• External optical drive won't plug 'n play...sometimes.

  alright, I've looked a lot of different ways, but here goes. i have an external DVD burner that connects via USB and should be plug 'n play however sometimes when I connect it a message pops up requesting any CD or installation software it came with. It didn't come with any though. The confusing part is that if I wait a couple weeks and plug it in, then it works fine, but if I turn it off and back on the problem arises again. I've tried different computers, same problem. There's little to no customer support from the company, Ativa, and no drivers for the product. I'm hoping there's a registry trick for this. any help?

• Remote Yum mirror

  I have a bunch of remote computers that must be updated to the most recent packages for RedHat 4 and RedHat 5. I am using mrepo to mirror the RHN packages, however the remote computers do not have an internet connection. Because of this I have to update the mirror server that is part of the remote computers with a dvd. This is to cut down shipping costs to just a dvd. I am attempting to script this so I can fit all of the new packages on a CD or a DVD. I send updates about once or twice a month depending on package requirements. So my question is, is their a good method to do this so that the only things transferred are the new packages? I wish I could just use rsync. Thanks.

• Virtual box - How to add disks and move var, opt and home to them?

  I created a CentOS 5.6 Guest OS Virtual Machine. I made the first disk 10GB, I am rapidly outgrowing it. It was suggested that I make disks for my /var, /opt and /home directories and move them so I can better manage the disks for backing up and what not. This sounds like a good idea. I know how to create the disks in Virtual Box. I have dug around Google and the internet in general and all my attempts at doing this have failed. Snapshots are awesome! I can get the drives fdisked, and I have had limited success mounting them to /mnt/var, /mnt/home and /mnt/opt, but even in single user mode ( init 1 ) I can't get the entire contents of the directories to move over, and then the machine won't reboot correctly. cd /var cp * -ax /mnt/var The /var directory in particular is not wanting to move everything to the new location. How do I format, mount and move the /var, /opt and /home to my new disks?

• Adding git branch to bash prompt on snow leopard

I also have this alias: alias reload='. ~/.bash_profile' Sample run: user@machine:~/dev/rails$cd git_folder/ user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$git checkout master Switched to branch 'master' user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(test)$reload user@machine:~/dev/rails/git_folder(master)$ As you can see it is being set correctly but only if I reload bash_profile. I have wasted way to much time on this. I am using bash on snow leopard. Please help!

• Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  Hey guys, I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Unable to boot to Ubuntu. Inconsistency in disk, X server didn't start. Illegal blocks in Inode

  I am unable to boot into my Ubuntu system. First I get that fsck died with exit status 4 Then I try to do it manually as prompted and I get that an Inode has illegal blocks and asked to clear it. Upon googling, I found that is because my HD has some problems I booted via Live cd and took a dd of the entire Ubuntu on an external HDD just in case. Is it safe to clear all the illegal blocks. How do I safely restore my environment if I replace my HD. Is there any thing i can do in the meanwhile to continue to use my laptop without significant loss of data. Perhaps a related error, the x server fails to start

• Cannot login to OpenManage Server Administrator

  After freshly installed OpenManage Server Administrator from the CD that comes with my new server, Dell PowerEdge T110, I still could not figure out how to login successfully to the application. The server is running Windows 2008 SR2 Foundation and serves as a domain controller. I access its web interface locally using Firefox 3.6. On the login page and choose local system login. OMSA user's guide seems to state that I should be able to login using an Active Directory user. I tried Administrator, my_domain\Administrator, a a few combinations with the correct password. But none of them can logged in. Does Server Administrator requires any additional treatment to the user accounts, or what are the steps I missed here?

• Windows 7 installation asks for DVD drivers

  I have installed Windows XP on my machine (Company CQ5020NL). Before I was able to do that, I set the SATA controller to IDE in the bios. Now I want to install Windows 7 upgrade. The DVD boots into the installation setup, but when I click "Install now" and am asked to load "A required CD/DVD drive device". When I click "Browse" I can browse the installation dvd and the drive I want to install to. I have tried all the SATA options in the bios already. I have no idea what to do... can anybody help me out?

  I'm trying to create this script that will check the computer host name then search a master list for the value to return a corresponding value in the csv file. Then open another file and do a find an replace. I know this should be easy but haven't done so much in python before. • insert system disk error after switchting SATA cables

  I have 5 hard disks built in my computer, two connected by IDE cables, three by SATA. Today I had to return two of the SATA cables to my room mate. So I grabbed another one I had floating around and connected the remaining disk by unplugging my DVD R/W. Now I receive the 'insert system disk and press enter' error after booting. Disks and cables seem to be fine, since all the disks are recognized in the BIOS. Also, I can mount the disks using a live CD w/o problems. I also tried different orderings of the cables (i.e. plugging the disks in different plugs on the mainboard), I'm not sure if that even matters using SATA. Any Ideas what might be the problem here? The OS installed are Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10, the bootloader installed is GRUB. PS: No RAID involved, JBOD.

• "Request not supported" in IPCONFIG (WinXP SP3)

  In a customer PC (Windows XP SP3), suddenly the network went down: the network adapter appears with an error mark. I replaced the network card, but the new one does the same thing. When I enter IPCONFIG, XP shows this error (in standard and safe mode): Internal error occurred Request not supported Unable to query host name If I start the system with a boot cd the PC runs fine, so the problem seems to be in the XP installation. I tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the network card in the Device Manager disabling and reenabling the card netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset catalog and a couple of "reset" programs (WinsockxpFix.exe, etc) with no luck. Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling XP? TIA, Pablo

• Reinstalling Mac OS X without original disc

  I've had Mac OS X Lion installed on a mid-2011 iMac. I've erased the main partition and when I try to repair OS installation it connects to the Internet and says that it can't continue and I should contact Apple Support. I don't have original CD which should've come with an iMac. How can I install at least some version of OS X? Update: I've downloaded what looks like an installation app for Mac OS X Lion with a 4.6Gb InstallESD.dmg file but can't open it on Windows. I've tried PowerISO and MagicISO to no effect. Is it possible to create Mac OS installation media on Windows?

