• How can we make agile enjoyable for developers that like to personally, independently own large chunks from start to finish

  We’re roughly midway through our transition from waterfall to agile using scrum; we’ve changed from large teams in technology/discipline silos to smaller cross-functional teams. As expected, the change to agile doesn’t suit everyone. There are a handful of developers that are having a difficult time adjusting to agile. I really want to keep them engaged and challenged, and ultimately enjoying coming to work each day. These are smart, happy, motivated people that I respect on both a personal and a professional level. The basic issue is this: Some developers are primarily motivated by the joy of taking a piece of difficult work, thinking through a design, thinking through potential issues, then solving the problem piece by piece, with only minimal interaction with others, over an extended period of time. They generally complete work to a high level of quality and in a timely way; their work is maintainable and fits with the overall architecture. Transitioning to a cross-functional team that values interaction and shared responsibility for work, and delivery of working functionality within shorter intervals, the teams evolve such that the entire team knocks that difficult problem over. Many people find this to be a positive change; someone that loves to take a problem and own it independently from start to finish loses the opportunity for work like that. This is not an issue with people being open to change. Certainly we’ve seen a few people that don’t like change, but in the cases I’m concerned about, the individuals are good performers, genuinely open to change, they make an effort, they see how the rest of the team is changing and they want to fit in. It’s not a case of someone being difficult or obstructionist, or wanting to hoard the juiciest work. They just don’t find joy in work like they used to. I’m sure we can’t be the only place that hasn’t bumped up on this. How have others approached this? If you’re a developer that is motivated by personally owning a big chunk of work from end to end, and you’ve adjusted to a different way of working, what did it for you?

• Can the csv format be defined by a regex?

  A colleague and I have recently argued over whether a pure regex is capable of fully encapsulating the csv format, such that it is capable of parsing all files with any given escape char, quote char, and separator char. The regex need not be capable of changing these chars after creation, but it must not fail on any other edge case. I have argued that this is impossible for just a tokenizer. The only regex that might be able to do this is a very complex PCRE style that moves beyond just tokenizing. I am looking for something along the lines of: ... the csv format is a context free grammar and as such, it is impossible to parse with regex alone ... Or am I wrong? Is it possible to parse csv with just a POSIX regex? For example, if both the escape char and the quote char are ", then these two lines are valid csv: """this is a test.""","" "and he said,""What will be, will be."", to which I replied, ""Surely not!""","moving on to the next field here..."

• Autocomplete in Silverlight with Visual Studio 2010

  Last week I keep searching on how to use the autocomplete in silverligth with visual studio 2010 but most of the examples that I find they are using a textbox or combobox for the autocomplete. I tried to study those examples and apply to the single autocomplete from tools on my silverlight project. And now this is the result. I will use a database again from my previous post (Silverlight Simple DataBinding in DataGrid) to show how the autocomplete works with database. • Policy Administration is the Top 2011 IT Priority for Insurers

  The current issue of Insurance Networking News includes an interesting column by Novarica's Matt Josefowicz.  Recent research by the firm revealed that policy administration replacement or extension is the most common strategic IT project for insurers this year.  The article goes on to note that insurers are keenly focused on the business capabilities that can be delivered once the system is in production as well as the ability to leverage agile development methodologies and true business/IT collaboration during implementation.   When you work on the same project for a relative long time you get more experienced. You may also master many new technologies. Besides the coding you may also do what would classify other roles. There is however one part of your career that may not get updated. That is your job title. It seems beside all technological hypes there is also job title hype. It all depends on which company you work for. Many companies give employer better job titles because they want to keep them. The employee doesn’t change their job because the current title is much better, even if they would get better working condition and benefits if they changed their job. When you consider changing you job you notice that your job title is kind of “outdated”. People with less skill have a much better title for their job than you. You may very well explain what you did on your project but the fact is that many employers go by the title. So here are the questions: Do you change your current title in your CV? • Limiting game loop to exactly 60 tics per second (Android / Java)

