    Background: I have not programmed in a while besides doing VBA and a little VB.NET. So please forgive my language use. I'm green and have a head cold. I am reading all I can now, but I have no programming circles to draw from. The information I am providing is to help guide you to what I am looking for. I am not confident I can ask the question properly. Story: I have four different projects that I am starting. Obviously I won't be working on all at the same time however they each will have similar needs and be inter related. They are as follows: Desktop Environment/System User Interface - basically a product that runs on major computers via mono or .net that unifies the look and functions. In the context of the up coming question it would be able to directly access data of various types. It would work in tandum with my office suite, system manager, and network application framework. Office Suite - technically it would not be a suite since I will be doing it from one interfacel except for the Communications Application. As far as the question, it will need to be able to link to various data sources for storing files and using, manipulating, and presenting information. System Manager - an intellegent system to manage and administer the entire network and all equipment. As far as the question, needs to be able to access data for archiving and and for accessing it's own settings stored in various formats, sql or xml. Network Application Framework - A complete system that can be used for ERP, CRM, CMS, Errata, File Management, and so on. As to the question to be able to access it's own or interlink with existing applications. Requirement: C#, Simplifies and reduces coding, use the same code to access diffent databases(ie MySQL, MS SQL, ACCESS, XML, ...), Mono would be nice but not a must, Question: What librarys, frameworks, or other options would be able to help with this? Is there a good resource to guide me? I don't want arguing over what is best, just information to help me further understand and make an educated decision.

  • DHCP settings out of range Internet shuts off after a few minutes

    I recently upgraded from windows eight to windows 8.1 I do not know if this has anything to do with anything I have a 64 bit OS. My Internet goes off by itself every 5 minutes even though my wireless icon at the lower right of the screen still shows connected I had an error message in the last event in it said that might DHCP settings were out of range. I get my internet at my house through a wireless portable hotspot through my smart phone. But i haven't ever had any problems before and i only have this problem on this network. If i turn airplane mode on and reset my network card, the internet will come back to life but soon die. i don't experience this problem while on a different network or if i'm on WiFi. My problem is that root CA signed client certificate works fine while subordinate CA signed one results in "400 Bad Request. The SSL certificate error".   • Wired connection periodically disconnects requires ipconfig /release and /renew to reconnect

    I just got back into University and after a day of using the internet I suddenly was unable to visit other webpages even though I was still able to chat. I restarted the computer and the internet could no longer visit webpages at all. I got a DNS error from the browser (chrome) and the troubleshooter. The connection comes up as "Network 3" even though It was "Network 2" when it worked. I compared ipconfig /all logs and they seemed identical when it was and was not working. I've found two ways to get internet connection (they no longer work): run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew several times set a random address and have the troubleshooter fix the new found dhcp problem (before it says dns cannot fix). I checked and it said DHCP was enabled. But either step one or two usually needs to be repeated several times before the network will change back to "network 2" from the defunct "network 3" and after an hour or so I have problems again. I've tried: Uninstalling windows defender and turning off firewall (windows firewall). Updating Qualcomm Ethernet driver - it is up to date. System Restore (problem resurfaces quickly...it's possible this has something to do with windows update?) Flushing dns and setting dns myself (google one and others). Booting in safe mode with networking...didn't fix anything Reinstalling Ethernet Driver Using other ethernet cable, other wall port. I'm out of ideas. Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. By the way, Operating System: Windows 7 - 64 Bit. Have downloaded latest windows updates. Update: And my two fixes don't work any more :( . The IP address I had before was a local one while the university address should start with 155... I didn't do anything to the settings...it's bizarre that it all of a sudden works. Thanks!

