• Apache mod-rewrite for shorter urls

  Is it possible do do something like this with mod-rewrite? Current url: www.example.com/Departments/dynamicPage.php?DeptID=10&DeptName=HR to set up a rewrite so: www.example.com/hr could redirect to the above (with the arguments)? I know I could create an "hr" folder on the root level and put in an html page with a meta refresh, but I hate the extra clutter. I don't think a .htaccess 301 is possible, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for an elegant solution that can be added to for future instances.

• Restart Delphi Application Programmatically

  It should not be possible to run multiple instances of my application. Therefore the project source contains: CreateMutex (nil, False, PChar (ID)); if (GetLastError = ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS) then Halt; Now I want to restart my application programmatically. The usual way would be: AppName := PChar(Application.ExeName) ; ShellExecute(Handle,'open', AppName, nil, nil, SW_SHOWNORMAL) ; Application.Terminate; But this won't work in my case because of the mutex. Even if I release the mutex before starting the second instace it won't work because shutdown takes some time and two instance cannot run in parallel (because of common resources and other effects). Is there a way to restart an application with such characteristics? (If possible without an additional executable) Thanks in advance.

  I'm a newbie with SQL... Now I want to do display some instances of AddrDistances from DevExpress CxGrid with SQL. The numbers shows here is just the boldid. Every object in the database have an unique boldid. The addresses above is stored in table Address and it have a City field with the column and a boldid as a key. What should I write in SQL to get this right ? Is there something in the CxGrid that could help here ? Regards

• Synchronization between hibernate running locally and on a server

  Is there an easy way using a library to facilitate the synchronization of two hibernate instances. One running locally on a client and one running on a central server exposed via a web service. So Client tracks changes it makes, pushes them to the Server. The server ensures that the clients is not updating out of sync objects and stores the clients changes. The Client can also sync with the Server so that it can see the changes made by other clients. The idea is that the client can be run offline, without access to the server and only come online to synchronize when needed.

• Creating New Objects in JavaScript

  I'm a relatively newbie to object oriented programming in JavaScript, and I'm unsure of the "best" way to define and use objects in JavaScript. I've seen the "canonical" way to define objects and instantiate a new instance, as shown below. function myObjectType(property1, propterty2) { this.property1 = property1, this.property2 = property2 } // now create a new instance var myNewvariable = new myObjectType('value for property1', 'value for property2'); But I've seen other ways to create new instances of objects in this manner: var anotherVariable = new someObjectType({ property1: "Some value for this named property", property2: "This is the value for property 2" }); I like how that second way appears - the code is self documenting. But my questions are: Which way is "better"? Can I use that second way to instantiate a variable of an object type that has been defined using the "classical"way of defining the object type with that implicit constructor? If I want to create an array of these objects, are there any other considerations? Thanks in advance.

• AS3 Memory management when instantiating extended classes

  I'm developing an AS3 application which has some memory leaks I can't find, so I'd like to ask some newbie questions about memory management. Imagine I have a class named BaseClass, and some classes that extend this one, such as ClassA, ClassB, etc. I declare a variable: myBaseClass:BaseClass = new ClassA(); After a while, I use it to instantiate a new object: myBaseClass = new ClassB(); some time after myBaseClass = new ClassC(); and the same thing keeps happening every x millis, triggered by a timer. Is there any memory problem here? Are the unused instances correctly deleted by the garbage collector? Thanks!

• Dynamic access of classes of a given namespace

  Hi! I'm writing an interface that will be implemented by a lot of classes, and I'm writing a class that will hold a collection of instances of these implementations. Every class will have a default constructor. So, is there a simple way (e.g. using some kind of reflection) to put an instance of each of these implementing classes to the collection? Besides doing it manually, which is simple, yes, but a lot of work and error prone (what if I missed an implementation while writing the method? What if a new implementation came and I forgot to update the given method?). So, what I would like is to be able to iterate through all classes of a given namespace or maybe through the list of all available classes. My method then would simply check, through reflection, if the given class implements the given interface, and if it does, puts it into the collection. Thank you.

• Can we view objects in the JVM memory?

