• Can't connect to memcached

  We currently have memcached running on CentOS. None of our PHP applications can connect, have tried multiple applications trying to establish access. The most informative PHP error we get is: "Memcache::get() [function.Memcache-get]: Server 127.0.0.1 (tcp 11211) failed with: Permission denied (13) in /var/www/.." memcached 1.4.5 PECL 2.25 We can telnet and it works. IP tables is full access from lo to lo. We've tried this on two different servers with both compiled version and the rpm in CentOS 5.5 and get the same result. Is there anything fairly obvious that we are missing?

• Snort monitoring of spanning interface

  I have configured a Cisco 3500 switch with a port SPAN and have my snort node (fedora 13) plugged into it. I am running snort as a daemon and have configured a rule to log all tcp traffic but I am only seeing traffic with a destination of the snort node. I know that the SPAN port is working and wanted to know if there is a specific option that I needed to start snort with in order for it to pickup all the traffic? Or is there something that I have missed here? Many thanks.

• Printing Booklet Page Size in Adobe Reader 4-in-1

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this.   I have a song that Windows can't play because there is a question mark in the name of the file. "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?.ogg" // as an example So I try to rename it and Windows complains whether I try it in Explorer or from command prompt. Error I get when trying to copy, rename, or move is: The Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect Is there a Windows way to force a rename in this case? Update I'll keep an eye on this question, but after 13 answers and many attempts (aside form 3rd party solutions) it seems that Windows can't do this (or at least my windows can't, no short names). So I'm accepting the answer which was my original solution anyway of using Linux. It would be nice to see Windows handle this somehow, so don't stop just because I've accepted this answer, the question still stands!

• Map keycode 133+54 to shift+control+c in Linux for Mac keyboard?

  On Linux Mint 13 - Mate using the Terminal program Terminator with a Mac keyboard. I want the command key for COPY/PASTE to behave as it does on the Mac. I have been able to change it to treat the command key as a control key, and this works fine for most apps except in the Terminal program. Using xev when I press command+c it's a keycode of 133 + 54. This is a ^c to the Terminal app which acts like a ^c in a shell. The default for COPY which can be changed in Terminator is Shift+Control+c. Is there a way to map the keycode of 133 + 54 to Shift+Control+c, but only for the Terminator app? Thanks!

• Cannot connect to FTP server from external host

  I have a FTP server (vsftpd) setuped on a Linux box (Ubuntu server). When I try to connect with a computer on the same network everything works fine as expected. But as soon the IP is external it won't connect.. I first assumed the port was blocked, but then: localserver:$ sudo tail -f /var/log/vsftpd.log Wed Jan 13 14:21:17 2010 [pid 2407] CONNECT: Client "xxx.xxx.107.4" remotemachine:$ netcat svn-motion.no-ip.biz 21 220 FTP Server And it hangs there. • Macbook Air Reboot after Wake when Windows 7 Running in VM

  Is anyone who is running a Windows 7 VM on a new 2011 i5 Macbook Air (I have the 13" w/128 SSD) able to put their Macbook air to sleep for extended periods of time (like overnight) without manually shutting down or suspending a VM that's running in Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox? I've tried all three virtualization products with no success. With all three, if I forget to manually shutdown or suspend the VM, OSX reboots when I try and wake the Macbook. Same goes if I try and use the Deep Sleep widget. Parallels support openly admitted that this was an issue and thankfully gave me a refund. I've also tried the trial version of VMware and VirtualBox, but the behavior is the same. Should I just give up or is anyone out there having more success at this?

• Spambot Infection Detection

  My server has been blocked by CBL for participating in curtwail spambot. Initially we suspected that it was coming from a PC and not from the server, but the router is blocking all packets on 25 except those coming from the server. I have just executed the tcpdump command and every 5 minutes I see a flurry of activity on port 25 that is very suspicious and I am sure that there is some process running on the server: 13:02:30.027436 IP exprod5og110.obsmtp.com.53803 > ubuntu.local.smtp: Flags [S], seq 171708781, win 5744, options [mss 1436,sackOK,TS val 3046699707 ecr 0,nop,wscale 2], length 0 I have stopped postfix, and yet there is still traffic on port 25 above. But how can I find what process is actually communicating on port 25 as it only rund for a few seconds and so for example lsof -i :25 will never catch it. I have been working on this now for 2 days, it is a live server and I cannot simply shut it down, any suggestion on how I can detect the source of this email bot process ?