  I have a linksys router WRT54G2 connected to a cable broadband. Just last week, everything was working perfectly - I would be able to connect my laptop to the internet using WiFi. However, starting last week, I suddenly lost my internet connection. At first I thought something was wrong with my ISP. However, when I tried connecting the cable directly to my laptop, I found out that there was no problem with the internet connection after all. It appears that it is only my router that cannot get IP address. I have already tried cloning my MAC address and reconfiguring my router using the setup CD, but nothing worked. • zip being too nice (Mac OS X)

  I use zip to do a regular backup of a local directory onto a remote machine. They don't believe in things like rsync here, so it's the best I can do (?). It never seems to get above 5%. I tried making it nice -20 but that didn't make any difference. Is it just the network or disc speeds bottlenecking the process or am I doing something wrong?

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this?   Hello Experts, Application : I am working on one mid-large size application which will be used as a product, we need to decide on our DAL layer. Application UI is in Silverlight and DAL layer is going to be behind service layer. We are also moving ahead with domain model, so our DB tables and domain classes are not having same structure. So patterns like Data Mapper and Repository will definitely come into picture. I need to design DAL Layer considering below mentioned factors in priority manner Speed of Development with above average performance Maintenance Future support and stability of the technology Performance Limitation : 1) As we need to strictly go ahead with microsoft, we can not use NHibernate or any other ORM except EF 4.0 2) We can use any code generation tool (Should be Open source or very cheap) but it should only generate code in .Net, so there would not be any licensing issue on per copy basis. Questions I read so many articles about EF 4.0, on outset it looks like that it is still lacking in features from NHibernate but it is considerably better then EF 1.0 So, Do you people feel that we should go ahead with EF 4.0 or we should stick to ADO .Net and use any code geneartion tool like code smith or any other you feel best Also i need to answer questions like what time it will take to port application from EF 4.0 to ADO .Net if in future we stuck up with EF 4.0 for some features or we are having serious performance issue. In reverse case if we go ahead and choose ADO .Net then what time it will take to swith to EF 4.0 Lastly..as i was going through the article i found the code only approach (with POCO classes) seems to be best suited for our requirement as switching is really easy from one technology to other. Please share your thoughts on the same and please guide on the above questions

  I am trying to setup a daily mirror of a mercurial repository - code.python.org in particular - within our local network, and serve that via Apache HTTPD. On the remote host that hosts apache, I did this: $ cd /var/www $ hg clone http://code.python.org/hg/trunk/ On my macbook, I ran: $ hg -v clone http://remote/trunk/ (falling back to static-http) abort: No such file or directory: http://remote/trunk/.hg/store/00manifest.i Google does not show any relevant result for this particular error. I remember back in those days being able to setup Bazaar mirrors by a simple clone. Doesn't Mercurial work like that? How do I setup a mirror that must further act like a clone URL?

• Linux and GEForge 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GEForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with fedora 12 and ubuntu 9.1 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on ubuntu, it simply hang up during the boot. With fedora I get this erro: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Have I to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

  I have an xml file in a flat structure. We do not control the format of this xml file, just have to deal with it. I've renamed the fields because they are highly domain specific and don't really make any difference to the problem. <attribute name="Title">Book A</attribute> <attribute name="Code">1</attribute> <attribute name="Author"> <value>James Berry</value> <value>John Smith</value> </attribute> <attribute name="Title">Book B</attribute> <attribute name="Code">2</attribute> <attribute name="Title">Book C</attribute> <attribute name="Code">3</attribute> <attribute name="Author"> <value>James Berry</value> </attribute> Key things to note: the file is not particularly hierarchical. Books are delimited by an occurance of an attribute element with name='Title'. But the name='Author' attribute node is optional. Is there a simple xpath statement I can use to find the authors of book 'n'? It is easy to identify the title of book 'n', but the authors value is optional. And you can't just take the following author because in the case of book 2, this would give the author for book 3. I have written a state machine to parse this as a series of elements, but I can't help thinking there would have been a way to directly get the results that I want.

• HP Server bios boot delay

  I'm just going to throw this out there in case anyone else has run accross this... I have an HP DL320 G5p that had the motherboard replaced due to a faulty NIC port. After several calls to HP, two motherboard replacements, PCI riser card replacements, Processor replacement, and power supply replacement, the server takes approx. 10 minutes before it boots into the BIOS. It then boots up with no issues. We've run the HP smart start cd and performed the system tests and everything passed. All firmware has also been upgraded to the latest as well. Has anyone else seen this and found a fix? I am still working with HP, but there seems to be a struggle on their part to figure this out, so I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this and found a fix - thanks...

Script by AJR to update local spamassassin rules cd /tmp wget -c http://www.stearns.org/sa-blacklist/sa-blacklist.current mv sa-blacklist.current local.cf -f mv local.cf /etc/mail/spamassassin -f rm local.cf -f /etc/init.d/psa-spamassassin restart now, this script runs fine, but plesk doesn't seem to recognize the blacklist in its GUI. which is annoying, especially because plesk itself writes to /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf. i wasn't able to find out the secret place, where plesk distinguishes between entries in local.cf added via GUI and command line. any help is appreciated! thanks.