  Hey, At work we found that on some instances (particulary the slow ones) we have a different behaviour, acquired at the reboot. We guess a cache is not initialized correctly, or maybe a concurrency problem... Anyway it's not reproductible in any other env than production. We actually don't have loggers to activate... it's an old component... Thus i'd like to know if there are tools that can help us to see the different objets present in the JVM memory in order to check the content of the cache... Thank you!

• How can I search for numbers in a varchar column

  I've got a simple nvarchar(25) column in an SQL database table. Most of the time, this field should contain alphanumeric text. However, due to operator error, there are many instances where it contains only a number. Can I do a simple search in SQL to identify these cases? That is, determine which rows in the table contain only digits in this column. As an extension, could I also search for those column values which contain only digits and a space and/or slash. In other languages (eg. Perl, Java) a regular expression would resolve this quickly and easily. But I haven't been able to find the equivalent in SQL.

• A PHP object server for business logic

  I wonder if such a thing is possible or even exist : In the MVC pattern, I would like to have the Model part to be persistant in memory, instead of reloading my instances at each execution. So I want only the Controller and View part to be executed. Is there any solution of server that would provide PHP objects (just like a Mysql server provides data records), and that keeps these objects in memory ? A problem would be also : how to have a constructed query to get objects ? Maybe PHP Linq ?

• Is it impossible to secure .net code (intellectual property) ?

  I used to work in JavaScript a lot and one thing that really bothered my employers was that the source code was too easy to steal. Even with obfuscation, nothing really helped, because we all knew that any competent developer would be able to read that code if they wanted to. JS Scripts are one thing, but what about SOA projects that have millions invested in IP (Intellectual Property). I love .net, and especially C#, but I recently again had to answer the question "If we give this compiled program over to our clients, can their developers reverse engineer it?" I had gone out of my way to obfuscate the code, but I knew it wouldn't take that much for another determined C# developer to get at the code. So I earnestly pose the question, is it impossible to secure .net code? The considerations I have as as follows: Even regular native executables can be reversed, but not every developer has the skill to be able to do this. Its a lot harder to disassemble a native executable than a .net assembly. Obfuscation will only get you so far, but it does help a little. Why have I never seen any public acknowledgement by Microsoft that anything written in .net is subject to relatively easy IP theft? Why have I never seen a scrap of counter measure training on any Microsoft site? Why does VS come with a community obfuscater as an optional component? Ok maybe I have just had my head in the sand here, but its not exactly high on most developers priority list. Are there any plans to address my concerns in any future version of .net? I'm not knocking .net, but I would like some realistic answers, thank you, question marked as subjective and community!

Truck.default_make # gets the default via the class's method. # But: I wish to avoid mentioning Truck. Seems I'm repeating myself. end end the line Truck.default_make retrieves the default. But is there a way of saying this without mentioning Truck? It seems like there should be.

• Choking experienced while using the TCP/IP Adapter for BizTalk Server 2006

  I am using the TCP/IP Adapter for BizTalk Server 2006 which was obtained from codeplex: http://www.codeplex.com/BTSTCPIP Once the application was deployed in production, we started to experience choking in the performance of the application. The more the requests, the more the performance degradation. Sometimes, it happens that the receive ports become non-responsive and we have to forcefully restart the host instances to temporarily let the services respond again but we experience the same problems again and again. I would like to ask if any of you have used the same adapter and have you ever experienced the similar issues? If yes, how can we overcome theses issues. Thanks.

• Webforms vs. MVC. Once you start using MVC.. Do you ever go back to webforms?

  I checked out MVC months ago and didn't really get it.. but recently as I have become a better programmer I think it is making sense.. Here is my theory.. tell me if I got it Right In the 90s for Microsoft Devs we had Classic ASP. This mixed VBscript and HTML on the same page. So you needed to create all the HTML yourself and mix HTML and VBScript. This was not considered Ideal. Then .NET came along and everyone liked it because it was similiar to event driven VB 6 style programming. It created this abstraction of binding data to ASP Servier controls. It made getting Enumerated data easy to get on the screen with one line. Then recently Jquery and SOA concepts are mixed together.. Now people think.. Why create this extra layer of abstraction when I can just directly use .NET as a data provider and use jquery AJAX calls to get the data and create the HTML with it directly .. no need for the Webforms abstraction layer.. Sowe are back to creating HTML directly like we did in 1999. So MVC is all about saying Stop pretending like WEb programming is a VB6 app! Generate HTML directly! Am I missing anything? So I wonder.. for you people out there using MVC... is it the sort of things that once you get used to it you never want to go back to webforms??