• Is 50% download speed on a wireless G network normal?

  I have a wired connection of about 36Mb/s, but my wireless speed is max at about 18-19Mb/s. I have a WRT54G-TM (T-Mobile, 802.11G) router with DD-WRT firmware - I've upgraded it to latest build. Done some settings changes: changed channel - 13 wireless network mode - G-only ACK Timing - 0 Fragmentation Threshold and RTS Threshold - 2304 Basic Rate - All Signal/Noise ratio: -46/-94, signal quality ~50-60%. Is this normal with G networks? Edit: The AP is located about 2 meters from laptop, no walls or metal objects, but its next to a TV. I've done a channel scan (had problems locating it, go to "Status - Wireless - Site survey" - lame naming) and everybody else is on channels 1 and 6. Switched to channel 11 but it didn't help. As for trasmit power I got best results with default 71mw. The antenna might be a factor, I'm using the default 2 antennas.

  I have a drupal-based website on a VPS with 1GB RAM and 1Ghz processor share. The webserver is nginx along with php-fastcgi. Currently I am using 10 nginx and 13 php-fastcgi processes. The server load is high most of the times while half of the RAM is unused. The CPU usage rarely reaches 80%. I have tried some other combinations of nginx/php-fastcgi but am not sure what is the optimal combination because I am quite ignorant about what's going on below the surface. So I appreciate if you could share your experience or give me some clues.

Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0 I looked in /tmp and saw the sess_* files have the following permissions ---------- 1 vanced vanced 1240 Jan 20 08:48 sess_d39cac7f80834b2ee069d0c867ac169c All the session files look like this. So obviously, they're unusable by PHP and it's causing me lots of problems. How can I get PHP to set the correct permissions? I've tried changing the directory which php.ini uses to /tmp/phpsessions and the same thing occurs. The directories are a+rwx.

• Sharing files between multiple computers?

  At my school, we have 13 iMacs that we use to make our yearbook. Currently our school has some servers for us, but since we work with so many files ( thousands of pictures, most of which are ~3MB ) it slows down far too much. Is there a way to better share files between our computers? We are on a wireless network and the whole school shares the same servers, we have around probably 400 computers in the school. Is there a hardware fix I can do? Something like buying an external and hooking only yearbook computers to it?

• How can I stop Pages from bolding/italicizing ordered list item numbers/letters?

  I'm writing a long, technical document that uses a lot of ordered lists in Pages '09. Often when I bold or italicize the first bit of text I type for a list item it Pages applies the same styling to the letter or number of that list item. It's been doing this for the first 13 pages I've written and now I've found out that I need to undo that. Is there any place to change this behavior or easily fix existing list item numbers/letters that are styled? The only way I've found is to select the whole list item (all of its content) and removing teh styling (un-bolding and un-italicizing) and then going back in and re-applying my stylings to its content. Definitely not ideal.

• Trying to launch old game using wine

  I'm using wine 1.5.11 on Archlinux, and I try to launch this old game : http://www.cnetfrance.fr/telecharger/waterboy-11006056s.htm?download=1 The problem is that I always get a "Run-time error '13' : Type mismatch" when I try to launch it. • Macbook not connecting to WIFI

  I have been having this problem all week. My Macbook aluminium can't see my wifi network. I have changed the channel to one that isn't being used by neighbours and my iphone picks it up straight away. In other words, the router is fine. It's just the macbook can't see it. This is driving me nuts if anyone can help... My airport card details...   3 room mates share a single 2 Mbps connection. Have a 40GB per month download limit beyond which speed drops to 256Kbps which is annoying. One of the roommates abuses the connection by downloading beyond his quota limit. I have a Netgear WNR1000v2 Wireless router + ADSL Modem to connect to the internet. We all access internet via Wireless router which connects to ADSL Modem. I need a free proxy solution which can help me set 40GB / 3 (13 GB) limit for each person (every person has 2 devices - a PC and a phone with Wifi) Uniform Bandwidth control - when 2 people browse the internet they should get 1 Mbps each, and when 3 people access, they should get 2Mbps divided by 3. After each person crosses their monthly download limit, they should be able to access the internet with 256Kbps speed only or lesser. Can I have a custom firmware on my wireless router do this (or) Do I need a proxy server ? Please point me to any relevant tutorials (for example with Squid).

