  • Mac OSX: Scroll half a page

    I am no longer using the trackpad on my macbook and using a separate wired apple keyboard instead. I miss the scrolling functionality on my trackpad, I'm having to make do with the keyboard (the mouse is too far away for efficient scrolling). Is there a way to map a key combination (such as cmd+pagedown) such that I scroll up/down half a page instead of a full page? Even better, is there a way to map key combinations to arbitrary scrolling distances? Thanks for your time

  • Set up ad hoc wireless connection between Windows Vista and Mac OS X

    I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP?   • Painfully slow login to AD bound Mac OS X Leopard machine when off home network

    Dear all Just looking for a little help with this problem that seems to trip a lot of people up and is causing me no end of grief. I have a number of fully patched OS X Leopard machines that are bound to my AD (Server 2003). When on the home network, logging in seems swift and works as expected. When users take the machines off site, login can take 5 minutes or more. The user adds correct credentials but the desktop does not appear for a very long time. Outside the office, I have tried logging in using a local Admin account, switching off Airport and then logging in using an AD account. In this situation login is immediate again. It all seems as if Leopard is finding a suitable wireless network, spending far too long looking for the Domain before eventually giving up and using the cached credentials instead. I have read that disabling Bonjour on the machine will stop this problem (i have not yet tested) http://www.macwindows.com/leopardAD.html#111607z ...but I am reluctant to use this "Solution" as I would like to be able to use Bonjour on the local network as well as having AD-bound machines. However, is disabling Bonjour really the only answer? Is there not some time-out setting somewhere that could be amended to stop Leopard spending forever looking for home?   • Mac Terminal.app: Force '^C' to be printed when editing current prompt, then aborting it

    This is the opposite of Prevent “^C” from being printed when aborting editing current prompt. I'm using Bash. When I'm editing the commandline in Bash, and I hit Control-C to abort the commandline, the '^C' character does not display. I would like to see this character. I tried commands like stty -ctlecho and stty ctlecho (which I borrowed from the other question), but this didn't work for me. This behavior seems to be true with my environment on Ubuntu, CentOS and MacOSX. This only happens within Apple's Terminal.App. If I SSH to a remote Linux or FreeBSD box, then ^C is printed. So, this is clearly just a local setting.   • zip being too nice (Mac OS X)

    I use zip to do a regular backup of a local directory onto a remote machine. They don't believe in things like rsync here, so it's the best I can do (?). It never seems to get above 5%. I tried making it nice -20 but that didn't make any difference. Is it just the network or disc speeds bottlenecking the process or am I doing something wrong?

  • Finding source of leaking active memory on Mac OS Lion

    My activity monitor shows 6GB of active RAM usage: Yet my Real Memory column shows nothing like that amount: (There's another screenful below that, all smaller.) Backing that up, the output from this command (which sums up memory usage of every running process): ps -axm -o "rss,comm" | awk 'BEGIN { s=0;}; {s=s+$1;}; END { printf("%.2f GB\n", (s/1024.0/1024));}' Gives 4.09GB, so it looks to me like 2GB has leaked. I see much wider ranges sometimes, perhaps 2 or 3GB from the ps command and as much as 7 or 8GB of Active usage reported by Activity Monitor. I've tried quitting everything and logging my user out and back in again, but the Active usage is still far higher than the RAM reported by ps and by each process to Activity Monitor. This 2GB of active RAM is basically unrecoverable unless I reboot. Is there any way to a) detect what's leaking and b) get it back? Thanks

    I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro.     I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.

It gives instructions to enter the following command to enable opening of Sublime in the terminal. ln -s "/Applications/Sublime Text 2.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl" /bin/subl After creating that link, it says I should be able to do subl . to open all the files in a folder in Sublime. However, when I do it, it says -bash: subl: command not found My system says the file exists ln: /bin/subl: File exists Any idea what I can do?

  • Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

    I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

  • Almost every Inkscape extension yields an error in Mac OS X

    I've run the latest few versions of Inkscape (currently landed on "0.47+devel"), and have been having trouble with the Extensions menu. So far, in every version of Inkscape I've tried, nearly every extension yields the following error: The fantastic lxml wrapper for libxml2 is required by inkex.py and therefore this extension. Please download and install the latest version from http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/lxml/, or install it through your package manager by a command like: sudo apt-get install python-lxml I've tried the instructions listed there, of course, with no effect. I've also found many references to this issue on fora, in bug trackers, etc., and as such also tried: sudo easy_install lxml cd /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib mv libxml2.2.dylib libxml2.2.dylib.old ln -s /usr/lib/libxml2.dylib and a few similar solutions. Nothing has produced any change in Inkscape's behavior. Does anyone know A) what's really going on here? Because from what I gather the error is not describing the actual problem. And of course B) a simple solution? I need those features! :)

I suppose the files related to the software update are compressed packages that have to be saved, opened and decompressed.   • Mac internet problems

    Our office is set up with mostly macs (7 of them) but we do have a windows laptop and a windows desktop on the network as well. The network is configured with a modem going into a switch/router throughout the office to the computers, along with a wireless router. Everything runs fine most of the time, but periodically while using the web, certain sites will stop loading and timeout repeatedly. This usually lasts 20 minutes or so and can be incredibly annoying. Resetting the modem/router and/or rebooting the computer never helps. The weirdest part is that in almost every case, the websites are fine on our Windows machines. I frequently use github, google, Stack Overflow, and jQuery reference and I can count on the sites being unavailable to me at least once a day. While I can't get them to load, I can spin my chair around to the windows server behind me and load the sites just fine. Any idea what the hell could be going on here?

It is also available via TweakUI on Windows. Some individual applications on OS X, like iTerm support it. What is it? Simply put, the window where the mouse pointer is has focus, rather than having to click a window for it to gain focus. Does the native GUI for OS X support this, with some hidden setting? Or, is there a good third party application that will do this?

    I've added my gmail account to Mail.app It worked find in previous days, and downloaded thousands of previous mails. But now, it can't connect to gmail server for days. What's the matter here?