  So I'm having terrible problems with stuttering sprites. My rendering and logic takes less than a game tic (16.6667ms) However, although my game loop runs most of the time at 60 ticks per second, it sometimes goes up to 61 - when this happens, the sprites stutter. Currently, my variables used are: //Game updates per second final int ticksPerSecond = 60; //Amount of time each update should take final int skipTicks = (1000 / ticksPerSecond); This is my current game loop @Override public void onDrawFrame(GL10 gl) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub //This method will run continuously //You should call both 'render' and 'update' methods from here //Set curTime initial value if '0' //Set/Re-set loop back to 0 to start counting again loops=0; while(System.currentTimeMillis() > nextGameTick && loops < maxFrameskip){ SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().updateLogic(); //Time correction to compensate for the missing .6667ms when using int values nextGameTick+=skipTicks; timeCorrection += (1000d/ticksPerSecond) % 1; nextGameTick+=timeCorrection; timeCorrection %=1; //Increase loops loops++; } render(); } I realise that my skipTicks is an int and therefore will come out as 16 rather that 16.6667 However, I tried changing it (and ticksPerSecond) to Longs but got the same problem). I also tried to change the timer used to Nanotime and skiptics to 1000000000/ticksPerSecond, but everything just ran at about 300 ticks per seconds. All I'm attempting to do is to limit my game loop to 60 - what is the best way to guarantee that my game updates never happen at more than 60 times a second? Please note, I do realise that very very old devices might not be able to handle 60 although I really don't expect this to happen - I've tested it on the lowest device I have and it easily achieves 60 tics. So I'm not worried about a device not being able to handle the 60 ticks per second, but rather need to limit it - any help would be appreciated.

• Fonts look bad in Microsoft Office using Wine

  Office fonts in wine look very different from what they look in Windows or LibreOffice. As can be seen from the attached screenshots, they look blurry in some sizes and aliased in other sizes. You can see the differences not only in the document text but also in the ribbon menu. It happens with a lot of fonts. I'm testing it with Office 2010 now, but it also happens in Office 2007. Things I've tried: Changing fontsmooth settings with winetricks - made no difference. Copying fonts from a Windows system - made no difference. Using Ubuntu's fonts (by removing the Windows/Fonts from the wineprefix) - removed the blurriness in some fonts but increased aliasing. The three screenshots correspond to different "configurations": office_wine.png - Office Word in Wine using Wine's original fonts; office_nowinefonts.png - Office Word in Wine using Ubuntu's fonts; office_windows.png - Office Word in Windows. PS: please make sure to see the screenshots without scaling them to notice the problem. EDIT: A screenshot of how Calibri behaves in Wine here.

• How to disable an ASP.NET linkbutton when clicked

  Scenario: User clicks a LinkButton in your ASP.NET page and you want to disable it immediately using javascript so that the user cannot accidentally click it again.  I wrote about disabling a regular submit button here: How to disable an ASP.NET button when clicked.  But the method described in the other blog post does not work for disabling a LinkButton.  This is because the Post Back Event Reference is called using a snippet of javascript from within the href of the anchor tag: <a id="MyContrl_MyButton" href="javascript:__doPostBack('MyContrl$MyButton','')">My Button</a> If you try to add an onclick event to disable the button, even though the button will become disabled, the href will still be allowed to be clicked multiple times (causing duplicate form submissions).  To get around this, in addition to disabling the button in the onclick javascript, you can set the href to “#” to prevent it from doing anything on the page.  You can add this to the LinkButton from your code behind like this: MyButton.Attributes.Add("onclick", "this.href='#';this.disabled=true;" + Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(MyButton, "").ToString()); This code adds javascript to set the href to “#” and then disable the button in the onclick event of the LinkButton by appending to the Attributes collection of the ASP.NET LinkButton control.  Then the Post Back Event Reference for the button is called right after disabling the button.  Make sure you add the Post Back Event Reference to the onclick because now that you are changing the anchor href, the button still needs to perform the original postback. With the code above now the button onclick event will look something like this: onclick="this.href='#';this.disabled=true;__doPostBack('MyContrl$MyButton','');" The anchor href is set to “#”, the linkbutton is disabled, AND then the button post back method is called. • Dynamic/Adaptive RLE