• How does Task Parallel Library scale on a terminal server or in a web application?

  I understand that the TPL uses work-stealing queues for its tasks when I execute things like Parallel.For and similar constructs. If I understand this correctly, the construct will spin up a number of tasks, where each will start processing items. If one of the tasks complete their allotted items, it will start stealing items from the other tasks which hasn't yet completed theirs. This solves the problem where items 1-100 are cheap to process and items 101-200 are costly, and one of the two tasks would just sit idle until the other completed. (I know this is a simplified exaplanation.) However, how will this scale on a terminal server or in a web application (assuming we use TPL in code that would run in the web app)? Can we risk saturating the CPUs with tasks just because there are N instances of our application running side by side? Is there any information on this topic that I should read? I've yet to find anything in particular, but that doesn't mean there is none.

  Thanks in advance of all of your help! I am currently developing a program in C# 2010 that launches PLink (Putty) to create a SSH Tunnel. I am trying to make the program able to keep track of each tunnel that is open so a user may terminate those instances that are no longer needed. I am currently using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start to run PLink (currently Putty being used). I need to determine the PID of each plink program when it is launched so a user can terminate it at will. Question is how to do that and am I using the right .Net name space or is there something better? • ASP.NET MVC: run code after view has rendered (close db transaction)

  Hi, I am using ASP.NET MVC2 with NHibernate, but am facing an issue. All calls to the database via NHibernate should be inside a transaction, however code inside the view kicks off database calls in some instances. Thus there is a need to be able to commit the transaction after the view has rendered. For example displaying a list of users and their user roles you might show the user role using this code: <%: Model.UserRole.Name % This will cause a hit on the database as the UserRole is loaded using a NHibernate proxy. You can fetch the UserRole eagerly which circumvents the issue in this case, but there are cases where it is much faster to use lazy loading. Anyway, is there a way to run code after a view has rendered?

• System.Timers.Timer leaking due to "direct delegate roots"

  Apologies for the rather verbose and long-winded post, but this problem's been perplexing me for a few weeks now so I'm posting as much information as I can in order to get this resolved quickly. We have a WPF UserControl which is being loaded by a 3rd party app. The 3rd party app is a presentation application which loads and unloads controls on a schedule defined by an XML file which is downloaded from a server. Our control, when it is loaded into the application makes a web request to a web service and uses the data from the response to display some information. We're using an MVVM architecture for the control. The entry point of the control is a method that is implementing an interface exposed by the main app and this is where the control's configuration is set up. This is also where I set the DataContext of our control to our MainViewModel. The MainViewModel has two other view models as properties and the main UserControl has two child controls. Depending on the data received from the web service, the main UserControl decides which child control to display, e.g. if there is a HTTP error or the data received is not valid, then display child control A, otherwise display child control B. As you'd expect, these two child controls bind two separate view models each of which is a property of MainViewModel. Now child control B (which is displayed when the data is valid) has a RefreshService property/field. RefreshService is an object that is responsible for updating the model in a number of ways and contains 4 System.Timers.Timers; a _modelRefreshTimer a _viewRefreshTimer a _pageSwitchTimer a _retryFeedRetrievalOnErrorTimer (this is only enabled when something goes wrong with retrieving data). I should mention at this point that there are two types of data; the first changes every minute, the second changes every few hours. The controls' configuration decides which type we are using/displaying. If data is of the first type then we update the model quite frequently (every 30 seconds) using the _modelRefreshTimer's events. If the data is of the second type then we update the model after a longer interval. However, the view still needs to be refreshed every 30 seconds as stale data needs to be removed from the view (hence the _viewRefreshTimer). The control also paginates the data so we can see more than we can fit on the display area. This works by breaking the data up into Lists and switching the CurrentPage (which is a List) property of the view model to the right List. This is done by handling the _pageSwitchTimer's Elapsed event. Now the problem My problem is that the control, when removed from the visual tree doesn't dispose of it's timers. This was first noticed when we started getting an unusually high number of requests on the web server end very soon after deploying this control and found that requests were being made at least once a second! We found that the timers were living on and not stopping hours after the control had been removed from view and that the more timers there were the more requests piled up at the web server. My first solution was to implement IDisposable for the RefreshService and do some clean up when the control's UnLoaded event was fired. Within the RefreshServices Dispose method I've set Enabled to false for all the timers, then used the Stop() method on all of them. I've then called Dispose() too and set them to null. None of this worked. After some reading around I found that event handlers may hold references to Timers and prevent them from being disposed and collected. After some more reading and researching I found that the best way around this was to use the Weak Event Pattern. Using this blog and this blog I've managed to work around the shortcomings in the Weak Event pattern. However, none of this solves the problem. Timers are still not being disabled or stopped (let alone disposed) and web requests are continuing to build up. Mem Profiler tells me that "This type has N instances that are directly rooted by a delegate. This can indicate the delegate has not been properly removed" (where N is the number of instances). As far as I can tell though, all listeners of the Elapsed event for the timers are being removed during the cleanup so I can't understand why the timers continue to run. Thanks for reading. • Local sites not displaying in VirtualBox when using Django's local development server?