• SCCM Client Push FAIL - Win2000 box

  When trying to install the SCCM client onto a Windows 2000 box, the install fails. The install script is run through a batch file (CONTENTS: \mdop\SCCM_client\ccmsetup.exe /mp:MDOP /logon smssitecode=MID smsslp=MDOP) hosted on a public area of the network. This script has worked for all machines (mostly Win2003 Server). I've tried enabling all the common services it requires (BITS, IIS Admin, Windows Installer), but it still only runs for a second or two then quits. Their individual arrays are to carry the column information. I have split it up even further with array_slice and array_merge_recursive to look pretty as 2 arrays - 1 holds the column names, the other looks like this: Array ( [0] => sb1 [1] => sb2 [2] => sb3 [3] => pr1 [4] => pr2 [5] => pr3 [6] => sp1 [7] => sp2 [8] => sp3 [9] => spl1 [10] => spl2 [11] => spl3 [12] => ws1 [13] => ws2 [14] => ws3 ) However, when trying to write the table I'm getting keys 0, 1, 2 as the column data, then row break then 3, 4, 5 then row break... etc. I need it to be 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 row break 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 row break etc... • wamp server does not start: Windows 7, 64Bit

  I am trying to install wamp server (following is the exact setup name) on windows 7, 64Bit OS. But it never starts, icon stays in orange color meaning some services did not start. wampserver2.2e-php5.3.13-httpd2.2.22-mysql5.5.24-x64 I have been searching from last 3hours but did not find any solution. Port 80 is not in use. In windows services, when I try to start wampapache service manually, it throws following error: Windows could not start the wampapache service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond ot the start or control request in a timely fashion. apache_error.log is empty. Things use to work fine in windows XP. May be this is a repeated thread, but I did go through similar posts. But nothing worked! Please help!!

• Encoding GBK2312 Condundrum

  I am an amateur coder and I have a small problem. My goal is to have one text input with two buttons. The first button uses a bit of Javascript called SundayMorning to translate the text (to Chinese) The second button submits the text to a URL. The URl requires that Chinese text be encoded it in GBK2312 character set. I have duct taped together various found code to the result I have now. Due to the finicky behavior of the SundayMorning Javascript, my solution is to have two input boxes, the second of which I will hide. Right now, this doesn't work: I am unable to encode the Chinese in GBK2312, no matter what I try. BONUS CONUNDRUM: The second box copies my input letter by letter as I type, but does not copy the Chinese translation that the Javascript returns. Sorry for my janky amateur code. • windows 8 stops working after gparted

  My laptop (windows 8.1) has a big partition so i would like to spit it into two smaller partitions. I tried hirens boot and jumped into gparted (something i have never used before) I resized windows partition (c:) and created a new partition, reboot, and my laptop cant boot I am seeing in gparted - sda1 ntfs recovery 300MB - sda2 fat32 100MB - sda3 unknown 128MB msftres - sda4 is my original C partition - sda5 is the new partition I tried with Windows 8 DVD there are options to automatically fix but it did not work. I also tried with make PC fresh or something like that and windows told me it cant fix because the drive is locked. Any help would be greatly appreciate. I stop playing with the tool now. • Why do I have inconsistent network issues with my laptop's wireless?

  I'm having trouble with my laptop Internet connection. It's patchy at best and resets or freezes a lot. The signal strength is also random. I thought it might be a driver issue but now I don't know. Three other computers using the same wireless network run well. I've switched out wireless routers so I don't think it's the router. I thought it might be the laptop's internal wireless card but I just bought an external USB network card and I'm still having problems. Specs Lenovo T-60p Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Patches/drivers are up to date I only use one of the below at a time, disabling the other: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG v. 13.3.0.137 (Internal wireless) Medialink Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter (USB wireless) Any ideas on what might be the problem?

• Why are special characters such as "carriage return" represented as "^M"?

  Why is ^M used to represent a carriage return in VIM and other contexts? My guess is that M is the 13th letter of the Latin alphabet and a carriage return is \x0D or decimal 13. Is this the reason? Is this representation documented anywhere? I notice that Tab is represented by ^I, which is the ninth letter of the Latin alphabet. Conversely, Tab is \x09 or decimal 9, which supports my theory stated above. However, where might this be documented as fact?