  So, I'm developing a 2D, tile based game and a map maker thingy - all in Java. The problem is that recently I've been having some memory issues when about 4 maps are loaded. Each one of these maps are composed of 128x128 tiles and have 4 layers (for details and stuff). I already spent a good amount of time searching for solutions and the best thing I found was run-length enconding (RLE). It seems easy enough to use with static data, but is there a way to use it with data that is constantly changing, without a big drop in performance? In my maps, supposing I'm compressing the columns, I would have 128 rows, each with some amount of data (hopefully less than it would be without RLE). Whenever I change a tile, that whole row would have to be checked and I'm affraid that would slow down too much the production (and I'm in a somewhat tight schedule). Well, worst case scenario I work on each map individually, and save them using RLE, but it would be really nice if I could avoind that. EDIT: What I'm currently using to store the data for the tiles is a 2D array of HashMaps that use the layer as key and store the id of the tile in that position - like this: private HashMap< Integer, Integer [][]

• Roadmap for Thinktecture IdentityServer

  I got asked today if I could publish a roadmap for thinktecture IdentityServer (idrsv in short). Well – I got a lot of feedback after B1 and one of the biggest points here was the data access layer. So I made two changes: I moved to configuration database access code to EF 4.1 code first. That makes it much easier to change the underlying database. So it is now just a matter of changing the connection string to use real SQL Server instead of SQL Compact. Important when you plan to do scale out. I included the ASP.NET Universal Providers in the download. This adds official support for SQL Azure, SQL Server and SQL Compact for the membership, roles and profile features. Unfortunately the Universal Provider use a different schema than the original ASP.NET providers (that sucks btw!) – so I made them optional. If you want to use them go to web.config and uncomment the new provider. Then there are some other small changes: The relying party registration entries now have added fields to add extra data that you want to couple with the RP. One use case could be to give the UI a hint how the login experience should look like per RP. This allows to have a different look and feel for different relying parties. I also included a small helper API that you can use to retrieve the RP record based on the incoming WS-Federation query string. WS-Federation single sign out is now conforming to the spec. I made certificate based endpoint identities for SSL endpoints optional. This caused some problems with configuration and versioning of existing clients. I hope I can release the RC in the next days. If there are no major issues, there will be RTM very soon!

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Thanks heaps. • So are we ever getting the technological singularity

  I´m still waiting for an AI robot that will pass the Turing test. I keep going back to http://www.a-i.com/ and nothing. I don´t know much about AI but, did anyone ever tried to make a genetic algorithm whose evolution algorithm itself evolves? Or how about one whose algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm evolve, evolves? Or one whose genetic algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm evolve, evolves? Or how about an algorithm that abstracts all this into a potentially infinitely deep tree of genetic evolution algorithms? Aren´t we just failing as programmers? And I don´t think we can blame the processors speed. If you make and application that simulates consciousness you will get a Nobel prize no matter how many hours it takes to respond to your questions. But nobody did it. It almost reminds me to Randi´s $1000000 paranormal challenge. As I keep going back to AI chat bots, they keep getting better at changing the subject on a way that seems natural. But if I tell them something like "if 'x' is 2 then whats two times 'x'?" then they don't have a clue what I'm talking about. And I don't think they need a whole human brain simulation to be able to answer to something like that. They don't need feelings or perception. This is just language and logics. I don't think my perception of the color red gives me the ability to understand that if 'x' is 2 then two times 'x' is 4. I'm sure we are just missing some elemental principle we cannot grasp because it's probably stuck behind our eyes. What do you think?

• Setting different default applications for different Desktop Environment

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with default Unity interface. I installed later the KDE desktop, XFCE, LXDE, gnome-shell and Cinnamon. The KDE comes with different default applications than Unity, such as kwrite for text editing, konsole as virtual terminal, kfontview for font viewing and installing, dolphin as File browser etc. Other DE come with some other default applications. The problem arises when you want to open a file such as a text file, with which can both be opened by gedit and kwrite, I want to use kwrite on KDE and gedit on Unity or Gnome. But, there is no way to set like this. I can set default application for text file by changing respective settings in both KDE and Unity, but It become default for both DE. For example, If I set kfontviewer as default font viewing application in KDE, it also opens fonts when I am in Unity or Gnome and vice versa. This is a problem because, loading other DE's program takes long time than the default one for the used DE. My question is: Can I use different default applications for different DE? How?