  • Building a Mafia&hellip;TechFest Style

    It’s been a few months since I last blogged (not that I blog much to begin with), but things have been busy.  We all have a lot going on in our lives, but I’ve had one item that has taken up a surprising amount of time – Pittsburgh TechFest 2012.  After the event, I went through some minutes of the first meetings for TechFest, and I started to think about how it all came together.  I think what inspired me the most about TechFest was how people from various technical communities were able to come together and build and promote a common event.  As a result, I wanted to blog about this to show that people from different communities can work together to build something that benefits all communities.  (Hopefully I've got all my facts straight.)  TechFest started as an idea Eric Kepes and myself had when we were planning our next Pittsburgh Code Camp, probably in the summer of 2011.  Our Spring 2011 Code Camp was a little different because we had a great infusion of some folks from the Pittsburgh Agile group (especially with a few speakers from LeanDog).  The line-up was great, but we felt our audience wasn’t as broad as it should have been.  We thought it would be great to somehow attract other user groups around town and have a big, polyglot conference. We started contacting leaders from Pittsburgh’s various user groups.  Eric and I split up the ones that we knew about, and we just started making contacts.  Most of the people we started contacting never heard of us, nor we them.  But we all had one thing in common – we ran user groups who’s primary goal is educating our members to make them better at what they do. Amazingly, and I say this because I wasn’t sure what to expect, we started getting some interest from the various leaders.  One leader, Greg Akins, is, in my opinion, Pittsburgh’s poster boy for the polyglot programmer.  He’s helped us in the past with .NET Code Camps, is a Java developer (and leader in Pittsburgh’s Java User Group), works with Ruby and I’m sure a handful of other languages.  He helped make some e-introductions to other user group leaders, and the whole thing just started to snowball. Once we realized we had enough interest with the user group leaders, we decided to not have a Fall Code Camp and instead focus on this new entity. Flash-forward to October of 2011.  I set up a meeting, with the help of Jeremy Jarrell (Pittsburgh Agile leader) to hold a meeting with the leaders of many of Pittsburgh technical user groups.  We had representatives from 12 technical user groups (Python, JavaScript, Clojure, Ruby, PittAgile, jQuery, PHP, Perl, SQL, .NET, Java and PowerShell) – 14 people.  We likened it to a scene from a Godfather movie where the heads of all the families come together to make some deal.  As a result, the name “TechFest Mafia” was born and kind of stuck. Over the next 7 months or so, we had our starts and stops.  There were moments where I thought this event would not happen either because we wouldn’t have the right mix of topics (was I off there!), or enough people register (OK, I was wrong there, too!) or find an appropriate venue (hmm…wrong there, too) or find enough sponsors to help support the event (wow…not doing so well).  Overall, everything fell into place with a lot of hard work from Eric, Jen, Greg, Jeremy, Sean, Nicholas, Gina and probably a few others that I’m forgetting.  We also had a bit of luck, too.  But in the end, the passion that we had to put together an event that was really about making ourselves better at what we do really paid off. I’ve never been more excited about a project coming together than I have been with Pittsburgh TechFest 2012.  From the moment the first person arrived at the event to the final minutes of my closing remarks (where I almost lost my voice – I ended up being diagnosed with bronchitis the next day!), it was an awesome event.  I’m glad to have been part of bringing something like this to Pittsburgh…and I’m looking forward to Pittsburgh TechFest 2013.  See you there!

  • Is there a low carbon future for the retail industry?

    Recently Oracle published a report in conjunction with The Future Laboratory and a global panel of experts to highlight the issue of energy use in modern industry and the serious need to reduce carbon emissions radically by 2050.  Emissions must be cut by 80-95% below the levels in 1990 – but what can the retail industry do to keep up with this? There are three key aspects to the retail industry where carbon emissions can be cut:  manufacturing, transport and IT.  Manufacturing Naturally, manufacturing is going to be a big area where businesses across all industries will be forced to make considerable savings in carbon emissions as well as other forms of pollution.  Many retailers of all sizes will use third party factories and will have little control over specific environmental impacts from the factory, but retailers can reduce environmental impact at the factories by managing orders more efficiently – better planning for stock requirements means economies of scale both in terms of finance and the environment. The John Lewis Partnership has made detailed commitments to reducing manufacturing and packaging waste on both its own-brand products and products it sources from third party suppliers. It aims to divert 95 percent of its operational waste from landfill by 2013, which is a huge logistics challenge.  The John Lewis Partnership’s website provides a large amount of information on its responsibilities towards the environment. Transport Similarly to manufacturing, tightening up on logistical planning for stock distribution will make savings on carbon emissions from haulage.  More accurate supply and demand analysis will mean less stock re-allocation after initial distribution, and better warehouse management will mean more efficient stock distribution.  UK grocery retailer Morrisons has introduced double-decked trailers to its haulage fleet and adjusted distribution logistics accordingly to reduce the number of kilometers travelled by the fleet.  Morrisons measures route planning efficiency in terms of cases moved per kilometre and has, over the last two years, increased the number of cases per kilometre by 12.7%.  See Morrisons Corporate Responsibility report for more information. IT IT infrastructure is often initially overlooked by businesses when considering environmental efficiency.  Datacentres and web servers often need to run 24/7 to handle both consumer orders and internal logistics, and this both requires a lot of energy and puts out a lot of heat.  Many businesses are lowering environmental impact by reducing IT system fragmentation in their offices, while an increasing number of businesses are outsourcing their datacenters to cloud-based services.  Using centralised datacenters reduces the power usage at smaller offices, while using cloud based services means the datacenters can be based in a more environmentally friendly location.  For example, Facebook is opening a massive datacentre in Sweden – close to the Arctic Circle – to reduce the need for artificial cooling methods.  In addition, moving to a cloud-based solution makes IT services more easily scaleable, reducing redundant IT systems that would still use energy.  In store, the UK’s Carbon Trust reports that on average, lighting accounts for 25% of a retailer’s electricity costs, and for grocery retailers, up to 50% of their electricity bill comes from refrigeration units.  On a smaller scale, retailers can invest in greener technologies in store and in their offices.  The report concludes that widely shared objectives of energy security, reduced emissions and continued economic growth are dependent on the development of a smart grid capable of delivering energy efficiency and demand response, as well as integrating renewable and variable sources of energy.     I've installed Magento on IIS in folder: E:\mydomain\wwwroot (I already have it all running correctly). I have no deeper folder magento, I placed all files directly in the wwwroot folder, so: wwwroot\app wwwroot\downloader wwwroot\errors wwwroot\includes etc... UPDATE: since I'm on IIS my .htaccess is ignored completely and my web.config rules are used instead.
