics correct. Here is my setup: We host sites for multiple customers, and each customer have their own subdomain on our site. So we have customerA.oursite.com and customerB.oursite.com As we add more customers we get more subdomains. We do want to track all data for each customer independent, but I don't want to to create a new google tracking code for each new customer. So my plan is to track all visits with "oursite.com", and then I will create a filter in google Analytics to get data for each specific customer(All visits for a specific subdomain). Is this(One tracking code, and a subdomain filter) the right way to do it? To create a subdomain filter i add a new profile for each customer, and then add a custom filter saying include "Request URI" and fill in "CustomerDomain.oursite.com". Is this the correct way to do it? And a general question about filters: Is it really impossible to create a new filter by applying it to data in an existing profile? I would really like to just collect all the data in one "main" profile and then create subdomain filters as we need them. But it seems that google only apply filters to new incomming data, not existing data. Is this really true? The following is my tracking code.   How do I get the websites that I visit to stop localizing the language probably according to my IP location? This is an website specific issue because, for example economist.com and superuser.com do not do it, but Google Checkout and craigslist.org are doing it. Is there a way to setup Ubuntu and Firefox so that English will always be used for all web pages displayed? Edit: Of course many webpages have a link to an English version, but sometimes they don't. For example I believe such links usually appear on the root resource but sometimes I see non-English languages on child resources where such links do not appear. Example: most Blogger.com blogs appear in English but when I go to the blogger's profile ("view my complete profile"), it appears in another language that matches my geographic location.

• Problems restoring old backups in NetBackup 6.5

  I had a server that was decommissioned & replaced last year, and since the server was no longer in use, I deleted it's client & backup policy from the NetBackup Admin Console shortly afterwards. I recently got a request to restore a file from the old server, however when I specify the source client for the restore, I get an error message saying: WARNING: server (backupserver) does not contain any backups for client (oldserver) using the specified policy type (Standard) as requested by client (backupserver). [Ok] In addition to that error, I can't seem to run a Client Backup report on the old client any more to determine what tapes I need to recall in order to re-index and restore the files... My questions: Does deleting the client somehow remove NetBackups ability to ever restore files from the old system, even if the backups have a retention period of infinity? Is there a way to restore the file from the tape, assuming I can figure out which tape I need?

• How do I turn off the click sound when closing a tab in chrome?

  Every time I close a tab in Chrome, it makes a click sound. How do I turn off that sound? I reported that issue back in Oct 2010. The problem doesn't appear on all clients and the reason is still unclear. Common attempts at solving the issue include simply turning off the sound in Windows. But I would prefer to solve the problem at the source. Why is Chrome even triggering that sound to be played? And why is it delayed? The problem would be far less annoying if the sound could easily be related to the action taken. Installing the Chrome Toolbox and muting all tabs has no effect on this issue. When switching to a different Chrome user profile, the new user profile does exhibit the same issue.

• Using Maven to Deploy to Weblogic Clusters

  org.codehaus.mojo weblogic-maven-plugin 2.9.1 We're currently using the weblogic maven plugin successfully to deploy to our local WebLogic 9.2 instances. When we try to deploy to a remote environment we have a problem. We use a two machine cluster, with the admin server and managed server on one machine, and another managed server on a seperate machine. When your plugin uploads the application to the admin server, it doesn't copy it to the second managed server on the seperate machine. This then causes the second managed server a problem, as it cannot find the application in the location where the admin server saved it on its own machine. • MS Windows issue - "Filename or extension is too long"

  I run Microsoft windows on a few of my machines. I don't know if many people know about this issue in the OS but you can't have very long filenames, from what I know Linux can have longer names, I have never run into this issue on my Linux machines. Anyway I run into issues whenever copying folders & files to backup drives. I manually backup of my data, finding and changing names of files, this is very very tedious. Is there a software tool to shorten folders or filenames that are found to be to long on Windows? I have drive image duplication software which does the job but in a way that I don't like, plus moving files can become a hassle at times if the names are too long to copy.

  Im looking to for a script that allows me to add an IMAP account to an already existing email profile. All of our users have an Exchange account as their main email account. We have several shared IMAP accounts that these users need access to. Rather than go to each machine and add each account they need access to over and over, Im hoping there is a script of some nature where I can plug in the needed info (username, password, server, security settings, etc) I then plan to run said script remotely on each machine using powershell. I have found a couple scripts in my searches, but nothing recent, and the majority of them revolve around creating profiles, not adding accounts to an already existing profile. Thoughts?

• About Hard Disk Drive Docks

  I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup?   SITUATION: A larger company acquires a smaller one. IT infrastructure has to be merged. There are no immediate plans to change the current size or role of the smaller company - the offices and production remain. It has a Win 2003 SBS domain server, Win 2000 file server, linux server for SVN and internal Wikipedia, 2 or 3 production machines, LTO backup solution. The servers are approx. 5 years old. Cisco network equippment (switches, wireless, ASA). Mail solution is a hosted Exchange. There are approx. 35 desktops and laptops in the company. IT infrastructure unification: There are 2 IT merging proposals. 1.) Replacing old servers, installing Win Server 2008 domain controller, and setting up either subdomain or domain trust to a larger company. File server and other servers remain local and synchronization should be set up to a centralized location in larger company. Similary with the backup - it remains local and if needed it should be replicated to a centralized location. Licensing is managed by smaller company. 2.) All servers are moved to a centralized location in larger company. As many desktop machines as possible are replaced by thin clients. The actual machines are virtualized and hosted by Terminal server at the same central location. Citrix solutions will be used. Only router and site-2-site VPN connection remain at the smaller company. Backup internet line to insure near 100% availability is needed. Licensing is mainly managed by larger company. Only specialized software for PCs that will not be virtualized is managed by smaller company. I'd like to ask you to discuss both solutions a bit. In your opinion, which is better from the operational point of view? Which is more reliable, cheaper in the long run? Easier to manage from the system administrator's point of view? Easier on the budget and easier to maintain from IT department's point of view? Does anybody have any experience with the second option and how does it perform in production environment? Pros and cons of both? Your input will be of great significance to me. Thank you very much!