  Trying to get casperjs running on Ubuntu 12.04. But when I run it I get "No such file". I can fix it by changing the first line of the casperjs python file from: #!/usr/bin/env python to: #!/usr/bin/python Result: $ casperjs --version 1.1.0-DEV I managed to fix it, but I'm wondering why it didn't work with #!/usr/bin/env python, since that seems to be a normal interpreter line. Do I have something configured wrong? • Rendering large and high poly meshes

  Consider an huge terrain that has a lot polygons, to render this terrain I thought of following techniques: Using height-map instead of raw meshes: Yes, but I want to create a lot of caves and stuff that simply wont work with height-maps. Using voxels: Yes, but I think that this would be to much since I don't even want to support changing terrain.. Split into multiple chunks and do some sort of LOD with the mesh: Yes, but how would I do that? Tessellation usually creates more detail not less. Precompute the same mesh in lower poly version (like Mudbox does) and depending on the distance it renders one of these meshes: Graphic memory is limited and uploading only the chunks won't solve that problem since the traffic would be too high. IMO the last one sounds really good, but imagine the following process: Upload and render the chunks depending on the current player position. [No problem] Player will walk straight forward Now we maybe have to change on of the low poly chunk with the high poly one So, Remove the low poly chunk and load the high poly chunk [Already to much traffic here, I think] I am not very experienced in graphic programming and maybe the upper process is totally okay but somehow I think it is too much. And how about the disk space it would require.. I think 3 kind of levels would be fine but isn't that also too much? (I am using OpenGL but I don't think that this is important)

• Can't use the hardware scissor any more, should I use the stencil buffer or manually clip sprites?

  I wrote a simple UI system for my game. There is a clip flag on my widgets that you can use to tell a widget to clip any children that try to draw outside their parent's box (for scrollboxes for example). The clip flag uses glScissor, which is fed an axis aligned rectangle. I just added arbitrary rotation and transformations to my widgets, so I can rotate or scale them however I want. Unfortunately, this breaks the scissor that I was using as now my clip rectangle might not be axis aligned. There are two ways I can think of to fix this: either by using the stencil buffer to define the drawable area, or by having a wrapper function around my sprite drawing function that will adjust the vertices and texture coords of the sprites being drawn based on the clipper on the top of a clipper stack. Of course, there may also be other options I can't think of (something fancy with shaders possibly?). I'm not sure which way to go at the moment. Changing the implementation of my scissor functions to use the stencil buffer probably requires the smallest change, but I'm not sure how much overhead that has compared to the coordinate adjusting or if the performance difference is even worth considering.

• Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. After starting it, I get a crash: giowck@giowck-desktop:~$ gimp (gimp:1899): GLib-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.28.6/./glib/goption.c:2132: ignoring no-arg, optional-arg or filename flags (8) on option of type 0 Speicherzugriffsfehler (in English: "Memory error") What can I do to run Gimp? • Auto-mount filesystems on boot fails (12.10)

  I have a Compaq HP 8200 slim desktop running 12.10 with encrypted partitions (set up with the text-based installer). Everything's working fine, except... When I boot the computer, my /boot and /boot/efi directories refuse to mount automatically. I'm dropped to the root console, where I must enter 'mountall -v', and everything then continues on just fine. This was happening under 12.04. I've recently upgraded to 12.10, and the problem persists. Except now, in addition to /boot and /boot/efi not mounting, roughly 50% of the time /var will not be auto-mounted as well (and again, 'mountall -v' fixes allows me to boot and move on). I'm puzzled about this one. Running 'fsck' doesn't seem to do anything (the filesystems aren't damaged anyway). What can I try to solve this issue?
