• Do Managers in Python Multiprocessing module lock the shared data?

  This Question has been asked before: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2936626/how-to-share-a-dictionary-between-multiple-processes-in-python-without-locking However I have several doubts regarding the program given in the answer: The issue is that the following step isn't atomic d['blah'] += 1 Even with locking the answer provided in that question would lead to random results. Since Process 1 read value of d['blah'] saves it on the stack increments it and again writes it. In Between a Process 2 can read the d['blah'] as well. Locking means that while d['blah'] is being written or read no other process can access it. Can someone clarify my doubts?

  My church uses ProPresenter for our Sunday morning presntations. Unfortunately, I get the ProPresenter decks from the minister and worship leader midway through the week and have no way to read them at home on my PC. It would be easier if I could set things up and edit them (or at least have an idea of what's in the deck) before Sunday morning. I know ProPresenter can import from PowerPoint, but can the import go the other way as well? Is there a way to read ProPresenter files (.prox) without ProPresenter?

  Like a lot of people on Stack Overflow I love to read books about programming, almost as much as I love to read the lists that people add onto their websites, Blog's and this very website. However, for every gem there are a thousand turds, and to one developer a gem could just be a shiny turd to another. Whilst there are hundreds of book questions on this website asking users to recommend books that they have loved I have decided (after looking for a similar question and not finding it) to create a list of books that users have detested. After all, if we're going to fork out money for these books it'd be a good idea to get both positive and negative aspects out there. Please refer to a specific book, and with it add an image of either the latest version or the version you have read. Also, if you have the time please comment on the answers to provide your experiences with the books.

• Which of FILE* or ifstream has better memory usage?

  I need to read fixed number of bytes from files, whose sizes are around 50MB. To be more precise, read a frame from YUV 4:2:0 CIF/QCIF files (~25KB to ~100KB per frame). Not very huge number but I don't want whole file to be in the memory. I'm using C++, in such a case, which of FILE* or ifstream has better (less/minimal) memory usage? Please kindly advise. Thanks! EDIT: I read fixed number of bytes: 25KB or 100KB (depending on QCIF/CIF format). The reading is in binary mode and forward-only. No seeking needed. No writing needed, only reading. EDIT: If identifying better of them is hard, which one does not require loading the whole file into memory?

So, I would like to ask I could of question to help to write an app to maintain it for me. 1- How can I access a music file and read details of it? I mean, I would like to write some code and passing the directory, my app would read all the music files (understand mp3 files) and with that I would like to access details like title, artist, length and so on... 2- Is there a public source that I could access and update my file?   I have a text file with machine code in this form: B2 0A 05 B2 1A 01 B3 08 00 17 B2 09 18 where an instruction has this format: OP Mode Operand Note: Operand could be 1 or 2 bytes. Where:(example) OP = B2 Mode = 0A Operand = 05 How can I read the bytes in a variable? As shown in the above example. When i read the file I get individual characters. I have an array of pointers where I read individual line, but still cannot solve the problem of reading a byte. Any ideas,suggestions. I hope I am not confusing anyone here. Thank you.

  I have a socketChannel configured as blocking, but when reading byte buffers of 5K from this socket, I get an incomplete buffer sometimes. ByteBuffer messageBody = ByteBuffer.allocate(5*1024); messageBody.mark(); messageBody.order(ByteOrder.BIG_ENDIAN); int msgByteCount = channel.read(messageBody); Ocasionally, messageBody is not completely filled and channel.read() does not return -1 or an exception, but the actual number of bytes read (which is less than 5k). Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

However, as these could result in short writes or reads, an application will typically use the following operations instead: read(), async_read(), write() and async_write(). I don't really understand that remark as read(), async_read(), write() and async_write() can also end up in short writes or reads, right? Why are those functions not the same? Should I use them at all? Can someone clarify that remark for me?

  In C++ there is a concept of a "friend", which has access to a class's private variables and functions. So if you have: class Foo { friend class Bar; private: int x; } then any instance of the class Bar can modify any Foo instance's x member, despite it being private, because Bar is a friend of Foo. Now I have a situation in Java where this functionality would come in handy. There are three classes: Database, Modifier, Viewer. The Database is just a collection of variables (like a struct). Modifier should be "friends" with Database; that is, it should be able to read and write its variables directly. But Viewer should only be able to read Database's variables. How is this best implemented? Is there a good way to enforce Viewer's read-only access of Database?

  Hi, I'm using MS log application block for logging my application event into a file called app-trace.log which located on the c:\temp folder. I'm trying to find the best way to read this file at runtime and display it when the user asks for it. now i have 2 issues: it seems that this kind of feature is not supported by the framework, hence i have to write this reader myself. am i missing something here? is there any better way of getting this data (w/o buffering it in the memory or saving it into another file). if i'm taking the only alternative that left for me, and implementing the reader myself, when i'm tring to do: System.IO.FileStream fs = new System.IO.FileStream(@"c:\temp\app-trace.log", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); i'm getting "File being used by another process c#", probably the file is locked by the application block. is there any way to access and read it anyhow? I have 01 Method that this class library exposes " string GetConnectionString(string name) However even though the app.config in this class library has 3 connstrings it does not read this config.exe.How can I make it read the app.config that resides withing this dll? Again, Usually you will have a web or windows app with a config and it will all work. Mine is a special case I need to read the connectionstring within this class library.   I am trying to do a simple read of an Avro file stored in HDFS. I found out how to read it when it is on the local file system.... I cannot give the openReader a Path or an FSDataInputStream. How can I simply read an Avro file in HDFS? EDIT: I got this to work by creating a custom class (SeekableHadoopInput) that implements SeekableInput. I "stole" this from "Ganglion" on github. Still, seems like there would be a Hadoop/Avro integration path for this. Thanks

  I am modifying QuartzDemo example app and want to do set and read values of integer type variables in other classes which are already included. For example, in MainViewController.m I want to set a numeric value (simple numbers from 1-100) to a variable which is then going to be called (read) in file QuartzImages.m.   Here's my question. What is the best way to determine what bit architecture your app is running on? What I am looking to do: On a 64 bit server I want my app to read 64 bit datasources (stored in reg key Software\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources) and if its 32 bit I want to read 32 bit datasources, (i.e. Read from Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources). I might be missing the point, but I don't want to care what mode my app is running in. I simply want to know if the OS is 32 or 64 bit. [System.Environment.OSVersion.Platform doesn't seem to be cutting it for me. Its returning Win32NT on my local xp machine and on a win2k8 64 bit server (even when all my projects are set to target 'any cpu')]

  I'm learning Java EE 6. I've seen how much progress it has achieved in this release of the umbrella specification. EJBs 3.1 are far easier and more lightweight than previous versions, and CDI is amazing. I'm not familiar with Spring, but I often read that it offered some neat features that the Java EE stack didn't. Yet I also read now that JEE has caught up, and can now fully compete with Spring. I know that choosing from both depends on many factors, but if we only focus on features, say the latest trends etc. Which one has the leading edge?. Can Spring 3 offer some assets The JAVA EE 6 stack can't? Also, what about Seam framework? From what I read it's like java ee 6 but with some additions?

I want to notify myself via email if something wrong got happened in the moving process, as I am running this script on the Hadoop Cluster, so it might be possible that cluster went down while this was running etc etc. So how can I have better error handling mechanism in this shell script? Any thoughts?