  Hello. I develop web applications using Django on Mac OSX 10.6. I use Django's built in local development server which I run on my computer's IP (such as: http://192.168.0.11:8001/). I test my applications in Firefox, Safari and Chrome and all display fine. I use Sun's VirtualBox with 3 different instances of Windows XP that have IE6, IE7 and IE8 on them. For whatever reason, these sometimes just don't display the Django sites. They come up with 'The page cannot be displayed'. Eight times out of ten, they display fine and function normally but for no reason at all they won't display. Sometimes restarting Django's local development server from the Terminal will fix the problem, sometimes it won't. Is there some sort of VirtualBox settings or Django settings that I need to set to ensure smooth operation of this? Am I overlooking something? Has anyone else had these problems?

Is it purely readability that is the difference, or are the using fundamentally different technologies on the back-end?

• Property in a Windows Forms form class only accessable after Load event

  I'm instantiating and calling Form B from Form A. FormB has some custom properties, to allow me to pass it things like sqlAdaptors and dataset instances. When i instantiate and show Form B from Form A as a dialog form with a Using statement, it all works fine, but i find the properties i pass are not available in Form B until after the form_load event has fired. I was under the impression the properties when passed to a instantiated class should be available from a constructor, but this is not the case. If it try to access the properties before the form load event i get a null reference exception. Is this correct behavior ?

• Handling Data Hierarchies in code

  Hi there So, say I have a string to parse with a given format that maps to a tree like data structure. The string is kinda similar to a folder path, and the structure is similar to a file structure, except its got some rules so for something@cat1@otherSomething you would get /something/cat1/otherSomething for something@cat2@otherSomething you would get /something/cat2/otherSomething other examples /OtherThing/cat1/otherSomething/Blah /OtherThing/cat4/otherSomething Where something, cat1, otherSomethign, etc are some sort of instances of ICategory There are certain rules that control what subcategories are valid and which subcategories are not acceptable, at the moment I m considering a heavy Object hierachy, but I know this is not a flexible solution, I d prefer the categories to be a bit more general but again, since there are rules about what can go next I m not sure how to do this. An example of a rule can be: OtherThing can only have subcategories cat1 and cat4 ( anything else is invalid) An option would be to use some sort of convention based aproach to instantiate a particular class given a subsection of the string(like cat4) but it seems a bit too complex, I m all ears Thanks

• Huge AS 3.0 Export Frame

  I am creating a very simple flash animation with no code or complex effects, just text and simple tweens (Flash CS5) But I have problems reducing the size of my swf. From the generated size report, it looks like it has to do with fonts and/or exported actionscript classes. The frame with AS 3.0 Classes is over 100K, and even though I am only using one fonts, the same characters are embedded/exported multiple times My questions are: Do embedding of mixed TLF/Classic text (or mixing other text properties, spacing/kerning etc) require the same characters to be embedded twice? Do text transformations on TLF text (rotation and different transformations not available in classic text) require embedding of ("internal") AS3 classes that will increase the size of the .swf? (even though none of these classes are explicitly used by me, there are no scripts in the fla project) I have tried removing all the text instances one by one, and at one point, the swf is reduced to only 5-6K, but I am not able to pinpoint exactly what causes the ballooning of the swf
