• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

• VGA resolution with Sony Bravia TV

  I just bought Sony Bravia KDL40S5100 tv. The VGA input is acting weird. I have a Gateway desktop with Windows 7 and Intel 945 graphics. I also have a laptop running Ubuntu 9.04. The TV will not display the gateway when the resolution is over 1360x768, I have to wait for it to time out and bring me back. The Intel driver even urges me to switch to the "recommended" 1920x1080. I just installed Win7 using this tv as the monitor. When the orginial welcome screen started after setup, it started me at 1080. I had to start in safemode to set a res that would work! When I plug my laptop into the TV, 1920x1080 works just fine. Any ideas? This laptop also has Win7, which I am going to try, but I haven't gotten a chance yet.

• Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

• bad ram or bad motherboard

  I have a computer which crashes after about 5-45 seconds of operation. It can run memtest86+, and it doesn't display any errors, but it doesn't prevent it from crashing within the time frame listed above. The heat sink appears to be installed correctly, and I don't think it is related to overheating. The motherboard is connected to the ram and a monitor, nothing else is installed. The processor is an atom 330, running memtest86+ 4.0. Any insight into if the ram is bad or if it is the motherboard/psu/cpu? Thanks!

  I have two 500 GB disks and yesterday I mirrored first drive to the second one using software RAID 1. PC has now been on for 30 hours. Both disks say "Resynching", but there is no progress indicator. In addition, there is a small yellow exclamation mark on both disks. My questions are: How long could the synch take for 500 GB drive with about 150 GB of data? PC has 4 GBs of RAM and AMD dual core 4000+ Is there a way to monitor status of the synching? How can I check what the exclamation mark means?

• Connecting OS X MacBook Pro to DirecTV DVR

  I have a DirecTV DVR which soon will be replaced. The local phone carrier has wired fiber-to-the-door and that DirecTV sat service will soon be history. I have irreplaceable video recordings on the DVR's disk I would like to salvage. I'd like to connect my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.3) to the DVR (male HDMI to male Thunderbolt) and treat the MAC as a TV monitor. I'd like to capture the video stream to a file and then burn it to DVD. This is for my use only, not for distribution. Still researching video capture. Don't yet have a solution. Maybe there isn't one. Any ideas?

  Can anyone let me know how I would reduce time between Last Check Time and Next Scheduled Check on a particular service. I have a very critical task to monitor and the time between checks is currently 5 minutes, which is too long for this service. Can I reduce that time? I need this to be 1 minute or even 30 seconds. I want Nagios to check this service every 30 seconds. • SPF include: too many IP addresses

  I've hit a snag with SPF. The SPF record for my domain will contain four or five entries, plus it will contain: include:sgizmo.com The SPF record for sgizmo.com contains eleven entries! This, plus mine, is way over the maximum ten allowed by the RFC (and probably by most servers). I realize that there has to be a limit in order to prevent DoS attacks. However, in the real world, it is probably not unreasonable for large companies to have many server addresses. Furthermore, must I know monitor my 'include:' counterparts for changes and additions? Must I check weekly, daily, to insure that some combination of changes doesn't suddenly put me over the top? It doesn't seem to me that SPF is suitable for prime time. Is there another way to do this?

• Too many processes?

  VMware Fusion v3.0.1 One vm for Windows XP, converted and recently expanded the disk size. Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2 x 3 GHz dual-core intel xeon machine. Immediately after booting, and before VMware Fusion is launched, the Activity Monitor shows eight processes associated with "vm". What caught my eye is the duplicates: netifup and dhcpd. I noticed this while trying to re-establish network connectivity after the upgrade to 3.0.1. I am not sure when the network connection was clobbered, so I cannot say it happend during the upgrade. Is eight processes typcial? I expect about six, as listed in other notes and documents on the web site. Could this be related to the failure to connect to the network?

  I recently bought a Rosewill 750-M PSU to replace an Antec Earthwatts 500. My computer worked fine before making the switch. After installing the Rosewill PSU, I attempted to boot. Fans spun up for a second, then turned off. After a second, they spun up again and stayed on. However, I had no video output. I put the old Antec PSU back in, and still had the same problem. I put another GPU in the computer, trying both PSUs, and still nothing. I switched out the monitor also, which didn't work. What should I do?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • notebook display problem

  I have RoverScan Voyager notebook. It worked good for a few months. But some day I turned it on and saw that it displays badly. I mean, picture that should be displayed by monitor is copied six times and displayed on screen (6 same small pictures, not crossed each other). And the picture itself is bad - it displayed as interchange of vertical lines (it's really hard to see real picture or distinguish some details on it - it is distorted badly).   We're using OpsView/Nagios to monitor our servers. We've added the SNMP service to all our servers and deployed the configuration via GPO, but one win2k3 server seems to have a problem; it crashes pretty regularly. • How do multiple displays work on a AMD 785G / ATI HD 4200 motherboard?

  I just ordered a ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO which has the AMD 785G chipset and HD4200 integrated graphic. The board has VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs. I'm wondering how many outputs I can run at once, and from what connectors? My guess is that I can only use the VGA, and either the DVI or the HDMI in a dual setup. But not the HDMI and the DVI at the same time. Is this correct? If I have devices plugged into both the HDMI and the DVI ports is there a way to choose between which port I want to use? I have a dual 19" monitor setup, as well as a LCD TV. I'd like to run the VGA and the DVI into my two monitors, and then the HDMI to my TV. Then when I want to watch something on the TV I'd like to be able to switch over from the DVI to the HDMI. Is this possible with out crawling under my desk and unplugging/plugging things in?

  Hello, I was doing some changes to the server (writing an Transport Agent). After trying to install it, I started to get some errors. Now, when connecting to the SMTP server the session hangs just after finishing the DATA section. I'm not sure what happened, I disabled my transport agent and uninstalled it, then restarted the server. The problem persists. • Dell 620 display is too bright to use

  I have a Dell D620 with a display problem. In windows 7 the display seems to be too bright, the text is broken up, the only way to see the mouse is at a very oblique angle. Changing the brightness with fn and brightness control has little/no effect. When I put it in high contrast mode I can see all the colors, but any windows pictures etc are still useless. I cannot get it to connect to an external monitor via VGA port or via a USB-VGA connector.

• Reliability of S.M.A.R.T.?

  I've been using ActiveSmart to monitor my hard-drives health for a few weeks now, and its telling me my brand new 1.5 TB hard-drive is half-dead already. About on-par with one of my hard-drives which I know is at least half dead because I've been having some read errors and heard ticking noises. Now I haven't actually noticed any problems with my 1.5 TB drive; should I be concerned that it's going to crap out on me too? Or could ActiveSmart be giving a mis-diagnosis because I use it a lot or something (I've used up 795 GB in the 2 and a half weeks I've had it). The events that ActiveSmart has been catching is "Hardware ECC recovered". Maybe these new fangled super big hard-drives somehow rely on ECCs to squeeze out the extra space, but this isn't actually a cause for concern?

• Screen tearing with GeForce 550 Ti

  Recently I switched to the new monitor and graphic card - DELL U2312HM and GeForce GTX 550 Ti. I have problems with screen tearing (like in this picture from Wikipedia). Usually it is somewhere in upper part of the screen. Mainly happens in videos (in flash videos tearing heavier). In games all fine, except in-game videos (sometimes even videos built on game engine), but gameplay itself is clear, even in very fast actions. Connection with DVI. Problems both in Linux (Debian GNU/Linux, openSUSE 12.1, Linux Mint 13) and Windows (Windows XP, Windows 7), with various driver versions. 1920x1080, 60Mhz. How can I resolve this?
