  • Apache strace to hunt down a memory leak

    We have a server with a memory issue: the server keeps allocating itself memory and doesn't release it. We're running Apache. I set MaxReqsPerClient to a really low value just so the threads don't hold a lot of memory, but has anyone seen calls like this? I have separated 4 GB of RAM for PHP, now according to the calculations 40 Child Processes via one socket, and I have total of 3 sockets in my Nginx and FPM configuration. My doubt is about the amount of memory consumption by those child processes. I tried to create high load in the server via httperf hog and siege but I could not calculate the accurate memory usage by all the PHP processes (other processes like MySQL and Nginx were also running). And all the sockets were in use, So, I seek guidance from anyone who have done this before or know how exactly the pm.max_children in PHP Works. Since I have 3 Pools/sockets with 40 child processes does that count to 3 x 40 x 40 Mb of Memory usage ? or it is just like 40 Max. Child processes sharing 3 sockets (and the total memory usage is just 40 x 40 Mb) ?

  • crunchbang: it takes up *how* much memory?!?!

    I've been trying many distros of Linux lately, trying to find something I like for my netbook. I started out with Ubuntu, and I can tell you I am a big fan. Ubuntu is now fast to install, much simpler to administer, and pretty light resource-wise. My original install was the standard 32 bit version of 9.04. I tried the netbook remix version of this release, but it was very, very slow. Even the full-blown version used only about 200mb. Much better than the almost 800 that the recommended Windows y version took. Once the newest release of Ubuntu was released, I decided to try the netbook remx of 10.04. It used even less RAM; only about 150mb. I thought I'd found my OS. I certainly settled in and prepared to use it forever. Then, someone I know suggested I try cunchbang. It is the most minimalistic UI I've ever seen, using Openbox rather than Gnome or KDE. Very slick, simple and clean. Since I am using the alpha of the most recent version (using Debian Squeeze), the apps provided for you are few...although more will be provided soon. You do have a word processor, etc., although not the OpenOffice you would normally get in Ubuntu. But the best part? 48MB. That's it. 48mb fully loaded, supporting what I can "hotel services". It's fast, boots quick, and believe it or not, I can even do Java-based development....on my netbook! Pretty slick.   More on it as I use it.

    I'd like to sell instructional videos over the web. Primarily, I'd like uses to subscribe to the site and be allowed access to videos over the internet. Secondarily, I might sell DVDs for those who have poor internet connections or would like a physical copy, or possibly I'd sell eBooks and the like in the future. Regarding the subscriptions: I'd like a system that automatically sends out e-mails when it is time to renew I'd like to be able to offer free trials Users without a free trial or subscription should not be able to access the content Incidentally, I plan to host videos on my current web host and move them to a CDN when volume (and capital) make this a good idea. While I have no intention to go crazy with the DRM, it seems expedient not to directly link to the files -- how can I link to them indirectly? It would be nice to support multiple payment processors -- specifically, I'd like to avoid a PayPal only approach. Are there any web applications (or plugins) you'd recommend for something like this? While I've set up and administered several web technologies, I've never done anything with e-commerce. I see there are possibilities like osCommerce, one friend recommends using WordPress with plugins, and it really appears that for any given CMS, you can graft on components like this, although I imagine that not all are created equal. As I'm not tied to a particular web application (and, while open source software that can run on a LAMP [p=perl, python, php] stack is preferable), I'd like to make a good choice at the beginning.

    It's great having lots of video on demand options, but actually choosing something to watch is turning into a mess - I have to jump from one website or application to another. I'd like to have a single queue where I can add and prioritize movies and TV I want to watch from any source: iTunes purchases, iTunes rentals, Netflix on demand, Amazon video on demand, Hulu, etc. I'd like the consolidated queue to be accessible from Front Row on my Mac Mini. Does such a thing exist?

  • DIY Homemade Hybrid Rocket Engine [Video]

    Remember the guy with the cool DIY astronaut ice cream build? He’s back with a mini hybrid rocket engine that runs off oxygen and acrylic. I built a small rocket engine for demonstration purposes. The engine is built from a 2″ diameter acrylic rod through which I drilled a 0.5″ hole. The oxygen at 80 psi or less is passed through the hole and then is forced through a convergent-divergent nozzle at the tail end. The nozzle’s throat is about 0.25″ and expands to 0.625″. I lit the engine by inserting a burning cotton swab (with wooden stick) while a small amount of oxygen was flowing. The acrylic catches fire very easily in a pure oxygen environment. The engine can be throttled and shut off completely, which is a major benefit to hybrid engine designs. Solid-fuel rockets cannot be throttled or shut off, which makes them difficult to control.   • Compiz antialiasing with xserver-xorg-video-radeon?

    Windows previews are ugly on my computer. Is there any solution to make them smooth? BTW windows previews in Metacity with compositing enabled (/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager) are looking much better than in Compiz. I am using the open source radeon driver, so I can't configure my videocard preferences via AMD's GUI, and I've tried all options like a texture filter, bicubic filter or mipmapping I found in ccsm with no result. How to make windows previews in Compiz be as smooth as they are in Metacity? And sorry, my English sucks just like these windows thumbnails in Compiz.

  • HDMI video output not working for external monitor

    I have installed from scratch ubuntu GNOME 14.04 with gnome-flashback on my old HP HDX 16 laptop (core 2 duo p8600 + nvidia GT9600M + 4GB of ram) and I have problems with the HDMI output (I use it to extend my desktop on a dell U2412M 1920x1200 monitor). In the following I summarize the configurations that I have tried: Using the open source nouveau drivers, only the laptop monitor works, no signal from the external monitor connected to the HDMI output. However, the output of the xrandr command show that the HDMI output is connected with the correct resolution 1920x1200 (I find this thing really weird). Nouveau drivers with VGA connection works without problems on the external monitor, but the image is blurry compared to the HDMI connection. Using the nvidia drivers (I have tried different versions: nvidia-331-updates and the xorg-edgers versions nvidia-334 and nvidia-337) the HDMI output works, but I have system instabilities, random crashes and display freezes. I can't even enter in terminal mode with ctrl-alt-f1, so I have to manually shut down the laptop with the power button. I really would like to use the HDMI output with the nouveau drivers to avoid the system instabilities that I experienced with the nvidia drivers, but I can't figure out how to make it works.     I have been playing games like MW2 recently and, as a programmer, I tend to ask myself how do they make the game so immersive. For example, how to they simulate bullet speed. When an NPC fires a bullet from his gun, does the bullet really travel from his gun to the given target or do they they completely ignore this part and just put a bullet hole on the target? If the bullet is really travelling from the gun to the target, at what speed is it actually travelling?

  • Q-Tec Webcam 100 (093a:2460) video quality is horrible at best

    I just bought a new usb webcam for my desktop setup of Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. I plugged it in, started up Cheese, and saw my smiling face. But it was green and lined, very poor quality overall. I am skeptical that this is due to a poor quality webcam. :P I tried it in Skype, Google+, and Gchat, but all of those showed only a black screen. They recognized the webcam as present, but showed no stream from it. Kamoso showed a black screen as well, and Camorama had even poorer quality than Cheese. Here are the details for the webcam from lsusb: Bus 001 Device 005: ID 093a:2460 Pixart Imaging, Inc. Q-TEC WEBCAM 100 Am I missing a driver, or are there settings somewhere I need to tweak?

  • An alternative to a video codec for storing motion changes [on hold]

    I have a 3 dimensional byte array. The 3-d array represents a jpeg image. Each channel/array represents part of the RGB spectrum. I am not interested in retaining black pixels. A black pixel is represented by this atypical arrangement: myarray[0,0,0] =0; myarray[0,0,1] =0; myarray[0,0,2] =0; So, I have flattened this 3d array out to a 1d array by doing this byte[] AFlatArray = new byte[width x height x 3] and then assigning values respective to the coordinate. But like I said I do not want black pixels. So this array has to only contain color pixels with the x,y coordinate. The result I want is to re-represent the image from the i dimension byte array that only contains non-black pixels. How do I do that? It looks like I have to store black pixels as well because of the xy coordinate system. I have tried writing to a binary file but the size of that file is greater than the jpeg file as the jpeg file is compressed. I am using c#.

  • Problem Installing Xubuntu 12.04 Audio-Video codecs

    I used Crouton to install Xubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with the XFCE environment on my HP Chromebook 11. I've gotten it all fully installed and everything; the only thing I'm doing now is the basic setup things, like adding codecs and other things like LibreOffice, VLC, Firefox, Ubuntu Software Center, etc. This information I got from 2 sources: http://www.efytimes.com/e1/fullnews.asp?edid=137269 http://www.binarytides.com/better-xubuntu-14-04/ . I'm currently on the same step at both URLs, which is #6 on Link 1 and #8 on Link 2. Per the articles, which both said the same thing, I typed in sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras libavcodec-extra and it didn't do anything. It just kept on saying the same thing: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package libavcodec-extra I've spend the last hour or so scouring the internet for a solution, for a hint even at what is going on. I don't want to do a clean reinstall, for two reasons: 1) it's takes like 1.5h just to get the croot fully installed, and 2) everything but this out of what I've done so far (up to #6 at Link 1 & up to #8 at Link 2) works except the audio. I've already installed flash, so YouTube works fine. It's just I can't hear any audio. Please help? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the great help I've been getting from AskUbuntu lately. You all are great.

    We're trying to enable the openX Market plugin on openX 2.8.9. Enabling the plugin results in an "Allowed memory exceeded" error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 201326592 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 76 bytes) in /home/openx/lib/pear/PEAR.php on line 868 no matter what we have our php memory_limit set to. It even exceeded 512MB. We're running RHEL 5.6 and PEAR 1.9.4 Has anybody else come across this problem?

Also, in iChat, if i right click on the other person's name, the option to "Invite to Video Chat" is greyed out. I am using Snow Leopard.
